Whoopi Goldberg mocks Mariah (101,899)
by Randy from USA
| |
|

I tend to agree. I don't want Mariah's legacy to be Christmas. I know I'm hard on her live performances but words can express what her music means to me. Through The Rain got me up and to work for years when I was stressed. Right to Dream was my go to when I was drunk and depressed. Outside is my being gay and ostracized in the 90s anthem. Close My Eyes is my PTSD song from being born with all the antics that come from a 15 year old mother and a 21 year old father. All I Want For Christmas is nice. But it's hardly anywhere on the soundtrack of my life. I actually listen to O Holy Night and Oh Santa more. Not because I don't like AIWFCIY, but because I know if I leave the house any time after thanksgiving, I'll hear it.

Darlene Love can have that poor and shitty "Queen of Christmas" title. I've always tought Mariah was much more that to anyone. She is the "Queen of Music". Nothing less.

Darlene can call us back when she has a #1 Christmas single that she herself wrote and two best-selling Christmas albums full of great, self-penned originals and reinterpretations of classics. I love Darlene's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", but no one can deny the staying power of Mariah's "All I Want". Love should have left it alone after they interacted with one another on social media; this segment on "The View" was really petty and unnecessary.

Whoopi Goldberg mocks Mariah (101,894)

The conscious effort to shade Mariah was thick in the air in that studio you could literally cut through it with a knife. Too [bad] Mariah is already considered "The Queen of Christmas" by this [generation] amongst many other titles – yes Whoopi she can and does have it all. Her [song] "All I want For Christmas is You" [trumps] all others I dare say past, present and future. It is that [good] a song, and isn't the album that song is from "Merry Christmas" the biggest selling Christmas album of all time? That is what qualifies her as the Queen of Christmas, she stays winning. Now everyone wants to have a magical Christmas song and album like she does. Often imitated, never duplicated.

Amen. By the way, now that you said that these days every artist wants to have a Christmas album and be as great as hers, I've just watched Kelly Clarkson's performance of "Santa Can you Hear Me" and am I the only one who clearly sees it's a copy of AIWFCIY? She has a phenomenal voice and she seems to be a very nice person, I have nothing against her. But the melody of the song, the bridge and the whole vibe is so AIWFCIY that it bothers me that only a few artists nowadays admit they are inspired by Mariah or have the guts to credit her because she's not trendy anymore. I think something happened between Kelly and Mariah because a few years ago she kept referencing Mariah a lot and she even seemed to be a "lamb" and in the last years, when she talks about her biggest inspirations she names Whitney and others but no reference to Mariah. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that they choosed Jennifer Hudson instead of her to do Oh Santa. I remember that back then there was a strong rumour that the song was going to feature Ariana and Kelly. I don't know. Maybe there's nothing wrong between them and it's just me supposing things.

So Darlene Love went to The View and after her performance they coronated her as The Queen Of Christmas and they talked about Mariah without mentioning her. I didn't like Darlene's attitude, especially since she came to terms with Mariah, and they both praised each other on Twitter a few days ago, and Darlene even proposed to Mariah if they could record the song in a diet for 2023. Mariah was very sweet to her, talking about how her rendition of Christmas Baby Please Come Home was an homage to Darlene's version of the song. And I also notice that Whoopi was kinda laughing at Mariah, and it's not the first time she does it. Here's the full video.

So nice to see footage from the Charmbracelet world tour. Through the Rain continues to grow on me this many years later. The message and lyrics are beautiful, and the fact that the song is somewhat underrated somehow make them even more so.

MSG final night (101,884)
by Timothy from USA

What can I say? I wasn't sure what to expect as I saw some of the videos from earlier in the week but Mariah rested and brought good voice Friday night.
The energy in the sold out crowd was palpable. I have been to other shows where the artist was late but thankfully this crowd was very patient as if it was almost accepted and expected because it was Mariah. Great to see some of the lambs I have seen around on the internet with their friends on the floor of the arena where we were.
Bryan is really developing into a real Desi Arnaz as he was working with the production crew behind us and explaining to someone next to him (that buff, bald security guy with the thick black glasses from the last 20 years) how she just needed rest and some focus to deliver as she was doing. He has matured and is very confident as her partner now in his strut around the arena in between moments on stage.
All considered, it was worth the money. Being a live concert junkie, I really want to stress that Mariah utilizes the same level of assistance as Celine and Beyoncé. No more or less in total live vs tracked vocals so I think that's important to note.
Looking forward to the tv special as I am sure most may be from Friday as she referenced they were recording our show as well, which is great due to the thundering applause following a few songs like Come All Ye Faithful, Oh Holy Night, My All and Fly Like A Bird.
Happy Holidays to everyone on the board.

You know what's funny. Even Eric the webmaster on this board attacked me when I said that the 2006 Grammy performance was a cut and paste job. Mariah literally sang an adlib and then the next adlib was the backing track. Watch it again. I don't think bashing MC is cool and edgy. What I really feel is that MC was the 8th wonder of the world vocally. Something happened between Tokyo 1996 and Oprah 1997. We never got any explanation. But while all these other singers who have been around belting before and after Mariah, Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, Regina Belle, Chaka Khan, are going about their business what we get to defend our diva is excuses. Her voice is different; it's sensitive, humidifiers, the ear monitor, the casket was in front of her, the air conditioning was on, the heat was on, nodules. I don't want to be right. I don't want to be the one that was right about MC's throat implosion. I'd rather her say something. One of the things I've told you guys over and over is that I live a different lifestyle than you. All of my friends are Stan's of different divas. Do you know how much ish I get as MC's representative? Recently I was given Chante Moore's performance at Soul Train and the caption said Mariah who? Would any of you, in 1995 thought Chante Moore would be able to outsing MC? MC came out in 90. Chante came out in 92. Oh wait I know. MC had to sing so much more. The nodules. The lighting. The casket. The HVAC.

Christmas wrapping (101,886)
by Bill from the UK
| |
|
|
What I will say, is that the cover of Christmas Wrapping was actually good and fits the remnants of her voice. Although it wasn't a live recording, the fact it had no melisma, no belting, no boring old whistles which frankly I'm sick of now, was refreshing and, after 25 years, something different.
If MC reinvented herself and just sang melodious tunes with no unnecessary exaggerated showmanship and fake vocal gymnastics she can't replicate live, it'd go down a storm.

Tommy wasn't good for her personal life, but his influence was really good for her professionally. She was much more disciplined and focused, and she kept herself in better shape physically and vocally. Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if they had never gotten married but kept their relationship strictly professional.

"I hope to God she's not reading these messages." I sure do hope she is reading these messages so she knows what's up - that the facade has failed and ain't nobody gonna shell out hard earned money for a wack, mediocre show, by a lazy has been diva living on her past glory, something's got to give. You hibernated all damn year (literally) and this is what she could come up with? You could see the alarm and disgust on the audience faces. Say all you want about Tommy, but he made her be disciplined and her vocal quality in those times speaks for itself. As soon as he was out of the picture, look at the hideous shot vocals we got for "Rainbow". Ship her off to Iyanla Vanzant for rehabilitation already.

I think Mariah can turn it around. Back in 2000 every one have said she lost her voice and all and her career was over. She came back stronger than ever and she was back to topping the charts. I would never count her out or bet against her. Mariah just broke records again with her Christmas song and everybody is focusing on the negative. I don't have rose colored glasses on, I see and hear the problems, if she put down the alcohol and warm up her voice and work with a voice teacher she could be back in fine form.

The casket. The HVAC.

Don't be a follower. He thinks he's being cool and edgy. Don't give in to mob mentality.

So what (101,875)

Guys, get a grip, she's alive and well, clearly. The voice might not be there but she's out and about. I hope to God she's not reading these messages. Who needs fans when she has so many critics? Be thankful for the legacy if nothing else.
