Re: Charmbracelet on replay - The one? (71,483) (71,485) by Edouard from France
Charmbracelet is a great album. I get some of the things said about her way of singing. I think she tried a diffrent sound and approach. Remember that at the time people were not into big vocals, they were more into rock and hiphop with light vocals. the same hiphop era that MC helped pave the way for. I think her voice works very well for Subtle Invitation and Lullaby (hence the title). My fav in order are:
- Subtle Invitation
- TTR (always, such an important message)
- The One
- Yours
- Lullaby
- My Saving Grace
- Clown
- You had your chance
I love, love, love the fact that on Lullaby there is only 1 note towards the end were she actually "raises" her voice. On the last "no-body holds a candle to you and I". It makes it even more powerful/impactful.

Re: Trump (71,476) (71,484) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
The way it seems, Stella would have considered it had Team Trump called them. Maybe at that point Mariah would be like "hell no" but Stella would definitely have considered and this is based on the interview she gave where she was asked would Mariah consider performing there and Stella said "we didn't get any calls" instead of "no, she wouldn't" or a more diplomatic "Mariah's plate if full, she doesn't really have any more space for taking new appointments".

"The One" is definitely one of the best songs on that album. I love both the main and the remix version. It should have been the single instead of "Boy".

Re: Charmbracelet - Through the Rain vocals (71,478) (71,482) by Terna from Nigeria
True, regardless it's still my favorite song and Charmbracelet's core. And I play it ever so often just not the whole album. And I would say it's also a classic now. So many people know that song especially the younger generation, even if they don't know who sang it.

Re: Charmbracelet (71,473) (71,481) by Terna from Nigeria
I understand exactly where you're coming from especially about the vocals on "Through the rain". I noticed immediately that it was recorded without any reverb thus making it sound thin (for lack of a better term). And vocally Charmbracelet was missing her chest/mixed voice. She's either "whispering" or "shouting". No inbetweens. Those were some frustrating days to be a Lamb. But then there came "The Emancipation Of Mimi". Wow, by "We Belong Together" even before the powerful phrasing and final belt, I suddenly exclaimed "she's singing again". Haha and that was just the second track. By "Mine Again" everyone in the room just went "Jesus". Lol.

I find it refreshing too. I love the sound of "Lullaby". "Yours" and "I only wanted" are amazing. And I love the "mean" Mariah on Clown, the lyrics and the guitar are just perfect. It has something for everybody. I even like the rapper on this album. "Subtle invitation" with this jazzy tone, I was so surprised. And I'm still in love with "Bringin' on the heartbreak". What a great cover from Mariah. Rock-pop suits her. Charmbracelet is so underrated. It's a piece of art. And the more you listen to it, the more it grows on you. "Trough the rain" and "My saving grace" are so emotional, that I had tears from the first listening back in the day. So I'll stop with the praising.

Seems like we all finally agree. The One is the standout?

Re: Charmbracelet - Through the Rain vocals (71,478) by Sheila from United States
If she didn't whisper in that low tone in the beginning it would be perfect. You have to admit when she hits that bridge and she goes into full voice its like God opened a door and that voice just shines. The One remixes are incredible one of my friends loves one of those mixes.

Re: Ty, Charm-girl (71,471) (71,477) by Licia from USA
I've always understood why the fans didn't initially give CB a chance. That was the first album that hit me lyrically so I never really paid much attention to the whispery vocals. The only time I really paid attention to the vocals is when I heard The One Remix. It doesn't even sound like her on most of the song. Anyway I try not to be so bitter when people talk about my beloved CB and be open minded on their opinions because most people can't understand why I'm not in love with the Butterfly or Music Box albums. Lol.

Last week? Really? Yeah, that really is a shame. Just kidding. There Goes My Heart is one of those songs that are, from first listen, you just know they're never gonna make the final tracklist. It's light and breezy, something that's quite rare in Mariah's catalog. It transports you to a sunny beach, with you running on the sand or swinging on a hammock. Not all songs should hit hard lyrically. Sometimes it's okay to get a bit lazy and create songs this fun and carefree.

Trump (71,474) by Danny from Uk
Actually surprised Stella hasn't tried to book Mariah at Trump's inauguration. Empowering each other and empowering women and single moms and women and each other and empowering themselves. They could have done all that.

The best from CB is The One. The live version from STTR is in my permanent playlist. The rest of the album are just okay but in this few days Clown is my jam. Don't know why, just love it. The shade is just pow. As for TTR, I remember how frustrated I was when I heard it for the very first time, the vocal is no Hero but the video is one of her best. The remix with Kelly and Joe is superb. One thing that I agree during this era is her image - she looked gorgeous. The funny thing is, although CB is not in my top 5 MC albums, I end up buyinh 2 copies of it just to show my support. I felt that she needed her lambs after all the Glitter fiasco.

Re: Ty, Charm-girl (71,470) (71,471) by Edward from USA
Licia, the "problem" with Charmbracelet was that, after Glitter, people were expecting her to deliver a spectacular album with vocals that could remind people she still had "The Voice". Instead we got an album sung almost in its entirety with her whisper register. Back then, Mariah's fan-base was a force to be reckoned with, so most of us didn't like the overuse of the whisper register. Even though I've always thought her whisper register is beautiful in the right doses, after listening to a few of the songs, Mariah started sounding to me as if she had a severe case of constipation, and I eventually lost interest in the album. The album is introspective a la "Butterfly", but no matter how hard Mariah tried to connect the feel of the two albums, the excessive whisper sealed its fate. The album grew on me through the years. Some of my friends would ask me: "Edward, why is Charmbracelet so underrated? We love it." And these were casual fans. That prompted me to give the album another chance, and my perception of opinion changed as I focused not only on the way she sung the songs, but on the lyrics too. As of today, I would take Charmbracelet over "Memoirs" and "MIAM" any day. That might change tomorrow though. Lol.

Wow, thank you so much for that. I had no idea about it. Unfortunately, apart from the cover of the magazine, none of the other scans could be retrieved. With other magazines it works, though. I just need to have the specific ones, their page numbers and publication details for citation purposes. So close.

Talking about Charmbracelet I shamefully only just found out about There Goes My Heart last week and can't stop listening to it. I love this album, for me it really standouts. To be honest the whole era did. Mariah really pushed herself to the limits and stopped caring about what people thought of her. That's what I miss, the Mariah that isn't afraid to get messy hair on stage and flip it from side to side like she did while on tour lol. She looked amazing during this era. Like a new found confidence radiated from her.

Might have to get on board with this Charmbracelet loving and put it on this morning. I listened to E=MC2 yesterday for the first time in years and I have new found respect for IBLYLT. Charmbracelet was/is a great album, "Bringing on the Heartbreak" is one of my favourite MC songs ever. (Yes I know it's a cover.) It's easy to forget that Mariah is actually a singer songwriter with a catalogue of incredible music, not just a scantily clad, pot-buying, binge drinking reality TV personality that's dating a child whilst having earpiece dramas. Good one Stella. You've really f*cked that one up you dopey mole.

Charmbracelet does sound very refreshing. I've been listening to Charmbracelet quite a bit recently and yesterday I caught myself thinking that "Clown" actually sounds like it could work on the radio in the present day. Anyone else think that, or am I crazy? Of course my faves on that album are The One, My Saving Grace, Subtle Invitation, I Only Wanted and Clown, of course. I quite like Charmbracelet. So thankful that MC has such a vast collection of albums and songs.

Does anyone have the scans from the actual magazines from Mariah's cover stories in Essence (2005) and America (2005)? And is anyone willing to send them to me via email? Mariahdaily used to have all the scans but the site has been defunct for a while. Thanks.

Charmbracelet (71,462) by Terna from Nigeria
It's my least favorite Mariah Carey album. Sorry guys but something's off about the vocals, and what's a Mariah Carey album without stellar vocals? It sounds like she's singing under water or suffocating, her bellowing resonating belt is totally non existent, her ease of singing replaced with difficulty (Yours), her main chest voice only makes an appearance on TTR, MSG, TTR reprise and maybe The One. The rest is struggle vocals (Have you heard the full 5 minute version of "You got me"? Horrendous.) and tired borderline irritable whispering.
