Re: Mariah for SuperBowl (80,805) (80,829)

Love me some Mariah, but she can barely walk without assistance. People do not want to see someone being carried around, or being held just to take a few steps. As long as Mariah has been in the game, you would think she picked up some moves along the way. She's too worried about posing in the right angle and always looking pretty. I know she's not a dancer, but even Celine and Whitney knew how to properly work a stage. With this said, I'd still see her in concert. I have already seen her 5 times.

I agree, "Can't Let Go" and "Till The End of Time" are sung with such emotion, it's like every word gets delivered straight to one's soul. I know Tommy is mostly hated by the lambs, but I can't imagine Mariah without the type of music she did while under his wing. She might not listen to or like pop music, but when she delivers pop, she shines. "Almost Home" and "One Child" are up to part with any of her 90's music, even better than some. I guess we'll only experience Mariah doing pop on Christmas and soundtrack songs.

Superbowl, really? (80,826)
by Edward from USA
| |

Well, Mariah can't walk two steps without help. Can you imagine her at the Superbowl? The Superbowl is more about bringing an energetic performance, not only the music. Mariah has plenty of songs in her catalog that would go great as part, and I repeat, as part of a great performance, but we all know Mariah is very lazy to commit to anything remotely close to a simple choreography. The Superbowl is not just an "I'm Here" for a soundcheck event. It's a super production in which Mariah would have to be willing to work hard as a team player, not as a diva, and actually rehearse. I think she could definitely pull it off, but she would have to stop her diva ways for that. She would have to actually work out at being flexible, being in shape is not directly related to being flexible. She would have to learn how to walk on whatever shoes she's on. She would have to commit to learning some "Heartbreaker" type of choreography, only with more energy. The production would even bring a real helicopter for Honey, but that along wouldn't do it. Lazy ass movement as if she's constipated wouldn't cut it. Wigs and weaves should have to be attached with crazy glue. It's not an event to just look pretty. Being realistic, I wouldn't like her to even try it. I think it would be career suicide. Singing "America The Beautiful" would be just fine. And for before the Lamb Police jump in, I want to say that I'm not saying Mariah should turn into a Paula Abdul or Beyonce, but she would have to do something other than some lazy as movements. As much as I hate to say it, I think Celine would do better, but I they are not the type of artists for events like these.

Licia you must scroll down the @Mariahdoingthings IG page. Please watch the hilarious video of Mimi gloriously edited into other better dancing divas videos. They even edited Mimi dancing with herself doing her iconic Honey dance at full hip sway swag. I couldn't attach the link from my tablet, but it's worth your time.

Didn't she do a halftime performance during TEOM era? It wasn't the Superbowl (i don't think), but she did a great job though. If I remember correctly one of the songs was SIO. I can't be the only person who remembers this. Lol. Anyway, I don't like the setlist Sheila wants, but I think Mariah would be ok with a Superbowl performance if she just left some of her bad habits in Vegas. You can't half ass perform at an event like that. You have to do the full Honey dance. None of that lifting up every two seconds like your legs don't work bullcrap. (I just know some people will get mad at me for saying that.) Lol.

Thanks RJJ12 for sharing. There are "new" vocals on it. I wonder how they made these stripped down versions. At the end when she sings: "I'm telling you baby. Just wonderful."

Has anyone bought any of the Blue-Spec reissues of some of Mariah's albums (f.i. Butterfly, Rainbow) that have been out in recent years? Is there a difference in sound?

E: I'm sure you noticed similar patterns of colorism once you joined the music industry. MK: Oh, of course. I challenge my students at Texas Southern to think about this. When it comes to black females, who are the people who get their music played on pop radio? Mariah Carey, Rihanna, the female rapper Nicki Minaj, my kids (Beyonce and Solange), and what do they all have in common? E: They're all lighter skinned. MK: Do you think that's an accident?

I like the idea of Mariah for Superbowl. But I think we would be all riddled with anxiety. I think she is also more than capable, but I can't help but feel that the general public fall into two categories: 1. Haven't heard a thing about Mariah and think her last effort was "We Belong Together", and she's since joined the company of Belinda Carlisle and Jewel; or 2. They have been completely off-sided by the last decade of diva slash wanker reputation she's picked up. So whilst I think she could do it, I doubt that at present, the demand is there.

Underneath the Stars Smooth Harmonies (80,814)
by Lee from UK

So I am in love with this version of Underneath the Stars. It is called the Smooth Harmonies version because the background harmonies are emphasised over the lead vocals and it so refreshing to hear them upfront. It is different to the stripped versions floating about but probably made by the same people. Gorgeous.

Thank you RJJ12 for this. I never heard it before and it's like a little gift of new vocals that we would never get now. (No shade MC but it's true since she acts like CLG doesn't exist.) Going to move on but I agree with you that her debut album was about her vocal showcase with VOL and that Emotions the song was as well, but Can't Let Go is the song for me that really set her apart at that time from all the others. It had a feel unlike anything on the radio at the time and her whistle placements blew me away. It almost was hypnotic in a sort of way. I guess I can say although I was a fan since VOL and her Arsenio debut, it was CLG that connected me with her songs and style. Just would love to hear her sing it in its entirety one more time and not the way she chopped it up for the Adventures of Mimi tour. OK, sorry, moving on now.

Mara girl you have no idea how much CLG means to me. I became an official die hard Mariah Carey fan the first time I heard that song. Kicked Janet Jackson straight to the curb. The different melodies, textures, and emotions that you hear in Mariah's voice takes you on a rollercoaster ride of tormented, haunting, painful, yet at times caressing emotions that almost drive you crazy but you find yourself wanting to hear that song over and over again. I was straight addicted to CLG. And that video. What a classic video. Can Mariah bring back that French roll please? I agree, Mariah should pay more attention to this song.

Mimi at the Superbowl (80,810)
by CDC from CA

I think since Mariah isn't a typical half time artist, she would need a whole bunch of pyrotechnics and gimmicks for it to be show-stopping. This is a strictly timed performance so she'll have to leave her cabaret style diva banter at home. So in my head this would be Mariah's Superbowl setlist: Emotions with vocal exercise intro (a la "Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour") Fantasy Touch My Body (Jack McBrayer cameo) Obsessed (somehow integrate a "Mean Girls" reunion with Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried and Rachel McAdams) #Beautiful Heartbreaker remix/album version (Jay-Z appearance) Jay-Z sings his mini setlist We Belong Together condensed version Hero with local choir dedicated to US veterans She then surprises everyone with an iTunes takeover and a new album, sells one hundred million copies first week, is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, wins Nobel Peace Prize, is elected first female President of the United States.

If she stuck with uptempo sings, with maybe a few special guests and then left off with a killer ballad, with great vocals, she could totally pull this off: Dreamlover Fantasy It's Like That Shake It Off Heartbreaker Always be my baby (the sing along part) Honey Make It Happen Then Hero Yes, I'd be so here for this.
