Her performance and especially the speech showed us that she does music not just for the money, but it's self motivated. Madonna on the other hand, and without any help, is destroying her legacy. I have talked a bit about this with people I know who don't fancy either Madonna or Mariah, and they say you can age with your career in a classic way or the wrong way. The people I have talked about are amazed how desperatly Madonna has gotten, and how gracefully Mariah is protecting her legacy. (Monday 20 May 2019; 17:10)

I still have it (the cassette) it's like a holy grail, I mean for music. When I first heard "Fantasy" on the radio I immediately bought the album. And I wanted to know everything about this beautiful woman and singer with a voice I never heard before. Later I realized that Mariah also sung "Without You". I felt like I already knew half the album because of Dreamlover, Hero, Without You and Never Forget You (WY's b-side). My room was being decorated so I was in my brother's room in a sleeping bag. I remember I had my headphones and walkman and listened to that tape over and over, reading the lyrics. I think she became so precious to me because she was the first singer I discovered without any outside influence. She was mine. She still is lol, I just let y'all borrow her. I don't love her enough to criticise her deeply (some people here will never get me, although others do). You weren't a 90s child to me if you didn't love Take a Bow. You weren't a 90s child if you did not love the whole of Ray of Light. You were not excited at Madonna's rebirth in 2005 with Confessions if you didn't love her in the 90s. I love me some Madonna. I love Madonna. But I am bare faced with truth. At Mariah's worst, she still has music in her. Madonna was awful at Eurovision and it made me sad. She looks shocking. She sounds shocking. She appears desperate. Mariah went that way with I Don't and Stellagate. Mariah at the BBMAs, although not perfect, showed how someone becomes a legend. I was proud of her. Massively. Madonna stans will undoubtedly be worried today. Mariah did me proud at the BBMAs. I once worried for her legacy. I'm more hopeful now. I almost died when I came across it because Mariah wasn't popular in Ireland back then (changed after Hero/Without You). When Loverboy came out I bought that, and was certain when I bought Glitter it would be a smash. When I went to London for the Charmbracelet tour, I went to a Virgin Mega Store and bought everything I didn't have in my collection. The second one was the MTV Unplugged, and later Emotions (I had that album recorded on a cassette). I remember that I found the CD single of "Vision of love " in Copenhagen in 1992 but didn't buy it. I have regretted that decision ever since. I started collecting in 1993 when I bought "Dreamlover". Suddenly I had like 150 different CDs and singles. (Sunday 19 May 2019; 14:36)

Yes, I was bored sitting in an almost empty classroom with my headphones on when "Open Arms" came on. That voice, so soothing, so angelic, so melodic, captivated me. Imagine my surprise when I then realized that I had "Mariah Carey", "Emotions" "MTV Unplugged" and "Music Box" to binge on. I discovered "Merry Christmas" later when I heard "All I Want From Christmas Is You" at a Computer Show. All this happen not in the US, but in Dominican Republic, where we only had two radio stations that played music in English at that time, and a few stores that sold CD's and cassettes from the most popular music in English. How I wished we had mp3 players back then, I used to carry all this effing cassettes and then CD's with me in my backpack. Buying batteries for my walk-man and then disc-man made a hole in my pocket, lol. Those were the days. (Sunday 19 May 2019; 13:45)

First Mariah item (89,648) by Bill from the UK Continuing the theme, I'd be really interested to know what everybody's first purchased Mariah item was. I remember seeing the Dreamlover cassette for 99p in the local record shop but, for reasons I still can't understand to this day, opted for Janet Jackson's If. Then I nearly got the Hero cassette but didn't have enough pocket money left (curse Woolworths and their pick n mix), and in the end my first item was the Without You cassette. I played it so much the tape wore out and got chewed up and I begged my mum to buy me another one. My end of the bargain was to do the washing up all week hah. I still have the chewed up version for sentimental reasons lol. Don't think I could ever part with it. (Sunday 19 May 2019; 12:09)
