Perfect sequencing (45,738)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
I agree that this probably is the most flawless sequencing that Mariah has done on any of her albums so far. Though it doesn't tell the clearest, most cohesive story, it's more of how she chose the transitional elements that really tie the whole thing together. The journal-writing, the drink-pouring, the match-lighting, dembabies singing, the Warhol-quoting - looks like Mariah's taken a page from Janet's book and it worked really well, as each track segues into the next seamlessly without any jarring tempo shifts.

Something about Mariah Carey (45,737)
by Jen from Manila from Philippines
| |
|
|
Hi to everyone, peace, love and respect to all citizens of Mariah Carey from all over the world. I think she should make a catchy video that is not too young or too simple just right for her stature. She should make more videos from her album Me. I am. Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse. I just don't get it why there are songs that were so underrated or didn't made into the charts or perhaps just the 100 or 200 mark. Ribbon, H.A.T.E.U and others should have made it big. Anyway no matter what the important thing is that she gives us beautiful, catchy, romantic, gospel, disco, ballad songs that we can listen and dance to hehe. As for me I listen to all her albums everyday. More power to us Mimi fans, to the queen Mariah and to her record label and staff.

This will be my last say on this topic. There's no point in comparing the two - really, they're different artists from different generations. Shade or no shade, Katy and Mariah will never be in the same league even in time comes that she surpasses her #1s, it's artistry that's timeless and speaks for itself.

Charmbracelet tour - Malaysia February 2004 (45,735)
by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia

|
Mariah is heading again for the second time in Malaysia in October 2014, so I just want to share my experience went to her concert in 2004. The show supposed to start at 8.00 pm but she only began at 9.15 pm. It's worth the wait, anyway. She started the show by sitting/sanding at the backseat of a convertible car and the driver drove round the stadium and Mariah waved and smiled to all her 30,000 fans that night. She performed 15 songs in total and the highlight of the show was when she showcased her powerful vocals belting her popular ballads; My All, Without You, Hero, I'll Be There and Through The Rain. Those 5 songs are very popular on the radio in Malaysia as well as in Asia. No lipsyncing or pre-recorded at all, trust me. Mariah sang live for the entire 1 hour and a half. Maybe her voice is more suitable to a warm climate. On her outfits, she only wore pink t-shirt and blue jeans throughout the show due to the protests made by certain Islamic extremists on her sexy and revealing outfits on stage. So I was very glad that Mariah didn't cancel her show and yet she obliged the dress code. On the next day after the concert, Mariah was commended by all the local press and medias for being a true professional. This really shows that Mariah is in fact a humble person and full of respect towards other religions, cultures.

Without a doubt, Help Me Make It Through the Night is my favourite cover of Mariah's. Now, I'll probably be tracked down and killed for what I'm about to say, but I really like Katy Perry's video. Infact, it would be awesome to see Mariah do something as playful in her next video.

I've never seen Mariah in concert so I was wondering if someone who's seen her could help me out. Does she do autographs after or before the concert? Is it mostly hits and a few new songs or the opposite way? Does she interact with the fans on stage sometimes?

My most favourite MC song is actually a cover, The Beautiful Ones, it may not actually be her song, but she sure made it her own, I find it more easier to listen to than the original. My second favourite cover is I still Believe (Pure Imagination), ugh it's gorgeous and mellow.

First posting (45,730)

I've followed the Archives for a long time without posting. Katy Perry pushed me over the edge, ha. I don't know why she aggravates me so much. I think it has something to do with the way she repeatedly disses her fellow female artists. You don't see Beyonce or Gaga disrespecting their peers, but supporting them. She's had three successful pop albums now, but in my opinion, that success is based on tacky music videos, a sexualized image, and autotune. Her live performances are sort of painful to listen to. It irks me that she has the audacity to turn MC into a caricature. It's so reductive (no, I am not a Madonna fan) and condescending. Even the line insinuating that she sucks at Carey-oke is laced with sarcasm. MC could shade the mess out of her with "Thirsty". So many lines in the song could apply to KP. It might be the mature thing for MC to take the "high road", but I kind of hope MC has some fun with the video and goes to town on all these disrespectful girls.

B / Katy Perry (45,729)

I liked your post about the songs. I agree, but you forgot "Heavenly". That's one hell of a song. I love when Mariah does gospel. Katy Perry , ugh. We shouldn't even bother discussing her. She's irreverent, and compared with Mariah is a joke. She has zero talent. She's just jealous of Mariah. A buddy of mine on YouTube put her on his "Worst female singers" vids. So if any of you all haven't seen any of them, please do. You'll laugh.

My favourite cover would be the first and fairest of them all, I'll Be There. I can (and have) played nothing but that song continuously for hours and it never gets tiresome. Unplugged is my favourite album and there was a certain magic in the air that night and it built and built until it peaked with that performance. It is light years better than the original, and I love watching performances of Mariah and Trey over the years singing this. Their friendship just shines through and it's such an appropriate song for two friends to sing together. Nothing tops it in my opinion, but honourable mentions would be for Without You, Endless Love with Luther and I Still Believe.

I agree. It's hauntingly beautiful. It's one of my favorites. Mariah is still the best. She writes her songs she's not like Beyonce and other so called divas who change a few words to get a writing credit or only agree to record a song if they get a writing credit. You can tell a song is written by Mariah. Like Faith Hill's Where Are You Christmas and the songs she wrote for Allure. She has a signature.

A horrible song and a pointless video. At first I didn't mind the Mariah look-a-like, but then she puts up a photo of Aretha? So Aretha gets respect and Mariah gets a drag queen? We are all well aware that Mariah loves vanity and touching herself, but it sure doesn't fall on Katy to emphasize that. I'm not too bothered by it as I don't take Katy seriously at all. But this video has confirmed it for me that Katy mostly sees Mariah as a joke. I officially dislike her.

ZachMC / Camouflage / your MIAMTEC mini concert (45,725)
by Brad from USA
| |
|
|
Hi lambs. I hope everyone is being well to themselves and to others. I just wanted to echo ZachMC's post about "Camouflage", my listening to MIAMTEC always begins there. I feel this song. In fact, my MIAMTEC loop or mini concert setlist for this album would consist of: (1) Camouflage, (2) Money, (3) Make It Look Good, (4) You Dont Know What To Do, and (5) Supernatural. Right in that order. I do enjoy other songs on the album, but these songs are the heart of it, for me. What's your MIAMTEC mini concert setlist look like?

"Camouflage" is underrated / brilliant sequencing (45,724)
by ZachSingsMariah from USA
| |

I feel like people haven't highlighted Camouflage enough. I really think it's one of the most unique and compelling ballads Mariah's ever done. I think the NY Daily News review described it best when they said it's "the closest to abstract a Mariah song will ever come". Stunning lyrics, enchanting vocal layering, haunting richness and complexity. It's a true tour de force, dahling. Also, I could not be more pleased with how seamlessly the album flows from one song to the next. I remember that series of pics MC posted back in April of her sitting at the beach reflecting on the songs and carefully thinking through the chronology and arc of this album, and that pensive attention to detail clearly paid off. The transitions are especially brilliant: the scribbles before "Faded", the "Dedicated" banter, the match before YME, the cyberspheric Meterorite intro. It goes on. In short, I can't get enough of this album.

Me. I am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse (45,723)
by B from USA
| |
|
|
Cry: A vocal showcase. Mariah proving she's still The Voice. Faded: The Mike Will Made It beat and Mariah's stunning vocals make this a standout. Dedicated: Mariah and Nas reminiscing over a sapmle of Wu-Tang Clan's Da Mystery of Chessboxin is perfection. #Beautiful: Mariah and Miguel harmonizing together is beauitiful. Thirsty: Pull down those Tom Fords and act like you see the genius of Mariah's clever lyrics. Make It Look Good: Stevie Wonder playing the harmonica while Mariah belts over that skipping beat is classic Carey. She proves she could still own the A/C market if she wanted to. You're Mine (Eternal): Mariah's best ballad since 2005. YDKWTD: Mariah and JD proving they can still make magic together. Supernatural: Mariah and her twins are too cute. Mariah belts like it's 1995. It's cheesy and adorable. Meteorite: Mariah doing disco. A true standout. Camouflage: A gospel ballad that finds Mariah reflecting on the end of a relationship. Money: A catchy 90's throwback jam. This is one of Mariah's best albums. It deserves to be heard.

Tour (45,720)
by Dove from USA

I hope she sings new songs on this tour. Like all the songs from MIAM and a few upbeat songs from other albums, like Migrate. I feel like she always sings Hero and I love Hero but I've already heard her sing it a million times. My favorite concert was the Daydream era Tokyo concert. I don't believe she'll ever sing those songs better than she did that night, so I don't think she should try. She has hundreds of good songs she's never sung live that are begging to be sung. Regarding covers, I love the song I Want To Know What Love Is. I think it's such a heart wrenching song but I feel the production could have been better. At the end when she really starts feeling it, it just ends. I feel it could have gone longer. A really good, longer, live version would have been awesome. I love the way she looks when she performed it on The View. Against All Odds is really powerful too. I can't choose a favorite. Or maybe she could sing them that good again but she's already sung them perfectly and it was captured on video. I just want to hear her sing songs she's never sung before.

Fave Mariah covers (excluding Christmas songs) (45,719)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines

I’m a fan of only some of Mariah’s cover versions due to various reasons that mostly boil down to song choice. For years I’ve wondered why she seemed to be more inclined to remake songs sung by men rather than women (as evinced by the studio versions she has created and released). And then one day, like a signature Mariah shade, it hit me hard: it’s more interesting, most times even easier to cover songs by the opposite sex. I mean the gender-bending alone elicits intrigue, as opposed to if she covers a woman’s song, she’ll be more hard-pressed to find ways to make it her own without having to stray too far from the original. Reactions from critics have generally been mixed to even negative regarding her cover choices throughout the years. My top 5 are: 5) One More Try (grown on me) 4) Without You (powerful vocals) 3) Open Arms (elegant) 2) Didn’t Mean To Turn You On (rare upbeat cover) 1) I Still Believe (best ever) My worst 3 (since there’s not really much left) are: 3) I Want To Know What Love Is (so watered down and unreasonably cut short) 2) Sweetheart (still don’t get it even after countless listens, must be a melody thing) 1) Last Night A DJ Saved My Life (enough said) What are yours?

Katy Perry is horrific. She has no talent and I will never understand her appeal. However, I really don't get the drama. I see the Mariah mention as a nod to Mariah, and as for the video depiction (stroking her legs in a tight dress), it's incredibly accurate. It's just a bit of fun, you're all taking it too seriously.

Tracks I like most MIAM (45,716)
by May from Denmark
| |
|
|
Personally: 1. Meteorite (I burnt my pc with this song on repeat lol) 2. Cry 3. Make it look good 4. You don't know what to do 5. One more try I really liked "You are mine", so probably would go number 6 on my list and I have played it quite a few times, my 3 years old loves it and she sings it in a very cute... loud way lol. The one I truly dislike but I guess I dislike any song that it sounds noisy alike, is Money. I tried to like it, but I can't. I know a bunch of people who love that song. I can't find the reason why. Supernatural is sweet but there's too much going on so I can't be bothered to listening to it as a stand alone track. It's a boom that the tweet thing was a fake but oh well, I still truly hope a re-release.

"No big deal" about Perry (45,715)
by May from Denmark
| |
|
|
While one could draw several things positive or negative - depending what you want to "find" - from one tiny little phrase in Perry lyrics, truth is that I think she just took the advantage of the moment and simply did a game of words "Mariah Ca-rey-o-ke". Bet she thought what singer name she could use when writing the lyrics and thought Mariah surname fit perfectly for that line, I bet she even thought "uuh, I'm so clever" while chopping a fluffy flamingo pen in a boyish pyjama on her bed ahahahaha. And I don't feel bothered at how MC was portrayed in the video, it's just someone pretending to be her in a sexy pose, nothing more. I would say, let's move on.

Just to clarify: my second post was not directed exclusively to you, and I would never mock another person so blatantly. It was a general reference to several posts about the "drama" of the whole deal. Re-reading my post, I can now see how the "Einstein" comment can be interpreted as being offensive when directed to a specific person (which was not my intention), so I'd like to apologize for that. It was more in the vein of "we don't have to be Einstein" to see the concept behind the Katy Perry video. In any case, I've devoted more time and words on the topic than I would originally care for, so I'll stop here.

Mariah Carey... The Elusive Chanteuse (45,713)
by Badr from USA
| |

I am wondering if Mariah is doing it on purpose, being elusive. Perhaps being "elusive" is part of her strategy. In regards to that pop "singer" mocking Mariah, let's see where she is in 5 years. It's funny because she's not "young" for pop music standards.
