I don't want to sound combative but the level of disrespect of some lambs is mind boggling, hence my posts for reality check. If you don't like Caution that is fine. But don't turn around and say she should just make what she's good at instead of chasing the charts. You are the one chasing the charts by asking her to make similar albums from the past which is success-based. What she's accomplished in the past and what she is now can co-exist, and if you are unable to accept that, then my point remains: you are living in fantasy land and you are free to do so as I am to call you out for your hypocrisy.

Bill, I pray Mariah never has to address "issues" relating to her voice. As a perfectionist that she is, she continues to record music, and put an effort to work with whatever state her voice is in.
We all have free will, and can move on to artists we believe have voices meeting our ear preferences, instead of wanting to strip Mariah of her dignity by explaining to the world the state of her voice.

With all due respect it's not the lambs living in fantasy land, it's Mariah herself. She's the one covering [Always be my baby] and [Close my eyes] in 2020. She's the one who constantly claimed the pandemic restored her old voice. She's the one living in the past, or as you put it in fantasy land. She's always trying to remind us of what was and lead us to believe that more is on the way. Those six years that everyone alludes to, the peak years, had three elements: the voice, Walter A, and Tommy Mottola. None of which are present anymore. But let's not get it twisted. Those six years were probably the best six years any artist in the history of recorded music has ever had. If Mariah wants to go current and make music for the teens she has one more chance, after that I foresee jazz and gospel albums in her future.

What if Hero was given to Gloria Estefan (100,459)
by Rashidi Rahim Rick from Malaysia

I'm just bored, so while listening to Music Box, I was thinking what if Hero was given to Gloria Estefan, what song would Sony or Tommy/Mariah would release as second single after Dreamlover? I would pick All I've Ever Wanted or Never Forget You. Imagine Mariah singing live for All I've Ever Wanted especially the bridge and the final chorus. Just wow. Maybe Everything Fades Away or Do You Think Of Me would be chosen to be included in the regular album version (because they lack one song after Hero was given out).

Hopefully it's just angle, make-up and lighting. We don't need Mariah Carey to look like Tyra Banks; just to look like herself, with whatever that comes with in 2022.

No I don't want her to retire. I think you misunderstood what I wrote/meant. I miss real musicians, a real band not just only beats. It has nothing to do with fantasy, it's a matter of taste nothing more. I like "Caution" too but it's not my favourite. If you love "Caution" that's cool. I'm still happy with "The Rarities" and maybe one can hope for a Rarities Part two.

I never said anything derogatory a out her post-90s output. In fact I agree, Caution is a great album. My issue is that she still happily pretends to be "The Voice", when she isn't. As you've said, her voice has changed. Nobody's voice in the industry has ever declined as rapidly as Mariah's has. Whether that was bad technique, bad choices, over singing, over working, or Michael Jackson's casket, we'll never know. Because she will never address it. Just shatter the illusion already and be honest.

I believe with Pharrell, Dev Hynes and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis she can create again the magic of TEOM. Her voice wasn't in the best state then, but she had some great producers who gave MC hot tracks to sing over. It is probably good that she wait to release MC16 in 2023 when she can better position her music for radio airplay. Just my two cents today.

I don't believe I said I wanted 90s style runs or indeed music. I clearly stated that I think Mariah needs to keep it simple and stop chasing trends. If you think Caution is truly great, then good for you, but the general public and most fans alike don't agree, as proven by the sales. If most people can see what is glaringly obvious, but a small few cannot, then I'm afraid it isn't us who are out of touch. A 52 year old writing, producing and stylising music akin to that of a 20 year old is not a good look. What I want from Mariah is authenticity, and Caution is anything but that. I also believe Mariah was under Roc Nation at that time of promoting Caution, and I strongly suspect most of the album's promotional budget was spent buying positive reviews, something Roc Nation are known for. There is no way on earth that Caution can by any measurable standard be considered better than Butterfly, Daydream, TEOM, or indeed any other Mariah album, just because it was supposedly well received by critics. It's easily her worst album. There's a reason the late night version of WBT was so well received by fans. It was mature, sophisticated, and sexy, all at the same time. Something we haven't seen for a while. A few tracks of original material written in that vein would not go amiss.

Thank you MusicfanJ, I'm glad you understand my point of view and see where I'm coming from. I want to see Mariah succeed so bad, pull a Cher moment or even something bigger, in this social media time we live in (I was one of those who discovered Cher from "Believe" that record was so impactful for her, she gained new fans and recognition). If anything else for the new Lambs that have never experienced an era where she was inescapably on top. But instead she's being reduced to a one trick pony that happens only at Christmas (you've seen those memes of Mariah Carey defrosting after Thanksgiving lol). After such a stellar career, the "Queen of Christmas" title (which I love and not complaining about at all) should be just one of the different facets of the artist she is, an all round music genius in a league of her own.

I seriously think some of you are living in fantasy land and there is no bringing you back to reality. The Voice is not on Caution, because The Voice has changed. It's not the same. What is not clicking? Your idea of the voice is the 90s, so obviously it won't be the same. It's not better or worse, it's different. Things change in 30 years. Some of us were infants when Butterfly was released. Mariah isn't immune to nature's changes, and she's making music now to complement those changes. And I, as well as many others, like those changes, because I don't live in fantasy land. I appreciate her efforts precisely because she is not just the voice, she is many things. PS She'll be awarded a hall of fame tomorrow and I guarantee she'd be the happiest in her career tomorrow because in case you missed the memo, she happens to be an incredibly gifted songwriter as well not just the voice that you put her in the-voice-box.
If its up to you she can recreate the magic of the 90s in imaginary-land studios because that aint happening. It. Will. Never. Happen. So I guess if its up to you, she should retire? If its up to me, she can make more of Caution, and I will be very very happy, because it is a vessel for new fans to discover her older albums and allow her to continue sharing her many creative gifts. Very few artists puts out an excellent album like Caution 30 years into their career with that kind of craft. Yet some of you just slept on it because she isn't screeching on every song like she did 30 years ago. How inane.

I 100 % agree with everything you said Terna. Love your post.
"Caution", while being a very good record, was vocally not a "Mariah Carey" album. This is so true as well. A Mariah Carey record is something different. "Caution" is fun and nice to listen to but her trademark was missing.
MC could do a "Butterfly Part two" with real musicians and real back-up singers, if she wants to. Even if she hasn't the voice from her power years anymore, she is still Mariah Carey and can create magic with music and lyrics.
An album with RnB, Jazz elements, Retro Soul and yes a fun Pop song would be a great mixture. She is a legend because of the power voice songs and the typical Mariah melodies. She was already a legend at age 26, that's very special and unique. MC is unique on every way and I mean that only positive. Everyone can work with a "hot" producer but no one can do a Mariah Carey album. She's on another league. That's why a lot of people have high expectations' on her. Yes, she broke all records and can do only songs with JD or 5 songs with new rappers, but she could also release a new masterpiece.

There's a big difference between a creative peak and a vocal peak. The problem is that Mariah is touted as, and doesn't ever correct anybody, when she is hailed as one of the greatest voices of a generation. She doesn't say "Actually that was only for 6 years of my 30 year career." So, either address the vocal decline honestly and stop lip syncing your way through your concerts, or take due care of your voice (meaning no alcohol or marijuana - no amount of humidifiers will correct the damage those two substances do to vocal chords) and provide your fanbase and the public with what they expect from you. You can't have it both ways.

I agree and disagree with you. Her voice was not in great shape when she recorded Caution. I believe that she has said so herself. But, I don't think the heart and soul of her artistry is reducible to either 1) the current state of her instrument as such or 2) a never-ending balancing act between the preferences of former fans who won't go away but pine for the sounds she made a quarter of a century ago combined, somehow, with whatever is left of she would like to pursue in this actual millennia. I think she should completely ignore everyone's expectations at this point. If a fan in 2022 literally does not want Mariah Carey to do Mariah Carey without any external influence other than what she chooses, then it is not quite clear to me what it means to respect an actual artist. Let us not forget that some fans still think the hip-hop elements from the very beginning of her career are merely race-baiting marketing ploys on her part while our Long Island girl is somehow most truly the grown woman in pigtails running through fields of flowers in cut-off denim shorts. For real. I get the feeling a lot of Mariah Carey fans only appreciate her to the extent that her star shines in someone else's sky and lends her light to retail consumers who want to be vindicated through Mariah Carey's good press in the eyes their own peers. That strikes me as an odd way to be a fan of an artist who's been in the game since the presidency of George H. W Bush. That kind of fan/artist relationship, as far as I can see, is a commodity as fetish relationship that doesn't quite do justice to the kind of artist Mariah Carey has always been becoming. Obviously, Mariah Carey wants to do business. But at this point in her career, it simply makes no sense to try to please anyone but her own creative urges. I'm always going to be down for her-doing-her much more than Mariah straddling the fence on every other track in the hopes that fans of Hero, Always be my Baby, and Forever will grant her enough forbearance to stop painting by numbers. I mean, think about it: if Mariah Carey said, once and for all, "screw it all, I am simply going to make the album that I want to hear," do you think you'd love it and look forward to more, or hate and it and hope a woman in her 50s reverts to being preoccupied with market trends and Billboard stats in the fourth decade of an already world historical career? That how I see it.

I agree but LA Reid told her seven years ago in 2015 that he believes Mariah is no longer viable on the charts. So I doubt she'll ever get a proper deal or industry leader helping guide her again. She calls it the corporate morgue for a reason. This year we are only getting Christmas stuff, just like last. It's the last thing she has and lucky she does. Tommy was a genius. My only complaint is a young artist, Latto believed in Mariah so much that she let her share her song with her. And Mariah squandered it all away by acting like it was no big deal. It might reveal itself to be the last chance she had to do anything meaningful on the charts.

We hold Mariah to high standards because that's just the kinda of artist she is, and we know what she is capable of. "Caution", while being a very good record, was vocally not a "Mariah Carey" album. And yes I am referring to "The Voice" it's nowhere on Caution. That's what people want to hear, heck that's what I (all caps) want to hear. There should be a balance between what Mariah wants to put out and what us fans are willing to spend our hard earned money (all caps) on, that's the reason "Butterfly" worked in a massive way. She gained new fans but did not alienate the old ones. I've noticed her best years were her marketed years when she was under supervision, even "The Emancipation of Mimi" her big comeback was guided by L.A Reid, an executive with experience and successful track record with other artists. The labels know what sells and what people want to hear and delivered and she delivered, quality music as well, while still sticking to her roots and the kind of music she loves – R&B/Hip-hop. You cannot and I repeat cannot compare an album like "Rainbow" to "Butterfly", the difference is clear as day.

Yes to this. I love her Caution era vocals, I saw her Caution World Tour show and she sounded amazing. I played that album over and over again for months when it first came out. I hadn't done that since Memoirs.
Many lambs recognize that Mariah's voice sounds different on each of her albums, I think the points that you made alluded to this. Her voice is her instrument, she always says this. It's like she's learning a new instrument (or new way to use it) every few years. She'll always be an artist and songwriter first.
I absolutely loved Mimi's Valentine's Day Mix, Fall in Love At Christmas, The Roof with Brandy, and all of her home concerts over the last couple of years. Her energy, enthusiasm, and her creativity has been so exciting to witness in the 2020's so far. And I'm sorry, Lullaby of Birdland is a huge standout for me on The Rarities album. I love how she sounds so effortless and comfortable in this singing style.
And I love Caution.

I completely agree with you. There are a lot of negative neurotic fans who just use "love" for Mariah Carey as an excuse to draw attention to themselves when no one would be paying much attention to them otherwise.
This is the third decade of an entirely new century and there are clowns out there who still believe the 1990s were Mariah Carey's creative peak when, in fact, she was literally just a few years into her 20s and full-time career in general. I am glad she had those early commercial successes, though.
I can acknowledge that being a 21 year old hit maker from a poor and dysfunctional family in sexist America was a dream come true. At the same time, however, those platinum years have become an albatross around the neck of a woman talented enough to be just barely coming into a mature artistic creativity right about now.
Albums like Butterfly, Rainbow, Charmbracelet, Emancipation, and Caution - not to mention utterly unique recordings like the Daydream Interlude and the entire tradition of remixes she introduced - have really brilliant material on them. On every album, her highlights definitely outshine the lesser cuts.
I know it sounds judgmental but it's true. Not everyone has good taste and not all of Mariah Carey's musical choices were her best judgment. There is simply something immature and shallow about fans - almost 30 years late - seriously pining for while being actively disappointed over the ending of the days when Mariah Carey's voice was a technical freak of nature while her lyrical content too often could have been produced by a precocious six grader, and the music itself too often suitable for sexually frustrated soccer moms and their mall-rat kids vacillating between Precious Moments and Christina Aguilera.

We unfortunately have to accept that we will never see the quality we grew accustomed to during Mariah's 1990s heyday. We've seen glimmers of it, but she's just not disciplined enough to pull off anything like did she with albums like "Butterfly" or "Emotions". She hasn't taken very good care of her voice since the late 90s/early 00s, and the lengthy recording processes for the post-Glitter albums has often not been in proportion to the quality of the finished product.
