New song? (103,232) by Bobby A from United States
Lol. I got all excited today at the library. I totally ignored those Pepsi ring tones when they came out. Shout out to Chante Moore for taking up for MC. She is the real deal. She can execute her whistle notes as well. She recently married former BET executive Stephen Hill who helped MC find new management after Crustella. What if Mimi married Stephen Hill? Chante got her man. Lol. By way Mariah Trends on Twitter posted a video today of MC holding baby Philip with Rocky. Who is baby Philip?

It's called "All to Myself". It's one of the Pepsi ringtones she made back when she got emancipated and changed her name to Mimi.

What is the name of the song at the beginning of this video? I have never heard this song before.

"When You Believe" 25th anniversary coming soon (103,229) by John from USA
Let's take time to remember this song, at a time when there is seemingly very little we can truly believe in and hold on to. I hope this song gets a rerelease with the Oprah live version added as a CD single.

Discounted singles (103,228) by Andrew from the UK
I must be missing something here. "Discounted singles"?

My first question would be: "Discounted from what?" People can sell whatever they want at any price in a free market society. As on a bell curve, items are sold at the lowest price that will shift more units that at a higher price that will shift less if it would make more profit to do so? I don't recall in Woolworths of Tower Record or any other music store in the UK at the time there being a standard fixed price for a single.

And, in any case, my second question would be: "Who, in their right mind, buys a hardcopy single because of the price? "Way back when, back in the day, all songs were on the radio and music television channels before they hit the music stores. I had rarely gone to one not knowing what the new single releases sounded like - or, if I had, I would generally (elongated) know what the single was going to sound like dependent on the artist. It's not as if people bought My All not knowing what a Mariah Carey ballad would sound like. The argument is absurd.

My third question would be: "If it were so easy to get to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 by discounting a hardcopy single in the music stores - that is, if the high charting led to further purchases at full price, even: why didn't everyone do it?" There is something so dubious about this "Mariah only got No.1 because of discounted singles" argument that it smacks of disingenuousness somewhere.

Unless I am gravely mistaken. But the trouble with entertaining Mariah critics in this talking point is that they're arguing something that can never be won and so they can chip away at her with it. But it can be argued on a test of objective reasonability. Yes, I imagine some persons did throw it into their baskets because it was cheap, as some people are so inclined - but so inclined in *those* numbers? I would tell anyone suggesting that as a reality to not waste my time.

Great topics this week (103,226) by Bobby A from United States
This has been a good week with great topics. From rumors of MC's impending return to A.I. to reminiscing about the Price sisters and Melonie Daniels to the impact of discounted singles to flirting with a favorite board member to my failed The Rarities 2 Twiiter campaign, the topics brought us all together. I may have to visit the U.K. this Christmas though.

Discounted singles (103,225) by Bill from the UK
Being the UK there weren't any tactics like this, other than the CD singles being released in "two parts" to sustain sales in the second week, and make rabid fans like me buy every version for different remixes or the alternative cover art (shout out to the UK exclusive Always Be My Baby artwork). I have been known to narrow my eyes in suspicion at the "one week only" #1s. I agree with what you say about My All and Thank God I Found You. I wouldn't say it applies to Heartbreaker and One Sweet Day though, because they had quite long stays at the top (especially OSD), plus Heartbreaker's great video would have helped as that whole thing was a hoot. This is why I roll my eyes when the (ducks) yaas queens lay down the "she's had two hundred thousand number ones" trump card. It's like, ask Joe Public to name 6 of them. Go on I'll wait. And yes, we all love Loverboy for all sorts of reasons (my affection for it is because it's such a mess), but there's no way that would have even cracked the top ten stateside were it not for it being sold for a penny or whatever it was. I always felt the UK's chart position of #12 was justified. It didn't warrant a top ten position, but deserved to knock at the door and be asked to the party, only to be sent away.

I've had too much wine.

Discounted singles (103,224) by Randy from USA
Good topic. I think the singles that might not have gone to number one without fans rushing to buy physical copies are more-so Thank God I Found You and My All. Loverboy definitely wouldn't have gone to #2. I Still Believe wouldn't have gone to #4 either. I believe Honey, One Sweet Day and Heartbreaker are true driven by the general public number ones. Non-fans know those songs and those videos stayed in heavy rotation on MTV. My All's week at #1 comes after week 4 of Too Close by Next's 5 weeks at #1. Then Too Close returns to number one which clearly shows My All went to number one as soon as a physical copy/discounted copy was offered to rabid fans like me who already had the Butterfly album but wanted remixes and alternate versions. At least the general public has heard of My All. TGIFY is a song nobody but us knows. It's one week interrupted Savage Garden's I Knew I Loved You after its 3rd week at #1. After TGIFY was number one for one week then Savage Garden returned to #1. Again rabid fans like me wanted the Keith Sweat Make It Last Forever Remix. I remember buying that maxi-single. One store was out and another store sold me their last one.

Absolutely. It gives such a sombre end to the record and feels unfinished without it. Such an epic closer that gives the record more breadth definitely. Jamie I love the new picture, very Magnum PI (that's a compliment).

Yeah I get that when you've had the album as a whole from the start, anything else wouldn't feel part of it. To me it wouldn't feel Music Box without it as that's how we heard it over here. I remember thinking at the time why's it a bonus track it's that good.

Discounted singles (103,215) by Lainsky from Philippines
Do you think Mariah's singles, which were made available for $49 upon their release or a week after, would reach No. 1 if they sold at their original price? It was just a thought I have been thinking about recently. Heartbreaker and TGIFY have become controversial because of their discounted price. Both skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. There's Honey and OSD too. However, OSD was really popular on the radio like Fantasy. These two singles are destined to be on top.

It is perfection indeed. Even though I discovered "Everything Fades Away" years later since it wasn't part of the US version of Music Box, I've placed it at the end of "All I've Ever Wanted", but it always sounds out of place to me. It's a good thing it is now on "The Rarities". "All I've Ever Wanted" vocals are insane.

Everything Fades Away is one of the best unreleased Mariah songs ever. All I've Ever Wanted followed by Everything Fades Away is just magical. Listening to them on repeat now in bed as I used to many years ago. She should have released All I've Ever Wanted. She ought to have received a Grammy for the vocal performance on it. It's perfection.

Nodules (103,211) by Andrew from the UK
Guess what a doctor would say if you presented with nodules on your vocal chords: a) don't drink alcohol b) don't smoke cigarettes or marijuana c) do vocal exercises d) all of the above? When writing about Mariah's nodules there is an air of deception if the context seems to to solely blame nodules on the chords and deflect from Mariah's own behaviour. For, put simply, she has not looked after her voice.

The Price Sisters and Melonie - underrated gems (103,210) by Jamie from UK
This is what I miss about 90's music, background vocalist would be heavily added to tracks and in short parts usually towards the end would almost be the lead with the artist singing over them. I love Michael Bolton and he used this style, Everything Fades Away is a good example of this. I find it adds depth and texture to songs and can bring out more emotion in certain songs.

How cool would it be for Mariah to do one track with the Price Sisters and Melonie, and team up with Walter for writing and production. She's always going on about the nostalgia darrrrling so give us some nostalgia.

Yes, I remember Melonie not being on the backgrounds for Honey because she felt the lyrics were too suggestive. She's a devout Christian and as I understood it, Mariah kept her off any tracks that might have sailed a bit close to the wind with the lyrical content.

Nodules (103,208) by Terna from Nigeria
At this point, surgery is her only option and I do hope it is successful if true. The [ease] of singing would be restored, her tone would be so much fuller with a cleaner sound, just so many qualities she kept losing over time would be noticeably back. Mariah still has a very youthful or [young] sounding voice just held back by the nodules.
