Randy, Lee, Idol performance (37,908)
by Edward from USA

|

Randy and Lee, I couldn't have said it better. Why do we have to be so nervous everytime Mariah is going to perform even a single song? She's not touring, singing every night or anything like that, yet rarely she can pull a decent performance of a single song. I have to say I am so thankful we do studios, because if Mariah sounded like this in a CD, I would die. It was the perfect opportunity to close the Idol chapter with a "this Is a real diva" performance, but it wasn't, it was the same struggle. I get mad because I can't explain what happened to her voice, and no, I am not expecting her voice from the 90's, just something decent and consistent. Everybody paints Tommy like this monster and I agree he was a control freak, but one thing we all have to agree on is that while he was still in her life, her voice was flawless. I didn't even want to give my opinion on the performance, but I often wonder if I am the only one who sees, or maybe my ears are shot. I'm always hoping and hoping and hoping that maybe with enough rest, 5000 humidifiers, vocal coaches she'll blow me away, but I am still hoping.

The shocked and appalled? (37,907)
by RadChad from United States

I'm still surprised at how people act as if they don't know what's going on with Mariah's voice. I mean, it's been years since her live vocal glory days (that I am fortunate to remember). I'm sure there's a legitimate reason her voice isn't the same: there's the vocal nodules, insomnia, over using/singing for several years. Obviously her voice has gone through. Now I just see it as Mariah's trying to the best she can with what she got at the moment. At least she has already proven herself live on countless occasions. Trust me, I understand the frustration of wanting consistent stellar performance from your favorite vocalist (I actually pray that day will return ASAP), but you must still consider the source of the issue and also that it could be out of her control at this point (or perhaps something she diligently working to improve).

AI medley (37,906)
by Matthew from USA
| |
|
|
When I watch MC giving an interview, she is always so real and genuine and down to earth. When I watch MC perform, I usually get the impression that she is posing for her life. I'm not sure why it's so hard for her to bring the MC from interviews to the stage. I think this medley did some damage to her image, mostly because everyone else who has ever performed on this show has done so as part of the live finale celebrations. MC had the theater cleared out so she could bring in only people who were already fans, the lighting was just so, the production was just so, none of the contestants were involved. It was like some weird interlude and then they got back to the show. Even Aretha, who didn't sound that great, came off better because at least the contestants were part of it. I know she is the diva, but she probably should have done a song with one of the contestants. Even if she was somehow outsung, which I highly doubt, it would have been a nice gesture and people would be saying that she held back out of respect to the contestant since this is all about them. As for the voice, I believe it's still there. I believe she sung live. I do think she needs to let her hair down and go unplugged or acoustic to silence the critics again though. Maybe we can hope for small intimate unplugged/acoustic tour? Knowing Mimi, it will be just the opposite.

Mariah made such a big deal about getting vocal rest before performing on the Adventures of Mini tour. That didn't work out too well for her then. ono, I don't think we expect Mariah's voice to be as strong as it once was. But why doesn't she just let us hear her voice the way it is now? We don't expect it to be perfect, we just expect it to be live. Whether her performance is really good, or really bad, we don't care. We just don't want her to think that she has fooled us into thinking she is singing live when, as fans, we know for a fact that it was either lipped or over dubbed.

Dubbing (37,904)
by Lee from UK
| |
|
|
To me, Mariah's Idol performance was disappointing. The medley wasn't well constructed at all and with Mariah constantly bragging about how much production she does, this aspect of the performance underwhelmed me. In addition, the cutting and pasting together from different live performances to create one overly dubbed performance is embarrassing and cringe worthy to watch. Nobody who watched that on TV could possible believe that it was live. The whole thing to me was shocking. Here she is the voice, the diva, the inspiration who has been coaching these singers on performing live. Hold up, what's this? You're taking three takes to ensure a perfect performance? Then 20 minutes later Candice and Jennifer Hudson come on stage and completely slay it live. I don't know why I expect big things from Mariah anymore. I just keep on hoping one day her performances will make me feel like I used to when I was a teenager.

Lip sync, dub, pieced together, vocal rest and other excuses (37,902)
by Randy from USA

I'm going to be diplomatic as I can when I say this, because I am angry. We are not talking about Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears or Ashlee Simpson. We are talking about Mariah Carey. She is considered the best singer in the world by many. A little thing such as singing a live medley of her hits should not be problematic. There are lots of excuses on this board running around and my problem is that when I look at performances from 1990-1997 I can see the talent even if there are mistakes. I'm in MC's corner, hell, I was making those excuses for her on Facebook last night when my friends were blasting her. But seriously, why can't she perform 100% totally live when it counts? I want to be able to say her name amongst non-lambs without a snicker in the room. I'm still not able to do that. Furthermore, I think this is a case of "can't do" not "won't do" like a few of you think. My theory is the voice is shot and that is why in interviews during the last ten years, she has been focusing on getting others to know that she's such a great songwriter to steal attention away from the vocals. She blushes when people compliment her voice and it's in a way that lets me know she lacks confidence in them. I still love MC, but I'm tired of smoke and mirrors.

AI performance (37,901)

The performance wasn't lipped, it was just sloppily dubbed. One of the backup singers confirmed this on YouTube, she said Mariah did it live on Wednesday night when they recorded it. Sure, maybe a note or two may have been lipped, but we've all come to expect that. Voices can only last so long, and we should be thankful that Mariah still has hers after 20+ years of constant singing. It's unfortunate that people with zero musical talents will jump at any moment to say someone lip synched. Do your research, and gain some credibility, before you go around accusing a legend for entirely lipping a performance.

MC's Idol performance (37,900)
by Stacey from USA

I agree with Will and Deedre. The medley seemed choppy at points, but I liked how she incorporated a lot of songs from different album eras, not just a few. There were parts that were dubbed/lipped, but so what? She looked great. The medley reminded me what an amazing career she has had. Everytime she would start a new song, I was annoyed when she moved onto another song. I wanted her to keep singing that current song. Of course then she would move onto the next song and I was loving that one too, lol. However, did she have to perform after J-Lo? Seriously? MC should have been the last big act before announcing the winner. She is the judge of record this year, not J-Lo. *sigh* Now, she needs to announce she's leaving Idol. Her upcoming album, promotion, and maybe a tour will keep her too busy to commit to Idol another year. Because you know Idol producers will have no problem throwing the best female artist under the bus to save face. She needs to beat them to the punch first.

Well said, my friends. You think you guys are old, haha. I'm 35 hitting 36 in the fall. I completely agree with you both. I've never been a fan that wears rose-colored glasses. Some fans put MC on this unrealistic pedestal, thinking she is capable of no wrong. She is human and like I said before, prone to greatness and the occasional mistake. When she makes a mistake, IMO, I will say such while giving respect to those who disagree. And when she hits gold, I will praise her thru the roof. You nailed it, Stephen. Some folks don't understand the term constructive criticism. We are secure in our opinions and aren't thrown off when someone disagrees with us. I think that's why we get along. Anyways, I do like #Beautiful and hope it rises up the charts. #24 is a strong showing after one week.

I am not worried (37,898)
by Lee from USA

She is going to shut these haters and fair-weather fans up on GMA next Friday. People complained about her performance on the BET awards, but it didn't stop TEOM from going 6x platinum. So, why are people crying about a medley of her hits? Hello, you can't sing a duet by yourself. You all can't expect our girl to sing 4 or 5 songs in 4 or 5 minutes. She doesn't have to prove anything to us. The woman just put out a top 40 hit at the age 43 without much promotion.

I agree. Personally, I enjoyed it. Vocals were strong, she looked amazing. Medley was a bit choppy in spots, but overall I just enjoyed seeing her so much. I disagree that the entire thing was lipped. Nice to have a performance, it's been a long time. I've missed seeing her on stage.

I really think it was quite good. I really don't think it was lipped. Maybe parts of #Beautiful seemed a little suspect. Mainly when the whistle notes started. But like Will said, the final whistle note was definitely live. Her older songs definitely were not lipped. I enjoyed the performance. And she looked beautiful and classy too.

I think she lipped at least when she started on Hero. She had the typical "hand-covering-face" movements. It's dissapointing when a star like Mariah doesn't sing live, when the competitors does.

She didn't lip sync (well at least not the whole performance), if it looked a little out of sync it's because it was dubbed. Many of the lambs on twitter that were there said she performed her set three times. So my belief is that they used the audio from the best bits. I'm not mad at her though. Yes, nothing beats a stellar totally live performance, however I would rather have a great dubbed performance than an embarrassing bad performance (though it was a bad dub job). At least it helped #Beautiful jump back into the top 10 on iTunes. I hope and believe she will perform totally live on GMA, I think a bad performance on Idol would've been too much of a risk.

Oh c'mon it wasn't that bad. The vocals were on point, it was the editing that was not. It was dubbed, but not lipped. We can tell by now whether Mariah is lipping or not, and during that performance, she wasn't. The whistle at the end of #Beautiful was, excuse the pun, beautiful and clear and was not lipped from the track. Granted, they could have chosen different songs for a medley (I mean, whose idea was it for VOL to go into MIH?), but after that it was fine. MA was great, it was lovely hearing her sing VOL after so long, Hero was on point, MIH was on point again and WBT stole the show. Overall, I loved it. And that dress? Stunning.

Idol lip sync (37,890)
by Chase from USA

Yes, there's a good chance the performance was at least partially lipped, but I have a suspicion a lot of people would be complaining if it weren't. There have been some exceptions, but most of Mariah's live, televised performances of the past 5 or so years have been (in my opinion) pretty rough - to the point that I often don't watch them, because they are painful for me. If she had been outdone by Candice, who has power and control that many of Mariah's recent performances have lacked, it would have been a really bad look.

Such a waisted opportunity. It truly was so bad. I love #Beautiful. It genuinely deserves the #1 spot. Lip sync is so 2005. I don't get lip syncing, especially after arranging the songs in lower keys. PS: Mariah has a great radio hit. Honestly. And yes, it's a genuine hit.

Mariah on Idol (37,888)
by Liz Archer from Sweden

They can say what they want, but Idol has never had such good talents at the top when speaking of unique voices. And I think a big deal to that is due to Mariah. Yes, she has focused on giving positive influences, but there is nothing wrong with that. I wish to see her on another Idol, simply because I love to see her weekly on a program. Well, very selfish reasons. I hope to see you on Idol or other music programs in the future.

I mean, literally, did you ever imagine that Mariah would be in the audience and doing an (admittedly reluctant) "standing o" for one of the celebrity performers (let's not name any names) on the American Idol finale? To quote MC, I guess it was one of those awkward moments.

Examiner - the other foot (37,886)
by nikki from usa

Lack of facts basically scream "tabloid". Yes, Mariah had 1 song, not several, that sold for 49 cents. Facts missed: 1. The promo was to offset her extemely expensive maxi single (same song) of $13.99 complete with 13 remixes. 2. Bootylicious had the same 49 cent discount at the same time and was a #1 hit. False information: Heartbreaker wasn't a radio hit. Yes, it was. In fact, it was huge. What are the ethics of 'The Examiner' when it passes off gossip as reality? Billboard's week starts Tuesday, not Monday. Meaning? Mariah's Beautiful promo day didn't even count toward her #24 charting. One day of "good airplay" doesn't compare to an entire weeks worth. There weren't any downloads or streaming available which is why it didn't debut the following day (last week). Mariah's current charting was based off the drop off "no promo" Tuesday, where her single was available for download and streaming her video didn't happen until Thursday night. She charted on her own merits thereby keeping her "promo day" as just that, without any advantage to her current placement.

You know a few years ago when MC was promoting WBT on every show, I would be excited and tell my ex. His remark was, what is she lip-syncing to, the album track or the scratchy track meant to make you believe she's singing live. On AI last night, she used both. And once again my Facebook is lighting up from non-fans. And once again I'm stuck doing damage control. I am so disappointed. It's not the lambs that will get Mariah press off of her breasts and her antics; it will be her voice and the music. If she is ever going to hit Aretha Patti Barbara legend/icon status, she has got to put those live performances out there when it counts. This was a huge miss. I am mortified.

Mariah's medley performance (37,884)

I have to say I am so looking forward to see how see does this. The only reason I'd love to see this is because 1. we haven't heard some of these #1's in a very good while. 2. It's a different style of performance. I've been to quite a few concerts and sometimes I've always been like... "Gee it's the same choice of songs all the time." So this for me as a fan of 18 years I'm really looking forward to this little mix. You seen one concert, you've seen them all is how I see it. Though I love Mariah, I will still go to see her live when she is in my area.
