William, thou art normally wise. But Ribbon is not the best song from Memoirs. Languishing undoubtedly is. It's pistols at dawn for anyone who disagrees.

These Halls of Fame are bizarre, aren't they? Someone, explain the premise. What happened this year that made Whitney eligible? What material change has their been in her qualifying criteria? She's dead. Nothings changed. What makes Chaka Khan not eligible? The restrictions on hke many can be inducted? Why the restriction? Either you meet the criteria or do not.
I would like to know on what criteria Mariah falls short in these things. I cant imagine any. Why is Missy Eliot acknowledged ibti a Hall of Fame for songwriting when she has written less songs than Mariah, her songs have sold wildly less, her songs have not changed trends in music but rather followed them, and so on.
These is no logic to any of this. It's a bit like JLo getting an Icon Award before Mariah. No logic.

Your comments are sexist. My sex doesnt mean I cannot criticise somebody of the opposite sex. To infer that it does is sexist. On that note, you mean seek "counselling" not "counsel".
You may, as a defined bisexual person, be sexually attracted to Mariah's bare breasts - which is fine. But your sexuality is of little interest to anyone else and so the attention you ordered for it has been delayed due to shipping errors.
To infer you are sexually attracted to Mariah is just plain weird for a genuine fan. It actually creeps me out that you look at Mariah for being an object of sexual desire and not just a musical genius. It's creepy.
Needless to say that is what she wants, however. Mariah paid for a giant pair of tits and wants everyone to look at them all of the time. Even when it's a wet suit.

I think IWKWLI was #1 in Brazil for 6 months. Nobody suggested Mariah to record it, it was her idea, or so she said. In an interview she said she had told Nick about wanting to cover a classic in the vein of Without You. I like her version of the song, but I hate the fact she skipped the second verse of the original and the outcome sounds rushed and incomplete to me.

Celine (92,356)
by Timothy from USA
| |
|

I really debated posting this but I have wanted to see Celine live for a while now because I like a lot of her music, respect her accomplishments and as a huge concert buff, believe that you should see all the greats at least once. So since I had not made it to Vegas to see her or Mariah's shows there yet, when Celine came to Atlanta last Saturday, I had to check it out.
First and foremost, let me say. The woman deserves an Academy Award for acting. There is professional lip syncing (Celtic Women/Janet Jackson) and then there is Celine. If it was a sport, she would be the Olympic gold medalist, ten times over. The way she managed her head movements, eye raises, hand movements, neck turns and contortions to make a show that she sung 40% (generous) live was astounding. When you pair that with the best engineering work I have ever heard at a live event, you get a world class show. I didn't know what to expect since the live parts of her Jacksonville show two nights before revealed a pretty "fragile" voice condition but she was in much better voice for our show. I must say all the lip syncing (of entire songs in some cases) means that her voice can be great when it needs to be (case in point the new solo version of The Prayer or the live parts of it).
What was most surprising to me though was the packed arena ate it up. Without question. I was surrounded by people (including my mom who I didn't have the heart to take her euphoria away after) who were literally commenting on how her voice has not changed since the beginning Of her career and how amazing she sounded. Even when the two highest climaxes in The Power of Love and All By Myself were just too perfect to be human (layered, stacked, echoed) and two of the spots where the engineers use older tracks because she doesn't/maybe can't re-sing them now.
It made me wonder why Celine gets this pass from the clearly Adult Contemporary crowd when the same, usually discriminating crowd (albeit slightly older) was dismissive and critical as we were leaving Lionel Richie and Mariah a couple years back. I will give you that the engineering during Caution was the best yet and I didn't see the usual people looking around in a is she/isn't she singing kind of way but as a comparison my mother leaned over and said during that show, I know she was just lip syncing just now when Mariah wasn't even lip syncing in that particular spot of the show (lol). I find it fascinating. I am not ready to call it a race thing. Maybe it is a better management/marketing thing. Maybe because Mariah was heralded the best singer and put on a certain perceived level during every interview while Celine was building her live following and staying musically consistent.
Either way, Mariah sings much more of her show live but was performing in a theater that wasn't sold out when I saw here in March while Celine was performing to a sold out arena of people raving about an artificial voice. Hell, even I was giving standing ovations when I have been following the YouTube debate on her long enough to know which parts were artificial. I got caught up in the polish of it all as well when I am just bracing for Mariah to look convincing at climaxes when I see her live while I wait to hear and enjoy her real voice during other moments of the show. I just hope that the new management team will do something to her presentation that gets her on the same level as her peers.
If anyone has a chance to go to a secondary market ticket site and score Celine tickets, I would encourage you to do so. It was a great show. But "show" is the operative word.

I too always felt that Inseparable should have been the second single - either with or without Trey Lorenz on it. I was in shock that it wasn't even considered for a single release. My "Memoirs" choices would have been the folliowing:
1. Obsessed 2. Inseparable (with or without Trey Lorenz) 3. Angels Cry (with or without Ne-Yo) 4. Betcha Gon Know (solo)
Like "Migrate", "Betcha Gon' Know" also charted on Billboard - #1 on Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles and #66 on Billbord Digital Song Sales.

It didn't have anything to do with the powers that be, it just was recorded right after Memoirs had already been released. I like 100%, but let's be honest, the song is good and inspirational, but it was more of the same fast singing type song. Nothing wrong with it, but WBT, SIO, BB, and ISIL have already used that technique, it was tired at that point. And remember, ever since TEOM, Mariah is about 75% of the powers that be when it comes to her music, and when she doesn't get her way, she doesn't have any problem letting you know.

IWTKWLI was, in many countries, her best charting single since Touch My Body, and she gave some brilliant live performances of the song at the time, plus, the loose brown curls of the debut era returned which was beautiful. 100% was again, another samey rehash in the key of Bye Bye, I Stay In Love etc. The best song from Memoirs was Ribbon, and that should have been the second (or even first) single. The harmonies on the middle 8 are divine.

It is a shame this song never got included anywhere and just fell off the map. It's one of my favourite songs from the Memoirs era. Not sure it would've been a good choice as second single though. Of course neither was I Want to Know What Love Is, but at least it gave her phenomenal success in Brazil. I wish she released Inseparable, which is an outstanding song and could've had a strong presence in the market with the right promotion in my opinion. I like Trey's input on the remix too, even if the cut&paste could've been better polished.

100% as second single after Obsessed (92,347)
by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia

I wonder why the powers that be at that time did not include 100% in the Memoirs album. This song would be the best follow up single after Obsessed. And the song was meant originally to be the theme song of Precious, but was pulled off last minute. If the song remained as the theme song of Precious, the song might had a chance to be nominated for Oscar or Golden Globe. I think the song I Want To Know What Love Is was too bland, uninspiring and too safe after the controversial single, Obsessed.

Important recordings (92,346)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
| |
|

Mariah has proven to be a very versatile artist tackling different genres of music throughout her storied career. But if I had to choose what recordings are most important to her career I would say these three in no particular order. 1.Vision Of Love was the introduction to the world of who Mariah Carey was, also this song become an inspiration for other female vocalists. It was also a popular song on both sides of the spectrum of pop and R&B. 2. Fantasy. This song in particular brought the Hip-pop formula to the mainstream and has been a staple ever since. 3. All I Want For Christmas is you. This song has taken a life of its own and become a timeless Christmas classic, and has gained more popularity than many other standard Christmas songs.

Love a list Bill. Definitely those three but I'd also include I'll Be There, as they were afraid her popularity was fading in the US at the time of it and there was all this conjecture of her only being a studio artist who need bells and whistles (pun intended) to create what she did. I'll Be There rocked her into the new opinion of Mariah the performer in the general public's eyes.
I Know What You Want was also career defining as being the first big hit post Glitter that made her look somewhat cool to the kids.
I'd also include WBT alongside It's Like That as the Dupri effect. It's Like That did all the heavy lifting in making Mariah even more likeable again before the monster hit of WBT.

I honestly thought her lead song was cute, her music is not my cup of tea. But I admire the type of women she is, she been through a lot and I love survivors. But a lot of lambs laugh/criticise at Mariah pure sales when in fact the biggest superstars don't sell that much better. The younger generation don't buy music (rarely they do) and the older generation don't stream (rarely they do). Mariah needs to cater to the younger audience more, a [sic] album for grown people (even though many young lambs love it).

Nothing would've done well in the States with Mottola bribing radio directors to keep her off the air. In spite of all of that, Through the Rain was one of the best selling singles of 02 and its remix hit #1 on the dance chart. Had sales counted for more than 25% of tallies then her track would've charted higher.

She has a few times with Migrate. A news clip was shown with Mariah walking away and someone asked her if Migrate would be a single. She rolled her eyes and said, "It's not a "Mariah Carey" single." It didn't sound like she was in agreement. It sounded like sarcasm. Mariah was pretty vocal about Bye Bye, not being the best follow up to Touch My Body. Although, she was even more vocal about the Foreigner's remake not being a good single choice. It's pretty clear that her label wanted Mariah to stay in the vein of balladeer. It makes little sense to not release Migrate when it's already charting on the Hot 100 of its own accord.

I included WBT because while Mariah very much held her own during the battle of the divas in the 90s, the teen-pop and Latin-pop wave towards the end of that decade ushered in a new generation of fans, and the 90s divas started to get weeded out one by one. Only Janet, Madonna and Mariah were left standing. Janet suffered post Nipplegate, and Madonna was a different artist, so Mariah was the only real diva vocalist left as Whitney was in a dark place and Celine just wasn't bringing the hits anymore. The fact that Mariah was able to take her diva-pop into that decade and was able to captivate a new legion of younger fans by the strength of WBT (and, to a lesser extent, the singles that followed) which unintentionally stood out from what was in the airwaves in 2004-2005. It was refreshing to both the older fans and the younger ones. If we're going by influence, it's the Mariah hit that newer R&B starlets like Ella Mai, SZA, H.E.R. etc. actually consciously grew up listening to.

Charmbracelet singles (92,338)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

Sorry, as much as I actually enjoy Charmbracelet, it is one of Mariah's least radio-friendly albums (if not the least) mostly due to her thinner, more airy whispering then. The songs are lovely but most don't really lend themselves well to radio. Considering the current music landscape at the time of release, I feel like the only songs that stood a chance were:
1. Through The Rain (if only for its message and how it plays into Mariah's storyline in 2002) 2. The One (since J.Lo's All I Have was a hit that winter, this would have done well) 3. You Got Me (nice, playful summer bop to be released after the popularity of I Know What You Want has started to die down, which was dropped in the spring of 2003) 4. Yours (sounds like an early autumn track; a shortened, remixed version with JT who was huge at the time)
