Showbiz 411 article (38,375)
by Stephen from London, United Kingdom

The latest article is pretty interesting. He's usually got the correct insider scoop on Mariah. If there are internal differences over the creative direction of the album, then Mariah should compare the reaction Triumphant got to #Beautiful. She's spent the best part of 3 years making this album. It's starting to get a bit ridiculous. Like I said before, I'm happy to wait for quality music, but if she and the label still can't decide on her creative direction after all these years, then Mariah is again in difficult territory. It seems her career has been marred by label infighting since 1997. The only time it was on point was during TEOM and the beginning of E=MC2. I agree with the label's view on Mariah's creative direction, but that's Mariah's decision to make. She's the artist and if she wants to make crap like Truimphant, then that's what she should do. Nevertheless, if she is an artist that wants to sell, then maybe she should compromise. For the record, I love hip hop and really enjoy when Mariah incorporates it into her music. She's just got a bit stale with it in recent years for me. Her ballad and mid tempo game has been better for me.

Charmbracelet (38,373)
by Billy from Greece

|
I've been listening to "Glitter" and "Charmbracelet" lately. The former is really a blockbuster production: the sound is crispy, Mariah's vocal performances are startling, the grooves are banging and the songs are "immediate", namely, they capture your attention right away. On the other hand, "Charmbracelet" may be her most complex work and least accessible album upon first listen. The Rolling Stone review is quite on point saying that overlapping phrases and countermelodies complicate the listening experience, and (immediate) hooks are absent for the most part. While this is a reason why the listening experience feels "muffled", I always thought that it was also because the sound was not properly mixed. "Rainbow" and "Glitter" are pristine 'clear' in terms of sound, whereas "CB" is just too cluttered at times (f.i. "Yours", which really did not translate live), something that, apart from the "walls" of background vocals, has to do with the way the cd was mixed. On the other hand, songs with more basic skeletons, like "Clown", sounded great live. I still have a soft spot for this album, and I just adore "Lullaby" and "Subtle Invitation".

As bummed as I am about the push back, I am excited that Mariah is putting so much into this album. I hope a second single is released prior to the release date. I agree with the others on here that Mariah went back to the drawing board and thought about her legacy, especially being all about the voice, a songbird, and throw Idol into the mix with every female pop contestant trying to imitate her, she's definately has some great songs in store for us lambs. I only hope the world is ready and willing to give her another comeback. Nothing will top TEOM, but her legacy is about to have some moments, especially with her mentioning to Billboard last year how the album will have more ballads than usual. This is why we loved her to begin with. As far as a classics album, i.e. covers - Mariah is a songbird and she is damn good at writing. Don't request another Rod Stewart covers the classics album; it ain't going to happen. Jus saying, maybe a jazz vocal album in 10 years. Maybe.

Thoughts (38,371)

I think that she has decided that after both Triumphant and Almost Home failed and #Beautiful hit she's decided to go that route. She decided to scrap the Jermaine collaborations and scrapped the album and invited Miguel to Capri to see what else they could write together. I think she'll go with a retro throwback disc with songs like Stay The Night and #Beautiful. I really hope she does that it would be refreshing and classes up her image.

So I thought about this just now, so I came on to the messageboard to share. I will say I had a when I read that she is pushing her album back. However, I understand that she may be in that mode of the creative process, but what would suck is that what if we wait longer and they start taking songs out of the album. Not sure if she has a say in that or not, but that would really suck rocks if we wait and at the end of the project songs didn't make it on the album for whatever reason.

The way I see it (38,369)

It has always been my opinion that after Mariah tasted the waters with Triumphant, she definitely went back to the drawing board to change things up, and that's why she is recording new material and tweaking some songs she decided to keep. I am happy because that means she is really making sure the music is good. I just hope once the new date has been set, she doesn't push it again. I think Memoirs was affected seriously by pushing the album like two times. I was a little bit worried when I read that executives at at a listening party liked what they heard, not that they loved it.

#MC723 no more (38,368)
by Musti from UK

I can't say I'm not a little sad about the pushback. But I'm not disappointed, in fact I think it might be a good move to delay. The remix of #Beautiful hasn't come out yet, and I think she would want to release a second single before the album drops. July 23rd would have pushed that a little. Perhaps they're trying to give #Beautiful a fair shot at becoming top 10 (top 5 even) with the release of the remix. The delay should give them ample time to release a second single.

Album delay (38,364)
by Licia from USA

People on twitter last night were having a fit because the album is delayed. Those fools were going too far and it made me ashamed to be a fan. They even started attacking Jermaine for no reason. I mean we are all disappointed, but it's not that deep. I'd rather wait to get a great album than get a rushed mediocre one. Twitter, Facebook , and other social media sites have sort of taken away the excitement of getting new music from your favorite artist. Before social media, if things didn't go as planned, we just sat there and waited. We didn't have all this whining and posting pics of our self with knives up to our throat (yes they posted crap like that on twitter). An album push back is nothing to be devastated about.

The push back (38,363)
by Will from England
| |
|
|
I am a little disappointed, but I want the quality album that we all want and love, so I don't mind waiting a bit longer for it. Plus it would make sense since there's been little chatter about the album cover etc. If anything, this has made me more excited for the album, because it shows she really wants a quality and memorable album. I suspect it will be released near or around the beginning of the world tour, so she can promote the album at the same time. For any lambs who really are distraught by this, TEOM was pushed back and look what it turned into.

Delay (38,362)
by Stephen from London, United Kingdom

It's a shame that Mariah has to delay the album, but if it means great music, then it's fine by me. It also gives her time to get her marketing game on point. She's upping the promo, which is a good thing. She probably needs more time to finish the music and get the second single and accompanying video on point as well.

The Art delayed (38,360)

I'm not disapointed that she delayed the album. I'm sad. I'm anticipating this album like no other in 23 years of loving this woman and, for me, this was such a big blow that I'm actually crying as I write this post at 4 am. I did not see this coming. But Iunderstand, because she wants to give us her best, so I wait.

I get where you are coming from. I do. The song has been out for over two months, but as you know, the general public has a way of moving on to new songs quite quickly. With airplay stalling last week, we may see a drop. We may not, especially with MC slated to appear on many different shows in the coming weeks. I only want buzz to remain high in the weeks before the album drops. BTW: I like the album title too. On a side note: You think I jump the gun which comes across as negative. I disagree. I try to express my opinions with thoughtful reasons behind them. I just don't criticize something for no reason. Know what I mean? That's why I feel my thoughts fall in in the category of constructive criticism not negativity. Besides that whole conversation about promotion, etc with Edward and others was for fun. I think some fans need to not take things so seriously. Right? Right. At the end of the day, we all want the album to do well. Peace.

"The art of letting go" pushed back (38,358)

So the album will not be coming out on 7.23. This is why I'm glad she wasn't all over tv doing so much promotion too soon without a finished product. MC is an artist. And the creative process has to come full circle before you promote a project.

Favorite lead single / new album / promotion (38,356)
by clueey23 from USA

My favorite lead single was Touch My Body. And then came #Beautiful. Touch My Body was everything when it came out. I remember downloading the acapella just to hear all of the harmonies at the end of the song. So beautiful. And the remixes. But currently my favorite lead single is #Beautiful. I have been a fan of Miguel since 2010 when he came out with "All I want is you". He is an amazing talent. And MC is my favorite artist ever so the combination is like pure magic. #Beautiful is like classic Americana and one hell of a love song. Simply amazing. It's like understated perfection. and I've enjoyed every live performance. love the way Miguel always sings the harmony to his vocals. That summer jam performance when MC goes into her whistle register, took me back to "All in your mind" days. All I can say is we are in for a real treat with this album. The title "The art of letting go" just speaks volumes for my personal life right now. I'm so excited for these upcoming weeks and I'm glad the promo is starting right on time.

Fav lead single and sampling (38,355)
by Blake from USA

My favourite would have to be Fantasy, but Honey is a close second. TMB as an honorable mention. About WBT, it was the bigger hit but TMB's video still has people talking. So funny and MC looked smoking. I don't get the fuss with the sampling. Alot of haters rip on Mariah and say she's not a songwriter if she uses samples in her songs (Loverboy, Fantasy, Dreamlover, Heartbreaker, etc.) but others sing or rap over an entire song that was a hit years earlier: Puff Daddy, Sean Kingston, etc. I think if it works with the melody that was written, good for them.

Why are you shocked? Fantasy used the sample of Genius Of Love by the Tom Tom Club. She also used another sample for the Heartbreaker remix. I wouldn't say either song is a rip off just because she used samples of other songs.

I'm shocked (38,353)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|

I actually didn't know that Heartbreaker was based on the sample of "Attack of the name game". I have now listened to it on YouTube, and I'm shocked that its a complete ripoff. I thought Heartbreaker was similar to Fantasy, but I did think it was a composition on its own. Oh well, I guess all artist borrow from eachother, and I shouldn't be that surprised that the song resembles "Attack of the name game". Never the less, it's the vocal that does it for me on Heartbreaker, so I guess then it was a clever move. I also have to say, that "Touch my body" was a great lead single. I live in Norway, not that too many like Mariah here, but many people like "Touch my body" and often the remixes. I actually think that "Touch my body" was a bigger hit internationally than "We belong together", and many more remember "Touch my body" than WBT. Does anybody else think that TMB was a bigger hit than WBT?

My point is, people jump the gun on this message board more often than not. The song is almost 2 months old and the album is coming in July. There is still time for it to grow and be promoted. Along with a 2nd single. But everyone acts like she should've been all over tv on every single talk show last month. We just learned the album title, which I think sounds very deep and introspective. There is still enough time before the album comes out to do all of that. If #Beautiful didn't go top 10, I would be still just as satisfied that I actually still hear MC on the radio, because it's been a minute since we have seen her in the top 20. So constructive critism has a time. And when you jump the gun, it comes off as being negative, especially since she was still in the process of putting the album together.

Favorite lead single (38,351)
by Stacey from USA
| |
|
|
I agree with Stephen. All her lead singles during the 90s were so radio friendly with awesome beats, etc. But how do I choose a favorite lead single? So hard. They are all so good. Would you believe I didn't like Fantasy when it first dropped? It took OSD coming out to buy the album and now I can't get enough of Fantasy. Funny how things are sometimes. Ok, it's a tie between Fantasy and Heartbreaker. For me, I normally don't like rappers in songs. I prefer the rapper on the remix. But in this case, Jay-Z's lines fit so perfectly in the song, you can't help but rap along with him. And that beat? Wowza. Fantasy is up there because she changed the course of music by fusing together pop and hip-hop. All the artists who make money off that concept have MC to thank.
