Re: Songwriters Hall of Fame (92,409) (92,511) by Bobby A from United States
MC should be in full recording mode for her new album by the time of the ceremony on June 11th. When she is doing interviews and walking the red carpet on that day, she is going love talking about what she working on in the studio. I really feel she is going to try bring her next album full 360 with songs that have shaped her 30 years as a singer/songwriter. It only makes sense for her to do this because 2020 is going to be significant year for her career. I can't wait to see what type of music she releases in 2020.

Some dirt (92,510) by Will from Australia
I had no idea who Roger was that you guys are mentioning so I did some digging and came across this discussion in a forum from a long time ago. I don't know how genuine it is but it was super interesting to read nonetheless

Re: Roger (92,508) (92,509) by Bill from the UK
B, go listen to I Want To Thank You by Alicia Myers, then Make It Happen by Mariah. Mariah's written a lot of great songs in her time, but she's also had a number of (justified) out of court settlements as well. You do need at times to take a step back and see things for what they are. Remove those rose tinted glasses every once in a while. You're a good soul but sometimes your love for her is a bit blinded.

Re: Roger (92,477) (92,508) by B from USA
I wasn't surprised by his she's not a songwriter because she's been sued for plagiarism nonsense. Every successful singer/songwriter has been accused of plagiarism. Emotions was released when sampling wasn't a common practice and she's credited her inspirations ever since. The Hero suit is insane and was thrown out twice. The last suit was over TGIFY and I think it's meritless because dozens of songs from 1999 sound exactly like TGIFY. Roger ardently defended Mariah until she parted ways with Cindy and he's attempted to diminish her credibilityy ever since. I loved it when he had to admit that #Beautiful was a good song because it is.

Re: Mariah (92,500) (92,507) by Tijl from Belgium
"Butterfly" will not be surpassed I am afraid. I do enjoy "Caution" because of te cohesive storyline but it lacks the depth and the lyrical genius of her magnus opus.

The stories she tells in songs such as "The Roof" and "Close My Eyes" are timeless and relevant to so many people because they are poignant without being overtly blatant about somebody or certain situations. "Caution" is a snack compared to the fine dining of "Butterfly".

With You (92,506) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
With You is definitely about Bryan, the lyrics are definitely about her relationship with him. One of his favorite MC songs is Breakdown which the Bone Thugz reference. The Tupac references is because that is Bryan’s favorite rapper. Also she made references about getting to married to Packer, and Bryan rescuing her from the relationship with Packer. So With You is certainly about Bryan.

I'll admit I stopped reading your song theories, so I didn't read your last post to the last sentence. But my usual shade towards the usual suspect bt still stands. As for GML, I won't say who I think it's about so people don't get up in arms, but I hope Mimi reveals it in this book she insisted on writing.

Re: Mariah (92,498) (92,504) by B from USA
I said I was probably wrong but that's it's fun to speculate who she wrote what song about. It's not that deep.

I'm so ashamed that after all these years I never caught his voice on that song and especially on that particular part. It's so loud and clear. I can't even know how I missed. Lol.

Tommy (92,502) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
Tommy even though he may have some wicked ways about him when it has come to our Mariah, he has given her credit as an amazing songwriter, and he also gave her credit on being the one that made him appreciate the gift, and art of songwriting. Also we have to credit Mariah herself for being smart enough to say that she wanted to write her own songs, and have that stipulation incorporated into her contact. Because she has had two different opportunities where she could have given her songs away, one to crappy publishing deal for 5K, and Brenda wanted to record some of MC’s songs for her own album but luckily MC was strong in her faith, and kept her songs for herself.

Re: Walter Afanasieff (92,490) (92,501) by RibbonB from USA
Yet he invites all the drama with his whining. He gets his money, that's all he's entitled to really. She has acknowledged him as a co writer, but she has a right to limit her discussion to herself rather than talk about other people, especially people she's not cool with.

Re: Mariah (92,466) (92,500) by MusicfanJ from Germany
"Caution is nowhere near the musical or lyrical masterpiece that is Butterfly." That's so true. I love Caution musically, but the lyrics makes me cringe sometimes too. That's oK, it can be fun. But that's the difference. "Butterfly" is on another liga. It's like a poetical music journey. Brilliant.

Re: Mariah (92,488) (92,498) by RibbonB from USA
None of the songs are obviously about anything or anybody, you're making assumptions about them all especially the ones you perceive being about Packer and Stella. Why wouldn't she write them all about her rented reality man? We've all a right to our opinions, but it doesn't make them facts.

Re: Where's whining Walter? (92,493) (92,496) by Bill from the UK
Agree. Walter and Mariah's "falling out" was a contractual issue more than anything. She wanted him to take sides, he couldn't because Tommy was his boss, she didn't like that so stopped working with him. He's always spoken highly and respectfully of her talent. People pouncing on "emblazonedgate" need to get over it. All it indicated was that Walter needs to invest in a thesaurus.

Re: Babyface (92,472) (92,495) by Bill from the UK
Haha, he is most prominent on the bridge. Mariah coos "you and me" and he adds a backing "you and me" before she sings "in a cloud of reverie".

I have to disagree with you again but in a good way. The transition from GTFO to With You is brilliant. They are both stunning and and sonically fluid next to each other.

Re: Where's whining Walter? (92,473) (92,493) by Andrew from the United Kingdom
As the years go by the sheep do increasingly hate upon Walter which would be fine to me as I have no particular fondness for him but I struggle to realise the source of all the ire. So he and Mariah stopped working together. What actually happened we will never know (I'm looking at you, hideously titled book). But he wants to be recognised as part composer of one of the biggest songs of all time - which he is increasingly ignored about. He was instrumental (ahem) in the song. Without him it would not sound as it does and might mot even have been a success. He helped write the music and he played, or rather created, every single sound on the track you hear apart from the vocals (I dont know or care if he engineered them or someone else did). I find it highly unlikely that Mariah went in with the entire melody of the whole song as it appears on the final press given that she never does that and they both composed songs by playing around with chord changes. Mariah is undoubtedly a musical magician, but I think so was Walter and diminshing his contributions to Mariah's best known and loved songs or his importance to Mariah Carey's career is mean-spirited and yet more revisionist nonsense.

I don't think she did. Reese Witherspoon and Cardi also hyped it.

Re: H.E.R. (92,475) (92,491) by this_is_qhm from the Philippines
H.E.R. is one of the artists this generation that actually gives me hope. She has released 2 solid albums, and while her songs can be quite a challenge to tell apart, she is a great songwriter and musician, which is quite really impressive especially considering how young she is. Best Part, U, Focus, 21, Take You There, I Won't, Could've Been, Let Me In, etc. are top-notch R&B. Definitely an artist that lets her talent do all the talking.

Walter Afanasieff (92,490) by Dove from United States
He probably hasn't congratulated her because whenever he mentions her name some of the Lambily jumps on him like he's the worst villain ever. Just like they did to Tommy when he congratulated MC when AIWFCIY hit number one. These are rich, grown men with their own lives to live. They don't need all that drama.

Re: Mariah / B (92,480) (92,489) by B from USA
I love Mariah Carey the artist for her art, not the accolades and chart achievements which is why I didn't jump ship during the Glitter era or abandon her after the opening night of the Elusive Chanteuse tour, Rockefeller Center debacle, or the NYE fiasco. She's earned my love and loyalty and I'll always support her. It's sad that some of you no longer appreciate her music because unlike her contemporaries she continues to evolve musically while staying true to who she is.

Re: Mariah (92,484) (92,488) by B from USA
Which of my detailed assumptions do suspect are hard wrong? The Distance and With You are clearly about Bryan as are OMG and SLLY. GTFO and A No No are obviously about Packer and Stella. 8th Grade is about how her insecurities, insecurities she has stated she developed in eighth grade, have affected and continue to affect her relationships and Portrait is about how she's become somewhat desensitized and is yet somehow still the same hopeful child who is haunted by severed ties and how she had to push past the parasites (Stella and Co.) who may have knocked her down (personally and professionally) but that she hasn't become demoralized by the ordeal and wondering where she is going to go from here. I might be wrong about Giving Me Life being about Bryan. The lyrics thinking about when we were seventeen do make me think it's about a former lover but I think she just used it because it rhymes with Norma Jeane and evergreen. Even if I'm hard wrong it's fun to speculate who inspired her to write certain songs.

Re: Mariah (92,481) (92,487) by B from USA
Mariah hasn't written the lyrics to an entire album since Butterfly(the only exceptions on that album being Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone's ad-libs and verse on Breakdown, her interpolation of lyrics from Elton John's Someone Saved My Life Tonight on Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise), and her cover of Prince's The Beautiful Ones). I think she enjoys writing with other people because she feeds off of their energy and it turns into a party (most of her Caution collaborators talk about Mariah drinking wine while writing).
