The TV feud (37,140) by RadChad from United States
Yes, Nicki raised a good point, however her delivery was awful. She could've made her point without attacking Mariah and Randy. They weren't even arguing over the point she was trying to make, but rather the accusations she made against them. Randy and Mariah have right to voice their opinions just as she does and I didn't see anything wrong with them telling that girl that her voice works well with country music. Of course she can try different genres, but you still have to know who you are as an artist. I think that's all they were trying to help her with. I felt that Nicki took that out of context and then blew it out of proportion. Fact that she would approach things that way in front of contestants was tacky and unprofessional IMO. It just came across as her having a chip on her shoulder.

More on Idol (37,139) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
I think Mariah has said constructive things during an audition. It's clear how much she cares about being a mentor. I'm looking forward to the performance portion, because IMO that's where critique comes into play really. Mariah isn't ever going to be a "harsh" critic, because she's highly sensitive to that herself, so she doesn't have it in her, but I don't think she'll have any problems getting her point across when the time comes. I thought she was really good in 2008 as a mentor. Everything she said was constructive and customed to each unique performer, not about her or her style as an artist. I'm very much looking forward to the performances.

I actually like Niki now/AI (37,137) by Nattalie from USA
Her personality so far is hilarious. She brings the show to life and she got jokes. Mariah got some good jokes too and I love how they go in on each other. I wish I loved Niki's music as much as her personality. Anyways, have any of you watched American Idol before? This is exactly how the show has always been. There is no judging at the beginning. Its the weed out time. You're either in or out, not getting help. Help is for those that deserve help. Right now we just enjoy the laughs and hear them diss the sorry people.

Auditions vs critique (37,136) by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada
I just wanted to chime in and say I can understand why some are finding the judging for the auditions to be dull. IMHO an audition really isn't the place for a critique. The singer has 20 maybe 30 seconds to show their ability, and it's about whether or not the judges feel they've got what it takes to have a shot at the competition as a whole. It is also about walking that fine line between saying something constrictive versus potentially crushing someone's dream. What is said in an audition setting can really influence how a person chooses to move forward. I think everyone on the panel is mindful of that, No one on the panel has said anything extremely and utterly profound yet in terms of a critique on the merit of performance, and to be fair I don't think the auditions are the place for it. Also, we only get to see a handful out of thousands based on the editing for AI. For what it's worth. I think the "judging" has been appropriate for the confines of auditions.

I love my girl but (37,135) by Nattalie from USA
I have to agree with Niki. I mean, I agree with both, because yes Mariah knows what she is talking about, but seriously it could have been handled better. Yes, the contestants needs to find where they are musically, but you know how many different songs you have to sing on Idol? All those different genres? So why does it matter? You can either sing or not sing. Funny thing is, when another person got on stage and did well, Randy said, see you can sing anything with a voice like that and singing well. But when it came to certain people, the judges were like, so who are you, you need to know, if not, I don't think you can continue. Lol.

Mariah/Idol (37,134) by RadChad from United States
I disagree. I think MC is doing a great job on idol. She's funny, warm, has given great feedback to the contestants, and carried herself very well during the whole feud situation (rightfully defensive yet still classy and mature). As a fan I'm completely satisfied with her presence on the show thus far. I'm not understanding what more people could want or expect from her as a judge. Mariah is more of a nurturing mentor and less of a harsh critic, so I believe she will be even more great during the live shows. I'm looking forward to it.

I agree 100% with what you said about Mariah's judging performance so far. I too am hoping she becomes more critical or, at the very least, more helpful. I assume that she is saving it for the more serious stages later on. The hope is that, with Mariah's reputation for being "The Voice", she will be able to give contestants hints and tips on how to sing better. Moreover, I would enjoy it if Mariah gave contestants examples of how to improve. In this way, not only will she be a better, more helpful judge, but she will also be showing everyone out there who has ever counted her out that she is in fact very qualified to be in the position she is in. At the moment, we just aren't getting that. I did enjoy the snippet she sang of Billie Holiday though.

Nicki vs Mariah (37,132) by Licia from USA
I'm shocked that the big blow up was over a difference of opinion. The whole situation could have been handled better.

American Idol (37,131) by CDC from CA
If I can be objective for one moment: Mariah's performance as a judge is so far disappointing. She hasn't said anything insightful or even remotely interesting, and as a whole, she appears dull. Most of her output has been fluff., short and vague compliments that I'm sure would boost the contestants' confidence, but wouldn't imagine help guide their musical direction. I had hoped to learn a few things from Mariah's multi-decade experience in music, but she seems more focused on personality than music. "I connected with you", "You're a star", "You glow". Really, only a few minor steps above the mentally absent Britney on X-Factor a few months ago. Maybe she'll improve in the coming weeks, maybe she's reserving any substantial critiques for the later, more important dates, but for now, since I'm generally not interested in Idol, I'm going to check out.

Desiree (37,130) by Stacey from USA
I know you weren't referring to me. I should have made that clearer in my post. My point was a bunch of people including myself have talked about Nicki vs. Mariah. It wasn't fair to single out Carla when so many others are talking about it too. It's the big story from Idol and until that changes (i.e. Nicki wises up and stops the digs) it will continue to be the main story. Know what I mean?

I wasn't talking bad about you, it was Carla.

Was that a reason to lose it ? (37,128) by Carol from Spain
Anyway, it proved that Nicki is weird and had no reason to snap. Why do I continue posting about Nicki? Because she is pathetic. If that's all that was for her to go up the walls, then she has a problem in accepting other people's opinions. Keith Urban is a country singer and wasn't a fan of the performance, Mariah and Randy gave the contestant positive criticism inside his genre. Why did she snap?

Desiree / Jenny (37,127) by Stacey from USA
Others are talking about Nicki vs. Mariah too, including myself. For me, it's so in my face, how can I not talk about it. Nicki is all over MC with every little dig each time MC speaks. It gets really really annoying after awhile. She is clearly jealous of something. If you are confident in yourself, you have no need to personally attack others. MC is getting positive press making Nicki more jealous. She's trying to hard to win folks over and be funny. Her whole demeanor is falling flat. Folks will talk about what they want. Doesn't bother me. I just ignore what I don't care to talk about. Jenny, you're welcome. Folks here know I don't sugar coat constructive criticism of MC. They also know I give praise where praise is rightly deserved and with AI, MC is doing a great job. I think you'll quite enjoy her judging style when AI hits SA.

Stacey/Carla (37,126) by Desiree from USA
Carla, why you keep bringing up the Mariah vs Nicki thing like no one cares? Stacey, I agree with you. I couldn't be happier too.

Stacey (37,124) by Jenny from South Africa
Thanks Stacey, I definitely feel reassured now. I've always believed MC is a genuinely kind, caring person so I just got a little worried that I'd been wrong for the last 20 years lol. I feel guilty for doubting her now lol. Sorry Mariah, I love you.

New single? (37,123) by Brad Catoe from United States
I can't lie, I'm super excited for the new single. Honestly though, I'm usually always impressed with MC's music. I'm sure the "new" single will be better than the first, not to bring up a sore subject. Haha Also, I think Mimi is doing fabulous on AI. I'm so happy that she is coming off as herself. I was afraid they would portray her as some diva B, which we all know she's not. Her personality and sense of humor are shining through.

Nicki: the jealous one (37,122) by Carol from Spain
The problem on AI is that Nicki Minaj is absolutely jealous of Mariah.
Everytime a contestant says Mariah influenced them in some way, if the camera focuses on Nicki`s face we can see her roll her eyes out.
Nicki has nothing to show for her career, absolutely nothing. Mariah's album Glitter, considered a flop, sold more then Nicki Minaj `s three albums. Need to say more? From now on, I'll be very upset if someone says Glitter was a flop. Altough I think Nicki is not that bad as a judge, she lacks as a person.

Hope Street / one more thing (37,121) by Stacey from USA
When I read the phrase tired of trying to please the teenager audience, I couldn't be more happier to read that. The eternally 12 thing was growing old. Now granted I'm 35 and never want to let age get the better of me. But, there are things I do now that I didn't do at 12 and vice versa. Know what I mean? I can't wait for a more mature sound. Doesn't mean she has to go soft or sugary, but something that meets halfway. She's grown up a lot in that she's married with a family now. That changes your perspective. Like TJ, I hope this really comes true. She said similar things before MOAIA, and although some here love that album, it was a big let down for me. Somehow with the release of the album coinciding with Idol, I think Mariah is going to bring it (ala TEOM). The return of the voice returns once again.

Deedre (37,120) by Stacey from USA
Deedre, I totally agree with you about MC/Minaj feud. I think there is some real bad blood there. Quite frankly, Minaj is jealous. She fights too hard to be the center of attention. Mariah doesn't need to fight for attention. Her accomplishments do that for her and I think Minaj is jealous of that. Why else do you constantly dig another artist. I saw that clip of Minaj joking about MC's range. MC's reactions are too natural for it to be fake. All I know, Minaj doesn't know who she's messing with. MC has such a great way of getting back at her critics. Minaj needs to talk to Eminem. MC makes a video, writes a song calling him obsessed, even dressing up like him. Too funny.

Hope Street / Jenny (37,119) by Stacey from USA
I like the title. I can't wait to hear the song. Jenny, I think you'll like MC's judging style. Most of the American press has been positive toward MC. TV Guide's praise I quoted and another article posted by Hollywood.com (on this website) titled "10 reasons why MC is the best qualified judge ever". I was a little unsure MC should do Idol. I honestly thought it was beneath her. However, I wanted to give the show a fair chance and reserve full judgement untill the show aired. I found myself excited to hear her critique. She has a way of critiquing the contestants minus the Simon-like bite. Know what I mean I can tell she genuinely cares about the contestants. It's not about her. It's not about showing up the other judges (*coughs* Minaj). It's about helping another artist achieve their dreams, something MC is very passionate about.

Hope Street? (37,118) by Carol from Spain
Honeslty, I don't believe Hope Street is a song. Not from Mimi. Maybe I'm wrong. And then I don't understand the comment of "Joni Mitchell on steroids". Are they criticizing or what? It's a rude comment or not? I just want new exciting music to own.

Hope Street (37,117) by Stella from Greece
I'm so excited. It sounds like everything I wish Mariah would do, mature and classic. I hope the new song has a touch of Memoirs too, I love that album.

New album (37,116) by TJ from Norway
"Apparently, Mariah is tired of trying to appeal to teenagers and has made an album that is heartfelt, personal and very artistic." I really, really hope this is true, but I am afraid that it's just something I have heard before. Does anyone remember what they said before her last studio album was released?

Idol and Hope Street (37,115) by Jenny from South Africa
Ok, judging from the comments posted by those of you who managed to watch Idol properly (unlike me, lol), I have to assume the articles I read bashing MC were just from biased haters. That's such a relief, I was stressing that I would be disappointed when it finally hits S.A. screens. Ok I am officially looking forward to watching it now. Thanks guys. This new single seems like it's gonna be amazing. I'm so excited for it. I just adore big ballads.
