Jonas Kaufmann (96,834)
by Geri551 from UK
| |
|
|
Jonas Kaufmann, the world's most popular living tenor, is the latest performer to record All I Want For Christmas Is You for his new Christmas album. It's an interesting rendition, by no means my favourite version, but it is a testament to the extraordinary genre crossing impact of this song.
I know Mariah can't really see beyond or function outside of the R&B/Hip Hop world that is her comfort zone, but as she and her team explore further ways to exploit this song and cement her legacy and cross genre appeal in the years to come (especially in a huge market like Germany and Central Europe where Kaufmann is a huge star on a par if not surpassing Mariah), some form of collaboration may be an interesting idea.
I'd love Mariah to do a concert like the Christmas in Vienna special that Diana Ross did in the 90s, recasting her Christmas albums in a live setting with an orchestra.

High note harmonies (96,833)
by Terna from Nigeria

Sounds kinda catchy doesn't it? Lol. Anyways, this new version of "Oh Santa" has become my favorite and that's saying a lot because I love (all caps) the original version from 2010. The new solo high note run Mariah does on this version is just sheer power, and those harmonies with Ariana just wow. Who is singing what on that harmonized section though they sound so identical.

The queen of Christmas reigns again. The special is pure perfection. And Oh Santa is just what I needed yesterday.

New recordings - Ariana bores me (96,831)
by Geronimo from USA
| |
|

I really enjoyed the medley, even though Hero is far from my favorite song. I'm really appreciating her approach to texture and timing toward the end. "Oh Santa" is a pretty trite song, in my opinion. I'm glad Jennifer Hudson figured out how to slow the melody down just to give some shape to a melody on the verse. But that song really highlights how boring a singer Ariana Grande is - not because I don't think she can do "more" on a track of her own, but because outside of her discount version of Mariah idiosyncrasies, she just doesn't have much to offer except professional skill.

Yup, that whistle on the original version has always bugged me. As for Ari's vocals, to be fair, if you listened to her last 3 albums, especially her most recent one, she has adopted an overall softer approach to singing (probably for vocal preservation). That hushed, close-to-the-mic vocal made up about 80% of Positions. Yes, she may have been instructed to sing softly for Oh Santa., but she did hear the original, so that alone should have given her a good idea of just how lively she should have done things. Plus, even if she has a powerful, agile belted voice, by nature it just doesn't have the same heft and natural volume that Mariah's voice has, let alone JHud's.

Exactly. Considering how much many dreaded this to be a cut and paste version of Mariah's 2010 vocals with a little Jennifer and Ariana added in, what we actually got is a huge relief. Oh Santa has always felt like a girl group track and I believe that it does manage to sound like that with this new version.

Magical Christmas (96,828)
by Jono from USA
| |
|
|
I guess all the memes and jokes about Mariah Carey "defrosting" every December to collect her yearly check is true, considering this is the most she's moved in years. In all seriousness, this was a cute and fun special, and just the right amount of camp. Loved that she reworked the songs so we weren't just getting rehashed vocals. "Sleigh Ride" was absolutely fabulous. Wished the overall special was a little longer as the storyline felt a little rushed, but I'm assuming the pandemic restricted what could be done. After a long and challenging year, having this sort of escapism was nice.

Mariah has made my Christmas (96,827)

The special was adorable start to finish. The camp was so much fun. If you can't be silly at Christmas there's something wrong. Mariah poked fun at herself and it was great. I've never watched an Apple production I have not been impressed with. This is top notch. I love the Oh Santa remix. I understand some won't like it, but I truly feel it was well done by all. J Hud brought her style. The Supremes thing is cute. Those whistle notes being in harmony were such a nice display of mutual respect. Life is short, enjoy it. Merry Christmas everyone.

Considering there wasn't much to do with "Oh Santa" in terms of adding two other artists to the mix, I'm pleasantly surprised. I actually enjoy it. Hopefully Mariah can return the favor to Ariana and engage in a proper duet with her.

Oh Santa! collab (96,822)

I know some will nit pick this and that. Totally fine and their choice. I know I've done my fair share over the years. This time, I'll leave that job to those who want to. For me, I'll just say this: I liked it. It was festive. Mariah and Ariana harmonizing their whistle was a nice nod of respect toward each other. The new vocals were great. J-Hud sounded great. It all worked. I'm just gonna enjoy this moment and have some egg nog. Merry Christmas everyone.

The harmonized whistle (96,817)
by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
| |
|
|
This rare phenomenon has taken on a life of its own. Both artists have not ever harmonized in the whistle register with anyone else but themselves until this track. Social media is blowing up. It really appears to be a pop culture event. The amount of reaction videos on YouTube dedicated to this song, particularly this vocal moment, is quite staggering and the song hasn't been out for too long yet. Now whether all of that translates to actual chart success is still to be seen. But it would be nice to see Mariah tie with the Beatles for that record; it would be Ariana's sixth overall (fourth for this year) and Jennifer Hudson's first. They all deserve it. The song deserves it.

I think Ariana called herself holding back out of respect, but it was totally unnecessary. I do wish she would've let loose a little more and had more fun with the song/brought her A game like she did on Bang Bang. It would've been perfectly fine. Her belt towards the climax was cute though and more of what I wanted from her contribution. Now I loved Jennifer's contribution to the song, I thought she executed it perfectly and added a nice gospel soul flair to it. All and all it was a sweet moment and I thought it very big and humble of MC to share a whistling moment with Ariana. I adored it, a very full circle stamp of love and approval moment.

I love this version of the song. I always felt like Mariah was almost a combination of Ariana and JHud, but better. What I mean is, Ariana has a beautiful tone, but less power in her voice. JHud has a less appealing tone, but more power in her voice. And Mariah has both a beautiful tone and power, more so than them, especially in her younger years. Overall, I actually think this version is better than the original. I enjoyed watching the video and seeing them all united.

While they don't have any photos together there is one scene where Mariah puts her hand on Jennifer's shoulder and then where Mariah and Ariana is harmonising they are looking directly at each other and Ariana is proper beaming at her with pride. These scenes make it look like they atleast shot those together for sure. Either that or that's some real good editing

I feel like she looked absolutely stunning in that outfit. How many times has she been dragged for wearing the same long gown because she always does it. Mariah is 50 but looking 35, she's feeling herself and her body, I love it. That dress is snatched, perfect amount of legs, cleavage and hugging her curves perfectly. Also this is a fun sing and dance upbeat song, a gown would absolutely not go with the vibe. I loved the version (I enjoy the original version too) but this one has the dimensions of having 3 different vocal styles on it.

Mariah's in front because it's supposed to be Supremes like. She's the Diana. Well, she wrote the song, it's her special, etc. I also liked the Sleigh Bell part. So camp and fun. Also respect that she's owning her vocals. She's not trying to make it perfect in every song. In my opinion, some song's vocals were better than others. All I Want for Christmas Is You was great. But I keep listening to Oh Santa! I hope it is a hit. Certainly has gotten more views quickly on YouTube than some of her other songs lately.
