Wendy mentioned this too on her Hot Topics yesterday. She said Mariah will always be her #1. I'm not bothered by OTR breaking the record. Sometimes the social reasons that make a song popular far outweigh the need for the song to be amazing. Besides, OTR is a good song. Just nowhere near OSD's standard.

What are you even talking about? The remix rule got stricter over time. Mariah has made use of the possibility to create a whole new song but call it a remix to have it count towards the same track on the charts, but early 00s Billboard changed the rules saying remixes can’t be vastly different anymore. You can add an artist or a verse, but you can no longer change the beat and/or melody entirely. Sooooo that whole rule as an argument kinda fails here.
Besides, records are meant to be broken. She still has song of the decade two decades in a row. Relax.

OSD and other records forever (90,490)
by Lainsky from Philippines
| |
|
|
So, it finally happened. So what? Well, the mere fact that it's OSD that has achieved that record and hold it for more than two decades is something that stays forever along with all the records Mariah has set for the first time. Like I said in my previous post, records are meant to be broken but did OTR truly has broken the record? Yes and no. Yes, for the fact that it is now on its 17th week reign. No, for OSD has been there already and set the trend in which it cannot or no longer be beaten.

Steaming vs. legitimate sales (90,489)

True, it is easier and much cheaper to steam a song on loop than to buy several copies of a single or constantly request for it on radio stations, but the music industry has evolved and we all just have to accept it and move on. In fairness to this streaming era, I believe it does have its own difficulties as well, such as a much more fleeting interest from the public due to the wider access to more material. It makes it easier for a song to debut at #1, but it also makes it quite the battle to stay on top. So while streaming somehow does lessen the overall impact of charting to some extent (at least to us who were around long enough to witness the traditional way of doing things), it still is the current system and there really is nothing we can do about it.

The record has been broken (90,488)

While most fans are up in a tizzy being all salty and defensive about Mariah losing the record to an inferior song, I'm one of those who are relieved we don't have to worry about it anymore. There is always a bigger push towards breaking than retaining a record, and this time, it was One Sweet Day's turn to bow out. Mariah still has better records that no one can take away from her, like being the first woman to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 and having two Songs of the Decade back-to-back. Those records hold much more weight to me. If the queen herself has classily relinquished one of her crowns, so should we.

Old Town Road is a great song (90,486)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
On 20 April 2019, I posted on MCArchives: "I would like Mariah to collab with a country artist. Old Town Road is one of the hottest tracks I've heard in awhile, and hopefully Mariah can branch out to that genre too."
That was 3 months ago. Search it, page 50 (or 51 now probably). That was before the song completely blew up. I knew I heard something, because you know, I got a good ear for a hit.
The truth is, huge hits sometimes happen by accident. You don't know what will be a hit. Artists have to experiment and find it somewhere deep inside them. Mariah herself said it sometimes you can't tell if a song will be huge. She actually thought WBT will not be a huge hit, and that It's Like That will be a bigger hit. Well, everything happens for a reason.

by Travis from USA

I have to start by saying that I have nothing against Lil Nas X whatsoever. Mariah and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" was #1 for 16 weeks based strictly on sales, radio airplay, and no social media (never existed). Today, all you have to do is stream a song millions of times (mostly) with little sales, lack of radio airplay, create tons of remixes that count as the same song, and an artist can remain at the top easily for weeks at a time with no major chart shifts. These kinds of things never happened until Billboard changed the rules a couple of years ago. Am I upset that this "most weeks at #1" record was broken? Yes, but because of the rules and not the artist. Had the rules back then still applied today, this record most likely wouldn't have been broken so easily and songs on the Hot 100 would have a chance to shift. It even took the rules change from Billboard for "Despacito" to tie the record at the time. Just sayin'.

Yes and I am saying the impact of charting via streaming loses something for me. It’s not that I’m not happy for the artists doing well with it. I just feel it’s more meaningful when a song catches on and it’s everywhere. I’d not even about Mariah keeping the record.

Yes Terna, I asked myself the same. "What happened to the magic? Where did it up and leave to? Music used to inspire and move people, now it only gives a headache. It's sad." I'm happy to have a big collection too from Mariah and all the other true musicians. A cd or vinyl is so much more worth than just a click on a streaming platform.

But streaming is how music is consumed these days. If Old Town Road was released in the 90s, it would have sold a lot of physical copies, as that was how music was consumed.

I agree. At least Despacito was everywhere. Even if you were not looking for it, it would pop up everywhere. Mariah handing over the torch with such grace and class makes me happy, that wouldn't have happened on Counturella's watch. Finally I dont have to worry about that record anymore.

Completely agree. The quality on the streaming charts are so poor now. I had to google the song because the German radio stations don't play it/or not often (maybe on the young/fm). To compare that song with OSD is ridiculous. When OSD was released the radio stations played it on my German radio station every hour, I swear. That time was heaven to be a Mariah fan. I have no problem that Mr. Nas X and the country singer broke MC's record because that song is nothing that will last. Just compare the lyrics. When Mariah starts to sing: Sorry I never told you, goosebumbs guaranteed. And yes I love Boyz II Men, one of the best artists at that time in 95/96 for sure. Real rnb from the heart. I wonder if a ballad or a slow song has a chance today to be on number one. (When it's not from Adele, Bruno Mars or Ed Sheeran.) Maybe a movie song?

I was happy to see Mariah’s response to the record on social media. It was nice to see her passing the torch. And I don’t bregrudge anyone their success, but I do think it is fair to discuss the impact of streaming and the difference between breaking a record in the 90’s versus today. Even if Mariah did break the record again through streaming for me it would not have the same impact as OSD because the rules were different and the song impacted organically. That’s not sour grapes it’s just the difference in how things are done now.

Yet, if Mariah got a 20 week reign at the top with her next song due to streaming, it'd be completely legitimate. It's one rule for Mariah, another for everyone else it seems. The record got broken, let's move on. Mariah took the news with grace and class, so should we.

This is kinda upsetting, but more revealing as to the sorry state of music in general, the younger lost (all caps) generation and the music industry as a whole. What happened to the magic? Where did it up and leave to? Music used to inspire and move people, now it only gives a headache. It's sad. Truly sad. In the next ten years music would be absolute "shite" to put it. Oh Well I'm glad I have my Mariah Carey records.

I am never one to bend truth in Mariah's favour. You believe in honesty and integrity. When I say that the songs OSD and OTR are not worth comparing it is with just cause. Despacito and Old Town Road are average songs. They do not belong in the same league as One Sweet Day or I Will Always Love You, et al. Songs like that were milestones in music and defined their times. Songs, now, seem to be able to achieve great lengths at the top because of streaming. The rules of the game have changed. If you are playing the game by different rules to someone else then score comparisons are of little worth. Rather than radio having to play your song to people who have to go out and buy it, kids sit at home and press a mouse button. And, for that, any adult who still cares about the charts may possibly be just a bit silly. Myself included.

I'm not begrudging anyone's right to break records, but I agree with Stacey. I think it's great that the collaboration on OTR is socially current and relevant that's wonderful happy for the artists, but I have yet to hear the song without seeing it out on my own and for a song to break a record musically I should know it and it should have at least made major impact on me. Niether has happened this time. Welcome to streaming music and how the quality of creating songs had changed.

I haven't even listened to Old Town Road. Not because I don't want to, I haven't looked for it. I am thinking more who is this Lil Nas X? Is he related to Nas? I'm serious. I listened to adult contemporary and "old school" radio stations. Where can I listen to this song?

Really? Because OSD was a top 10 hit in most places. In any case, it performed better overseas than ABMB did. Check out the chart placements and the sales. Currently, OSD has over 172 million views on Youtube compared to the 150 million for ABMB. Quite arguably, over the years, Mariah's performed "Always" far more frequently than One Sweet Day. Clearly, people remember it and like it. There was only one version of One Sweet Day. There were several versions and remixes for Always Be My Baby. The latter had better radio longevity overall, but that makes sense. People don't celebrate nor think about death until it happens. It hits hard when it does, so I think that explains a lot of OSD's success. However, love relationships, whether romantic or familial, can apply to all sorts of people in your life.

I remember wondering why and how One Sweet Day stayed on top of the charts for almost 4 months, especially since the song was the definition of an almost exclusively US hit, and that the song, while touching and relatable, wasn't really all that spectacular (the record was bigger than song itself). But then it hit me that in the past, there wasn't social media around, and so it much slower and more difficult to gain local, let alone worldwide success, and so most people only actually noticed, remembered and held on to the ones that made it big. Back then, MTV was crucial in promoting artists' new material, and the only ways that a video would be in heavy rotation (the 90s version of "going viral") were that if it was an undeniable hit or if it was from a hot, big-named artist. Boyz II Men was arguably the biggest R&B act at the time (TLC was probably a close second), and Mariah was obviously the biggest star then, so I really credit the song's lasting reign to mostly the combination of their star power. That and the fact the R&B was basically pop at the time.

I do agree though that One Sweet Day was a bit of a mystery for me all these years. It's a nice song. But 16 weeks at number one? I think We Belong Together deserved its long reign at the top, if not longer, but it's interesting OSD came and went on the rest of the charts worldwide in a matter of weeks. I feel sorry for the US as Sony canned the Open Arms single release there as OSD was still number one as Open Arms was being released all over the rest of the world. Also it is quite fitting that the record was ended by Always Be My Baby. But that song was number 2 for weeks and weeks as a consequence, and deserved a much longer run at the top of the chart, given how it ended up standing the test of time and is still played on US radio to this day.
