Re: Signature song (91,996) (92,015) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I think you may succumbing to unfairly downplaying the signifcance of something you just don't support. ABMB is known by almost everybody. I have done (murdered) it and seen it done (murdered worse) in karaoke many times over in the past decade. And it (almost without fail) makes everyone sit up, smile and sing along. People know it. To say it did not impact outside of the US is simply not true. I am pretty sure it debuted at Number 3 in the UK (this may not be accurate but I can't be arsed to check). So it's okay to prefer All I Want but other songs should not be downplayed.

And, speaking of All I Want For Christmas is You, it is certainly genius. I didn't say it is not her signature song. I simply said I do not want it to be.

Mariah risks turning herself into a gimmick wheeled out once a year to sing that tune. For her own sake she needs a hell of a lot of emphasis on her non-seasonal work. With Fantasy's inclusion in a new trailer, Daydream should really be pushed as a significant moment in musical history. As should Butterfly. Perhaps with concerts (in London, of course) singing those albums from start to finish. And I think Mariah should be trying to get headline gigs at festivals like Glastonbury.

A career is for life, not just for Christmas.

Tom Webster pretty much articulated everything that I feel and think about this video. Also, I would much rather watch a car crash aftermath than watch the Auld Lang Syne video.

I remember Mariah was going to sing After Tonight with Luis Miguel.

I blocked that video from my system. It's horrible. IWTKWLI and H.A.T.E.U. are horrendous too.

Re: Finally number one in Germany (91,988) (92,011) by virgo.miss from australia
Well I was going to reply yesterday to say it was only at 10 here, but the new charts came out today and it was at 1. But then Wham is at 3 and Buble at 4 so there must have been some serious festivity going on in the last week. They are also the only 3 songs in the top 10 I know.

After Tonight has always sounded like a Toni song to me. I can hear her singing it. That might have been a good mix.

Fourth of July acapella (92,009) by Licia from USA
They posted this Fourth of July acapella like they knew I needed it. I'm not a huge Butterfly album person like alot y'all, but it's creeping up my list slowly with this song alone. Never thought I'd find a song that could possibly knock Breakdown off my most loved song from Butterfly, but it's doing it. The song is just perfect.

Merry Christmas projected to be #1 on BB200 (92,008) by JC from United States
Per Rolling Stone charts, "Merry Christmas" album is projected to be the number one album this week. Their projections have been consistent the last few weeks with the actual Billboard 200 (at least with the top 5 albums). If this comes to fruition, this means MC will have a double number one both on the Hot 100 and 200.

Her PR team was on fire. The rollout of all the extra treats you mentioned starting on November 1st with the deluxe album release was perfect. AIWFCIY is universal. It unites all people no matter your faith, culture, etc.

Re: Signature song (91,991) (92,006) by Stacey from USA
During Christmas, of course, AIWFCIY is played a ton when radio stations play all Christmas music. On December 26th through all of next year until radio stations play all Christmas again, the Mariah song I hear is ABMB. Heard it the other day. Never fails to lighten my day. Such a timeless song.

Re: Signature song (91,991) (92,005) by John from USA
I know I am probably in the minority here when I say that, it has been and forever will be Vision of Love. Why? It's the first song to come out that showed off vocals that would inspire a whole new generation of vocalists. It's the song that made me wanna listen to radio (up until then, I couldn't understand why my older sister was hooked to listening to 80s music). VOL structurally sounded like no other song before, or after, it was released.

Then again, the fact that many here are proposing different songs to be Mariah's signature or torch song per se, just means she is such a great musician and songwriter that no one song defines her music career. Does she have to have just one?

Undeniably: Whitney's is I Will Always Love You (which easily replaced Greatest Love of All when it became such a monster hit). Celine's is My Heart Will Go On (and a distant runner up would be It's All Coming Back To Me Now). Toni's would be Unbreak My Heart. What measures do we use to identify a Mariah signature/torch song? Is it the length of time at number one - if so, it would be One Sweet Day and We Belong Together. If it's a song that's almost universally beloved and inspirational, then it would be Hero. AIWCIY is a Christmas song that is now a modern classic, and although I'm pretty sure Christians and non-Christians alike appreciate this song, it's not one the latter would necessarily gravitate to.

The difference with Mariah and the other artists mentioned above is that she writes her own songs, and most sound good to this day. Sure she has some dated songs such as Thank God I Found You, but a whole lost of Celine's, Whitney's, and Toni's sound dated, and can be easily removed as "signature song contenders". Let's celebrate the fact because Mariah has been such a prolific songwriter. Mariah had such a wide reach with her music, that maybe, just maybe, she has no signature/torch song. Seriously though: does Mariah even need to have one?

Haha. It's up there with "100%" and its elongated thinning camera lens in terms of bad videos. I think Auld Lang Syne took all of 20 minutes to film and edit together lol.

Auld Lang Syne video (92,003) by Dove from United States
When it first came out I cringed so hard and hated it but now I love it so much. It makes me smile and proves Mariah has a sense of humor and doesn't take herself as seriously as people think. Otherwise she wouldn't have kept it up. It makes me love her even more. I wouldn't want all of her videos to be this low budget but I'm glad it exists.

Re: Signature song (92,002) by Dove from United States
It's definitely AIWFCIY. But I also associate Fantasy, Hero, and Vision of Love with her too.

Re: Signature song (91,994) (92,001) by MusicfanJ from Germany
I would say "Hero" too. But AIWFCIY is really close to it. For the younger ones it surely is the Christmas anthem. "Without you" is also still used here in Europe if it comes to Mariah. On my personal list it's "Hero", "Fantasy" and "Vision of love" as her signature song.

The song I was talking about was WBT (the people has [sic] to know). Not many songs give me the same feeling every time I listen to it. I'm sorry for using urban slang. I don't really worry about my grammar on the internet, I write things and post it without double checking. But I'm gonna follow the rules. I have to bring a [sic] old tweet from Mariah (just for laughs).

Re: Signature song (91,996) (91,999) by We are Lambily from USA
AIWFCIY is a special song but let's keep it for the Christmas (even though I listen to it during the summer sometimes lol).

Every generation has a Mariah signature song, for mine it's, that song slaps so hard, ugh it's my favorite song ever (aside from Mariah's own music). Everyone I know who have heard the song loves it. And it's remix is explosive. I love the remade verses, the rap verses, the high notes at the end. Her remixes are one of her best. I'm so mad changed the rules so people don't remake their songs anymore in the way people used to back in the days, remixes don't do what they used to do.

Btw it was the Madison Square Garden performances, ugh she slayed so hard. Every time life knocks Mariah down, she gets up 10 times harder. The resilience this women has, I'm so inspired to never give up in life, everyone has bad days, hers is just magnified due to the global superstar she is.

Too damn legendary (91,997) by We are Lambily from USA
Just rewatched Mariah perform, her tone was too magical and beautiful. Hitting notes in the 5 octave. That women is extraordinarily and special. Her beauty, her grace, the way she connects with the audience. Her team better have major stuff ready for her next year, a memoir, possible new album? We need documentaries, let her visit a few of the major talk shows in order for people too see her happiness. Also why doesn’t Mariah feature on other people songs like she used to. We really stan one of music most successful and talented artist. Top 3. Dead or alive.

Re: Signature song (91,991) (91,996) by Bill from the UK
It is definitely AIWFCIY. That song will go on for generations like White Christmas and The Christmas Song (Chestnuts). It's used in TV ads, it's her most covered song, and it's now the song everyone associates with her and the song non-fans enjoy. It's completely captured this generation as evidenced by it becoming her 19th number one in the US.

As great as Always Be My Baby is, for all the reasons you listed, it never made a lasting impact outside the US. It's never played on the radio (again, other than the US) and it quickly fell out of every non-fan's memory after its initial chart run over 20 years ago.

The only other song of hers that would come close to AIWFCIY is Hero, in terms of signature song status. But why fight it? Sure it may have been a bit overkill this year but I think that was due to the anniversary and the push for number one. I really enjoyed the ride this season, with all the new videos (unreleased footage, St John the Divine, Tokyo Dome HD, and the Make My Wish Come True version), the deluxe edition of the album, the coherent interviews, the brilliant Walkers ad, the concerts, and then the number one. It's been great. I think you might be suffering from AIWFCIY fatigue which is understandable. I still think it is single handedly the best thing she has ever done.

Re: Mariah, Celine and Toni for 2020 (91,986) (91,995) by 123 from USA
I was thinking she was going to ask Toni to sing on After Tonight. It was co produced by David Foster and co written by Diane Warren who Toni has already worked with. I think it could have done well with an resung/restructured r&b remix for the urban stations to cover all markets

Re: Signature song (91,991) (91,993) by cBerr from Canada
I couldn't agree more with your sentiments, but for a different reason. I don't want her legacy to be defined by a "seasonal moment". A song they wheel her out to sing for a few weeks each year like a novelty act. That's why they need to go just as hard for Daydream 2020 and Butterfly 2022 - two eras of her career that could only be described as epic.

Re: Signature song (91,991) (91,992) by Musti from UK
I don't think it is her signature song. I personally tend to forget about Christmas songs until the season arrives. Hero, ABMB and WBT will still be the songs people remember for at least 10 months of the year. But even if AIWFCIY does become her signature, at least it's a song that will resurrect every single year in full force, unlike ABMB and all her other chart toppers which will hardly be more than a backdrop for the next song on the playlist. Let's not be ungrateful for her incomparable success.

Signature song (91,991) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I don't want it to be All I Want. It's annoying the hell out of me now. And it feels gimmicky. To me, it's Always Be My Baby. Everyone knows it. It's the perfect pop song. With the best arrangement. The best vocal. The best melody. The best lyrics. It's pure genius. The signature song. I'll sign it myself.
