Butterfly (102,086)
by MusicfanJ from Germany

|

Yes, should have been a number one. It was played a lot at MTV and even on the radio it was "received very well". I still have it on cassette from 97 "my rnb mixtape" self recorded from radio. The older I get the more I value Butterfly and its lyrics. It's really a masterpiece, epic song.

"Butterfly" is one of the best ballads she ever wrote. I wish Sony had commercially released it. I think it could have gone to #1 easily on the strength of the ballad version as well as "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)".

You're joking, right? At this point it's not only about the key, but about the fact that her fluidity and buttery tone are basically gone. She could try, but it would turn into another one of choppy her versions of "Hero", but the 2023 version.
I think this is the time for her start training her voice again, there are many great vocal coaches out there that would get her voice in decent shape, but that would take work. It's like going to the gym, you don't shed those extra pounds or put on some muscle if you don't move your ass.

This song is still so brilliant. By the first listen in 97 I loved this song. I think it's beside "Hero" Mariah's hymn. An emotional ballad, poetic lyrics and a beautiful, classy video. We all know that Mariah described her new free life with it and the tough relationship with Tommy. But for me the song can also be about friendship, changes, dreams and life in general. Today the people won't get a song like this again. In 97 the music and the artists from many genres were really awesome. Music will always be a mirror of the times. I miss those days.

The vocal performance award (102,083)
by BFF from United States

I think her lack of touring during that period contributed. She neglected to do a concert tour until 1993. And even when she did tour in the 1990s, the tours were very short. Whitney Houston and Celine Dion, though they did not write or produce their own records, both toured extensively. If you do not tour, how can anyone know that you have the chops to pull off a "vocal performance"? Mariah definitely did have the chops, but she and her management should have pushed for more extensive touring during the 1990-1997 period. Her decision to end the "Butterfly" tour early to pursue that silly movie role with Chris Tucker was a very frustrating choice.

I always love this song. I always have a feeling that if Mariah happen to give away Hero to Gloria Estefan (as she always tells this story) maybe Never Forget You would be chosen as the second single after Dreamlover.

It's a wrap for you baby challenge TikTok (102,080)
by Bobby A from United States

I just wish IAW could get the same radio response after all of these years as Chris Brown's Under The Influence has done from a TikTok dance video. Under The Influence is now a Top 20 Urban Hit after all of these years because of Urban radio. However, Urban radio won't do the same thing for MC because radio programmers lost interest for MC after E=MC2. It's true because she hasn't had a Urban hit since TMB. Plus, Brezzy is just hot right now because he just writes some hot Urban songs. I smell a Brezzy and MC duet this year. I know that I am going to get some backlash for thinking about that collaboration.

While you all argue over the definition of primary, joint, sole custody, 6 baby mamas, nonsense and drama, [It's a wrap] is going viral on [TikTok]. Kinds [sic] have discovered the song and made a dance to it. Someone mortified Mariah on Twitter and she even has her own [TikTok] up. What do you all think, a nice bump in streams or a possible top 10 hit a la Steve's [Lacy bad habits viral]?

Buttefly is pure poetry at its best. Sadly Mariah departed from that type of writing a long time ago. That was actually when she would her lyrics by herself. I hope she finds the confidence to write her own stuff without the need of a posse.

With my mother's recent passing, I think of her in the context of this song and sending someone you love on to the afterlife and hoping that world will embrace them and that one day we will join them again. It's a bit of a different take on the lyrics of this song and the song's original meaning but equally fitting in many ways, especially when your loved one has gone through so much before their eventual passing.

Not only that, Roc and Roe don't act like these typical celebrity kids. Mariah and Nick have done a great job raising them so far. Love alone is not enough to hold a couple together. Nick and Marian are definitely better as friends. Nick can't keep in his pants while Mariah still can count with less than 3 fingers the guys she's slept with lol.

Why do all of these people opt into this situation knowing that Nick has children with multiple women? Have any of them heard of birth control, contraceptives, or any type of pregnancy prevention mechanism? Nick Cannon's reputation definitely precedes him, and clearly he has no interest in condoms, vasectomy, et cetera. It's not exactly news that he likes to sleep around. My guess is that many of them want to be taken care of financially.
I love Mariah, but marrying Nick was definitely a very poor decision on her part. I get that she wanted children, but someone with her financial resources could have easily done it another way. Not sure what her chances are for primary custody, but it does seem like she is the more competent parent.

The vocal performance award (102,064)
by Terna from Nigeria

One of the reasons I think Mariah lost so many "vocal performance" awards at the Grammys is the fact that most of her earlier recordings were "polished" so to speak, done in multiple takes and the best parts being used, giving her this flawless studio recording every time, especially the first half of the 90's. Yes she was always nominated (at some point Mariah was the most nominated female artist at the Grammys and most were for vocal performance) but she always lost to other females that one could hear most likely did those songs in one take. From the first album, [only] "Vision of Love" is sung in one take (the 2nd Mariah doing all that insane ad-libbing) and what do you know? She won for Pop Vocal and then again with "We Belong Together" another one take song, won best R&B vocal performance. So I do think the Grammys acknowledge singers who don't gloss their vocals. Just a thought. What do you guys think?
