In The Fix (92,835) by Will from Australia
I’m interested to know what everyone thinks about this, if Mariah had the option to have surgery on her vocal chords and remove the noodles but would risk losing her voice altogether or gaining back Daydream tour vocals, would you say do it?

Well good for you, applause. So maybe you should go to Vegas and sing your 6 Mariah and Celine songs. But I will not and I repeat, will not buy a ticket..

The one thing that amuses me the most is the fact if anyone of you talking her down on this board would have the cojones to utter your "humble" amateurish opinion to her in the flesh?

Caution is still selling and received rave reviews and Mariah just scored her 19th #1 most of the damage the Stella era did to her reputation has been repaired. Besides, the general public doesn't listen to what YouTube vocal coaches say. Last year was the first year since the Rockefeller debacle that my friends didn't post that video to my social media pages.

Mariah's voice (92,830) by Terna from Nigeria
To be fair, she has already in a way addressed this issue in stating that she infact has nodules - a singer's Achilles heel. And this admission explains a lot as to why with every era her voice has constantly kept changing especially when she started doing live shows (1993 Music Box era I believe). Its like her voice started losing its "form" so to speak. And no she does not really slay like she used to and I know she knows that too. I would be thrilled if she hires some form of a vocal coach or and speech therapist.

Re: ASCAP (92,827) (92,828) by RibbonB from USA
Tehehehe, I learned what they were when I was a kid and used to study cassette or album sleeves cover to cover. I used to think ASCAP was the best because so many faves used them. If you read the fine print of songwriters and publishing names you'll see which association they are with at the time. Multiple songwriters may have the same or different ones on the same song. It's just their personal choice.

I wasn't sure actually exactly what ASCAP or BMI was, but I knew it had something to do with money. I understood that much.

Re: No vocal audit (92,823) (92,826) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
Strangers feel entitled to a report on Mariah's vocal health when those very strangers pay her bucket loads of money to hear her sing and come away feeling let down and perplexed. Are those strangers entitled to a refund?

The comparison of Mariah's voice to a model's skin is not a fair one. Naomi Campbell did not start wrinkling at age 27, did not look very rough by age 40 and can still crack a smile at age 50. Mariah's voice isn't aging as a matter of course.

I can sing exactly the same as I did 20 years ago and I belt out about 6 Mariah and Celine songs in the shower per day, stretching my voice to the limit, without fail. I bet most people here do and probably moreso than Mariah since she belts nothing anywhere, anymore and has not done so for a long time.

A long time.

So I don't really care if Mariah tells us what happened. The simple observation was that something has really gone wrong recently and is getting worse. She cannot physically sing and it doesn't look like she enjoys it. These concerts should stop. Period. She has knackered her voice out. For her own sake, she needs to stop touring and try to hopefully recover what little she has left so that the odd good televised performance is possible. Any fan painting a gloss over this is acting with selfishness.

Re: ASCAP (92,824) (92,825) by RibbonB from USA
You should Google to understand what ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC does. They really don't affect careers, but they do collect and distribute money associated with the use of Mariah's music and any other songwriters who I signed to them's music. The best analogy I can think of is like a music library, responsible for various songwriters/artists music catalogs. An artist has to contract with one of these "libraries" to track the use of their music in order to collect and distribute royalties. Mimi received a BMI icon award from that organization in 2012 when she was with them. ASAP has its own awards as well. Here is an article that describes what these groups like ASCAP does.

No vocal audit (92,823) by Geronimo from USA
It's difficult to understand why strangers feel entitled to a report on Mariah's vocal health. Whatever happened to common sense? It's clear that her voice has been in the current process for quite some time - longer than it has been anything one might call stable. It would almost be like asking a model why she is aging so quickly, asking an aging professor to explain in his next book the precise course of his current mental decline, or a former child prodigy on the piano to recite for you the history of her loss of articulation and speed for each decade you've noticed something you don't like. Aren't there just certain things you don't demand of people you don't know? Isn't that the whole point of lore?

It still surprises me how strong her voice was when she was pregnant. It's interesting to consider the different factors that can make her voice stronger or weaker. It's unfortunate that her voice is fragile. But at least there is always hope that she will deliver a good performance, even though it's inconsistent

Re: Move to ASCAP (92,820) (92,821) by RibbonB from USA
That has nothing to do with her being around or not. She needs one of those types of companies to monitor/collect money for the playing, streaming etc. of her written songs. She's just moving from BMI to ASCAP. Those are the two major entities for that purpose.

She was with BMI, but sounds like she tried SESAC, the other major company.

"There's a huge possibility she won't gain any newfound respect from non fans or people who just love to hate her."

This is my main concern with her explaining whatever might have happened. The Mariah hate train is as real as all her incredible accomplishments. The way I see it is that she has already come clean by not engineering Caution to perfection. I think she has finally moved on. But if she does choose to take on this topic, I hope she approaches it very carefully. While it may give closure to long-time fans, it might also backfire with the public who would likely take it as a confession that the very product she sells no longer works. It's a risk. I hope she leaves this topic alone for now, unless there's a compelling backstory with a lot of excellent phrasing.

Here to stay (92,818) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
We all should take it from Languishing: "And after all these years of enmity, envy and tears, it's a shame you don't know me at all."

If there's one thing we could say about Mariah, it's that she is not a quitter. Even during her lowest of lows, she has always tried to bounce back after and as long as she watches her health I don't see that changing drastically in the next 20 years at least. She will keep on making music, getting business/endorsement deals, etc. She will gradually slow down, but she's not gonna stop. She is in it for the long haul.

As for the constant touring, the 2010s has reassured Mariah that she just has to do the bare minimum and still sell tickets, so I don't see that ending anytime soon, especially since that's how she makes bank these days much more than actually selling new music. Kind of sad, but if younger artists like Gaga, Christina and Kelly are resorting to residencies these days, then Mariah likely isn't going anywhere, even with the accelerating deterioration of her voice.

Also, we need a pop legend in the industry who is still capable of making good records. MJ, Whitney and George are sadly not with us anymore. Celine's last decent one was in the early 2000s. Madonna hasn't made a great record since Confessions on a Dancefloor. Cher is likely just gonna do themed cover version albums especially after the success of her latest one. It's just Janet and Mariah who have actually proven within the last decade that they can come up with accomplished, critically praised albums of new music decades into their career, way past their prime. So why stop now? The holidays won't let her anyway.

I also wish she would tell the truth about it. She will always be the voice no matter what happened. But if Mariah would talk about it the annoying rumours will stop. Funny side note, I dreamed about MC last night. I was visiting a concert of hers and it felt so real. Lol Mariah is the only artist I sometimes dream about. I think that tells a lot.

Expectations (92,816) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
When you look at an artist of Mariah's caliber, and the success that she has had expectations are always high. But I have come to the realization that Mariah is human just like the rest of us no matter how great she may be. She has given all of us moments to be grateful for, and just because she may not be able to exceed my expectations of her like she used to more times than not, my love for her art has not wavered. As humans we are not always going to like something that our favorite people might do but they does not mean that we should bash or make them feel less than, sometimes we have to look at our expectations for ourselves, and stop placing them on our favorite entertainers, and celebrities.

Re: The fans decline (92,813) (92,814) by Licia from USA
I agree she doesn't need to retire, but that voice talk definitely needs to be had. Her trying to ignore it and make it seem as if nothing wrong is the biggest issue that a lot of us have. There's a huge possibility she won't gain any newfound respect from non fans or people who just love to hate her, but I think it would go a long way with us. I personally am tired of hearing all the unofficial vocal coaches/fans with their assumuptions on what the issue is (drinking, touring, nodules, smoking, she's manic, etc etc) when she can shut us all up with an honest discussion. I've been at peace with her vocal changes for years and like you I do believe she's still a capable singer, but I'll never be at peace with her constantly avoiding the topic and fans continuously giving her passes to avoid it.

Re: The fans decline (92,797) (92,813) by Musti from UK
I don't think she needs to retire either, nor does she need to explain what happened to her voice. It's simply the clock ticking. Voices get tired over time, some faster than others. What happened to Julie Andrews was tragic and unfair, totally different from M's situation. Explaining how fragile her voice is or justifying her fondness for champagne isn't going to get her newfound respect. What she needs to do is to minimize the touring. Long sets no longer work for her. She's still more than capable of handling appearances. Take her recent Christmas performances on James Corden's show. I was impressed and proud. If Janet can still go on releasing new albums, so can Mariah.

I was mainly confused where the "she's pretty for a fat girl" topic came from. By your response I'm even more confused so I'll just move on. Lol.

Anyway Lizzo is an awesome artist and I'm so glad she's finally getting her dues. She's super talented.

Re: Lizzo (92,810) (92,811) by Dove from United States
I didn't say she needed to but she probably will. They all do. I think Lizzo carries her weight well and still looks hot. Maybe because she feels comfortable and owns it.

Honestly, I have issues with my own weight so I assume everyone else does too. Maybe I'm projecting. After my divorce from my first husband I was super depressed watching Netflix and eating a lot of take out. I got up to a size 14 (I'm only 5'3) and took a cab down to Tijuana to get the sleeve then a tummy tuck a year later. My first husband would always comment on how fat I was when I was married to him (even though I wasn't that overweight back then) and when I was a kid, whenever I gained too much weight, my mom would put me on a "diet" where she wouldn't call me down for dinner. So whatever mean comments I may make are rooted in self-hate.
