Re: Charmbracelet (93,945) (93,949) by Bill from the UK
We all have different tastes and several members on this board have a special allegiance to Charmbracelet, much as others do to her other albums. I don't really cast any of Mariah's albums as "the best" or "the worst". I play some more than others of course, but at times I can go weeks playing one album and its remixes only, and fully be back in that "era". It depends on my mood most times, and Charmbracelet definitely has a mood and a time and place for it to be played. Daydream and Music Box, both filled to the brim with her biggest hits, are easy to pick up and play through. Charmbracelet is a longer album, with a polarising vocal approach, and home to one of her worst songs ever (Boy). That said, it's a pure R&B album, that wasn't after any commercial success. There was nothing calculated about it, it was more a "I'm still here" album that I genuinely believe she intended as a stop gap record for the fans to enjoy. It's not an album I play whilst ironing or cleaning the bathroom, but one I clear my schedule for, tidy the house up, pour the wine, get the lyrics out, and relax with. And I have to say I don't find I do that with any of her other albums.

Charmbracelet is Mariah's worst album (for me). Even Me I Am Mariah is a little better. I love songs like Subtle Invitation, Lullaby, The One and Yours but I hardly listen to the rest. Miss You (a song that I love) was relegated to B-side.

Morbid overdose. But can't lie that I haven't thought about this before. Fly me like a bird please. I want to reach the heavens on a whistle note.

Charmbracelet (93,945) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
This album, while clearly far from Mariah's best, will somehow always hold a special place in my heart because it's the first album I was able to save up money for and purchase - in cassette. I was in my first year of high school; it was such a sad and awkward time for me, and Through The Rain was a huge hit in Asia for some reason, especially in my country, where it has since been covered by many of our local artists. It was also the first studio album of hers which I really have listened to in full, in sequence, as I have only known Mariah prior to that through her biggest hits. I knew back then that none of what I have heard from it was qualitatively as good or radio-friendly as pretty much any of the songs that I have already heard from her; and to many Mariah fans who have been with her since the beginning of her career, that may sound depressing and quite the worst way to start one's Mariah studio album journey, but I still wouldn't trade it for the world. It was still a special experience for me, just like anyone would value the first time they heard a full studio album of hers.

Chambracelet, along with MOAIA, are Mariah's weakest efforts for me. The former is a mild, mostly sunny set of tunes that sound best when listened to on a lazy afternoon, and was clearly recorded at a transitional time in Mariah's life where she was uncertain of which direction to take next artistically. It's her "where do I go from here" album; she was yet to get used to and take advantage of the changes happening in her vocals. Every album that came before it had obvious highs and lows (except Daydream, where just about every track held its own and were mostly peaks). But for Charmbracelet, even with a few good tracks, that doesn't quite happen - almost everything is middling by Mariah's standards, and it all weirdly blends into beige or pale yellow by the end. You know there's an issue when something as polarizing as Boy (I Need You) (while repetitive and annoying) sonically stands out as one of the highlights - for better or worse. It's pretty milquetoast through and through - filling, but never quite satisfying. While lyrically containing some of Mariah's most vivid pieces since Butterfly, other than that, anything good Mariah has achieved here, she has done better elsewhere, before and after. To me, its biggest accomplisment is that it humanized her and revealed her to be more than just a chart fixture; a musical proof that redemption does take time. After a fall, it can be challenging for us to find our bearings and get back up. That's what Charmbracelet represents.

Regardless, I am still glad it's getting attention. It may not be the best introduction to Mariah's talents, but if anyone out there unfamiliar of her discography just buys it out of curiosity thanks to this #justicefor campaign and still wants to continue discovering the rest of her work after listening to it, then that's still a win. If they are able to appreciate one of the worst, then the good news is that it can really only uphill from there. That was sort of my journey and I'm still here today.

I am not sure I buy that Emancipation would not have happened without Charmbracelet and that Rainbow bears any relation to Glitter. That one came before a success and one came before a flop is irrelevant. Rainbow, itself, was far from a flop, it was a success and had Mariah current and relevant to the music scene of the time. Charmbracelet was a MOTR Oprah snooze fest that disappeared very quickly. "This album is like a Charmbracelet I'm passing down to you" = the meds were still in her system.

Charmbracelet is just *dull*. I could explain quite eruditely why so, but I can't be arsed as any explanation as to why it is dull would be like describing the Sun as a "bit yellow and kinda warm".

No not really. Rod Temperton only gets credit because of Off The Wall interpolation bridge part. I am talking about the full Stargate beat for Because Of You and I'm That Chick that is similar.

Re: I'm That Chick (93,927) (93,940) by Bill from the UK
You don't mean the Off the Wall sample? That's Michael Jackson's groove, not Mariah's.

Re: #Justice4Charmbracelet is 18 on iTunes (93,935) (93,939) by T from USA
It was Charmbracelet that got the creative juices flowing in order to come back with TEOM. Songs like Subtle Invitation and There Goes My Heart paved the way for working with live musicians on the next project. Also her work with JD was a step up from her work with JD on Rainbow which also laid a foundation for the songs they were to produce next. So in some regards Charmbracelet paved the way for one of the greatest musical comeback albums of all times whereas Rainbow paved the way for the album that caused the need for said comeback in the first place.

I understand your point, but commercial success doesn't mean that it's better. In terms of relevancy, yes, Charmbracelet is less important than Rainbow in MC's career. I see it as an album for the fans, not for the general audience because it's not an easy listening album. In general MC's most popular albums and songs are also some of her best [in] terms of quality, but not always.

Glitter was a flop because of the movie, among other factors. They can say what they want about the movie but the album is one of my favourites and so diverse in styles and risky in some ways. Music Box is Mariah's most successful album but the lyrics are very cliché. In many ballads and musically (leaving the singles aside) she did a lot better with Emotions, Daydream or Butterfly.

Touch My Body became number one but Obsessed is better haha. And it stands as one of her post-prime most popular songs.

Caution deserved a lot more attention, though it received great reviews. A few friends (non fans) have told me they listen regularly to With You, A No No or GTFO. And to me it's [in my top] 5 favourites with Daydream, TEOM, Butterfly and Mariah Carey. I don't skip any song from the album.

Unforgettable with French Montana didn't get any attention and I believe if it was sung by any other current artist it would've been a worldwide hit.

I go back and forth between Rainbow and Charmbracelet being her worst album. I listened to Rainbow this past week and there are a couple songs I love so in this moment I'll go with Charmbracelet. Nonetheless I'm only happy that it's #1 on iTunes. Big picture it's a Mariah album at #1. No sense in being Debbie Downer.

Re: #Justice4Charmbracelet is 18 on iTunes (93,933) (93,936) by MC1989 from Spain
I agree with Daydream. It's also my favourite and deserves even much more recognition. As much as I love the first album, Buttetfly, and TEOM, I think Daydream captures Mariah at her best. It was eclectic, and it was the last time Mariah went that pop with Fantasy, in my opinion one of the best songs in her catalogue. I didn't like it at first but through the years I realized how good it is and how much I miss Mariah doing a pop song. Daydream contains some of her best vocals, great arrangements (Daydream Interlude), it has an urban sound (Underneath The Stars, Long Ago, Fantasy), timeless ballads (Open Arms, I Am Free), classic catchy tunes (Always Be My Baby) and some deep lyrics (Looking In). I wish people would remember her for this masterpiece rather than for Merry Christmas. I would like that Mariah and her team would put the same effort in this aniversary as they did last year with the 25th aniversary of Merry Christmas. I love Merry Christmas, don't get me wrong. It's just that I'm tired of the anual AIWFCIY tour, reminding us she's the queen Of Christmas extravaganza and all that. But If she doesn't want AIWFCIY to eclipse a 30 year spanning career she should put the same attention and efforts on promoting the rest of her catalogue.

Rainbow sold 8 million worldwide, was given 3/5 by Rolling Stone Magazine and spawned 2 No.1 singles in the United States and 1 No.1 single in the United Kingdom. Songs from the album are still performed live on stage today.

Charmbracelet sold 3 million worldwide, was awarded 2/5 by Rolling Stone Magazine and spawned nada No.1 singles. Which is, coincidentally, also how many songs from Charmbracelet are performed live on stage today.

I saw Mariah live in London many times during the Charmbracelet promo and it was an amazing time in my life. But the songs were really underwhelming. Also, if anyone says "cohesive body of work", just remember, you're actually saying "nothing stands out because all the bland songs sound the same".

Funeral (93,934) by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway
I know this might be a morbid question, but which Mariah song would you have liked to be played at your funeral?

If I had died today, my family would have known that I would have wanted a Mariah song to be played at my funeral, but I don't think they would have known which song.

The song I would have wanted to be played is "Butterfly".

Re: #Justice4Charmbracelet is 18 on iTunes (93,925) (93,933) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
I think Mariah's best album must be the album you would hand to a non-fan who has never heard her before. For me it would be Daydream. Actually I would hand them Greatest Hits but that may be cheating. Although it would probably make the most sense to try to push it to the top of the iTunes chart so that people are reminded of her wider catalogue. I don't think anyone I know has ever heard of Charmbracelet and I'd like it to stay that way.

My favourite track from E=MC2 is IBLYLT, and this performance is divine. The opening is incredible, it's like the big bang is marching in to Mariah.

Now this is a hot song that Mimi needs to jump on the remix with The Dream and Kiana Lede. The album version with Jhiene Aiko is a perfect combination. This is The Dream's best song in years.

Re: #Justice4Charmbracelet is 18 on iTunes (93,924) (93,928) by MC1989 from Spain
No. It's not. The only thing that bothers me a little bit is the overuse of whispered vocals, but songs like Irresistible, Bringin' On The Heartbreake, Clown, etc make it a good r&b álbum to listen to at home. Not Mariah at her best but a good effort. I think that "Rainbow" is her worst, thought I love the singles.

Charmbracelet (93,926) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
The Charmbracelet album has some of Mariah's best writing and storytelling however vocally she seemed disconnected and uncertain of herself but I understand since it was right after the Glitter era. It is great to see people checking out her back catalog because in my opinion Mariah has one of the best musical catalogs in pop music.

Charmbracelet, not the best in my opinion, but definitely not the worst. You've probably said before, but what's the best album in your opinion? Personally Charmbracelet has some songs that I love, but not a cohesive album I think.
