Am I the only one (101,427)
by Randy from USA

Who replaces originals on MCs albums with remixes or other versions? For example, on the debut, I switched out the album version for the video version of Someday. On Butterfly, I replaced Honey with the Bad Boy Remix, Breakdown with the Mo Thugs remix, The Roof with the Mobb Deep extended rap. On MOAIA I've replaced Obsessed with the Gucci Mane version, Up Out My Face with the Nikki Minaj remix and Angels Cry with the Neyo duet. What upsets me with Fantasy is I can't mix the dramatic intro with the whistle into the Bad Boy Mix which has the both hooks and ODB. I don't know how you guys put Everything Fades Away at the end of Music Box. That's blasphemous to me. It doesn't go there lol. I do love that song but Music Box should end on All I've Ever Wanted. How have y'all redone your MC albums.

Why do you keep referring to Marian? Is that supposed to be a joke or do you keep making the same type repeatedly?

Strain the Night (101,424)
by Edward from USA

"Stay the Night" was always an annoying track to. It's not really the music, but the fact Marian's voice sounds too strained and whiney to my taste. I always skip it. I prefer "To The Floor" and " Get Your Number".

I'd say this, he's broader than just hiphop for his production credits (for instance, he produced Alicia Key's "U Don't Know My Name", Janet Jackson, John Legend, etc) and it makes sense if you didn't follow the charts either - Kanye has 22 Grammy wins! A lot for being a producer.
But back to your original point - I love Stay the Night. One of my favorite tracks and the production is incredible.

Holy Trinity alternative (101,422)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada

What if the Holy Trinity of vocals were: Mariah, Brandy (known in America as the "vocal Bible") and Aaliyah (the ultimate of modern R&B imo)? I've been deep into my Aaliyah and Brandy vinyls recently, and I acknowledge Mariah could mess with Whitney and Celine (those belts are unmatched). However, what instead we focused on Mariah Brandy and Aaliyah and their honey butter delivery and tone? Voice wise.

There's a third camp, which is about the music.
I am on that camp, maybe I'm the only one on it and I'm ok with it. What that camp says is that she's not just a vocal, the camp that believes Caution is a fantastic album. She's an artist who creates and writes music. It's really what sets her apart from the big voices and the great lyricists because she is both. It's always been about the music for me, live or not. As long as she produces good music like I know she's capable of, she's will always be the queen in my book.

So, Matthew what is your opinion as to why MC was never a polished live performer? Do you think Tommy is cause of it because he was afraid MC would become too big too soon? Or was it MC herself whio was afraid that her vocal nodules would cause her to lose her voice after a long demanding tour? The latter is why most Lambs and vocal coaches suspect MC's voice was dramatically different after the Music Box tour. When I listened to MC's most recent WBT perdformance on a CD that I made, I found it be her worst WBT performance ever. I couldn't even compare it to her Mimi's Late Night Valentine's Mix. I would love to know what really happened to MC's voice after E=MC2 someday. It was evident to me that her voice had suffered major damage on Memoirs but she rebounded on MCIIY.

We all want Marian to deliver quality music and decent performances, that's all. Quality as in music with great lyrical content. Decent as in singing in her current range and stop pretending to hide the elephants in the rooms where her performances take place. She might not have control of her voice like she used to, but she could definitely kill it with her pen game. I know it's going to be difficult for her to retire those difficult songs to sing, but unless she arranges them differently, it will be more and more obvious as her voice keeps declining. I don't know what it is that's affecting her, but it is sad to watch. I saw how Barbra Streisand, at 53, gave Celine a run for her money vocally on "Tell Him". I always thought Marian would have similar voice quality too.

So it seems there are two camps.
The first camp cares more about the live performances. They want those to be good. In order for the live performances to be good, they want her to take it easy in the studio and just sing plainly and simply without ornamentation, so that she will have no trouble replicating it live.
The second camp cares more about the album than live performances. In order for the album to be good, they want her to do as many takes as is necessary in the studio. They don't care if one day on Jan 17, 2024 at 6:38 PM she sounded terrible on a live performance because that's one performance. The album will be good, and the album is forever.
I'm torn. Mariah has never been the most exciting live performer. She is known, however, for being an amazing creative in the studio. I guess if this were Beyonce, I'd be in the first camp, saying do what you need to do in order to give a stunning live performance. But with Mariah, I think I'm in the second camp. Do what you need to do give us vocal moments on the album that are a little more exciting that Caution, if you are still able to.

Not really at all. I wasn't buying too many hip hop CDs and nor watching the charts either. I was introduced to Kanye West in 2004. A co-worker created a CD of The College Dropout for me. I didn't listened to it at all. So, I really never cared much for Kanye at that time and sure didn't know he was a huge hip hop producer. I love his production now.

I mean, it's either cover it up, or have a moment that Whitney had during her ill-advised tour that should never have happened, where she tried to sing live and it just wasn't good with audience walk out - you can bet that Mariah was aware of that is using every trick she knows to mask it, and quite rightly so. Caution was a good step in the right direction where she doesn't use over the top runs that she can't replicate live, isn't using belts etc. and focuses on the strengths her current voice has such as her lower register and straight forward middle of the road vocals, and produced stellar results. When she slows down, has time to breath and doesn't have to do rapid vocal runs, her voice is good in a different way to what it was.

I do believe we all agree that we all love Mariah. To speak for myself I have grown listening to her and admiring her voice from the beginning from her first album up to the 25th anniversary of Butterfly. She has been very kind to us by still giving us a lot of material and merchandise. Some people may or may not think she owes us super fans anything but on our end, the lambily has also been kind to her, by being loyal, by purchasing her merchandise, by buying all tracks remixes or what not that she comes out up this minute. Some of us have been very kind by being protective of her and her voice for years to the point of being in denial, lipsyncing or prerecorded track or whatever. We fight for her and try to convince her naysayers that she is the best vocalist of all time, not only during Christmas but all the time. A lot of lambs even got tattoos to show devotion and love for Mariah. I had a dog I named Jack because I was crazy over her. We're just hopeful that she can still perform and shut down all the haters, even one performance, just show everyone you still got it. Sorry for the rant.

MC will probably never address the deterioration of her voice. If she did, how could she ever halfway attempt to perform live on tour or on national TV? I am predicting that whatever is coming out next year, will probably be MC's last original projects for a while. Sony Legacy will probably begin to release multiple boxsets yearly in 7 years. 2030 will mark MC's 40 years in the music business. I am ready now for some boxsets. They can only help to sustain her legacy for Roc and Roe.

As I said before, I have reconciled with the fact that her voice has deteriorated. At this point, her talking about what has happened to it would be stating the obvious. Whether it's because of her nodules or her habits, what difference would it make? I don't even care about the smoke and mirrors with the wall of back up singers and pre-recorded tracks anymore. What she shouldn't be saying is that she got her voice back when, evidenced by her latest performance, she didn't.

The best way to address would be an album, sung in a voice without any studio trickery, lamenting the loss of her voice. It would be incredibly powerful and poignant and could either be her curtain call or the beginning of a new era. You don't have to have more octaves than a grand piano and embellish every line to be a great singer. Look at Karen Carpenter. The beautiful thing about her voice was its simplicity.

I think some of the frustration with us on the unkind side of the board is the amount of effort used to cover up the deterioration of her voice. It's amazing that for someone who had one of the best voices of all time, an epic instrument could still go out on stage as if nothing happened. The ear monitors, the humidifiers, the wall of background singers, the endless advertising that she's a songwriter, the lighting, the ensembles. She is about any topic other than being a vocalist. She wrote a whole book and hardly mentioned her voice. Now a long time ago, Stacey asked me, but how would you have her address it? I don't know. But she puts a ton of energy into not addressing it. She puts a ton of excuses into why she doesn't sound good. I love MC and to hear you guys tell it, it's like I want her to be taken out back and beat with a stick. I want her to be happy and live a long life but MC, Just a thought, let's be honest.

What a great post. Thank you for this. It is quite mystifying that people over the age of nine need to hear such a simple, common sense message - especially the delusional "no, we just want Mariah to be her best self" crowd who think we don't know the difference between encouragement, nostalgia, and abuse. I agree with you 100%. Let's all do unto Mariah Carey according to what we would want our own supporters to do us - especially on public message-boards.
