Re: Five most iconic Mariah recordings (89,789) (89,793) by Andrew from London UK
Love your list. The truth is that Mariah has such a prolific catalogue with different milestones and points of note in it that limiting it to 5 is nigh on impossible. The great thing about a prolific artist like Mariah is that she has managed to create soundtracks to lifetimes. This is a feat very few achieve.

I'd add Butterfly to the list. Her performance of it on Letterman shows just how difficult that song is to sing. You can physically see her struggling at certain points in the performance and I believe she would've struggled to perform it live even during her peak.

Oh my, what a voice. I wish they release these epic performances someday like they did with Whitney, in a CD + DVD album. Vision of Love live at NARM convention is one of my favourite MC's performances. I hope to see the whole performance of Vanishing in a near future like it happened with the Michael Bolton duet (first came the snippet and after a long time someone uploaded the whole audio). Thanks Bill.

"Just the whistle part towards the end of Bringing On The Heartbreak." Oh how could I forget this one. Her whistle is out if this world on this song.

I'd put in songs that are a "I dare anyone to even try to attempt to match this" vocal showcase which for me are:
1. Whenever You Call
2. Lead The Way
3. We Belong Together
4. All I Want For Christmas Is You
5. Just the whistle part towards the end of Bringing On The Heartbreak

Re: Five most iconic Mariah recordings (89,783) (89,788) by RibbonB from USA
1. Vision of Love, the beginning
2. All I Want, the perennial classic
3. Anytime You Need a Friend, peak Mariah
4. Always Be My Baby, timeless Mariah, cruising on all cylinders
5. We Belong Together, renaissance Mimi, ABMB revisited and updated with classic writing team
Bonus: Touch My Body, last #1, current Mimi, sassy, trying to be sexy, adventurous, little reckless, kitschy, catchy

Re: Five most iconic Mariah recordings (89,783) (89,787) by MusicfanJ from Germany
I love the live version of "America the Beautiful" so much. And the reactions of the NBA players. Tough question, I'll try to choose:
1. Vision of love (until today unrivalled)
2. Without you (one of her best covers)
3. Fantasy (the ultimate Mariah song)
4. Hero (the message will always inspire people)
5. All I want for Christmas is you (MC is the queen of Christmas with no doubts)
It's even harder to pick a live-version, maybe the SNL Can't Let Go version and Anytime You Need a Friend at Tokyo Dome. Bill your choices are great. The Dreamlover remix is one of my favs too. I'm going to listen to it now.

Re: Mariah shares post of her and Celine Dion carpool karaoke (89,776) (89,786) by Musti from UK
That's probably true. This is mainly why I think an aria would be a good fit for them. Belting is really where the competition lies for female singers. There's no such thing in an aria. Everyone has a role and you have to sing within your range. Celine knows she can't demand the soprano part. I doubt I'll ever get that duet or an aria but, like I said, let a bitch dream.

Re: Five most iconic Mariah recordings (89,783) (89,785) by Musti from UK
Great list. Outside or FLAB could be good for #5 but sadly neither is popular enough to be iconic. I'd say We Belong Together. Not only did it save her career, but it also inspired a new generation of mid-tempo ballads. Hero could also be appropriate for this list but it didn't really do much in terms of changing the game. Plus, someone would need to shoot me if Hero was playing on repeat. I definitely can't say the same about the other songs on your list.

Five most iconic Mariah recordings (89,783) by Bill from the UK
If you could cite five iconic Mariah recordings to put into a time capsule, what would they be? Mine are as follows (in no order):
1. All I Want for Christmas Is You - Became a Christmas classic, one of the most popular songs in the world, and her signature song.
2. Fantasy Remix - Set the template for rap collaborations, as good now as it was then. This is completely left field at the time when Mary Poppins teamed up with Ol Dirty Bastard.
3. Vision of Love - Inspired an entire generation of singers with the melisma singing style (really not done by anyone in the way Mariah did it in 1990). Showcases all aspects of her wonderful voice perfectly.
4. Dreamlover (Def Club Mix) - Again, Mariah rose to the occasion and redefined the remix genre by rising above the industry standard and completely re-singing the track so that it barely resembled the original.
5. Now it's getting tricky. I want to include a live recording. Is it America the Beautiful at the NBA final, Emotions at MTV Awards where she hit her highest note ever, If It's Over on SNL? But what about Hero, a song that inspired a generation to believe in themselves when no one else does, or We Belong Together? A track that reasserted MC's throne and was adorned the world over. Or a deep album cut like Outside? Or even a studio recording like Emotions which shows off her stunning range? Or When You Believe with Whitney? Two beautiful voices together. In the end though, it had to be Why You Mad.

Re: Tours (89,779) (89,780) by Bill from the UK
Yep. I remember before Mariah came on stage and we were in between the guest act and her, the excitement across the venue was electric. So much so, we started doing a Mexican wave to pass the time. After the Daydream Interlude and Emotions started, I burst into tears lol. It was far too much for me to handle. Seeing her and the backing singers and band members (the very same from the Thanksgiving tape I watched every weekend) was just surreal. Hero went down massively, the bridge was all I could want it to be. This is why I don't mind missing her concerts these days, Daydream will stay with me "forever".

Re: Tours (89,777) (89,779) by Andrew from London UK
The "tear them away" in the Hero bridge at Daydream World Tour, London would've had me. London was the last stop on the tour on June 23 1996 and since the last Daydream era performance was three weeks later, you were one of the very last few to hear Mariah Carey's Daydream era voice. Which is cool. But it is a travesty that nobody recorded video of the Lonson leg. But we always have Rotterdam. One of the best parts of that tour has to be the Dutch crowd keeping themselves entertained before the encore. Brilliant.

What documentary is this from? This is an unseen clip of MC performing "Vanishing" at the NARM convention. Any more info on the source, though?

Nothing will ever beat the Daydream Tour. I was there at the London show, one of the best nights of my life. Dunno if I've ever mentioned it.

I think wild horses would have to drag Mariah on stage with Celine. But it would be cool to see. A released duet would certainly make headlines around the world. Also, if anyone had tickets to Celine in Hyde Park in London and wants to take me - I will let you pound on my face for a full 20 seconds. Ta.

Tours (89,775) by Andrew from London UK
Except for the whistle note which was pretty shockingly high and unexpected, the FLAB snippet only really shows what powerful voices Mariah's backup singers have. You would be hard pressed to even hear Mariah's voice. Talk of Mariah's improved vocals, whilst unequivocal improvements have indeed been made, verges on the hysterical and those foaming in hyperbole should themselves proceed with caution. She is still often flat on many notes trying to sing up to the note and not down on it, her throat sounds heavy and inflexible in some areas and her lipsync is still very necessary to get out of normal speaking range, e.g., the climax of Endless Love. However, she does sound a lot better than before so credit where credit is due. The Caution Tour is, as was the Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour, bold and fresh. I know people like the Daydream Tour here (does anyone know someone named William who saw it in London?) but the recent tours may beat it - if not vocally, then for energy and excitement alone. It may just be for the fact that the catalogue is now much more extensive and the nostalgia moments ripe throughout. I'm looking forward to Christmas at the O2 in December now. But I would urge Mariah to release an upbeat dance/summer record next year and tour it. Starting in London, of course.

JLo / LA Reid (89,771) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
Yes she is signed to his new label funny thing about that is JLo has had many deals in recent years and everything she done musically as of late is not sticking but the media looks past that she has worked with Khaled, Cardi, French Montana and she has not been able to find her mark with the new music generation but her other endeavors keep her in the four front.
