AIWFCIY finally hits #1 in the UK (96,901)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
Congrats Mariah for having her third charttopper in the UK (first one she actually wrote), and congrats to the UK lambs and music-listening public for finally giving Mariah what she deserves this time. I kinda hope Wham also gets to top the charts next week with Last Christmas. It would be a lovely tribute to George Michael.

A brunette Christmas (96,900)
by Matty from Vancouver Canada
| |
|
|
For the next Christmas spectacular era that MC treats us too, I hope she gives us a brunette Christmas, like she did in Christmas era number one, 1994. I feel like her brunette locks are more inviting and beautiful then her blond-caramel, and I've personally always loved the debut, debut Christmas album and Imperfect Angel (ah la Oprah) moments she's give us the most the most, out of all her hair moments.

"Plus, those who criticize her for only being relevant during the holidays are just looking for any reason to justify their dislike or hatred towards Mariah."
What on Earth are you in about? Have you lost your mind? She *is* only relevant at Christmas. People may buy her book (not *that* many) but they sure don't buy her music and she makes little impact in the charts anywhere in the world. The facts are facts are facts.
"I see these people all the time in comments sections and I'm like, 'sure, hun, dismiss that success because it is all too common and all legendary artists have their own global chart-topping Christmas hit'."
Nobody is dismissing Mariah's dominance and icon status during Christmas. She has attached herself to Christmas without precedent in the modern era.
"The memoir doing really well is the most obvious proof of her relevance, because she is selling her life story, not music."
Your interpretation of the word "relevant" is questionable.
"Despite every questionable or objectionable thing she has done in the past, after all these years, people still actually care about her - the person, or at least the celebrity."
She is an icon of our times. It is undisputed. Or should be undisputed. Her complete lack of relevance musically outside of December can be made evident in many ways.

Mariah invents her own "relevance" (96,895)
by Geronimo from USA
| |
|
|
I'm one of those fans who could live well without Christmastime Mariah. But I have to admit, while so many fans bemoan Mariah's lapse in relevance, it is just like Mariah to invent her own form of relevance. After so many records broken, she's the first artist to make holiday domination a global achievement category. It just goes to show you that dwelling in the past while whining about it is for unimaginative losers.

Sleigh Ride (96,893)
by 123 from USA
| |
|
|
This was probably my favorite part of the special, probably because it's a mew song. She sounds so good. I love when she sings in her full mid voice and avoids whispers. No need for belts when your tone in full voice is so buttery. She adds a few slight inflections to pepper the delivery and throws in some whistles to add that wow factor. I love that when she gets off the sleigh the camera angle is no loner just on her "good side" Mariah never stares into the camera and moves around naturally and not once does she try to give a sexy look or pose. It's perfect. I love this fan made video.

Re: All I Want For Christmas UK number one (96,890) (96,891)
by Webmaster Eric from the Netherlands

"All I want for Christmas is you" is Number 1 on The Official Big Top 40. This is not the Official Singles Chart which is broadcasted on BBC Radio 1. The Official Big Top 40 is a radio chart show broadcast every Sunday from 4-7pm on Global's Capital and Heart networks. The Official Singles Chart is the most important chart in the UK and on that list "All I want for Christmas is you" is at Number 2.

I mean, I don't live over there but from what I saw, yes they're already predicting based on half a week that AIWFCIY will be #1 once the chart week is over. And that gets announced on Friday.

If it tops the chart for at least 2 weeks every year until 2028, it can, assuming that no other song in that time period beats Old Town Road. Being #1 cumulatively for that long will set a few other records as well, such as it being a possible contender for Song of the Decade (that isn't from this decade) or something to that effect. We're getting waaaay ahead of ourselves, but we can dream.

All I Want For Christmas UK number one (96,887)
by Lee from UK

I have seen this reported in at least two outlets now but I don't think it's true. When you look at the official charts Ariana Grande is still at number one with Mariah at number two. Are they reporting prematurely? Will Mariah reach number one on Friday?

Mariah is queen of blocking her own to number 1 with her own song. I hope that O Santa spends at least 1 week in BB Hot 100 at #1. "Where are Arianators?" I think that's the question now instead of "Where's Ari?"
I was not expecting AIWFCIY to be #2 this soon. I was actually "avoiding" the song but it has a life on its own. Hopefully it gives its little brother O Santa a chance to be #1.

Ari's fans are known for getting albums and singles to #1 by streaming alone (well, streaming and abysmal sales), and when you factor in the Lambily and JHud's fans, it seems like a no-brainer. I'm worried AIWFCIY will block it.

AIWFCIY #2 this week on the Hot 100 (96,880)

Which also begs the question: How many more years until Mariah collects 18 total weeks at #1 with AIWFCIY to get the record back from Old Town Road?

It has been on Spotify since it dropped. It won't be a problem to fans who would like to search for it and listen to it intently. However, a good chunk of listeners who put on Spotify as their background music and can't be bothered to made their own holiday playlists will tend to just go with the ones curated by Spotify, which Oh Santa! wasn't a part of until it was just added very recently, halfway through the tracking week. It does waste the overwhelming initial hype it got when during the first 48 hours following its release. New holiday singles are typically instantly added to that playlist the moment they drop.
Oh Santa! is Mariah's highest listened song upon release with over 700,000 plays in its first day, but if we factor in the fact that Ariana, a Spotify titan, features in it, and that Save The Day was listened to over 400,000 times in 24 hours, Oh Santa!'s stats are quite disappointing for possibly the most hyped holiday single ever.
Playlisting is key promotion for older artists that aren't huge on Spotify. Despite the Ari and JHud feature, the song is still a Mariah track that could benefit from the extra push Spotify could have provided. I've seen Ariana fans on social media basically bully Spotify into putting the song in their New Holiday Music playlist, but I'm hearing they haven't even put it in the New Music Friday playlist the day it dropped like all the other new releases do, which is one of their key playlists most listeners look forward to.
I remember Taylor's folklore could have done much better on Spotify when it was released, but it didn't due to the lack of inclusion of its tracks in Spotify's playlisting. Taylor's still hot commodity, though, so that didn't really matter much.

I'm confused. I'm listening to Oh Santa! on Spotify right now. Who cannot listen to it and why?
I must say this is the most exciting thing Mariah has done in a long time. I could have done without the hideous schoolyard chanting in this version because it ruins the smoothness and fluidity that the added vocals of Ariana and Jennifer bring. And I won't talk about Mariah's terrible look in the video. Or the hideous Microsoft PowerPoint 95 coverart.
I've listened to this song on Spotify about 50 times so far and I'm not bored of it at all. I love it. I hope she actually gets a Number 1 with this.
