Re: Mariah's sweet spot (99,968) (99,970) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
Yes to all of this. I feel like MC and Robert could make some real magic. I love his covers of Everybody Wants To Rule The World and Cherish the Day by Duran Duran and Sade. Check out his Brandy feature, I believe it's on the first Black Radio.

Yes. It's just so pretty and fluid. I miss the effortless flowiness that was a signature of her sound.

Nicky, you and I are on the same page today. I hope that you don't mind. I purchased Black Radio III this weekend. I love the album too. The Jennifer Hudson collaboration Out Of My Hands made me think of MC especially the reprise improvisation at the end of the song. I can see Robert Glasper and MC collaborating on a song. I just hope she blows our mind with whatever she is working on concerning The Butterfly album. I would be so disappointed if we get several remakes like the Close My Eyes acoustic version. Surely, she wouldn't waste Brandy's vocal talent.

Re: Fair production (99,963) (99,967) by Bobby A from United States
Nicky, you are so right. I love the song and thought too that this is something Mariah could sing and sound quite nice on. Harv wrote the song with his wife, Felisha King from former R&B group Cherish. The vocal production and melody sounds like something Cherish would have sung in the 90s. Remember Do it Do it.

It was a good album. Languishing is modern Mariah at her best.

Re: Memoirs is an attempt at Butterfly II (99,943) (99,965) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I get what you are saying. I have always felt that the Butterfly album was the sound and styles of music that she'd always wanted to make, from the way she hears music. So when Memoirs came out, to me it sounded like it was inspired by the music that she likes to listen to on the radio. I think there's a connection there. I feel like Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is a polar opposite space on the other side of the Rainbow from Butterfly. On Butterfly, she was taking her first real dip into the soulful R&B sound coming from pop and contemporary. Memoirs comes as she'd been immersed in R&B for years and perfects her own sound in R&B with her precision and pop vocal training. There's a connection there. Butterfly is my all time favorite album of hers, but I rarely listen to it. I listen to Memoirs very often, but I can't even compare the two. Literally on opposite sides of the rainbow.

Mariah's sweet spot (99,964) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I've been listening to a lot of Robert Glasper lately. If you haven't heard his latest project, Black Radio III, you really should. The entire Black Radio series is great actually. The sound is a fusion of Jazz and Neo-Soul. He blends these sounds so seamlessly, it's truly stunning. I would love Mariah to make an appearance on BR4 or for them to do an entire body of works together. I wonder if Mariah was inspired by his work for Mimi's Late Nite Valentines Day Mix. I'm one of the lambs that's been asking for a jazz album from our girl for years. Ever since Charmbracelet gave us Subtle Invitation, which is a masterpiece in my opinion. However, I feel that with her 20's vocals, her experimental artistic style, and the maturity of her career, this neo-soul/jazz/dare I say even acid jazz style of music may be a great sweet spot for her to explore, feel comfortably challenged, without competition, and still be able to dip into pop, r&b, hip hop, and anywhere else when she wants. I love the way her voice sounds with live instruments. I love her lower register, her freestyle ad-libbing on the spot, the raspy and sometimes huskiness of her voice, her riffing off of a band. She would kill it in this music space, I'm getting Teena Marie improv vibes. Is The Butterfly Lounge a Neo-Soul/Jazz fusion take on the Butterfly album?

Fair production (99,963) by Nicky from Jasmine's Sofa
I'm not sure how many of your have listened to Normani's new single Fair. It's sonically so beautiful. Her vocals compliment the sound nicely. However, I couldn't help but think of how Mariah would sound on this song. Oh my goodness. The lyrics are actually really beautiful and not out of bounds of Mariah's own lyrical topics. I just imagine Mariah emoting, ad-libbing, and pouring her vocals over the tropical ocean wave-like rhythm; taking the song to a whole new level. I think Brandy would also sound amazing on Fair, her voice would take it to an entirely different place with its airiness, matching the lightness of the production. This is the type of production I want for MC16. Harv produced Fair. I love the different sounds, the dreaminess of it, the beat. To me this production style is heavily influenced by Mariah's impact on music. It doesn't sound directly influenced by her, just to be clear. Anyway, there are some exciting new producers out that create clean and beautiful music, that keeps an air of mystery which is something that I think we all cherish is Mariah's music. I also really enjoy the production work throughout Tinashe's 333 album. I would love to see some of these new producers reimagining with Mariah on The Butterfly Lounge project.

What a lovely respons. The weather is sunny and 10°C, absolutely perfect, you can hear how nature is coming alive, and with the soundtrack of my life to set the tone to it all.

Joachim I loved your post. Congratulations on the apartment, so nice to hear how happy it has made you. It resonated with me because I too have a lovely apartment on the top floor with a South facing balcony, so I know what a pleasure it can be to have your morning coffee with Mariah. It's a joy I often allow myself too. The weather in the UK has been lovely recently, and I often have my breakfast and read the newspaper with Mariah playing inside and gently flowing outside onto the balcony.

Re: Concert ensemble (99,958) (99,960) by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
In 2004, for the Charmbracelet concert here in Malaysia Mariah, she only wear one ensemble which is her pink Automatic Princess top and long pants. She was Curlyriah that night. 40,000 people, lambs or no lambs, came to the stadium that night. I was one of them.

How Mariah has helped me (99,959) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I just recently moved into a new apartment, with a balcony facing south, third floor, with a view to the old fortified town of Fredrikstad in the south east of Norway. It's my first real apartment, and Mariah has been with me this whole time.

This morning, while I sat and had my morning coffee on my balcony in the early spring sun, I played Make it Happen Live at Madison Square Garden, her best performance ever, on my vintage Phillips 60's record player, and then I cried the tears of joy. I had "Don't let go, don't ever, ever let go" as a mantra since a was around 16 years old.

I have had hardships in my life, also being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and has always known Mariah was in a manic state in that infamous TRL episode during the Glitter era. I have found great relief in Mariah's music, especially MIH, UTS, ABMB, WBT, TTB, Butterfly, IBT, and IIO, but have listened to all her music, have all her physical cds, many physical singles, some concerts on DVD, and a few singles on vinyl, every single from TEOM, and a UK Dj exclusive of the CC Music Factory of AYNAF, two discs with remixes, my absolute treasure of a Mariah item. On my bookcase from the 1800s, a Mariah Funky Pop figure is placed, and every Christmas I play Merry Christmas on vinyl.

I love you Mariah.

Isn't that what a party record does? Gets you out of a funky mood and ready to have fun.

I wouldn't call it a party album. It's more of a mood album. I think the closest she gets to party album is the one that came before Memoirs. Still I don't think he has yet released a full on party album.

Re: Memoirs is an attempt at Butterfly II (99,943) (99,953) by Bobby A from United States
Memoirs to me will always be the first Mariah Carey album that did not feel like a Mariah Carey album. It felt like The-Dream and Tricky Stewart album. They brought the beat, some lyrics, and the demos. MC just added her lyrics and vocal styling. Nonetheless, it is a good party record and an album worth revisiting every once and awhile. There has never been a MC release to even come close to Butterfly.

Re: Rank the (US) #1s, it's too quiet (99,951) (99,952) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
Yes, TJ, I know, don't understand how that song became a #1 hit. In the Wikipedia article about TGIFY, one critic believe it's chart success was based purly on Mariah's reputation.

Thank God I Found You is the song I absolutly like the least of all of Mariah's songs, I actually hate it. I rembember when "The Greatest Hits" was released, I used to play both discs at a friend of mine. He didn't dislike Mariah's music, but everytime that song came on, I believe it is the last song on the first disc, he always commented that the song was s**t.

One of the professional reviews compared Memoirs to Rainbow I guess due to the banging first single right down to all the interludes. I find it's a mix of Butterfly, Rainbow and Charmbracelet so basically it's Mariah. It's probably the most Mariah she's ever been on one album now that we know her so well. I guess that's what happens when you only work with one person, it gives you a chance for your own personality to come out more. I like it. I wish it was shortened to 12 songs like Butterfly and maybe it would be a little stronger like in 1997.

Re: Memoirs is an attempt at Butterfly II (99,943) (99,948) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I feel Memoirs is the album when Mariah started to make bland songs without melodies and impossible to sing along to, and she hasn't stopped since. She needs to go back to make songs with good hooks you can sing at a karaoke bar, like Dreamlover, Always Be My Baby, My All, Heartbreaker, We Belong Together and I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time. The Distance was good, though.

Wow. She did the climbing notes of the so high part. I can't recall MC doing it live, like she did it on the recording.

Re: Memoirs is an attempt at Butterfly II (99,943) (99,946) by Bill from the UK
Memoirs is cohesive and consistent, but that's also its problem. Having one producer throughout means it all sounds the same after a while. The finger snaps are already pretty dated.
