Singles that should've been #1 (38,965)
by KeShawn Taylor from United States
| |
|
|
As for singles, I was shocked that did not reach #1 in the US, the first one definitely being "Without You". It was such a huge hit and I believe set the standard of what a pop ballad should sound like when it is a remake. "When You Believe" with Whitney I also expected to be more successful than it was. While it was a huge success worldwide for both women, it did not compare to either of their greatest hits as solo artists, though Whitney's popularity had declined as well as her public image at the time of its release. I won't even get into the singles released from Butterfly and Rainbow; those singles suffered tremendously from the lack of support from her label, especially instant classics like "Breakdown", "The Roof", and "Can't Take That Away". I did expect "Bye Bye" to at least crack the top 10, as did I for "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time", which I thought would definitely be the song of the summer of 2008. All of the singles from Memoirs definitely did not lead up to my expectations for them. More specifically, I definitely believe that "Obsessed", which was all over radio that summer, and "I Want to Know What Love Is", would've been sure fire #1 singles for MC. Due to lack of promotion and the music business gearing more towards a pop/techno phase at this time, these singles had little to any chance of making a sufficient impact on the charts.

Should've been #1/singles (38,964)
by KeShawn Taylor from United States
| |
|
|
This is a very interesting topic that I often find myself trying to find battling in my mind. Before I get to singles that should've been #1, how about songs that should've been singles? For her first three albums, I actually agree with single selection, though I would've loved to see "Til The End of Time" or "All I've Ever Wanted" be released as singles. The fact that "Underneath the Stars" and "Forever" never got commercial releases disappoints me. On airplay alone, "Forever" was charting strongly. These two would've definitely been hit records for Mariah. The same to be said for "Butterfly", "The Roof", and "Breakdown". "Breakdown" is undeniably the greatest Mariah Carey single to never get commercial release. There's no denying that at the peak of her crossover reign this song would've been a huge hit. It also baffles me the limited release given to "Can't Take That Away". Still to this day, I see this as one of her top three inspirational ballads. I also believe that "Against All Odds" should've been released in the United States. This is arguable Mariah's greatest remake. "Lead The Way" from Glitter is classic Mariah, and if promoted properly could've definitely provided assisting the backlash that Glitter was receiving. E=MC2 as a whole just didn't release proper singles. Why "Migrate", "Side Effects", "I'm That Chick", "Love Story", and "For The Record" were not singles is insane. These were records crying for radio airplay. Also, "Ribbon" and "Inseparable".

New album launch (38,963)
by KeShawn Taylor from United States
| |
|
|
There have been so many interesting topics going on as of late on the message board. The main one being geared towards anticipation for the new album. With "#Beautiful" now officially platinum, time has come for a follow up. However, with Mariah still being injured, I can't lie and say that waiting until a full recovery would be a bad thing so that the single may be properly promoted. I'm thinking that the new single, whatever it is, will probably be dropped following the release of The Butler next week. Whether or not this new single features Wale, I'm not sure. But he did say to expect a release from the two very soon. In regards to the track listing, I really am quite fond of it. Several of these tracks are ones that have held several discussion of production. I do agree that this also be a fraud listing, like the one that leaked for MOAIA two months before it was released. I would love for the new album to drop in November. Promotion wise, I feel like if a second single is dropped by the end of the month, that gives enough time for steadfast promotion and the launch of her tour in October. November also marks the launch of a lot of other top female artist releasing works including Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lopez. Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, and Rihanna are all also expected to have releases towards the end of the year. While summer would've been easy domination for Mariah, fall will prove to be a competitive season. Here's to Mariah once again returning to #1.

Stephen / other thoughts (38,962)

I think she still understands on a global scale. The last album "Memoirs" had "I Wanna Know What Love Is", which I feel shouldn't have been released in the USA as a single, but to an international market as a single. I enjoyed it on the album, yes. I think that song was huge in Brazil. But the video was "bleak". She needs better videos and better promotion for each single. Because what might do well in Europe or Asia or South America may not do well in the US. Another example could be "Boy" and "The One". She could've still released "Boy" to another market outside of the US as a single. But "The One" could've been a hit in America at that time. It actually would've put her right back on track before 'Mimi".

Randy, I haven't heard those versions of "Someday" you talked about. If you are willing to share them with me so I can have my own epiphany , I would really appreciate it: b_terius@yahoo.com. As for Thank God I Found You remix, I agree it was epic, one of my favorites. It is sad Billboard changed its rules. Remixes that sound completly different from the original now chart as different isongs, that's why the #Beautiful remixes are very similar to the original.

Mariah is a global star (38,959)
by Wonwon from Indonesia
| |
|
|
Hi all, this is my first message on this site. I think Mariah was very big in Asia, especially in Japan, and yes in Indonesia. Maybe Mariah's song are not as popular as Rihanna's these days, but as I can see, here lots of local singers sound like Mariah. So, the influence Mariah gives to the world is really true. I don't know how Mariah does in other places, outside the US. As I know, Mariah is very big in Brazil now. And sure, people here respect Mariah for her vocal ability. No matter it's Hip Hop or Pop, I love Mariah. So, Brazil, Japan, US, Asian countries, I think it makes Mariah an international megastar. I think Mariah is bigger than Madonna here.

Joachim / Meriwhether86 (38,958)
by Stephen from London, United Kingdom

Joachim, you're right to the extent that Mariah hasn't had as many number 1 singles as the "artists" you mention in Europe. However, she has had hit singles, and constantly makes top 10, over 23 period, unlike the artists you mention. More importantly though, look at Mariah's album sales. They're greater worldwide than in the USA. Daydream sold around 7 million in the US. Where did the 18 million get sold? Meriwhether86, I understand why you were getting defensive, and I agree with most of your post. I'd just ask that you appreciate Mariah has come many territories to sell records because she used to understand the importance of selling on a global sale. In terms of album sales, she's sold s@#t loads worldwide. With that being said, she's not been relevant in the UK music wise since TEOM. She owned the 90s though.

Zachary and Edward (38,957)
by Randy from USA
| |
|

Zachary, I agree with you about Right To Dream. It's an awful vocal but probably her best lyric ever. Who else could make a sad song about having hope? Genius. Most lambs slept on that one. Edward you broke my heart with Someday. Here's the thing. I hate the album version but the black version. Excuse me, the R&B version is sick. Whenever my 90s playlist comes on and I hear that sick beat intro with the synthesizer/bass, I go off in my car and have to start it over and turn it up. And Touch My Body is genius. The melody in the verses is sick. People are always shocked that I know the words because they go by so fast. Thank God I Found You is a throw away. Non-fans don't know that song. It was driven by lambs buying the single only. It was not played on the radio at all. But the Make It Last remake is epic. That's all.

Mariah Carey is America like apple pie (38,956)
by clueey23 from USA
| |
|
|
Mariah Carey is an American treasure. Vocally unmatched in terms of Beyonce, Gaga, Madonna, Rihanna, Katy Perry and many more. Mariah is like apple pie. Whitney Houston was another. And I could care less about a global status. And I also appreciate the fact that she knows what "Without You" did for her career globally. The fact she is big in the biggest market in the world, America, is what matters most. She is most def an Elvis of this generation. Whereas everyone else is still trying to catch up. MC is from NY and didn't move across the pond and pick up a fake accent trying be something she isn't. That's another reason why it's easy for me to accept and respect MC's contribution to music in terms of working with HipHop artists and HipHop producers because she grew up in New York where that genre of music originates from. So it's never a shock to me when she wants to work with rappers or make more R&B records. Her idols are American soul singers ie; Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and other American legends. If she wanted to be accepted in the UK or globally to the max, she would've made more "Without You"s. But lets not act like she hasn't reached around the globe either. People on this very board are not in America nor American. So to me she is a global star that doesn't have to put on a costume and be a clown for the public in order to be accepted in the world, unlike countless others.

Number one fan (38,955)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|
|
I have allways thought of myself as the number one fan of Mariah Carey in Norway, maybe someone in Norway can counter it. But I have searched the internet for what it's worth, and I think I have have a sollid reason to say what I'm about to say. Compared to Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Madonna, Mariah has nothing to compare with world number ones. In fact, in the 2000's, there are many artist that have more number ones than Mariah. Search the WIkipedia, Mariah is actually a mediocre star compared to the biggest stars today. Mariah is a global star, but she has never had a golbal hit, besides Withouth You, compared to artists of today. So, instead of constant argue about what artist is the greatest, we all should think of who is the greatest singer. Because, compared to other artists, Mariah is in the top 20. Why should we rembember Mariah? Beause noone could sing like her. But don't be fooled. there are many female artists that is bigger than her. But her voice, no.

Treasure (38,954)
by George Golden from UK
| |
|
|
Am I the only one getting a positive vibe from the album track listing? "Hope street", "Make it look good", etc are sounding promising. The duet with Stevie should be like a dream to listen to, the one one with Kells should be total drama ala "Betcha gon know", which reminds me that song would have been epic like "We belong together" if they had released it lol. It was totally different from anything she had ever done and it even debut just under the Hot 100 without any promo. So many missed chances since her last number one that I can't help but feel like certain "people" do not want her to have another number one. It's fine as long as she comes up with great albums. We get really angry and frustrated at Mariah that we forget what a treasure she has been in our lives, especially mine. Her songs are the soundtrack of my life. God bless you all.

Songs that should've gone to #1 (38,953)
by Edward from USA
| |
|
|
I think the follow songs should've gone to the #1 spot: "Can't Let Go", "Make It Happen", "Endless Love" with Luther, "Without You", "Anytime You Need a Friend", "All I've Ever Wanted", "All I Want for Christmas", "Underneath The Stars", "Forever", "Butterfly", "Whenever You Call", "Shake It Off", "One and Only", "Migrate", "Obsessed". Mariah and Luther were perfect, and the video for the song at one of his concerts was epic, minus Luther's sweat of course, lol. I would replace "Someday", "Thank God I Found You", "Touch My Body" with any song from the former list above anytime.

Right to Loving Us Long Time (38,951)
by Zachary from Croatia
| |
|
|
There are two song for which I am really sorry they didn't hit number one spot on Billboard: Right To Dream and I'll Be Loving U Long Time. The first one is an amazing ballad with such a great message but crappy video and awful promotion. Second one had a cheap video which resulted poor chart success. Promotion was ok because she sang it live several time and the performances were really ok.

Without You / Special K (38,950)
by Stephen from London, United Kingdom
| |
|
|
I was gonna say Without You, but it was such a massive hit in Europe, and went to number 1 in the UK, that I decided to leave it out. I'd go as far as to say that Without You is Mariah's biggest hit outside of the US, and is what she is most known for, especially in the UK. I was shocked when I found out that it never made it to number 1 in the US. It's a great rendition of the song. I find you really see Mariah's artistry when she covers a song, because invariably she does a better job, or takes the melody to a different level. She has a great ear, and is a very good interpreter of music.

#1/ great singles (38,949)
by De Koning from Holland
| |
|
|
Songs that could've went to #1 are in my opinion: Prisoner, And You Don't Remember, So Blessed, Music Box, All I've Ever Wanted, When I Saw You, Whenever You Call (solo), Close My Eyes, Outside, Angels Cry (solo). By the way, Without You was a huge success here in Holland, but that song I;ve heard too often, so it's absolutely not my favourite. I also don't like My All. However, the live versions of this song I can appreciate.

Songs that could've went to #1 / other thoughts (38,948)
by clueey23 from USA

For me records that should've been #1 are "Shake It Off" and "Can't Let Go". And I agree with Special K about still being mad about "Migrate" not being released. After "Touch My Body" hit #1, she should've stayed in that vain. "Migrate" is the song that all of the radio programmers loved, not to mention T-Pain's star power at the time. I also feel that after "Obsessed" she should've released "Up Out My Face" remix with Nicki and then slowed it down with "Hate U" with a better video. I think it would've had a better response. I agree the video for "#Beautiful" should've been the Spanglish version video. It just seemed so much authentic and fitting for the song. Those motorcycle shots were bleak. Nothing like the "Sweetheart" motorcycle shots, which were actually great and real.

Without You (38,946)

I'm still in disbelief that Without You didn't hit #1. Reasons why: 1. Perfect, powerful, powerhouse, vocals. 2. Production was on point. 3. Mariah took another artist's signature song and made it her own.

Randy / great game (38,945)
by Will from Australia

Great game Randy. From releases that didn't hit number one I'd have to say AIWFCIY was a big disappointment. Without You is still one of my favourite vocals of hers and I wish that would have hit the top. Would've liked to have seen When I Saw You and Whenever You Call (solo) get released and more recently Ribbon, which I thought was very current and a missed opportunity. (Look at Miley Cyrus We Can't Stop now which is quite similar.)

So much to say (38,943)
by RadChad from United States
| |
|
|
Okay I'm I know I'm like a week behind on some of these topics, but bare with me (I just figured out where to send messages on the new layout ). Arianna Grande: I will admit she's cute (for this generation), I like her, and I can hear the Mariah influence. However hearing the influence and "sounding just like Mariah" is two totally different things people. In my honest opinion she sounds nothing like MC singing/vocal wise, MC's voice is light years ahead. The only thing she did remotely close was the whistles in her cover of Emotions and the verdict is still out on the legitimacy of those notes because her live and studio whistles on other songs sound less impressive (a la Christina-ish). But she has a good voice, and I actually would like to see her do well, it just keeps MC's legacy alive. Okay Randy, you are definitely on to something brother. It has always confused and bothered me as to why MC wasn't apart of the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack, and your theory along with something Babyface said in concert (post Whitney's passing) makes perfect sense. You may be able to find it on YouTube, but to paraphrase he said when he and Whitney discussed who should be apart of the soundtrack she was very particular as to who should be on there and objected to certain names that he brought up. He said she was like "C'mon Face, I gotta have my girls on there" he followed by saying "I won't tell you all who she was talking about". So there's no doubt in my mind MC was that person. I mean virtually every current and legendary R&B singer at that time was on that soundtrack except MC. It was very purposed, but it's great that MC and Whitney eventually became friends and duet partners. Song that should've been #1: Make It Happen, Anytime You Need A Friend, Butterfly, Breakdown, Say Somethin' (at least top ten), Obsessed, and #Beautiful (at least top 5). Enwar: How could you hate Never Too Far, I mean I can understand not wanting it to be a single as in staying an album gem, but not liking it at all? Really? I don't even need to explain the epicness of her vocals on that one. Definitely a defining vocal moment in my book. Moving on: MC collaborating with Wale is not a typical/random rapper thrown on the track situation. Artist like Wale, Kendrick Lamar, or Drake are ideal for a Mariah track in my opinion. Like someone else said, I love MC's ballad, but I also love her jams just as much. Mariah always wanted to, always will, and always has bumped hard, it's what set her apart from the other big voiced divas and made her the leader of the pack 23 years later. Finally: If this tracklist is true then I'm excited, the fact that we see Big Jim Wright, Walter A., and Stevie Wonder's names in the credits is all I needed to see to believe that she wasn't playing around in that studio all these months (not that I was doubting her anyway).

Mariah's CD (38,942)
by Anonymous from

I think it's interesting that you guys can't simply wait for this woman to come out with her cd. There are so many other artist out there to listen to that have great music out there. I don't blame Mariah for taking a moment to come out with this album. I finally started listening to Beyonce's album called 4 and it's amazing. She goes back to that old school sound in her song called School In Life. It's absoultely amazing. Kelly Rowland just released an album this June and it's great. Check out the song called Down On Love, which I believe Kelly has better writing skills than Mariah with some of her songs from this album. A great vocal performance from her song called "Put your name on it". And another good written song and vocal called #1. Her single "Kisses down low might not be your speed", but It's good to me and the video is cute. I'm just saying that Mariah got some competition this year, so going back to the drawing board is wise. If any of you guys are Destiny Child fans, check out the song "You changed". All of them sing on that song and it's refreshing.
