Yeah, I realized the big absence of Tina Turner too. But considering she performed with her and paid tribute to her in 2008, it's not as striking as not naming Mariah. Maybe it was Madonna or her team who didn't want Maria's name to be included. Maybe it has nothing to do with that, who knows. I would like a Beyoncé - Mariah collaboration. And I totally agree with your thought about the cultural apropiation of the underground ballroom culture. But it's also good that she is naming all of the legendary houses like "House of Extravaganza", "House of Ninja" etc that appear in the legendary "Paris is Burning" documentary.
By the way as much as I love "Vogue", if you listen to "Deep In Vogue" by Malcom McLaren featuring Willy Ninja, which is prior to Madonna's "Vogue", they sound almost the same. Today they will sue her for plagiarism lol.

Janet and Madonna didn't have 5% of the record, direct quotes back and forth animosity that Madonna and Mariah did. Look up the quotes.

I don't think Bey snubs Mariah. I don't know why y'all think Mariah is entitled to another aritst's mention. This forum is such an echo chamber.

Janet would've been nixed if Madonna had any say. I guess we can once and for all rule out a collaboration between Beyonce and MC. It's too bad but I think during E=MC2 a song would've hit #1 (Migrate ft. Beyonce & T-Pain).

I read this board everyday but don't post however, I feel strongly about this topic and decided to post. I don't know why Mariah always suck up to Bey and Bey just keep on snubbing Mariah.
When Bey released her clothing line for kids, Mariah was one of the first to promote it on Instagram by letting Monroe model it and she sent a shout out to Bey but got totally snubbed with no acknowledgement from Bey. Last year, Mariah also wished Bey happy birthday and posted a pic of her on her Instagram status but got snubbed again.
I think that Bey thinks that she is better than Mariah and continues to snub her despite Mariah being humble enough and making public attempts to show love to Bey. Mariah has a billion times more talent and class compared to Bey and she should stop making herself look foolish with further attempts because she will get snubbed again.

My guess is that it's related to a combination of things: poor diet, lack of exercise, lack of quality sleep or irregular sleep schedule, and alcohol consumption. Mariah has a tendency to cycle in and out of crash dieting as well, so I'm sure that has a negative impact on her metabolism.

Well, Beyonce might think that she is now in the league of Mariah, which is obviously not. Earlier in her career, Beyonce acknowledged Mariah as the reason why she started singing and also acknowledged that Mariah's voice comes from God. Now she started thinking that she is in the same league which she will never be.

Whole lotta munching going on and poor wardrobe choices. That dress looks like something she fitted in 2008.

I always imagine that she looked at him as a secure place, initially, and when she realized it was a Barbie doll on a shelf routine she said no ma’am. And bounced! I do like your interpretation, I think it fits.

I truly do not think she snubbed her. I think we would like Beyoncé to name drop MC, But I think it was meant to be a moment to pay homage to [Vogue] and black quare ballroom culture. MC simple does not fit into that theme.

Perhaps they checked in with Mariah, and it was a firm no from Mariah. Mariah can be very protective of her brand, and legacy, and having her name mentioned over a sample of Vogue is probably not in tune with what she would want. Other than that I can't figure it out tbh. And in all honesty, I doubt they would have checked with all the people they name dropped, so it's probably something else. Either way, Mariah is an absolute legend, and a far better songwriter than Beyoncé or Madonna, so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Also, I use the term songwriter in the loosest sense of the word when referring to Beyoncé.

Aside from the [obvious] Mariah snub, she also didn't mention Mary J., Tina Turner, Patti LaBelle, her co-star and one of only 17 EGOT winners ever, JHug or Donna summer (even with so much disco flavour on some of the tracks).

As someone who struggles with my weight, I have to wonder what's going on with MC. She looks terrible in that black dress. And she was pretty big in the Hampton's picture. Oprah once said something that rings true for me and probably MC: You can tell by my size whether or not things are going great in my life.

I think it's as simple as Madonna not liking Mariah, and like you said Madonna saying Mariah can't be mentioned. Like Alicia [Keys] gets a shout out, but not Mariah. Aretha, Mariah, it would have flowed like butter to add Mariah in there. Also, I think it's fascinating that Beyoncé used this [Vogue] sample (it's a sample even though they are calling it a feature, the vocals aren't new). When Madonna is the queen of cultural appropriation, starting with when she stole the vogue concept from the underground ballroom community.

Maybe it was Madonna who stipulated "don't mention Mariah if you're going to use my song". Just a theory. I hope perhaps Bey has something planned with Mariah. I like Renaissance, I think it's great if you like Ballroom House.

Article about Honey (100,913)

It's so true, it's really as sweet as it was 25 years later. It's one of her best up-tempos right after Fantasy. It still sounds so fresh, soulful. Mariah at her best. Plus one of the best videos ever. I just love the Bond girl idea. Honey is just phenomenal. Perfect sample, perfect remixes. I miss that Mariah. (Fun, independent and carefree.) Yes she was so young, I know. I will always remember when the song was played on the radio 97, after 3 seconds I knew it was Mariah with the new song. And the video was everywhere. Sweet memories of the late summer 97.

Yeah. I know Beyoncé is entitled to namedrop whoever she considers in her new song, but I feel it's a little unfair that she is paying homage to the most famous razialiced women in music history without naming Mariah Carey. She included some big legendary names like Betty Davis (the funk icon), Rosetta Tharpe, Sade, Whitney, Janet, Anita Baker and a long etcetera. She even names Nicki Minaj and RiRi (Rihanna), which makes Mariah's absence even more striking. Beyoncé once said that "Vision of love" was one of the reasons why she started singing. She also said that Maria's voice comes from God. MC worked with Jay Z long before he became worldwide known in songs like Heartbreaker or You Got Me. Destiny's Child were big fans of Mariah, and you could notice her influence in their way of singing and phrasing, the melismatic singing that Mariah developed as a trademark during the 90's and that later will use Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande, etc. Maria's influence on the female singers that came after her is undeniable, but few credit her nowadays.
