That's an unfair statement to make. Just because you don't like or respect her, that doesn't mean others feel the same way.

J.Lo may have respect as a celebrity, for an Instagram, Kardashian generation, but make no mistake, Mariah's talent has far more respect than she does. Mariah may not be as relatable to some people, and indeed may not be as liked, but don't confuse being liked for garnering respect. The awards mentioned are not the industry bar for respect, and are token awards, given to someone in this instance, because they'll get likes on Instagram or YouTube. She may be popular, but respected, I'm not sure. She's rarely credited for her actual ability, and more for her dresses, or lack thereof these days.

Well I think there are a lot of artists that can live up to it, but unfortunately they don't get alot of shine because they don't have the image that seems to sell now.

Same here. I feel little to no connection with the current artists. Everything seems to be based on looks and image instead of genuine talent. We are lucky to have experienced an era of great singers. An epic diva duet like "When You Believe" is unimaginable these days. There is not one current songstress that can live up to the classic divas.

Nope we aren't getting old, the music just sucks. I'm so glad I got to experience great music before the 2000's. Lol.

Tiji, I have to admit I liked some of her music back in the day too. Her music now isn't kind to my ears, but that's like most of the music released today. Clearly I'm getting old.

I'm far from JLo's biggest fan but credit where it's due. Her performance was incredible, she's pushing 50. It seemed like she sang live at times, commanded the stage and showed the younger generation what a show stopping performance really is. Yeah her voice isn't the best but her commitment and dedication to making a performance worthy shines through. JLo clearly put the effort in.

J-Lo is indeed much more popular with a younger audience because her projected image is molded towards that demograph. I really enjoyed her first endeavours in music but of late her songs have become incredibly tawdry especially since she jumped on the EDM bandwagon. Mariah takes more effort to appreciate if not understand as an artist. J-Lo being the more respected and popular version of Mariah? More like the-cheaper-to-get-Aldi version of Mariah. They can not and should not be compared... ever.

God forbid we give any credit to Jennifer. She had triple the energy of any of the other performers. With that being said, we should have appointed Ashanti as the presenter of the Vanguard on the stage. So she could hand JLo the award right before she hands her an ass-whooping.

MC15's mystery and Zayn (83,434)
by Bobby A from United States
| |
|
|
First, why has Zayn's last three singles flopped for his forthcoming album? The album being released this year is not looking good at all. I have been tweeting for him to call in Johnta Austin or Chris Brown for that Pillowtalk hit. Second, I know I can't be the only one saying that out of all MC's last 14 albums, MC15 is the only one where the musical direction and the sound is such a mystery. We have no earthly idea what this album is going to sound like or the musical influences the album will carry. JD really didn't help the mystery by saying Mimi is going for an aggressive sound. I liked the sound of that when I first heard the word aggressive, but what does that actually mean in terms of the album's sound? I don't know how much more I can wait for the big announcement or the first single to drop. I am on pins and needles. Lol. I am glad she is now back in the studio. I just hope the album comes out in time for my Thanksgiving road trip to Chattanooga and Atlanta. Last Thanksgiving week, I blasted Sam Smith's The Thrill Of It All in Nashville all the way to Memphis.

Why am I taking over the choir's vocals? The sh*t sounds terrible and my coworker's are looking at me like I'm crazy, but I'm singing my little heart out.

JLo (83,432)

Is she the Mariah that is accessible? She is old school, and kinda popular. She still commands respect. It is hard to make fun of her. The ICON award, the MJV award, the good run on AI... is JLo what Mariah could have been in terms of respect?

Right. I'm not understanding why J.Lo would be villianized about a song that we all knew that someone else wrote. You can even hear Ashanti on the background vocals. Lol.

Jennifer's performance was... okay-ish. She is an underwhelming singer with little soul or colour in her voice. Her dancing? I have never been a fan of that kind of headshaking-amipossessedbydemons-twerking extravaganza. All I noticed was her mimicking MC's NYE look with that white fur coat and embellished ensemble. All in all the entire performance was one big advert for Versace. And let us not start about that Vanguard Award.

VMA's (83,427)
by Ronnie from California

Well they happened, and they were undoubtedly disappointing. Nicki's performance was lackluster and a mess. She rapped to 3 songs with a backdrop that went along with her Egyptian Queen theme. The arena where she performed was filled with a high energy crowd. Most likely, her audience was a mixture between Barbs and paid re-actors. Other than that? it was decent in comparison to the rest of the performances. It seems as though Nicki is no longer "in", I wonder if she will understand MC's perspective more. Ariana performed "God is a woman" while setting the performance in an all-woman recreation of The Last Supper. There was choreography and some pretty good live vocals. While she normally delivers, Ariana didn't feel present because she was thinking about her choreography. Maybe no one has told her that if she is gonna do choreography she needs to lip sync - does she still think Beyonce sings and dances at the same time? Haha. She ended the performance with a final stance and bow alongside some of her most important women. She was probably the most entertaining that night (for my taste). Jennifer performed her giant ass off. She honestly showed them why the earlier generations of superstars gave it 110%. I have never been a fan of dancing since I don't think that talent is nearly as impressive as an unbelievable voice - Mariah, Whitney, Aretha, etc. But if you are gonna do a dance performance, she is a good standard for how clean it should be. On the red carpet Ashanti said she hoped JLo would perform one of the songs she wrote "for" her. They cut her off because of how messy the situation got back in the early 2000's. Heaven forbid we villainize Jennifer on the night she received the MJ Vanguard Award.
