I went to bed early so I could wake up and download the album at 12.15 am. Listen to 2 songs went to bed and got up for work at 5am. Then had my work sound system for 2 hours. I love it, it's so good and can't wait to learn every song word for word. Book arrived too and 70 pages in and enjoying it so far.

The Rarities must be singles (95,921)
by Lainsky from Philippines

Out Here On My Own remains a best choice for a single before this album came out. I still hope this will become a Top 10 if not #1 - kind of unlikely but who knows. Mesmerized has that relevance and catchy tune that can make people feel the last song syndrome, which makes it a good follow-up single. I wonder what could happen if this was included and released as the carrier single for MIAMTEC. Cool On You also can be released as a single. Like Mesmerized, I love the sound and it has that retaining tune to listeners. So, she could go either of these two or both. Can You Hear Me or I Pray are both beautiful ballads that tells you exactly what era where she recorded it. For commercial release, I would go for the former and promo for the latter. They are both divine with different message. Yes, I am still wishing and praying and dreaming to see Mariah back at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and 200 chart. At this point of her career, this could be phenomenally historical and record-breaking. Well, regardless, I am grateful for these old new music from her. Timeless.

Love love loved the book (and of course now "The Rarities"), but does anyone have any insight on how TMOMC is selling? I hope that it does well. #1 New York Times Bestseller, for sure.

The Rarities (95,919)

I was bummed for a while because my preordered memoir was scheduled to get here on the 6th, but as I rushed home last night to unwind and prepare for the release of The Rarities at the strike of midnight; without looking down I literally tripped over a box on my door step as I opened the door. It was like a dream come true "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" arriving right before The Rarities dropped; right in time for the weekend what more could I ask for. *praise hands* Okay so to the album. The favorites upon first listen: 1) Cool On You - Had me so hype, the vibe, the lyrics, the production is everything I wanted and the gem needed when I want someone to "kick rocks". 2) Loverboy Firecracker - Definitely would've hit much harder than the Cameo/Candy version: the beat is more hip/ hop, the vocals pop more, those harmonies at the beginning and end rivals Fantasy. While I do agree the production could've been a lil softer and some parts could've been a little less busy, all and all it still would've been a stronger lead single and went straight to number 1. 3) Here We Go Around Again - When I first heard the snippet I thought it sound really dated too, but in true Mariah fashion it grew on me by time the album dropped. I love it now very "feel good" Jackson 5 vibes that should've made the cut on the first album. It's the perfect opener for this album. 4) Mesmerized - Will be added to my Mariah jazz compilation along with: The Wind, Subtle Invitation, and Lullaby To Birdland. We really need Jazzriah in our lives already.
I loved One Night, Out Here On My Own, I Pray, as well and of course the classic b-sides we've been loving for years now.
I think Can You Hear Me will grow on me a lil more just like Save The Day has grown on me. It was a very raw ballad which I do like, but may be too raw for the vibe of the Emotions album we got. The only song that didn't feel like an MC song to me was "All I Live For". It sounds very much commercial/ mainstream, Jimmy Jam Terry Lewis meets Babyface easy listening mid early 90s R&Bish. As if she wrote it for someone else it sounds: it gave me something Karyn White, Toni Braxton, or even Tevin Campbell probably would've sung during that period, it just didn't have that unique Mariah musical identity on it for me. It'll most likely grow on me more when added to a playlist though. It's good background music like of you're when you're cleaning the house or at a salon or something. Lol. Okay that was a tangent.

The Rarities (95,918)

Currently playing this magnificent gift from Mariah Carey and I can honestly say I love all (all caps) the songs. Hashtag "Justice For Loverboy" is already a thing on social media. Lol. The original Firecracker version has this bounce that unfortunately the Candy version kinda lacks. Certain tracks stood out to me more than others as they were instant favorites. 1. "Can You Hear Me" - Something about Mariah singing with effort that's so satisfying to listen to. I Love love this one. 2. "Mesmerized" - This reminds me strongly of Meteorite but more 70's like a soundtrack of "Saturday night fever" and those hidden high notes are a plus, caution this one's an ear worm. Lol. 3. "Cool On You" - Loved this easily, reminiscent of the "Lil' Love" song she did with Bone thugs in 2007 as well. Thank goodness Jermaine is mute on this one seeing as his team produced this song. 4. "I Pray" - The message of this song still stands strong even today. 5. "Loverboy" - Screw you "Tommy Mozzarella". Lol. This would've without a doubt hit number 1 back in 2001 and he knew it. It's such a bop. 6. All I Live For - Takes me back to the "Music box" era, powerful smooth vocals and catchy haunting melody so 90's. I'm glad we also get to have high quality versions now of "Slipping Away", "Do you think of me" and "Everything Fades Away". Thank You Mariah this is a gem right here.

Firelover Crackerboy (95,917)

The original Loverboy is abso-friggin-lutely a brilliant brilliant brilliant brilliant song. It's happy and bouncy, has great momentum and feels like an event.
Honestly, this is genius. She should have stuck to her guns and used this version. I love love love it. Loverboy [now] belongs in the same list as Emotions, Dreamlover, Fantasy, Honey and Heartbreaker.

Mesmerized / Loverboy (95,916)
by bliss! from Brazil

The chorus of "Mesmerize" features vocal layers with the same melody as the "Loverboy" ones. "I want him, I want him, I need him, I need him, I love him, I love him" is very similar to "tell me that you want it, you want it, you want it". By the way, "Mesmerized" would sound great with a live band.
"Loverboy (Firecracker)" is growing on me, I definitely understand why she was so angry about the sabotage. The sample is simply magical, innovative and would bring a whole new flavor to Mariah's body of work. However, I still don't know if its superior to the Cameo one. The vocals are better, but I think the sample could've been used in a softer way (lower in volume throughout the song) like on J.Lo's "I'm real" (I hope MC doesn't read this forum though).

The Rarities (95,915)

Currently listening to [The Rarities] honestly I will appreciate Mariah for her contributions to industry as a singer, songwriter, and producer. Honestly the earlier stages of Mariah's career [were] more of what the powers that be wanted as far as an artist. While the package brought great success it stifled the artist who Mariah actually is. Songs like [Cool on you], [I pray], [...] and even Close my eyes are the true representation of Mariah and the artist she always wanted to be. However I need [Cool on you] to be released at some point. Overall I really enjoyed what The Rarities offered. Thank you MC for what you have done for us with MC30 it is greatly appreciated.

Love the album. Haven't gotten to the Tokyo Dome concert yet but the highlights for me that I've had on repeat (other than OHOMO) are:
1. Loverboy (Firecracker version) 2. Cool on you 3. Can you hear me
Lullaby of Birdland is lovely, I'm not getting into Mesmerized yet - probably once I've worn the others out.
Who knew a track from the Glitter debacle era would be the strongest track from all the eras represented. OHOMO is the crowning glory of this album for me - but we love everybody.

Thoughts after first listen to "The Rarities" (95,912)
by BFF from United States

I was not very impressed with the tracks included from the 1990-1995 period, save for the b-sides "Everything Fades Away", "Slipping Away", and "Do You Think of Me". The highlights were songs on the second part of the album: "Out Here on My Own", "Loverboy", "I Pray", "Cool On You", "Mesmerized". and "Lullaby of Birdland". Mariah sounds less creatively stifled and more joyful on every single one of these tracks in comparison to songs like "Can You Hear Me", "All I Live For", and "One Night". This goes back to my initial reaction to the track listing. I wish that Mariah had included more songs from the post-1997 period. And my goodness, the original version of "Loverboy" is just so fantastically bouncy, campy, and fun. Hearing this just makes me even more furious at Jennifer Lopez, Tommy Mottolla, Irv Gotti, Ja Rule, and everyone else who participated in the "All That Glitters" sabotage.

The "Firecracker" original version is really, really good and 1000x better than the re-recorded version. The vocals are way better. The "Firecracker" sample and production give it a bounce and energy that the released version lacked. I think this version would have received a much better critical and commercial response. This is yet another glimpse into what "All That Glitters" could have been without the sabotage.

Hypnotized (95,910)
by HoneyLamb from Germany

Am I the only one who is a bit sad that she teased us with Hypnotized back then, and it's not part of The Rarities album now? The album itself is wonderful, even though I feel that some of these unreleased songs are a bit weaker than songs from their respective albums and that's why they were not part of them back then. Still thankful to finally hear them as they give us a bigger picture.

Loverboy Firecracker version (95,908)
by Terna from Nigeria

I love it. It's very different to the Candy version, sparse in production and more vocally driven. I would say it does actually go well with the movie, could totally hear this played in the film, it's giving me "fame" vibes actually. I can see why Mariah was peeved. Lol. Honestly I appreciate the two of them. I would be bopping to this for a long while.

Oh wow. What an album. I am floored, and to hear "new" songs from 90s Mariah was quite an emotional ride for me. I love all the songs, but Lord in heaven how on earth did Mesmerized not make it onto Me I Am Mariah? That song is probably the highlight for me. I will come back later with my track by track review. Apologies in advance lol.
What a week this has been. What a week. Thank you Mariah so much, for everything.

Oh I would never kick [Just to hold you once again] off [Music box]. It's beautiful. I still think [Everything fades away] is a melancholic masterpiece. I had high hopes that you can hear me on first few bars but it never really goes anywhere. Gonna listen to the rest in more depth tomorrow. Loverboy Firecracker I'm not sold on, vocals defo better but I can't see that it would have done any better at rescuing [Glitter] back in the day. Great to have some more tracks as always but would have liked some more 90's power ballads.

For some reason, Here We Go Around Again sounds to me like it was inspired sonically by Whitney's How Will I Know in a good way, in the best way. But now that you mention the sitcom thing. You are spot on.

Here We go Around Again doesn't sound like Mariah song at all to me. It reminds me 80s sitcom theme. I like it, but the chorus seems unfinished, it's not catchy enough. All I live For reminds me Photograph of Mary from Trey's fitst album. Mesmerised sounds like a Stevie Wonder song to me. Why wasn't it on Me. I Am? I like Firecracker Loverboy more than the Candy version. Can we call The Rarities a cohesive body of work?

My copy arrived in the mail today. This album is so hot. Cool On You needs to be a single now. Mariah must have recorded I Pray at 7am in the morning. She sounds so good. I have never heard her sing like this before. There is a different texture to her voice than we have heard before. There is not one bad song on this album. The ending on I Don't Wanna Cry by the Price Sisters and Melonie Daniels is marvelous. I want my vinyl version now.

I'm loving The Rarities. My favorites are [Out here on my own], [All I live for], Mesmerized and [Here we go around again]. I'm not counting [Everything fades away], [Slipping away] and [Do you think of me] because I already have them. Loverboy is better than the album version (to me) but still isn't a really great song like Fantasy or Heartbreaker.
