Relevancy (96,319)
by We are lambily from USA
| |
|
|
"Mariah isn't relevant anymore."
Mariah is in the top 3 most streamed artists who debuted before the 00s. And if we add those Christmas streams she does something we call social distancing on those lists.
Her book has now sold over 500k copies in two weeks.
People still clearly care about her and her music. It's not Mariah's fault that the media has painted a false image of her for years now. I will never forget that episode of Wendy where she spoke on how she has been in the business for as long as Mariah and has never heard someone call her a mean person.
Let's not act as if sexism isn't the foundation for more than 75% of her criticism. Men just don't like seeing powerful unapologetic women like Mariah. They love puppies they can control.

You are missing the point. It has moved past "Mariah's own truths" to potentially "Mariah's false representations". But like Bill and others, you could probably be smacked around the head with actual truths or outright facts or reasonable assumptions based on the balance of probabilities and you wouldn't care.

How interesting: because *you* don't want to read articles that are less than complimentary about Mariah, you would like it so that *nobody* here can read such articles.
So, you think yourself the person qualified enough to be my censor? You alone (or, maybe, not) can determine what I can and cannot read. What makes you so qualified?
Be silent and still.

Who cares how relevant Mariah is now? Her real fans know her and that's all that matters. Nobody stays current forever. People will continue to discover her music when she was in her prime. That excitement of hearing her voice for the first time will still happen for people who haven't discovered her yet. I don't care about the charts or what other people think about her, or what they think about the fact that I like her. She has impacted me in ways that I can't begin to express in words.

Let's get back to being fans (96,312)
by Johnny from Ireland

Hi all. Reading a lot of comments here lately and I rarely get involved in debates. That said, I have to offer my opinion here. I've been a Mariah fan for a long time and decline to refer to myself as a lamb (no disrespect). We're all here for the love of Mariah's music and as a fan, I wish only the best for her. We're living in a world where such judgement and criticism is so freely distributed and we're in a time where everyone feels the need to voice their opinion whether it's based on fact, consequence or general thought. Who are we to judge anyone's story when we weren't there? My truth or yours is different in the eyes of those around us. I doubt any of us were in or around Mariah's presence during those moments articulated in her memoir. Those moments made her who she is today and I am pretty sure she acknowledges her own role in every scenario and situation. And indeed is filled with regret as most people are with past situations. The memoir was not supposed to be a confession. Let those mentioned in the book speak if they need to. Why get caught up in theorizing things we can't understand when we weren't there? I do feel sorry that she had to go through the race trauma but everyone has their own identity struggles in life. Hers was race what's ours? Life's too short to focus on other people's stories. Enjoy the music guys and Mariah as a person even though we don't know her really but I certainly enjoy her witty and creative personality. Peace out peeps.

Article: Mariah Carey's very good, very bad two weeks (96,311)

I know you try to post all news about Mariah Carey without filtering out the bad stuff, which I appreciate. But Showbiz411 has such a clear bias against and vendetta toward Mariah that seeing trash like this posted here makes me want to come back less and less. I still love your site, but when something is such vindictive trash, I wish it didn't get re-posted here.

Review of the memoir and The Rarities (96,310)

Hi fellow Lambs. What an amazing string of gifts Mariah has given us over the past three months. In my latest article, I dive into #MC30, review the memoir, do a track by track analysis of "The Rarities", and speculate on what it all means and what's next. Check it out.

Cheer up. Mariah Carey has a great career. You can't measure a person's legacy by current popularity. That's literally the opposite of what a legacy is.
At the same time, though, what we fans post online is part of her perceived legacy. We don't need to care that much about what other people are doing and saying about her. We just look at ourselves and see what role we are playing in naming and documenting her legacy out of our experience of her - not how we feel about other people's opinions.

I warned of this for years. Mariah's behaviour and attitude made people turn away from her. It is not remotely fashionable to say you like Mariah Carey. She is viewed as a spoiled, vain, petty bitch. Ask random people what they think of her. "Ugh, her," is somewhat of a common response. "I can't stand that woman."

Um I think you need to relax as you are catastrophising. If Mariah never gets another stream, sells another ticket or album, she has made more money than anyone of us could ever imagine and will continue to do so for the remainder of her life.
She will continue to hit the charts every year for as long as Christmas is celebrated, which is nothing to sniff your nose at. Her legacy will be remembered and celebrated by her fans and the dozens of vocalists who came after her who have publicly named her as their inspiration.
Mariah has never been a particularly hugely popular live performer, even her short Music Box tour in 1993 did not sell out. That is a consequence of the fact that she is not a natural live performer and she never developed a reputation as a live touring act.
You seem to dislike Mariah the person and want her to become something she isn't, so just enjoy the music. If others don't like it that's their decision, nothing you can do about it.

The aftermath (96,305)
by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
| |
|

I see that the message board has been in shambles since the release of the memoir. While everyone is entitled to their opinion some people have been spreading more hate than love. Personally I feel like you do not have to like what MC has decided to share in The Meaning of Mariah Carey but to degrade her, or anyone who is appreciative, and respectful of her story is not cool at all. Again her memoir was her story to tell, and whatever shall be the aftermath is something MC has to deal with. Just my opinion.

It doesn't have anything to do with werewolf or twilight type stuff. I'm not into that either. It's Sci Fi. The title does give that impression though. A human give two androids 6 embryos to go to a far off planet to raise them to be atheists as he felt believers destroyed their world. One of the Androids is... special. It gets good when a ship of believers arrive and some spiritual stuff starts to happen where the atheists start to question their non faith. The one Android is no joke.

The future is not looking good (96,302)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
| |
|
|
I was a bit devastated to se how low The Rarities charted, and it seems like Mariah is not capable of selling new music anymore, or make an impact at all. There are other legendary artists who can just put an album out and it goes to #1 just because of their reputation. I think Mariah's reputation is to blame. She is now just looked at as the Queen of Christmas, and it seems like her catalogue is getting forgotten. And the only reason people listen to AIWFCIY and her other Christmas songs is because they love the songs, not the artist behind them. After Christmas most people don't care about Mariah anymore, and they get back to thinking of her as an overly sexualized demanding difficult diva.
I think the biggest sign of her fading legacy is Mariah not being able to sell tickets to her tours and live shows. Her tour has an attendance of 2-3000 per show, that is almost ridiculous compared to other greats like Celina Dion, Madonna, Britney Spears, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Pink etc.
I read somewhere that Katy Perry is today's Mariah Carey, having plenty of hits and millions of albums sold, but haven't managed the cultural impact of other big artist, and have lost respect in the general public, thus fading away slowly until one day there is no more.
It's a terrifying thought that Mariah's music, besides AIWFCIY, is going to be forgotten, just because of Mariah's image and persona. I don't mind Mariah being a diva, but I do believe what made people lose respect is her image from Rainbow and onwards. Mariah became all about them boobs, she wanted to flash them as often as possible, and when people get the notion that you care more about looking sexy, cheesy sexy that is, they lose interest.
I sometimes think about what if Mariah died today, God forbid she did, would that make a cultural inpact as when Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Prince? Would her albums and singles sell so much that they recharted?
I know, you shouldn't think about this stuff, but I do. I'm worried Mariah's legacy is slowly slipping away, because you never sse her albums on iTunes 200 albums charts like so many of other legendary artist, and you won't find her on iTunes top 100 rnb songs like many of Whitney Houston's songs or Tina Turner or Alicia Keys.
Mariah has given me so much pleasure during my lifetime, I absolutely love her back catalogue, I listen to her every day, she has so many great songs and her talent is, or was, out of this world. I worry about her future, because I want young people to discover her music, experience the feelings I have had. My worst fear is she is fading away, everything fades away.
Have to listen to Always Be My Baby now.

Have you guys heard this? A friend linked me to a SoundCloud upload of the full song (which I'm not sure I can share here?)
