Re: Mariah inspired by Whitney? (78,196) (78,203)

Was it "Someday"? I remember reading back in the day they wanted to offer Whitney "There's got to be a way", and yes Mariah wanted to keep it for herself.

Never thought that this simply summer song would be on number one for so long too. I think since they had Justin Bieber on the remix the song got played even more. I don't care that "Desoacito" has success. It's just a one-hit wonder. And I can't hear it on the radio anymore. It's so annoying. But yes the people [seem] to need a happy song that brings sunshine to their lives.

Slightly is an understatement. It really is a wondrous thing that confuses, wait - baffles, no - floors me to this day. There are so many other Latin-influenced tracks that have had significantly less success, but for some reason, this lucky collaboration hit the jackpot in terms of the right timing, artists, audience and sound (with a huge emphasis on timing and audience). I guess the most impressive thing about its success is that it was unexpected. Attempts to keep it on top only began to reek of calculation after its second month at #1. It gave a new meaning to "crossover appeal". Not even it being currently on promo would ever make me purchase it, though.

How anybody can tolerate the same bloody song, any bloody song, being everywhere for four months is beyond me, Mariah or otherwise. Despacito is the song of the Summer, undoubtedly. But who the hell are the muppets still buying it? It's been everywhere for four months. Why the bloody hell are you only purchasing it now?

Slightly shocked at Despacito (78,199)
by Nikki from usa

I wasn't really expecting this track to last this long and I didn't start looking at [its] stats until it hit [its] 14th week. I just assumed this was a major hit from 3 different fan bases fueling it. Which would make [its] ruling inevitable. But, that didn't turn out to be true. Don't get me wrong, it's a huge hit. However, at 14 weeks it had finished peaking the week prior and was actually tumbling down all the charts. Very slowly, but still falling. They discounted their single for 69 cents to keep their sales up for week 15. Even so, their sales still took a dip. So, they released a remix of it with Justin for sale and also sold it for 69 cents to keep [its] sales up to hit 16 weeks. Apparently, Riri had discounted her single to that much too, so it's a cross between not wanting her to overthrow them and trying to hang on to chase Mariah. I wonder what Mariah's stats would be for streaming if it had been available during the 90's? It's also ironic that the [natives] who created One Sweet Day are sharing the title of longest running #1 with foreigners. It took a Canadian and two Puerto Ricans to catch them using Mariah's hip-pop formula no less.

Mariah's new album (78,198)
by Nikki from usa

I found an interview with JD from earlier this year talking about Mariah's new album. He said they've made a lot of records for it and he's trying to get her to do music that doesn't sound like "Mariah Carey". He talked about a possible collab between her and Bryson Tiller. Also, no EDM included.

Mariah's movie based off her book is labeled as a "home entertainment release". So, it's not going to theaters, but "The Star" is. Unlike the '90's where a movie theme was almost a guarenteed hit, that just doesn't apply anymore. Mariah's theme song for Oz didn't go very far and it was entirely handled by Disney's studios. Personally, I'm thinking Mariah's movie is just going to be another vehicle for AIWFCIY. "The Star" is going to get her name out there. She got all the way up to #11 in 2015 with a kid's book and a lipstick. She's getting even more media involved with her name everywhere this year including concerts in Vegas and New York. I think what she's really doing is gunning for that #1 spot this Christmas season.

Mariah inspired by Whitney? (78,196)
by Nikki from usa
| |
|
|
I don't see how that's possible. Mariah was signed to a record deal 3 years after Whitney's debut. Mariah and Whitney were both inspired by Aretha. Whitney's label, Arista Records, turned down Mariah for a record deal for sounding "too much" like Whitney. Ironically, they still liked her song "Someday" and volunteered to buy it from her to give to Whitney to sing. It's a good thing Mariah turned them down. But, for added irony Mottola used Whitney's producers for Mariah's debut so there's a reason there are similarities for their sound right down to the fact a Mariah original was up for consideration for Whitney to sing.

I actually appreciate the fact they'll do fact checking and get someone from the actual artists' camp to make a statement. The sheer fact Mariah wearing a ring on her middle finger is a subliminal message to an ex who lives on another continent around the world is an actual story is proof there's not much real news these days. Who would care? Who would be retarded enough to buy that? Mariah's as subtle as a bulldozer and upfront with her "shade". Her wearing it on her middle finger front and center while flicking off the camera in "I Don't" is self explanatory. She "said" her piece. However, since then, she's simply wearing it while it's been rotated between her middle, index, and thumb with other days where she doesn't wear it at all. I could show you 10 pictures from the past 3 months where she's only wearing her Butterfly ring. There's no story here.

The animated movie is going straight to DVD. It's a real shame because with its concept and with the right people behind it, I could see the it doing well on the big screen. At the very least it would've been cool for it to have a tv premiere.

It's kind of amusing, though. They're called Gossip Cop but are downright lying. So, now need new gossip cops to debunk Gossip Cop.

We heard that you do have two Christmas films coming out. Can you talk about the other one? "Yeah, there's two, because one is for Universal Pictures Animation. I did a book called All I Want for Christmas Is You, so it's an animated version of the book, you know? There's a new song that I wrote for that, and the other one is for The Star. I'm very excited about that because it's a big movie." I blame this messiness on Stella and Mariah's team. Why take on writing the theme to an animated Christmas movie when you've been working on one and have written a new song for it. Is Mariah's AIWFCIY going to be released in theaters or on television? Are both songs going to be released simultaneously or a week or two apart? What is going on?

15th studio album (78,188)
by Butterfly from

"I can't give too much away," she said. "I hope to work with French Montana on this album. He's one of my favorite people to work with. I also hope to work with Travis Scott and I'd love to work with Kendrick Lamar too." Who doesn't love Kendrick? French no thank you. Travis Scott no thank you. Kendrick no thank you. I remember La Reid told her enough rappers during the making of TEOM. N.O.R.E was supposed to be on "Your Girl". Unforgettable is an amazing song because of Swae Lee's powerful hook and they sounded super dope on the remix. I liked what Mariah did on the remix (lyrics, vocals, freshness). I would love for Mariah to work with Swae Lee, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars. I want something out of the box. Let's change it up, Mariah.

Gossip Cop and their debunked stories are dumber than the stories they purport to debunk. Mimi has been sewn countless times with that dumb ring on her middle finger and regularly with the hired hand. She probably is being petty about it, but the general public doesn't give a hoot about it.

You are absolutely right about Whitney and Mariah. That is what got me into singing as well too. There voices are gifts from God. In my opinion I have not heard anything or anyone that can match them, they are so talented. I studied them I was so desperately trying to be like my idols. The two of them together taught a generation how to sing, from Christina, Ariana Grande, Beyonce Adele and so forth. Mariah and Whitney Houston [were] everything to me when I was growing up. I didn't think there was anything like them. I too grew up wanting to be like the great Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.

Mariah/Whitney (78,180)
by Mara from United States
| |
|
|
So I don't know if anyone here watched the Whitney special on Showtime this weekend, but I did and it was OK. They made it seem like Whitney would still be alive today if she was able to be herself and love who she wanted to love. It went into her love life and how they didn't want certain people around her, how controlling her mother was, how the record label wanted her to be "more pop" more appealing to all audiences and not as "black sounding". She finally wanted to change things when she released I'm Your Baby Tonight. Being a fan originally of Whitney, it was interesting yet very sad. It also got me to revisit a lot of Whitney's music and the album Whitney, which I still love to this day. Songs like , Where You Are, Just The Lonely, For The Love of You. The sound of her voice in those songs still takes me away. I can't help but hear a lot of similarity to the debut Mariah as Whitney had to have influenced MC. I still remember the somewhat rivalry in the beginning of MC's career, especially at award shows when Whitney was sitting in the audience with Bobby and members of New Eddition and they announced Mariah's name. Of course they have long since came together and became friends, but I often wonder why Mariah didn't say Whitney as an influence as much as she did Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, when clearly you can hear the similar singing style. I suppose it's because Mariah's early influence probably was those people as Whitney was mid 80's. Perhaps, it was MC's record label that wanted her to sound more Whitney like and the more records she released she steered further away from that sound. Could be that Whitney was looked at as her competition and she wasn't in control of her original sound, much like Whitney and therefore wasn't happy with certain material. So many interviews of MC she can be heard saying that when someone is new, they always have to compare them to someone on the music scene, hence Whitney. I just can hear a lot of Whitney's formula on MC's debut even with the rock/guitar sound on You Need Me and So Emotional. Tommy used the same formula to get himself his own version of Whitney. Although his version was so much more, as she wrote and produced her own music and had so many layers to her voice. I'll always love them both as Whitney was who got me into singing, but Mariah will always be my girl. I connected with her on so many levels. Thank God they recorded their duet when they did. They will forever be the voices who changed it all.
