4th of July / Stephen (38,546) (38,607)
by Stacey from USA

|
I was out of town so I missed the performances. Can I just say after watching them, wow. That is freaking Mariah Carey the way she should sound. Period. Those are the types of live performances we expect from her, not the shotty jobs done at AI and BET. I hope some of you can now see what some of us were talking about earlier. That voice is still there. She just needs to take care of it. Oh and I'm not saying all of FLAB from the Grammys '06 was the majority lipped, just a few notes at the end. Stephen, all we can do is quietly laugh at the end of the day, knowing we were right all along, lol.

I can't do anything but laugh at that article. They are acting Iike she was naming human babies. Some people lack a sense of humor. Her children are probably getting a kick out of it.

I love her take on "Help Me Make It". She made the song likeable. I feel her soul everytime I hear it. Just lovely.

I have the 4th of July performances on repeat (38,604)
by Lee from UK
| |

I love it when Mariah knows she's giving a good live performance. She likes to throw in some impromptu note changes and extensions just so people know she's singing that ish live. I am so proud of her 4th of July performances, there were definitely a lot of moments in there that could have come 90's Mariah. The chirping at the end of Beautiful, the full voice in Hero, the melody choices in America the Beautiful. Amazing, finally something I am proud to show my friends and family and be like "See? I told you she can still sing like she used to."

I really love There For Me. It's such a beautiful melody and her voice on that song is subtle yet has the something that just makes you stop and listen to that song.

"Slipping Away" without a doubt. It was sheer bliss when I discovered the track in the summer of 2001, admist all that noise about her so called breakdown. I still play it often, even today.

I call it as I see it. When you talk of Mariah Carey, it's her voice first and foremost, before any other secondary aspect about her, like her songwriting and production. I'm guessing you have seen the very recent Independence Day celebration clip? Lol. Nobody's saying she's an alcoholic, but when you have a voice as she does, that's basically an instrument; in which you've built an entire career and brand off on, it would be wise to take care of it, or don't you think? And that does not include drinking alcohol of any sort as regularly as she does. Also health wise, it's not the best.

My favorite b-side is "Everything Fades Away". This song has such a rich, soulful tone and is deeply emotional and melancholy. It is an absolute injustice that it was not included on the US version of Music Box. Perhaps, like the similarly brilliant "Slipping Away", it was considered too R&B.

Love Hero for the first time (38,598)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway

I really enjoyed Hero on 4th of july, I loved how she went down instead of up, now that her voice can't handle the song like she used to in the '90s. And who can blame her, she is 20 years older. I have sung to Mariah all my life, and in my youth, I really could follow her to some point, but now I'm 30, my voice has gotten really low. I know that you more prone to that when you are a man, but women experience it too. So I love that Mariah uses her lower register where it used to be high. I love her lower register, always has. It's really easy though to see when Mariah is lip synching or not, she uses her muscles in her face when she really sings, especially some intricate movement of her forehead. Hero was live, and I'm glad Mariah disproved the critics and did it live. I have never been a fan of Hero, but maybe I am one now.

Exactly. Also every singer has good performances and bad performances and most sing to track on television. Hell, I miss the good old days of Soul Train when every one lipped or sang to track. People seem to overly judge Mariah. And really Terna, you want to bring up Slimey? All he ever did was start or expand on rumors to malign MC's name. He's a non-Mf'ing factor. Lol. I loved MC's 4th of July show performances. The red outfit was outstanding.

Mariah's voice (38,596)
by Chica from UK

I think we can all speculate about what has or hasn't happened to Mariah's voice, but at the end of the day nobody but Mariah knows the truth of the matter. All this talk about drinking is kind of silly too. First of all, no one really knows how much Mariah is drinking. People see a few pictures of her with a glass of champagne and start calling her an alcoholic or saying she has a problem with alcohol. I mean seriously. Also at the end of the day she is a human being and should be allowed to have a drink if she wants to. People talk about her going out to parties and staying up all night post 1997. It's not like she went off the rails or anything, she didn't go all Britney Spears on us. She was enjoying herself as a young women, which she had the right to do. Hell, some days I don't go to bed until the early hours of the morning. Lastly, supposing she does have an alcohol problem, why are people getting on her case like it's her own fault. There may be reasons behind it. Fame is hard to deal with, many stars turn to drugs and alcohol to deal with things. Look at all Mariah went through with Tommy, would it be surprising that she could have turned to alcohol? Where is the sympathy? Whitney took drugs and her voice was ruined. People sympathised with her and didn't blame her for what happened. Why does Mariah not deserve the same treatment, especially from her own fans?

I hope the universally positive response to Mariah's July 4th performance will help her build the confidence she needs to continue to amaze us. I believe confidence is more than half the battle. When she really gives it her all, she can do it.

That was truly beautiful. The smoothness in her voice made me feel so at home. Her whispery falsettos here are to die for. And what about that strong vibrato as she sings "you'll find the way"? Wow. I don't even like Hero and she made me fall in love with the song after all these years. Perfection.

Hero and the voice (38,587)
by Dee from Uk

Hero was sang beautifully and that in my opinion is down to confidence. She has sung this song many times, it's her song, she owns it in every sense of the word. The only thing I think affects Mariah's voice is sleep and nerves. I know people may think after 20 years she shouldn't have any, but I really think she really suffers with nerves and pressure of the song when it's broadcast, audience and how many times it's been performed. When anybody does anything for the first time, they get better the longer they go on. Ive seen Mariah live at Charmbracelet a few times and her voice had good and bad days. We have to accept Mariah has other priorities now and her voice comes second to all that. Saying this, I think this will be her last album for a while, so that's why it's celebratory.

Wow, just wow. Wonderful performance all around. I really feel the decision to delay the album was a good one and of all the #Beautiful remixes I think the Young Jeezy one is the strongest. Those new vocals are awesome.

Mariah's inconsistent voice (38,584)
by Special K from USA

I thought Giselle L. and Tierna posts about this issue were spot on. I too never bought into the nodules theory, Mariah aging, or the argument that her 90's songs are harder to sing than her current songs. I've seen Mariah in concert plenty of times throughout her career. During the Charmracelet tour her voice was spot on crazy. Darn near perfect. When you compared the touring voice to the album, there was no comparison. Also, during that tour Mariah was in tip top shape physically. Her body was off the charts. During TAOM tour some cities Mariah nailed it, others she didn't. Perhaps celebrating the success of the album a little too much? Perhaps way too many cities that put strain on the voice? Now, we hardly ever talk about the Angels Advocate tour. I saw Mariah twice and again, she nailed it. During that time Mariah was in love and in a really good place personally. Not to be vulgar but having great, hot, awesome sex on a daily is very good for the mind and body. Have mercy.

There she is. That version of Hero was the best version Mariah has sung since 1993. I don't even care if it was from three different live versions. I am just enjoying the smoothness of her voice here.
