Re: Mariah Carey: Just Be Good To Me (from Japan) (81,080) (81,101) by Licia from USA
Thank you for the simple "dummy's guide to dubbing" explanation. I actually got it. Lol. I think you're the first person to explain it without going into a full Mariah rambling paragraph.

I get your point RJJ12, but you know it is a vicious cycle. Please keep making your other great posts.

The thing is, even the undubbed Tattoo Club performances weren't even that bad. They were a lot better than most decent singers could accomplish. The only major mess up were the backing singers screwing up Someday and the failed upper register ad lib on Don't Play That Song. The undubbed Unplugged also has nothing wrong with it in my opinion. Mariah did say that when she was at Sony they always said everything had to be perfect and she was in the studio all the time re-recording. I assumed the comment was around her albums but must have extended to the live performances as well. I agree with Andrew that The Art Of Letting Go was a great opportunity to put all that behind her and do the best with the talent God gave her, without resorting to all the unnecessary bells and (forgive the pun) whistles.

Sheila hasn't posted in a while and she certainly has stopped the gay comments or been blocked from posting them, but the racist comments of others seem to make it through. All of the petty provocation needs to stop. But, dumb shit breeds dumb shit in response. The cycle goes on and on.

Re: Dubbing, why? (81,089) (81,096) by Andrew from UK
Can't listen to that. If you tell me the Pavarotti performance was dubbed I could not cope with it. As I said, this has always been a downward spiral. But is it broaching absolute truth that almost every performance is a lie? Surely not. Home for the Holidays better be real or I will be seriously pissed off. But, as my friend pointed out to me today, if it was a toss up between being honest and upfront and quite wealthy or being deceitful and mega wealthy, most of us would opt for the latter.

Yes, darling. After all the intellect I have had throw at me on this board, yours is the one that trumps me lmao. I can't debate with teenage girls from ridiculous countries.

"Mariah was so desperate to sound perfect that she created the illusion she was flawless." She simply did sound "perfect". Of course everyone has another taste of what that perfect thing is. For me it's the emotion, the softness of her voice and her "Mariah vocals" that makes MC so special to me. I don't think she was desperate at all. There are a lot of non-dubbed live versions online. The first time I saw her live, I was shocked that she sounded way better than on the cd. But if I listen to the so-praised Rihanna or Taylor Swift, that's what I call "smoke and mirrors". Good entertainers but not great at singing at all. There are non-famous musicians who are so much better than these popstars on the charts.

"#Beautiful" (81,091) by Billy from Greece
If there's one song that should have been Mariah's 19th number one (so far), this is it.

"Sweetheart" (81,090) by Billy from Greece
A teeny-tiny snippet of Mariah singing "Sweetheart" live during the filming of "I Still Believe". This jam has some serious funk in this arrangement. Love it.

Dubbing, why? (81,089) by Edward from USA
Sometimes I don't even know why she would get her performances dubbed since they were great to begin with. In this with Pavarotti she was better undubbed, it doesn't make sense.

Re: Mariah Carey: Just Be Good To Me (from Japan) (81,080) (81,088) by Edward from USA
Bill, I have to say in Mariah's defense that she did more than one take for the MTV Unplugged, they of course copied, pasted and filtered the audio to sound perfect which would considered to be dubbing as well. One thing that really left me flabbergasted was when I heard her raw recording at the Tattoo Club, I posted the whole mini concert once here. They sound nothing like what we get on the tape, of course she must've done different takes. Had Mariah had her boom by 1980, we wouldn't have ever found out, but technology got to her and what she could keep tightly controlled actually has come back to haunt her.

Re: Our minds work differently (81,053) (81,087) by Edward from USA
RJJ12, so if Andrew makes a racist comment, you're going to punish him by blasting the gays, because being gay is an offense and since he's gay or their advocate he would feel offended? I'm sorry but I don't understand that logic. So that means that when Sheila makes derogatory gay comments, the gays should make nasty racist remarks to get back at her because being racist is good? What's next, me making derogatory comments towards B because he just moved to Indiana?

Bullying? Tasted your own medicine finally? See who can't take a joke now. And bored of me? Sounds like things said by someone losing an argument. To quote your own words you once said to me: "Lighten up." "Go back to bed, it's safer there."

Madge's Ray Of Light is 20 years old (81,085) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
Not a Mariah post, but whatever. Happy 20th year of greatness to one of the finest albums of the 90s, Ray Of Light. All electronica tracks that came after this has borrowed a thing or two or more from it. This cemented Madonna's status as the Queen of Reinvention. I still listen to Drowned World, Frozen, The Power of Good-bye and especially the title track to this day. So good.

Re: Mariah Carey: Just Be Good To Me (from Japan) (81,077) (81,084) by Edward from USA
Had Mariah not lipped the National Anthem, it would've been great. It was going well until she "mis-lipped" that part at the end and it was so evident. The recording was great and she looked lovely, but I wish she had done it live like most people before her. But talking about dubbing, since they couldn't actually dub a live performance, she did lip to the best of her ability at that time, and deserves credit for that.

Mariah and Luis Miguel (81,083) by MusicfanJ from Germany
I watched some interviews during the Rainbow era and to see how Mariah was smiling when she was talking about Luis was almost heartbreaking. I really do believe her heart got broken many times. What I like about Luis is that he never said anything "childish" or bad to the press and media. Imagine Mariah writes a lovesong about Bryan, maybe we get some love tunes on the next album. MIAMTEC hasn't got ones.

Re: Mariah Carey: Just Be Good To Me (from Japan) (81,077) (81,082) by Andrew from UK
Bill the smoke and mirrors is the problem of the century. Mariah was so desperate to sound perfect that she created the illusion she was flawless. When her voice got worn she needed to keep up the pretence resorting to more and more desperare measures. I gotta empathise with her a bit because to be known for greatness then to feel that greatness leaving you outwith your control must be really heartbreaking. But people don't want studio engineered vocals lipped on stage, they really just want to hear her sing what she can because she has that special unique tone. I wonder: who are the smoke and mirrors for? They're not for us; we don't want them. It must be for her. When the album title The Art of Letting Go was revealed, I really wondered if it meant she was acceoting of certain realities. I think it would have gone down as the bravest move and be heralded as one of the greatest moment in musical history. Sad that it turned out to be about kitchen windows. Oh well.

That sounds a lot like the "bullying" you claim to despise lol brilliant. Another hypocrithere are far more worthy opponents on here (and who keep the conversation flowing even in periods of Mariah-droughts and don't just pop up to criticise those that do). I'm bored of you now. Back to Mariah.

Re: Mariah Carey: Just Be Good To Me (from Japan) (81,078) (81,080) by Bill from the UK
Haha. Dysfunctional fan base, so true. Essentially any vocal flaws or imperfections are re-recorded after the event and pasted over the original to make the original sound perfect. This example of I'll Be There from Unplugged is a good example.

Mariah and Rosie O'Donnell / My All (81,079) by MusicfanJ from Germany
I've read a few times a lot of people don't like Rosie. But I enjoy every interview with Mariah and Rosie. They are all great and fun. This one really made my day. Mariah is the only person I could watch talking for hours. I love her speaking voice. And she looked like an angel/goddess during Butterfly. As I said many times, her natural beauty is just stunning. Still is.

Bill can you explain what dubbing is? I had never heard about dubbing until I started hanging out around this dysfunctional fanbase (lol). I believe someone tried to explain it before, but I didn't get it.

Re: Mariah Carey: Just Be Good To Me (from Japan) (81,072) (81,077) by Bill from the UK
Dennis you are right. The smoke and mirrors were there really since the beginning. Even the televised performances were dubbed as videos have emerged of the differences. As much as no one will want to hear it, Mariah was marketed and directed/manufactured to be a competitor to Whitney due to her enormous success. She of course always had one up on her around songwriting and producing and her range as well, but her early voice was always very light and airy, with a range, but it was beefed up to be as big as Whitney's with lots of studio engineering and support to bolster them up (Kelly Price's comments, please refer). Performing like that live clearly impacted. You read about Adele taking time off and cancelling tours etc. due to her voice potentially being damaged. Mariah soldiered on and we hear people like P Diddy (or whatever his latest name is) saying she recorded over 50 different takes of Honey so he could use whatever he wanted. I'm sure she did the same for many other songs and remixes.

No one assumes you are gay or straight [because] no one really cares. But we do assume you think using 50 cent words make ones sound smarter and tilting heads by 45 degree makes one looks better.

Make as many as you like haha. I assume that you assume that I am gay and would be offended. But doing so would show that you are a hypocrite. You seem to miss the point a lot so you are wise to avoid debating me. "Blondie"? Since we are labelling hair colour as a perjorative is my response to be "blackie"? Much love.
