Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,732) (91,757) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Well the age analogy wasn't exactly the best because aging is a much more finite thing that is bound to happen anyway. It's actually more akin to holding a certain record or distinction until someone else comes along to replace you. Being #1 is like a mini-record (weekly, to be exact) that you hold until the next one. That's how pageant titles, political terms, and even award show winners work. The current winner is always referred to as the most recent winner until a new winner is announced, even if an entire year has already passed. And as for the Oscars or any huge award-giving body, they don't really associate the award with the year it was given. They don't refer to the edition by the year it was conducted but rather the number of times it has been held (92nd Annual Academy Awards instead of 2020 Oscars, etc.) especially since the actual work they won for was released the year before (or even the year before that for the Grammys). Same goes with #1 songs as explained by Edward but on a weekly basis; it only just gets a little confusing for that special transitional week between years.

Re: Mariah (19 No 1's) and Rihanna (14 No 1's) (91,751) (91,756) by We are Lambily from USA
Rihanna can sing, she is an artist. With 14 #1s something miss Gaga could never achieve. She can stick to doing movies since her music really don't [sic] have the same impact anymore. Rihanna's album is one of the most anticipated albums of 2020. She [sic] been to busy building her empire. She is winning in every front. And she is also one of the most beautiful singers to ever exist.

Your opinion doesn't matter, and if it was Ariana, I wouldn't complain since Billboard itself confirmed that. You [sic] really trying so hard to diminish Mariah's success, she will be on top until 2020, then watch the headlines. Maybe then you will believe.

Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,752) (91,754) by Bill from the UK
I think people are more being factual rather than clutching at straws. Let's not forget this very same thing happened with One Sweet Day. It appeared on both 1995/1996 year end charts, because it was a number one in both years, and it was both the last number one of 1995 and the first number one of 1996.

Wikipedia lists all the number ones of the Hot 100 era, click on 1995 and then 1996 and you'll see One Sweet Day on both lists.

So, as much as you may not like it, this is the fact of the matter and how current chart rulings are applied. If Mariah stays at number one with AIWFCIY, it will be viewed as being across two separate decades. Sorry.

Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,752) (91,753) by Edward from USA
Andrew, the point is not about when the #1 was first reported, but about the position is holding at a certain moment in time. If she's still holding the #1 position in January, then she's still #1 in that decade. I wouldn't consider it the first #1 of that decade though, but a #1 in that decade. It's simple, but let's agree to disagree.

Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,744) (91,752) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Again, respectful disagree. The number one slot recognises completion of the previous week's sales as being the highest seller. The rolling first week of the next year is not the period for which the record has been achieved. Again, respectfully, I think this is clutching at straws. If this was Ariana claiming such a title I think people here would be quick to point out reality to the Arianators.

Plesse not. I can't stand Rihanna. Her music is nothing special. I would prefer Gaga. Or someone who can sing too. Or at least is likeable.

That performance was too cute. This was the first time in a while I rewatched a performance of MC 5 times in a row.

Opinions are cute but the facts are if Mariah has the last #1 of 2019, then she would be the only artist with a #1 in four decades.
Disagree? Call Billboard and complain.

Re: Mariah (19 No 1's) and Rihanna (14 No 1's) (91,746) (91,748) by Dennis from Miami, FL
I hope it will be better than any other diva plus diva collabo. The only good one I can remember is "Sisters are doin' it for themselves". If Mariah duets with Beyonce, B would demand half of the royalties. I hope Mariah never agrees.

You can say the same about its current chart position, which is for "week of December 21, 2019", but that's based on last week's sales and streams.

Mariah (19 No 1's) and Rihanna (14 No 1's) (91,746) by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
I think Mariah and Rihanna should collaborate a song. Imagine two singers who each have the most No 1 singles in a video together. Best formula for No 1. Mariah will get her 20 and Rihanna will get her 15.

Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,743) (91,745) by Bill from the UK
But charts are different. If someone said "what was the last number one of 2019", the answer is Mariah. If, a week later, someone else asks the unrelated question of "what was the first number one of 2020", the answer is Mariah. If a list is compiled tracking all number ones from January 2020 to December 2029, Mariah will be on the list. Equally if a list is compiled tracking all number ones from 2010 to 2019, Mariah is on that list as well.

We love everybody.

Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,743) (91,744) by Musti from UK
Awards relate to certain pre-determined periods of time. Charts are every single week. AIWFCIY would be sitting at the top whether it's a week in 2019, 2020 or any other decade from now on. The only reason why the same song hitting #1 across decades may not seem like a thing is simply because no one had made it a thing, until now.

Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,738) (91,743) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Respectfully disagree. If I win an Oscar in 2019 I am not the winner in 2020 just because the awards are not until February.

Re: Mariah and Britney (91,740) (91,742) by amends from Germany
I feel like Britney won't be "enough" of a draw to catapult a song to #1 anymore unfortunately. I have nothing against her - actually saw her perform once and it was fun.

Either Gaga or someone fresh like Lizzo or Billie eilish would be dope - since Mariah praised Lizzo a few weeks back, that's not too unreasonable right?

Re: Mariah and Britney (91,740) (91,741) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Maybe in the mid 2000s until about 2011 but after that? Nah. Even her surprisingly good Glory album failed to resonate with audiences and that was in 2016.

Mariah and Britney (91,740) by Will from Australia
I just had a thought that if Mariah and Britney teamed up it'd have a good chance of being a hit, I'm just not sure how that would sound. If it went No.1 that would make them the two artists with No.1 in the 90s, 00s, 10s and 20s, assuming AIWFCIY doesn't achieve it.

Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,732) (91,738) by Edward from USA
Not really, a number one holds its position until the next one takes its place, 7 days to be exact. If "AIWFCIY" crosses over to 2020, it would be holding the #1 spot until January 4. It would be considered a #1 in both decades.

I know what you mean but how crazy would it be if Old Town Road only got to fifteen weeks and Mariah still held that record too. If only.

Andrew, when I saw "Home Alone", it was dubbed in Spanish and I didn't even know a word of English. So, even if the song is part of the soundtrack, I don't remember it maybe because I couldn't connect to its melody. Merry Christmas to you too.

Re: Billboard week of 12.28 (91,732) (91,734) by Horacio from United States
According to Billboard, if she stays at #1 for 3 weeks (the last week being the charts dated January 4, 2020), then she will have the record of having a #1 every decade for 4 consecutive decades.

Re: What's our opinion on collabs? (91,723) (91,733) by Bobby A from United States
I just thought about this collaboration that would be loved by all. Darryl "DJ" Camper should get Ne-Yo, Jazmine Sullivan and Mariah in studio for a Ne-Yo and Mariah duet.
