She also went on a massive gruelling tour between Daydream and Butterfly, which many signpost as her last consistent, great, and flawless performance. That said, she had a week's rest in between each stop on the European leg. By the way, I attended the London Daydream tour and it was one of the greatest spectacles I ever beheld. I took it all for granted at the time, but I am so grateful to have seen her at her absolute vocal and commercial peak.

It would've been, had I said Celine lost hers due to Anorexia, but I didn't. Denying Mariah alcohol abuse in the past is like denying Crapfinity is crap. During her pregnancy, her voice recovered a lot, and not because she was singing with six lungs.

It's one of the more refreshing ones in her line. Fresh and clean are the two words that come to mind.

Mariah's vocal decline (98,383)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|

It's a confluence of so many things. Her lifestyle, her technique, aging, individual differences, etc. - especially individual differences. I know people in their early 30s who avoid dairy, try to live clean and rest well and yet they still can't sing as well as they did 5-10 years ago. On the other hand, I also know some people who are pushing 50 who live their life to the absolute fullest, indulging in their unhealthy habits and vices frequently, and can still deliver vocally today as they did when they were in their 20s in terms of range and power, just more mature sounding and a tad less agile and fluid.
Mariah's vocal situation is unique, and I feel like that's one of the reasons that make her voice such a fascinating subject, because it does evolve with every release. Of course I would love her to still have the effortless, buttery tone she had in 1995, but I wouldn't want her to be stuck there either, as it was the grit in her more mature, older vocals that lent a stronger sense of conviction and character to many of her songs Butterfly onwards, that she would not have otherwise convincingly pulled off had she sung it with her the ostentatious, less nuanced delivery her voice allowed her to do during her first 5-6 years in the industry.

Alcohol and weed. Nobody denies that. But do you believe her vocal techniques were healthy from the beginning? I'm sure that apart from what Pat has taught her he has not had any proper vocal training. She had overstressed her vocal cords at the very beginning of her career. I'm sure that is the reason she had not toured until 1993 and all her 90s tours were rather short ones. Remember she laind in one of her interviews that she lost her voice in the late 80s, then she quitted smoking. I'm sure that is why her voice was changing from album to album in the early 90s.

That's what I mean, yes the stress could make you loose your voice (see Shania) but Mariah's was more of a damaged quality thing, drugs and alcohol wouldn't have done that so fast after his control was up. (Actually his control lasted up until [Butterfly].) It happened specifically between [Daydream] and [Butterfly]. The only thing she did in between those two was a rock album where she was seriously lashing out with her voice, to keep her sanity. We don't know how much she pushed her voice in the making of that. Maybe that is the reason she will never ever release it.

Exactly. I've always thought her voice changed in-between Daydream and Butterfly because she was no longer under Tommy's controlling hand. He controlled every aspect of her world, including the most important part, her voice. He made sure MC took care of her voice. Take away that control, free to choose, things can change. Don't misunderstand me. I am in no way defending Tommy's cruel treatment of Mariah. but when you're controlled so far one way, then freedom comes, sometimes you can swing so far the other way which also can be damaging. Regardless of this or that, I will always be grateful for the music.

The elephant in the room (98,375)
by Edward from USA

Way before the recording of Butterfly, Mariah's marriage to Tommy was over. Her voice didn't change due to stress or whatever, we all know she was out and about drinking and smoking weed. She rid herself from the tentacles of Tommy, but that same action made her fall into another trap, alcohol. Tommy with his controlling ways make sure Mariah took care of her asset, but once she set herself free, she started doing all those things she always wanted to do but wasn't allowed to. It's both their fault in a way. Mariah for wilding out of control and Tommy for suppressing her by not letting her live her life like any other young woman her age would have done. If there had been a healthy balance, we would be singing a different tune. By the time Butterfly was recorded, Mariah was, in my humble opinion, creatively at her best, she was effing Derek Jeter, he inspired some of her best work, so, stressed she wasn't, it was as if she had come out the cocoon, free, beautiful, different, exuberant, it was delightful to experience her metamorphosis, You don't make an album like Butterfly under stress. The stress came after when she to tried to leave Sony and Tommy started sabotaging her hence her nervous breakdown, but that was after Rainbow. Whitney's voice succumbed to her drug use, and Mariah's to her misrepresented splashes. It is what it is. At this point complaining or pointing fingers won't bring her voice back. Her recordings during the pandemic, in which she's at home and with complete control of everything, evidenced an unrepairable instrument. Sad, but true. I'll take another album like Caution though, I don't think she's capable of doing anything better than that, at least voicewise. I would like to be proven wrong.

Like any part of the body, you need to keep yourself and the particular vessel you utilise in top condition, just as you would a car. If you mistreat it, then you will see the consequences. An athlete cannot perform living off soda and junk food, and equally alcohol and smoke are two of the absolute worst things for a voice, both of which Mariah indulges in, some would say to excess. Yes, stress would have also been a factor, but she's not still stressed about Tommy and Columbia records 25 years later, so you have to look at the other factors. It does amaze me sometimes that so many fans overlook what is right under their noses.

Ugh I wish Mariah wouldn't continue to cheapen AIWFCIY like this. I feel like in the past few years she's over saturating the market with AIWFCIY themed stuff and that could put people off. That song is a giant on its own, Mariah please let it be. I mean if she needs to money I guess I understand but I don't think she does do stop dahlin' please.

American Idol performance (98,370)
by Bobby A from United States

How many of you remember MC's medley performance on American Idol when she hosted that season? I thought that was the worst live performance of her career besides the infamous New Year's performance. She looked so tense and nervous during the whole performance. I cringed on the sofa during the performance. I have noticed that this only happens when MC is performing in front of her peers and a mostly studio audience who are not Lambs. And having Nicki Minaj stare at you from the judge's table only made matters worse. MC had to be stressed during the recording of Butterfly and Daydream because of Tommy's cruel treatment.

That's an interesting point Hilton. The change was clearly between Butterfly and Daydream. I believe because of severeal reasons, most have been discussed here. But you're right, maybe the hidden rock singing style was too much for her unique, soulful voice.

He's never "made his own way". Also even if what you say is true (that it's damaged his "career", whatever that is), truth is a defense to defamation claims. Guess we'll see how his lawsuit does.

Potato, patata. I'm not trying to whitewash Morgan or Alison. These people need to grow up and rely on themselves. Whatever Morgan says, there's always Shawn as a proof how caring and generous Mariah is to her family.

Her voice changed around Daydream/SUD, I believe it was due to stress from Sony/Tommy situation. I feel so sad for her whenever I see the 1996 Grammy footage, where Mariah sits in the audience in the white dress next to Tommy and Walter.

He found it difficult to make it before the book, and with all his failed ventures that Mimi endorsed or financed in years prior. It's on him. He's old enough to collect social security, but he probably didn't put in enough work years to be entitled to anything. He's been selling tabloid stories for years because he's petty and broke it seems. He would have to prove he lost any deals or opportunities post the book's release, not just his opinions. Allison also accused him of being violent in childhood. He hasn't mentioned her since their first attempts to blackmail Mimi failed. Anyhow, as I said before, he may get a settlement just to finally shut him up. The only other reason to settle with him is for him to keep her name out of his mouth as he ignored all his previous tabloid threats and drama. Onward.

Someones Ugly Daughter's voice (98,363)
by T from USA
| |
|
|
As has been cited many times by fans and music critics alike, Mariah's voice changed somewhere in between the [Daydream] and [Butterfly] albums. I have heard theories that the gruelling non stop singing live on the [Daydream] tour did it. But what if her voice change was due to secretly recording SUD at the same time? What if she over did it, or the rock style of singing did something to her chords? Something to ponder.
