Firecracker is my choice. The cameo version is good too, but Firecracker has a better beginning, stronger chorus and it feels like an endless party. It really makes you want to dance. Singing dadadada.

I'd throw Janet in there. I'd say her first 2 albums where she had zero creative control over are part of her bottom recordings. She has always been an album artist, and even on her worst albums since Control (Discipline, 20 Y.O., Damita Jo), she still made an effort to keep her albums flow as one unit even when the various genres and sounds she experiments with make achieving such a bit challenging. She doesn't have as many recognizable deep cuts, but each of her albums work well sonically and thematically. The impeccable run of albums from Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, janet., The Velvet Rope to even All For You - more consistently enjoyable and better constructed albums than anything Michael has released after Bad, which is interestingly is also the time when Janet started eclipsing his brother in terms of critical and chart success. Even Janet's Unbreakable is much stronger than Michael's album of the same name.

It was too late to rush release and beat J.Lo to radio. J.Lo's was released without warning. I do like the Firecracker version, feeling it is much more in line with the eighties theme and sounds better on the album.

Firecracker version all the way. It is exciting, fun and infectious with that amazing intro and outro and more energetic vocals and ofcourse that infamous sample.

Firecracker vs. Cameo Loverboy (96,364)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

I'm not one to crap on other people's preferences or their reasons for such preferences, but I really think that many people who say they "prefer" the Cameo version over the Firecracker one just have nostalgia glasses on.
I remember hearing Loverboy for the first time as a kid having difficulty to make out the words she was singing. The chorus was a little too muddled and hard to latch on to. It was the first lead single of hers that I could consciously remember listening to for the first time (I was just too young to recall anything released before Fantasy) and feeling underwhelmed by, especially since Fantasy, Honey and Heartbreaker were all so good.
It was also the lead single that I recall really trying to like just because it was Mariah's. I've eventually grown to appreciate the dissonance between the melodies and the overpowering sample, Mariah's vocals (which sound like she had a cold when recording them), and the limp singing of the chorus.
The Firecracker version may have an intro that is about 8 bars too long, but when the first verse kicks in, it really hits you and the bounce doesn't let up until the song ends. Its delivery is cheekier, more fun and engaging. In a way sort of reminds me of how the Bam Jam Soul Mix of Dreamlover, which was reportedly intended to be the final version but was also shelved.

Solid Mariah (96,363)
by Geronimo from USA

If you exclude Mariah's top 10% and bottom 10% songs and albums in terms of quality and/or recognition, can you think of another artists since 1990 with such a thick, solid recording record left over? She's never just thrown songs on albums as filler, but made each project with sincerity and skill. Her deep cuts rival Michael Jackson, the Beatles, and Stevie Wonder for the sheer number of "obscure" songs and albums that another generation will discover and wonder where that music has been their all their life. I think the concept of her legacy is almost impossible to frame in this moment. The fact that some people even think reactions to her public persona will determine her impact in the future shows that few people consult history.

I love "One Night", had it been included on "Daydream", it would've definitely been a potential single, but I guess it wasn't saccharine enough. You can clearly hear all the beautiful nuances of Mariah's voice in its full expression. Out of all the 90's tracks on "The Rarities", it's the only one you can distinctively recognize as a "Daydream track".
Loverboy (Firecracker) is bouncy and contagious, with better vocals and no messy-sounding like the Cameo one. The sample is far superior and better executed too. Sadly it just went to waste on JLo's song.
"Here We Go Around Again" is a track I never skip, because I enjoy it very much. Every time I listen to it, I can't help but always wait for a great set of high notes that never come, lol. I think it was a good idea leaving it out of "Mariah Carey", not because the song is bad or anything, but compared to the rest of the tracks on "Mariah Carey", it sounds dated.
If Mariah has other tracks like "One Night", "All I Live For", and "Out Here on My Own", we'll definitely see more rarities in the future. Sadly, unlike #1's, the new recorded track is subpart. For the next one she should secure a #1 with a duet with Ariana Grande.

Agreed. Loverboy (Firecracker) would've debuted at number one. It's just more hard hitting than the Cameo (Candy) version imho. I could see the video for the Firecracker version being more of a juke joint style video sort of like the one she did for Don't Stop (Jamaican Funk 4), but more uptempo with energetic hip hop dancers in the background. It gives me jamboree vibes. Lol.
I went from thinking Loverboy was her weakness lead single (up until that point) to it being one of my absolute go to favorites now. I can't help but I want to strut my stuff in public while listening to it on my headphones. I be having to catch myself. #majorupgrade

One Night reminds me of something Prince and/or TLC would do. Melodically and harmony wise it gives TLC Waterfalls vibes. The whole storytelling and subject matter aspect reminds me of some Prince's songs; along the lines Raspberry Beret, Boys And Girls etc.

Have to agree with you. I never liked the Cameo version and was never a lover of the remix with Da Brat. Firecracker version was much better. MC should have stuck to her guns and rush released this version before JLo.

It is well-documented that I am no fan of the debut album. But this song is infectious and fun. I even love the ending Mariah czlls "iffy". Iffy? It was perfect. This should have been second in the tracklisting on the album instead on There's Got To Be A Way which is terrible. It also should have been a Migra... I mean a single.

So even Treacle Tots hates One Night. I do not get this. At all. One Night is Daydream era voice Mariah opening with a beautiful ballad intro and bursting into a wickedly funny, bouncy, melodic, fun song. I imagine Summer sunset evenings with young groups of girls and guys in shorts walking through Miami by the beach, electric possibilities in the air, everyone having fun, laughing, throwing glances, enjoying life. And Mariah walking through them singing to them to keep it in their pants.
This song is amazing.

Firecracker Loverboy vs Cameo Loverboy vs Remix Lo (96,352)
by Andrew from the United Kingdom

Miss Stacey, you have relinquished your right to an opinion by stating you prefer the Cameo version of Loverboy. For the love(rboy) of all that is good and pure, what is it about the slow-paced, no-chorus, bad-intro, two-merged-songs Loverboy that you prefer?
Honestly, Firecracker Loverboy is a thousand times superior to Cameo Loverboy and exponentially superior to Remix Loverboy. We all have our opinions. I am just lucky mine are always correct.
I think Firelover Crackerboy is one of the most exciting songs Mariah has ever recorded and I can only the imagine the excitement on the set when the crew heard it. That song in 2001 would have debuted at 1 and stayed there for months.
Would be interesting to hear which version everyone prefers and why.

I meant "the former being a better album". Wow editing your thoughts on your mobile can be tough. Daydream is the far more creative and artistic effort. Music Box was a transitional album between Mariah's earlier, more traditional pop-soul stuff an in some ways a precursor to Daydream's R&B influences.

Article: Allure is not happy about being left out of memoir (96,345)
by TMG from USA

The "memoirs" tries to rewrite history with countless falsehoods, deceptive stories, omissions of people/events and omissions of fact about actual events that happened. It took an entire village behind the scenes to create this long career fans could support. The facts that are left out lies to the Lambilies and clearly this "author" knew they will believe whatever is in print in this aggressively marketed and promoted "memoir". It served a purpose targeting a buying audience that contributes to a marketing success story which in the end is apparently more important to its authors than the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
