I agree with you. Mariah needs a fresh sound. I also love to hear more party songs from Mariah like ILT. She needs to be heard at clubs, sing songs at concerts that people can dance to. I know ballads are signature Mariah and I am not telling her to drop it. I wish she would work with Bruno Mars or Taylor Swift or others one would never expect her to collaborate with. Like maybe even Robin Thicke. I am longing for the day when the social media and the world will blow up again with news about Mariah coming back with a bang. I want to see Mariah trending for being the legend that she is instead of her being in the news for latest mess ups are going viral. I understand she is human and she is going through a tough time and in that case I think she should take a break and come back when she feels good and confident. But if she chooses to keep working she needs to deliver on it. Because at the end of the day it's her legacy and she has to protect it.

Old hits with new flavor / the power of the Super Bowl (49,776) by Marcus from Brazil
I don't think Mariah would invest her time re-recording her difficult songs to adjust them to her vocal current range, she would take that as admitting defeat. I think she should record new songs without those difficult bells and whistles and start singing them in concert. I know we want to hear a couple of her biggest hits, but a tour should focused on promoting new music. It is time for Mariah to regroup, surround herself with a good and caring team, work with some big names, and come back to Vegas with a good plan. Missy Elliot has placed three songs on iTunes top 10 ever since her Super Bowl performance. Two from 2001 and one from 2005, she's been selling as if those singles just were recently released. It makes me happy that her music is being exposed to a new generation as if it were fresh.

It's not the end (49,775) by Otti from Belgium
Some fans are really overreacting. Saying things like Mariah is living a lie. This Mariah has recorded at least 13 studio albums in a time span of 25 years. She did many incredible performance over the years. And still people don't get it, she is human, she has ups and downs. We all know if she is in a good place, then she is on point with everything. Look when she released the single #Beautiful, the video was great, the song was great, she did her promo work. But once the stress kicks in, she lost it. We need to be thankful for what she already gave us as fans. I'll always remember, even though she sings lives, people are doubting it. No it's not live, I hear a back track blabla. Even singers with a average voice lipsync.

I can watch MC do this the whole day (49,774) by jaker20 from US

See, there's no crazy belts there. Some high notes yeah, but not Emotions, VOL high notes which is crazy for anyone even for her. Yeah, sure it's a whole lots of breathy singing, but the vocals are lovely, and her signature whistle is still there. And it's all live. I notice MC can do the whistle notes in her sleep easier, but struggles on sing on high notes. I dont know why that is, I'm not a singer so I don't know why that is the case. But I know MC can pretty much sing like that on the video the whole day and I will watch her. I will not watch her sing VOL, and WTB because I know she will lip it or parts of it. See the difference? Its just set-list collection, singing to the level of her current voice. Some may say, "well, she struggles singing Fantasy whch isn't exactly high notes". Well, it was arrange at a time when she can sing like that, so even if it's not crazy high notes the arrangement is still difficult to sing. I think she'll have another major success if she just fine tune the direction of her career, and leave the high notes singing behind her.

Jamaica performance (49,773) by Andrew from UK
I just watched the Jamaica performance (through gritted teeth). I'm always defending Mariah, and her legacy. But performances like this are difficult to defend. Like so many others have mentioned, mobile technology and YouTube/Twitter etc, mean everything goes global straight away. She needs to deliver credable performances, this was dire to say the least. Even Britney could do better than this. As a fan, I would rather see her do less performances, but make those ones count. Showing up and putting on an awful lip-sync show just to get a pay cheque isn't the way forward. She's clearly going through well publicised personal troubles, and maybe she should take time out of the limelight. As for the forthcoming Vegas shows, I really hope she isn't setting herself up for a major fall. It's all becoming painfully predictable.

I actually like "Don't forget about us" way more. I love the music and lyrics. I kind of think it was like the updated version of "I don't want to cry". "Shake it off" had potential to be number one. As did a lot of other songs from Mariah. "Prisoner", "To be around you", "Do you think of me", "I still believe", "Beautiful". But Mariah needs to do something different for a comeback. No more "We belong together" songs. Maybe a ballad or r&b type song. I believe Mariah already has that good single recorded. Whatever it is I hope it's *good*. We're either getting a number ones album, or a whole new album. Personally, I want a whole new album. I'm really excited that she's back with Sony. I just need her to get it together. Like someone posted, 45 is still young enough to have more success.

That's exactly what I feel. I adore MC, bought her debut in 1990 as soon as I heard her on the radio, but things do not feel right. She's my fave singer, but I care more about her happiness than her next tour, album, performance hairstyle/clothing, anything being said about Jamaica or the whole retirement debate.

How about just re-record? (49,770) by Ardis Logic from Earth
What if Mariah just went back in the studio and re-recorded all those songs that are hard to sing, with her current vocal state, over again. Take them down a notch or sing it differently where she feels more confident being able to hit the notes. It won't be the same as the original but at least it will not be as hard to watch her struggling to hit the notes. Just an idea.

Response to Shelly (49,769) by ADAM from USA
You misunderstood the message I was trying to convey. I want her to succeed as much as anyone else on this board does, otherwise I would't waste my time contributing to this site nor worrying about some celebrity's career. I wish people on here wouldn't be so sensitive to someone else's critique of Mariah when it doesn't align with their own thoughts and opinions. Mariah is at a place in her career where she is struggling to stay relevant and also fradulently perform for audiences by not using her "live" voice. These are both big issues that are only increasingly getting worst the longer she keeps up the charade and not address it. I don't care about how many other performers do the same practice of lip syncing and produce crappy music. I care about Mariah. That's why I'm on this website and support certain projects she aligns herself with, which I feel are worth my time and money. Please realize that this website is a community of fans with different opinions about Mariah Carey who like to vent and air the highs and lows about their favorite singer. I think if you keep that in mind, the experience you have with this website and its members will go much smoother.

Marissa (49,768) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Haha that has been one of my favourite Mariah shots for a very long time. She just looks so effortlessly sexy with the messy updo. Isn't the video just awesome? I really love all the videos of that era. She played with different hairstyle, makeup (Shake It Off anyone?) and outfits. For many fans DFAU kind of takes a back seat to WBT mainly because the latter was such a huge hit, so I guess the video of DFAU is kind of underrated. But I really like it. However I guess it's no WBT. That song is legendary.

Does "staying positive" entail making the same mistakes over and over, delivering bad performances and ruining your reputation as The Voice ? Just curious.

Mariah just tweeted Fifth Harmony (49,766) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
"Now playing Like Mariah by Fifth Harmony. I love it. I appreciate and enjoy you. Congratulations on your album." But let's ignore and pretend it hasn't already been retweeted almost 10,000 times in less than an hour because Mariah Carey should retire anyway, right? The only people who take negative [censored] fans seriously are tabloids. That's a fact. Mariah has made it a point to rise above and focus on the positive, but we all know her shade is legendary once you make the mistake of crossing her. *plays Like Mariah*

Elton John can't sing his 1970s up register anymore however he has modified his work to fit his lower tone and still can deliver a great rendition of "Bennie and the Jets" for example along with many other tracks.

Mariah's latest tweet / Bobbi Kristina (49,763) by Baby from Dreamville...Where There's No Beginning & There is No End
"My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Bobbi Kristina. Sending love and support to the family. God Bless." She's still alive and hopefully the rumours of her progress are 100% true. Stay positive in your prayers and in your own lives. Miracles happen every day if you let them.

The "r" word (49,762) by Marissa from USA
I think anyone who has proposed retirement has done that just because the way things are looking, people are losing faith that MC will ever pull it together. A fan's two biggest fears are their favorites either retiring or dying, so I understand the outrage. At the same time, I urge you to see that most of the people with retirement proposals aren't saying that to be mean spirited. It is just extremely hard to watch someone as gifted as Mariah continue to fall from grace.

Still enjoying her downfall? (49,761) by Edward from USA
At what point should people wake up and smell the coffee? This is way more serious than what some "bubbled lambs" want to make it out to be. I don't want Mariah to retire, but I don't blame any lamb for wanting her to do so, because I know they're doing it out of love. It is like some fans enjoy when Mariah put herself through all these embarrassments, and then call themselves super lambs. This is not a simple case of a bad performance, this stew has been in the pressure cooker for years, and now we see the consequences when the lid has been removed. The Emancipation Of Mimi was a great album, and Mariah was out there promoting her ass off, but we didn't have smart phones to document and almost instantly broadcast her every move on YouTube and social media. She got away with lipping her way through almost the entire TEOM era. The news fly fresh from the hands of concert goers, people don't have to wait. Even if Mariah came out with a super hit album, she's going to have to "really" deliver. All the supposed resting she has to do to sing one single song at a TV show and then fail is ridiculous to me. It hurts to see her go down like this because I consider her as family. Some of us are mad and frustrated because we care, if we didn't we wouldn't bother. People probably would have a little bit more sympathy for her if she were to at least say something. I hope she's been watching.

Random thought (49,760) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
So I am happy to see Missy Elliot come back with a bang. Performing at the Super Bowl really got her back on the map. She was a legend back in the day but in the middle kind of disappeared (or I lost track of her). But now she is back and people are going crazy over her. Apparently some of her songs are on the top 10 of iTunes now. I think the super bowl introduced her to a whole new audience and also got her back in the heads of people who already knew her. I so wish MC comes back with a bang. She should do shows which are viewed by a lot of people so that new the younger generation get curious enough to go through her back catalogue. Another random thought, I wonder why MC doesn't team up with hip cosmetics companies and collaborate with them on a line. Yes I know some fans don't like her selling products, but it could be fun and especially if she teams up with MAC which is extremely popular with people from all age groups, she can also get more people to recognize her. Then come on why is Mariah not on Vogue? Like even in her prime days.

Thank you. I like your posts too. When you said the thing about being selfish, I thought it was a jab, like saying we want to work her to the bone for our own selfish reasons. Thank you for clearing that up. I know I keep repeating myself but I want to put it out there again that I'llĀ support Mariah in whatever she decides to do. Even though I only know her through her music and interviews, the person is more important and valuable than the artist and entertainer.

Change of setlist (49,758) by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia
I agree with certain fans on this messageboard that recommended Mariah to ignore her belting hits songs (WBT, Hero, VOL etc) and just focus on changing her setlist that compliment her current vocals. The Lullaby Of Birdland is just perfect song for her current vocals. I list down Mariah's original songs that does not involved belting and much more suitable for her now:
1. Close My Eyes (she loves this song)
2. Petals (she loves this as well)
3. Looking In
4. Right To Dream
5. Underneath The Stars (just ignore the belting adlibs)
6. Love Story (acoustic)
7. Thirsty
8. Beautiful
9. I Know What You Want
10. Do You Know Where You're Going To
If she performed those above songs, fans and new would go crazy over her all over again.

Shelly (49,757) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
My post was not directed at you in anyway. I am just writing to clarify it, because I enjoy your posts. I think it's a healthy balance of positivity and reality. I like that you try to see the best in everything but yet acknowledge the bad sides when you see one. This is exactly what I like. My post is directed at people who will only shove down the "MC can do no wrong" thing down everyone else's throats. As for my comment on being "selfish" when I want more of MC, it's just a way of saying that I can never get bored of her. I obviously don't mean to force her to work for the rest of her life. That's sadistic. Anyways, hope that clears it up. I like your opinions, that's the kind of positivity Mariah needs, not the "oh MC you are flawless, anyone who says otherwise will be beheaded" type.

Jamaica Jazz is not just a small concert (49,756) by jaker20 from US
Someone tried to brush aside this new scandal. FYI, there's no small concert in this age of social media, YouTube and Twitter. This so-called small news is so bad it was on Yahoo front page the other day, it was trending on Twitter, it's on Billboard.com, Entertainment Tonight, ABC among others. MC is full of fresh TMZ-worthy material lately it looks like she is also gunning for Britney's low point years ago. Not to mention it's all over YouTube and Twitter for your babies and your babies' babies to watch for generations. It's as if MC is starting a new musical history of embarrassments so that it can be put into historical record for future generations to mock. The vocalists of the past didn't destroy their legacy this way. Whitney maybe, but it's annotated with her drug problem. MC has no excuse because in case you don't notice, this has been going on for awhile now, all recorded on video. In fact, she's not finished yet, she is still working so has more lip fails to put into YouTube and pop culture's entertainment. Enough. Just enough. Now you see why some MC's fans want her to retire. Because it's painful to watch. I personally don't want her to retire, but I understand, but I understand why some fans feel this way. And even more painful to accept is that the artist you once adored is on a path to destroy that same legacy you once adored. Remember, MC is not yet retired. Is she putting together a greatest hits of embarrassments?

Changing her catalog (49,755) by jaker20 from US
I can't stress this enough. Retirement is not the answer. MC just needs to change her catalog. Enough with VOL, WTB and Emotion, songs she can't give justice to anymore. She's just destroying her legacy and the legacy of those songs. She should sing more of her breathy songs, mid-tempo and on lower register. Fans will not like it because they want the big songs and cheer until her demise. But new people will say "oh I've not heard that, that's cool". Madonna does that, she takes risks singing unknown songs in her back catalog. MC is also at that stage now where she should be confident singing unrecognizable songs. They may be unrecognizable and unpopular, but she can at least give them justice, expose her songs to new audience, and she will not be destroying her legacy. MC's whistle is still there, her mid-range is also still very strong. It's the upper register that sounds like she choked on popcorn. She then try to improvise and by doing so, people are reminded "yeah she can't sing that note anymore". What if she sings a song she has not sung live, not hard to sing, and then slay it. That's the way to maintain your legacy and gain new fans. Her voice is no longer the same but it's still better than most. Well then sing songs that fit that new voice, and not songs from the last century, like you don't wear clothes when you were 19 years old.

God help he girl (49,754) by Natalia from Argentina
To talk about retirement is just offensive. I can't live without a new song from Mariah every year. I need new material to sing every day. I rather choose to do new music instead of Vegas that will increase all the mess/criticism and if she needs money she can invest in something else, and make music just for the art of love. I love "Make it look good song". I hope everything changes for the better soon. God help (the girl ) Mariah.
