We don't know what Mariah is or isn't doing at the moment to prepare for Vegas. She may have a bunch of yes men around her but she knows what is going on, she may be a lot of things but stupid isn't one of them.

I completely agree with you. Some fans are always displeased with something and always wants her to do something for them. When she does what's best for her, they become impatient with her and mad at us for not agreeing with them. Then they try to turn the bull**** they're always talking into logical comparisons. It's always, "we don't care what Mariah thinks she needs and we are going to shove our feelings towards her down everyone's throats when she makes a mistake". It's a double standard and it's heartless to say to someone "you suck, you need to do this and if you don't do what we say, you will be treated like you still suck. " It's cold and not constructive at all. I love some people's critism here because it's constructive, makes sense, and it's level minded. The ones that try to argue their beliefs with conviction as fact are the ones who really bother me. They attack those who have a nice personality and say they are "enablers". That's the reason why I don't comment on this forum, much. I am too understanding of human emotions and I try to not associate myself with those that disregard how someone feels. Abraham, you're awesome though.

Yes you are absolutely right. It's been so long since I heard that interview. Wasn't a really good interview. Wendy asked all the questions everyone wanted to know and Mariah was quite candid and handled Wendy well. It's too bad they pulled it from YouTube.

Disenchanted / Breakfast Club interview (50,464)
by 123 from USA

If Mariah appeared disinterested and blase during that interview is because she was fighting with Nick, her label, and isn't really a morning person. Do you all remember the video footage playing in the background of her BET Honors performance of You're Mine? That was supposed to be part of the original video but Nick was jealous of Mariah having a handsome male lead. He even randomly appeared at the video shoot the day Trey Songz was shooting his part. You notice they never have a scene together. Everything was going wrong in her personal and professional life. It makes sense that during that era, she seemed like she either wasn't interested or not taking the interview seriously. I believe she used the splashes to help her cope and forget about her issues. I believe she will get through this and deliver again.

Celine / Mariah (50,463)
by Abraham from USA
| |

|
"There's nothing really bad you can say about her." Uh, yes you can. She hasn't had a good successful album since "Let's talk about love". Doesn't write her own material. Her music is boring. And hasn't had a hit since when? (Someone let me know lol.) Mariah has always been a better singer and artist than Celine. Talented too. Mariah can have a hit song. Celine has a great voice. But Mariah is above her. Hell Mariah is above almost every female artist in history. With the exception of Diana Ross. Stop losing faith in her. Vegas could work. It's not a permanent gig. She'll have some new music one day. Some here are acting like it's the end for her.

I think MC looked amazing and so sexy in DFAU. If I was given a choice to recreate her videos, I would have such a hard time choosing between Honey, Heartbreaker, Breakdown, and the TEOM videos. She had such great videos and she looked great in all of them.

What's going on (50,458)
by Abraham from USA
| |

I'm very annoyed, and disappointed with the board. It seems like everyone's bashing Mariah and wanting answers. Mariah doesn't have to answer to anyone. And bringing up "The breakfast club" interview? People are just now commenting on it now, then when it first came out. I happen to enjoy it. She didn't ramble as someone stated. Who cares about her dissing Ariana and Nicki? Mariah had every right to be offended with the comparisons. A chick who has an average (nasal) voice. That doesn't write, produce or compose Jack. Isn't a vocalist or a belter. I'd be offended too. She wished her wanna be a** the best and longevity. Nicki is a non factor. No talent, nada. Hella getto and disrespectful. It seems people are turning against Mariah. And why? For not being in the public eye or giving the fans a little something. Uh no. Mariah can find herself and be with her children. She needs to put her kids and herself first. Stop thinking about her 24/7.

Vegas (50,457)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter

I was never a fan of that idea. If MC decided to work instead of taking a break, I would have preferred her coming out with a new album and promoting it to the extreme and reconnecting with her fans. Getting an image makeover and basically prepare for a second comeback. I will be happy for her if Vegas works out for her but I fear it will cause more strain on her already fragile voice. I agree with people who said they would prefer that she leaves the old catalogue behind for a while, with the exception of some upbeat songs which blends in perfectly with the current music scene. I would also like for her to sing songs she usually doesn't. Vegas is a huge commitment. All eyes will be on her and she'll be judged harshly and I don't know if she is ready for that now. I would have preferred her working to get her throne back on her 25th anniversary, going on talk shows, letting people see her fun, creative side. With Vegas taking such a huge chunk away I don't know if she will be able to participate in promotions and being seen.

For the ones complaining about her doing VOL for the millionth time, really? I may be wrong but didn't she just recently start singing that song again? When was the last time she sung VOL before the Elusive tour? I'm thinking '06 but I could be wrong. I know we want M to change it up and I hope she does but I think people want to hear the hits. It's like you would go see Celine to see her perform you know the song. Lambs on the other hand would die if she performs I don't know, Melt Away or Prisoner.

The categories of lambs (50,455)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
Someone broke down what he thinks are the different kind of lambs. basically calling out people who have the audacity to question Mariah. Apparently that means the person is arrogant and impatient. I would call out the fans who are always smothering Mariah with praises no matter what. You are the reason her career is in this state. I would rather be the type of friend who tells her friend to make necessary changes instead of putting a blindfold on and letting her get ridiculed by the entire world. It's good to be supportive, I will support Mariah always, but it's foolosh to turn the other way everytime she makes a mistake. She is human, she will make mistakes but how will she fix it If nobody helps her see the reality? You think it's best to keep telling MC she will be just fine when she is clearly lost? No, it's not fine, you are just pushing her down the cliff. MC was just fine before, it's people like you all and the "yes men" around her that has ruined her, that has made her feel like she can do no wrong. I hate that every 2 days a new person will come up with the same "true lambs vs fair weather lambs" post. It's tiring and old, just like ramblings at interviews, so please take several seats and get your priorities right. If you love MC truly, you would tell her the truth and help her see her mistakes so she can work on it. Don't sit and says she'll change when she wants to. She's 45, she won't keep getting opportunites all the time especially when she missed so many.

Re: Red carpet appearances (50,454)
by Lee TS from USA
| |
|
|
I remembered it differently when Wendy Williams asked Mariah about red carpets. I do remember Mariah saying that it was bad lighting and you get bad pictures. She seriously said that. And Mariah mentioned about a secret Oscar party she attended where Clint Eastwood and Oprah were part of and she wasn't suppose to talk about it. When Nick was on Howard Stern's show, they talked about how Nick and M had dinner at Howard's home with his wife. And according to Nick, Beyonce and M texts each other constantly and M has claimed Beyonce as a personal friend. My point is, maybe M is one of those type of celebrity who's just private. And about Celine, there's really nothing bad you can say about her. She's a professional and I think she's been touring for like ever. Mariah has never been a touring act. It would be cute if Mariah hits up Celine for tips and advice for Vegas and have their kids play together haha.

Mariah's stage performance versus Celine (50,453)
by Seth M from South Africa
| |
|
|
I agree with what you guys are saying about Celine. She is certainly commanding and a perfectionist on stage. Not only that, but if you look at her "Live in Las Vegas" shows, one cannot be more satisfied as the production, props and background dancers are beautiful and professional. The same applies to Sarah Brightman. If you google Sarah Brightman "Live in Las Vegas", you will see how remarkable and technically perfect she is and her production and background dancers are also very appealing on stage. That is how a Las Vegas show be, and I hope that Mariah benchmarks according to those standards. Mariah is still my favorite but it saddens me when I see her stage performance that lack props and the background dancers look like thugs and come across as unprofessional. I am only saying this because I love Mariah and want the best for her, so I really hope Mariah references the production of other Las Vegas shows to give us and the general public something remarkable and different, losing the crappy background dancers that she uses that "makes her not look good".

Cashing in (50,451)
by Jon from Netherlands
| |
|
|
It truly looks like she is only doing it for the money these days. And yes: how can she sing VOL for the milionth time? This Vegas idea is terrible. It's just more of the same. The songs she normally doesn't do will probably be thrown together in a medley and she'll stick to the ones she normally does. I love Honey and TMB but would never care to watch her perform it live. She is cashing in from her name big time and it won't last. A good career move would be to stop singing certain songs. Most of the 90's catalogue should go out the window. If you start from that point you can struggle to reinvent yourself and put on a good show. She needs that struggle. And where the hell are the new arrangements everybody keeps asking for? Is it so difficult to reinvent the songs or is it too much work? The other day I was imagining a jazz version of FLAB. I think it could be great. What about Mine Again? Has she ever sung "100%" live? It's a beautiful song that fits her current voice. The shows she puts on are rehashed and a waste of her catalogue.

Mariah has definitely not grown. Can you imagine how big her fanbase would be if she had evolved as a person? All the fans from the 90's would still be there for her. Mariah was and still is a huge influence in my life and I looked up to her more than to anyone else. I related to so many things: the fact she was a prisioner in her own house (during her first marriage), the need to break free, the will to fight and believe in yourself (CTTA, TTR, etc.). So many of her quotes were stuck in my head. I always remember from the Butterly era: "In life you make your own choices, nobody holds a gun to your head." Now, I wanted to grow with her. But she is stuck. Me with my 29 years am way more mature than her. At this point she doesn't connect with teenagers nor with more mature people like the ones in this forum. She doesn't have conflicts that make her grow as a human being. Nor do most celebrities. For example, if you can afford plastic surgery you never confront the fact that you are ageing and never truly feel comfortable in your own skin. It's all sad and life lessons like that are lost. Mariah is an extreme case though. I think a lot of us are coming out of a "delusional state". I find that great and really mature. It's not ok to idolize someone no matter what. "Cult of personality" has no place in a healthy society.

My All (50,449)
by 123 from USA
| |
|
|
Loving that this song has become a topic on the board. It's the ballad I most often go to when it comes to her discography. Her soft vocals fit the song as her vocals continue to build with each chorus until she goes all out. Its predecessors such as After Tonight and I Only Wanted were nice, but lacked the magic My All has. Speaking of My All, there are two male singers that I've witnessed perform great covers of this song. One is from Afgan, I don't know him but I love how he starts off the second verse. I love Alex Serra's cover as well, he changed the arrangement and I loved it. It's funny because it seems that male vocalists do a better job interpreting her songs then female singers since they usually try to mimic her every phrase and fail. Please watch and let me know what you think.

Red carpet appearances (50,448)
by 123 from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah already addressed this on a Wendy Williams interview in 2003. Wendy told her that she noticed that Mariah purposely isn't on every carpet. Mariah had said something to the effect that she isn't interested in making an appearance at every event. I agree with her thought process because if you do not have anything to promote, then why are you there other than to get into the magazines for what you are wearing? It doesn't benefit her at this point until it's time to promote the next project.

Otti, videos as album promoters (50,447)
by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
| |
|
|
The Butterfly videos are always gonna be my favourites as as well. She was just bursting with creativity on all fronts during that era. I wish she'd do more videos like that, where she can really display her ability to emote and tell a story. I'm not giving up on MIAMTEC getting more videos than YM, which was such a strange choice for first single, you just know it was the label's decision. If she's gonna release a #1's again, why not promote MIAMTEC by including videos as a bonus? Wasn't there talk, just a few months back, of Thirsty and YDKWTD being filmed? That's the whole purpose of videos: to promote the single and in turn whatever album the song is on. But I get that the MIAMTEC is caught between a rock and a hard place with all the things that have transpired in Mariah life both personally and professionally this last year that continue to conspire against its success. Maybe we'll at least get concert videos at some point. She used to be famous for those, remember?

Promoting on TV shows (50,446)
by Will from England
| |
|
|
My impression was that you had to be invited/asked to be on the TV shows. When you're a hot item that viewers would want to tune into the show to actually see them. Mariah is not a hot item at the moment. If she had had a hit with MIAM, I'm almost certain that shows would be lining her up. Whether she's agree to be on them is another matter. All she has to offer really is Vegas, and nothing much else to talk about. And even if she did want to talk about, I doubt she would reveal much about it, except maybe her disdain for singing songs she has never liked. She has already done this on Ellen. Why waste a TV segment on someone in all honesty does not have much to talk about? She won't talk about Idol, she won't talk about the divorce, I doubt she will talk about her children, she barely talks about anything else.

Adam / Mariah and Celine (50,444)
by Will from England
| |
|
|
Whenever I see any documentary on Celine and Vegas, it has never been more clear to me how different Celine and Mariah are, in terms of personality. Celine has always remained humble and loving, and is also keenly aware of how to care for her voice in terms of using saline solutions and using a vocal coach still (as we have seen from a video below). She (Celine) has always kept people who keep her grounded, close to her. She also is more funny, relatable and more interactive than Mariah by lightyears. Mariah, not so much. Once upon a time, all it took was just some vocal rest, lemon and honey and she would be fine. She has never had any vocal training/used a vocal training. Yes, she had her mother for a while, but she needs a new professional who will take no nonsense from her, and make her do exercises. Side note: do you think if Patricia said something to Mariah, Mariah would listen to her? What I think Mariah is trying to do, is to create an illusion around herself as being mysterious, but it is not working. If you ask me, I think Celine can have the title of "diva", without being difficult. Mariah consistently passes the blame to lateness to the people around her, and barely takes responsibility for being late. Remember her appearance on Ellen just after she married Nick, about that joke about "As a 12 year-old, how am I expected to get it together?" She may be in control of her life, but she's made more, and more wrong choices so far. Another main difference between Mariah and Celine, is that one actually listens to the people around her. Remember, no matter what people say about MHWGO, Celine did not want to do it, and look what it did for her. Mariah's risks about going against what is advised, worked to an extent (Honey, Fantasy, Dreamlover) but now she needs to listen to more people about what could potentially work. Performance wise, Mariah and Celine differ again. Celine is a performer. She picks costumes that are flattering and are stage friendly. Also (if you see the video that Adam linked to), she actually makes a point to change quickly and keep the show going. Mariah tends to disappear backstage for periods of time to change into inappropriate gowns that are certainly not stage friendly. She picks out the clothes that look more good on her, than are more practical. Remember in TAOM documentary, that she was lamenting that she was not allowed to change after ABMB and they went straight into Honey? She said something along the lines "I think the audience appreciated we kept the show going." When she was in Zimbabwe, or wherever it was, when she left the stage, there was just nothing and the momentum was lost. Celine's shows at least has something between costume changes to mask the amount of time it takes between Celine leaving the stage, and re-entering the stage. It's all timed for her and it's clear that it is a well oiled machine. Everyone know what to do. Mariah's again seems haphazard.

Thanks for the YouTube recommendation. I've never seen this before and loved it actually. I've always liked Celine's music and her personality throughout the years. She really is the prime example of someone whose had success all her life from a young age and grew up very poor but has always remained humble and a beautiful person. Mariah and Celine have the same amount of accolades and struggles however watching the special made me love her more but also like you mentioned sad for MC. I don't think Mariah has the same discipline about her voice and standards for a live show. I've seen her perform several times in concerts for different albums and I can't say that any one time I've felt the show was polished enough or up to a standard I felt was proud. I think she purposely hires a team of friends and "yes" entourage so I don't expect Vegas to be a different affair. It will be the same Ray Ray two step dance moves and Trey and Maryann singing the same tired background hooks. Such a great talent but again no motivation to want to do better. I wish Tommy Mottola was still an influence in her career because she's could still thrive in the sad landscape of the current state of the music industry. But again she has to want to succeed, not just take the money and run like she has done in the past again (dictators) and again (Virgin) and again (American Idol).
