JLo (83,455)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
| |
|
|
Other than her followers she is not more respected, she is only important by what she wears [censored]. Her music is not fearing any better as her last album sold less than MC's. Also she had two of music's most popular artists right now on her latest song and it went nowhere. Her team hawks her to no end and at this point they are doing any everything to see what sticks. She was hot because she came into the mainstream off the back of the Latin explosion and she worked with Murder Inc when they were the it crowd helping to further her hip hop reach. Other than that she is average at best.

Once again... Mariah requires a certain taste while J-Lo is more mainstream. I wonder if her 70 million followers realize what La Lopez concocted with the help of Mottola? Pushing her career by debunking the of another artist. Very down to earth indeed.

Article: Mariah Carey canceled tour to avoid James Packer? (83,452)
by 90sMariah from SG

Cmon. We all know the real reason for the Aus/NZ tour cancellation isn't because of the Australian Shrek, it's due to poor ticket sales. Even her Singapore tour isn't doing so great from the looks of it. Most of the tickets aren't sold out, except for the VIP.

Silence does not particularly mean a more favorable perception. And you are forgetting about the many fans who stopped giving a whole F about Miss M. But go off. This new team is putting bigger, maybe better band-aids in the boo boos that our diva co created. There is still the reckoning to come though. In all of that I do hope Mimi is actually getting therapy. Where could she find the time?

J.Lo and Mariah (83,450)
by Lara from Middle East

J.Lo is loved because she's relatable and down to earth. It has nothing to do with respect. Maria on the other side, because of her Mariah-isms will never reach the love Jennifer is getting (just check their Instagrams, 7 millions vs 70 millions followers) but even the ones mocking her cannot not respect her.

J.Lo is well liked, and it's not hard to see why, I do agree. I also agree that Mariah is mocked, and it's often her own fault. When people refer to J.Lo, I rarely see them refer to her talent. Whereas, with Mariah, despite the voice fading, people still have some respect for what was, especially for that first 10 years of her career. I just don't think like and respect are one and the same, but that's just my opinion. It's fine to disagree, which is also an unpopular opinion on this board lol.

It's an opinion, just because you don't like it, that doesn't make it unfair. If that's the case, you could argue that saying J.Lo has more respect than Mariah is an unfair statement. Mariah has five Grammies, and last time I checked, that was five more than J.Lo. However, I don't think it's unfair to make that claim. I'm merely responding and giving my opinion to that claim. There's nothing unfair about that.

That's because much like Beyoncé, JLo is a perfectionist performer who takes charge and puts a lot of effort in performing. She doesn't half-ass her performances and also doesn't wear just gowns that make her look matronly. Plus, she still looks young and that appeals to the younger crowd. Furthermore, she has a better public image compared to some. She may not be a good singer, but that's alright, because she's a joy to watch and she doesn't look like a heavily medicated couch that needs to be propped and be assisted to move around on stage.

VMA'S (83,446)
by Mara from United States

The homage from JLo to Tommy was interesting. I didn't watch but saw the clips on instagram. Thoughts of Glitter popped in my head. Hoping MC releases something good soon and glad she paid the VMA'S no mind with her pics in the studio. I think we are all thirsty for new MC music. Interesting how Thou that shall not be named has been vacationing at MC's fav places including the "grotto", and then a radar Tanaka story. Such spitefullness. Glad MC is in the Bahamas in a yacht enjoying life with family and friends before the Vegas shows and hopefully the album or single release. She needs to show the Arianna's and Jlowwws who started it all. Please MC and also, please please please why the wait on the Beacon release dates? I would love to plan and have something to look forward to right now. They will sell, please release the Beacon dates.

Image overhaul - is it working? (83,445)
by Marissa from USA

Do you all think the general public is perceiving Mariah more favorably post-Stella/her bipolar admission? In other words, how often are you guys having to defend Mariah to your friends, family and trolls online these days? From what I've seen the difference is noticeable. Every time I go on her Instagram the comments are predominantly nice and encouraging. I haven't heard people trashing her in everyday conversation. I just love this era. She is hardcore in the studio, ignoring Satan - oops - I mean Stella's idle threats, seems happy and grounded, and is spending a lot of time with her kids without distractions. Shoutout to her real (caps) team and everyone at Roc Nation that is actually invested in her reputation and success. Can't wait to hear the new album. She is back into music mode and is not coming to play.

From where I sit, J.Lo is not an artist mocked or laughed at or criticised heavily. She is revered. Especially as the preeminent Latina artist in the world. And she's of passable quality as an actress, arguably. I am not sure where you are coming from. Unfortunately Mariah has overshadowed her music and her musical accomplishments with a seemingly desperate sexuality, a needing girly vanity, a more than irritating interview style, a shady attitude and lipsync and airbrush incidents. She is, at least from where I sit, a rather mocked person. Despite having created a body of work that is unparalleled to this day. So my point was merely about respect that the artist gets. J.Lo seems to get it. Mariah does not. From where I sit.

That's an unfair statement to make. Just because you don't like or respect her, that doesn't mean others feel the same way.

J.Lo may have respect as a celebrity, for an Instagram, Kardashian generation, but make no mistake, Mariah's talent has far more respect than she does. Mariah may not be as relatable to some people, and indeed may not be as liked, but don't confuse being liked for garnering respect. The awards mentioned are not the industry bar for respect, and are token awards, given to someone in this instance, because they'll get likes on Instagram or YouTube. She may be popular, but respected, I'm not sure. She's rarely credited for her actual ability, and more for her dresses, or lack thereof these days.

Well I think there are a lot of artists that can live up to it, but unfortunately they don't get alot of shine because they don't have the image that seems to sell now.

Same here. I feel little to no connection with the current artists. Everything seems to be based on looks and image instead of genuine talent. We are lucky to have experienced an era of great singers. An epic diva duet like "When You Believe" is unimaginable these days. There is not one current songstress that can live up to the classic divas.

Tiji, I have to admit I liked some of her music back in the day too. Her music now isn't kind to my ears, but that's like most of the music released today. Clearly I'm getting old.

I'm far from JLo's biggest fan but credit where it's due. Her performance was incredible, she's pushing 50. It seemed like she sang live at times, commanded the stage and showed the younger generation what a show stopping performance really is. Yeah her voice isn't the best but her commitment and dedication to making a performance worthy shines through. JLo clearly put the effort in.

J-Lo is indeed much more popular with a younger audience because her projected image is molded towards that demograph. I really enjoyed her first endeavours in music but of late her songs have become incredibly tawdry especially since she jumped on the EDM bandwagon. Mariah takes more effort to appreciate if not understand as an artist. J-Lo being the more respected and popular version of Mariah? More like the-cheaper-to-get-Aldi version of Mariah. They can not and should not be compared... ever.

God forbid we give any credit to Jennifer. She had triple the energy of any of the other performers. With that being said, we should have appointed Ashanti as the presenter of the Vanguard on the stage. So she could hand JLo the award right before she hands her an ass-whooping.

MC15's mystery and Zayn (83,434)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
First, why has Zayn's last three singles flopped for his forthcoming album? The album being released this year is not looking good at all. I have been tweeting for him to call in Johnta Austin or Chris Brown for that Pillowtalk hit. Second, I know I can't be the only one saying that out of all MC's last 14 albums, MC15 is the only one where the musical direction and the sound is such a mystery. We have no earthly idea what this album is going to sound like or the musical influences the album will carry. JD really didn't help the mystery by saying Mimi is going for an aggressive sound. I liked the sound of that when I first heard the word aggressive, but what does that actually mean in terms of the album's sound? I don't know how much more I can wait for the big announcement or the first single to drop. I am on pins and needles. Lol. I am glad she is now back in the studio. I just hope the album comes out in time for my Thanksgiving road trip to Chattanooga and Atlanta. Last Thanksgiving week, I blasted Sam Smith's The Thrill Of It All in Nashville all the way to Memphis.

Is she the Mariah that is accessible? She is old school, and kinda popular. She still commands respect. It is hard to make fun of her. The ICON award, the MJV award, the good run on AI... is JLo what Mariah could have been in terms of respect?
