Re: The voices Mariah and Whitney (89,297) (89,299) by Bill from the UK
I also have been playing the debut a lot recently. Her voice is flawless, and the difference with Whitney is around tone I think. Mariah's voice has so many different facets and nuances, and of course the range. Her tone, especially on everything pre-Daydream, had this warmth and body to it, it's hard to explain really but I've never heard another voice like it. I think her friend from school put it perfectly: "When you sing, it sounds like there is music behind you."

Mariah vs Whitney (89,298) by Edward from USA
At their peaks, Whitney had a more powerful voice, but Mariah was more versatile and an overall better singer. Whitney would've sung circles around Mariah because her voice would've drowned Mariah's, unless Mariah started hitting high notes left and right. While Whitney didn't create melodies like Mariah, she exuded confidence because she was in control of her instrument. She would stand there, and you knew girl was about to blow your wig away, with glue and all, that's why some women hated her. Mariah would get to you not only with her voice, but with her lyrics, the complexities of her melodies and her singing. Many sung Whitney's songs, but when some have tried those Mariah's songs that to the ear seem to be easy, they have struggled, big time. Jessica Sanchez on American Idol matched "I Will Always Love You" note for note, but when she tried "My All", she came to realization that you don't f with most Mariah's songs. Jennifer Lopez looked at her and said: I didn't know it was that difficult. Mariah was great, but she couldn't always matched her perfection in the studio, that's why she resulted to dubbing many performances that many now can't believe were dubbed because she was insecure. Mariah dubbed her performance with Pavarotti for example. I love me some Whitney, I loved her charisma, her confidence, her music, but her music didn't get to me as Mariah's did. As for Aretha and Patti, love them both, but I hate the screaming thing while singing. Some people might call it soulful, some might call it great, I just don't like it, unless you're Chaka Khan singing "Gotta Be There", only time, lol. Whitney's voice was powerful and clear, she never screamed, so, out of all of them, including Mariah, Whitney had the more powerful voice, Mariah had the best voice over all.

I also think that Whitney had more "power". But Mariah has something in her voice that is so unique and untouched. It is the dreamy thing that takes you to another place. Angel like, mysterious and haunting.

I always preferred Mariah's voice (also I like Whitney) because of these reasons. I love MC's softness in her voice so much and when she's singing with power it's heavenly. By the way I'm listening to Mariah's debut and I'm still blown away.

Re: Mariah's memoir (89,292) (89,296) by Licia from USA
I don't expect her to give details that would embarrass her or anyone else, but I don't want the Cinderella fairy tale life story. Like Marissa said there are ways she can talk about certain things without giving too much and protecting her privacy. I'm not going to even list what I'd like her to talk about because I know for sure she's not going touch these topics.

Re: Caution - now that we've had some time (89,274) (89,295) by Licia from USA
The only songs I play from Cation are 8th Grade, One Mo Gin, and The Distance. I occasionally listen to the last 2 minutes of A No No when I need a chuckle. Caution is still a decent album although I no longer listen to the whole album.

Bill did you try to shade CB? I'm going to fight you. Lol.

The voices Mariah and Whitney (89,294) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
Both Whitney and Mariah have blessed the world with their incredible instruments. Whitney had a raw power and confidence in her voice that still remains unmatched. Mariah has a range that could play along with her power which makes both of their voices godly. But Whitney could command a stage with her voice like no other and that is where Mariah needed strength but during her prime her voice was out of this world. As artists Mariah is the benchmark between the two her catalog is more versatile Whitney left us a strong catalog as well but it seems one note. But if I have to go off just voice alone Whitney wins in the category of power and rawness. Mariah wins when it comes to range and musicality in my opinion while I appreciate both ladies in their primes Whitney was a little more discipline and stronger but overall for me I prefer Mariah more.

I agree. Mariah has the most octaves, but Whitney had the strongest voice.

Re: Mariah's memoir (89,278) (89,292) by Mara from United States
Great question for discussion Marissa. I want her to go into the earlier years. The years that formed Mariah Carey the songwriter that wrote Close My Eyes, songs like The Wind as well. I think there is a lot to her story that formed who she is today from those days of moving around from Huntington Long Island. I also would love to hear more about how she got through the Tommy years, Nightmare era and anything she would like to share about her years with Nick. Her love for Christmas and who Miss You Most is inspired from. Such a poignant song at such a young age, clearly the lyrics are in mind of someone, perhaps her dad? Also would love to hear her thoughts about the industry and the ones that run it or any inside scoop preferably referring to the likes of Chaka Khan's type of comments from Larry King and the evil people on how the music industry is run. We already know this, but we know Mariah has inside info whether she feels able to say anything is another story. Her friendship and info shared with George Michael during those Sony days, her experience with fertility as I have been there. Basically anything she decides to share, as a career long fan, I would love to read. I just hope it's sooner than later.

Re: Mariah's memoir (89,285) (89,290) by Marissa from USA
The good thing about a memoir is the format of it might force her to go into more detail about certain things. Sure, she can pull off being vague in a 5 minute interview, but for a possibly 300+ page book, she's going to have to say something of significance and this gives me some hope lol. I'm hoping that her agreeing to write a book after almost 30 years of not doing anything that in-depth is a sign that she has accepted that she's going to have to open up more for this to be worth people's coins and attention. This isn't like Mariah's World where she could deflect the attention away from herself and have members of her entourage take the spotlight so she could remain semi-private. Memoirs are about one person, so there's nowhere to hide. I'm not expecting an abundance of jaw-dropping revelations that pinpoint and expose specific people, but I want it to be candid, personal and fresh. I also agree that she can talk about her love life without it coming across as scandalous and TMI. I really want to know what she learned, how she grew, and how she felt about her relationships, and if she doesn't want to talk about relationships (Jeter, Miguel, etc.), I think her marriages were too significant to gloss over. I think she can pull that off without having to detail every argument she's had with her lovers or other deeply personal information, so I'm not going to rule out the possibility of it being discussed yet.

Mariah, the voice, Carey (89,289) by anonymous from UK
So, as per usual, I have been watching YouTube today, and it knows I love MC more than any other. I always click on videos I've never seen before as, even if they are criticisms or bad vocals or performances, I want to be clued up and see/hear it. A few observations come from this.

First up - I respect everyone's opinion (if based on validity and not just going at others) and Special K, I have to respect you and also say, I worship Whitney's voice. It's just too good. But. And I have to say this. As much as I respect your opinion and feeling, my own perspective is genuinely that nobody ever has been or ever will be as incredible a vocalist as Mariah. Whitney's voice was phenomenal, bombastic, OTT stupendous. If there had never been a Mariah Carey? Whitney wins hands down. But there is Mariah, and why I enjoy this discussion and debate so much is simply because it is a discussion, nobody can prove anybody right or wrong because there is no right or wrong. Mariah's music and voice, just touches me in a way that I can't even put into words. It's like she reads me from the inside out, and drags my feelings into reality. I grew up in a household dominated by Whitney Houston records, and I just loved that. But when I got to an age where I was the one listening to the music, Mariah was the one who changed me. My mom is Whitney and I'm Mariah (not via talent but my mom was a singer and I'm, well, not but it was so great to have such voices around me growing up). Like I mentioned though, I love that these conversations exist, and I'm super happy that we got to talk about two extraordinary artists on this fansite without unnecessary battles.

Second point, going on from my frequent trips to YouTube, I saw a video today about the evolution of Mariah and more specifically, her voice. I will say straight up that nobody ever has sounded, before or since, more out of this world ethereal as MC between 90-96. However. If she had carried that exact same perfection into her almost 30 years in the music industry, she would be absolutely boring. There is so much speculation and wonder around her now, it creates a legend. From the speculation about what changed her voice, the question of whether she can even sing a note anymore to the bizarre yet wonderful conspiracy that a different person replaced her in 1997, that's what creates a legend. Someone who just sings flawlessly forever and gains numerous accolades from that has no need to showcase a personality. In fact, I know so many here believe the reason she is so hated because of her "diva" attitude, but I think it's more about the fact that when she first debuted, and for many years later, she sounded so ethereally incredible, it was so great got nasty little people to pick up that not only was she human, but sometimes couldn't control the voice that most people would die to have. Personally, I think she still showcases moments of vocal brilliance that couldn't be duplicated, but she is now a charisma. Not one of us here knows truly what she sings or what she says or how she presents herself is live or accurate (none of us can because we ain't there), but who Mariah is now is truly an icon simply because she is shrouded in myth and legend. A legend isn't created because they are simply too perfect, in voice and behaviour to be questioned; a legend is formed because of the simple fact that nobody outside of the close circle has any idea about the truth, the character, and the life of said legendary person. I've said it before and I'll say it again; as eccentric and kooky and weird as Mariah is, that's what makes up her appeal as legendary. And make no mistake, she is a legend.

Mariah and Whitney (89,288) by Randy from USA
At the risk of starting this debate for the umpteenth time, Special K, I sort of agree and disagree with you. During their primes, here is the truth, Mariah had the better voice. Whitney was the better singer. It has been well documented by producers that MC had a voice that was astonishing but often would doubt herself and re-record her vocals until they were perfect. She left nowhere to go live and then was so self conscious she couldn't let loose on stage. Whitney was the queen of improvisation and commanding an audience. Mariah sings like the record and doesn't do much else. Even if you look at Unplugged she gave you the Emotions intro and the rest of the concert sounds like you pressed play on the CD backstage. Oh she was singing live but she didn't do anything different from the records. And don't get me started on that Hero video from the Theater in 93. Whitney may have had the smaller range. But she def played with the song and did runs and riffs and extended notes and the band followed her.

I want to hear about her childhood. Remember at one point she said if she talked about what happened in her childhood nobody would believe it? I think the book will be watered down though. Her ego and wanting to remain private about so many things ain't gonna let it be the whole truth.

Mimi can't battle. They were both great in their prime. There are too many other greats, but Aretha is the greatest. We need a best dancer video of Mimi and Whitney from the 90's. Whitney liming like a pogo stick and M doing the running man.

Re: Mariah's memoir (89,278) (89,285) by Dove from United States
I want it to be like Jewel's memoir. I want to know about her personal relationships, she knows how to keep it classy while still spilling the tea. But not if she's just going to gloss over and say what she always says. I want a chapter each on Tommy, Nick, Damizza, Luis Miguel, and Derek Jeter, and whoever her first love was. Good times and bad, rise and fall. A chapter on how being a mom changed her, a chapter each on her childhood and teenhood. Life changing moments. Expand on the whole Glitter breakdown moment. I guess a chapter each on her life broken down by eras: Ingenue (debut, Emotions, Unplugged) Girl Next Door (Music Box, Merry Christmas, Daydream) Bombshell (Butterfly, Rainbow, Glitter) Emancipated Woman (Charmbracelet, TEOM, E=MC2), Elusive Chanteuse (Memoirs, MCIIY, MIAM). If songs are about certain people, either tell us straight out or allude to it. What is her biggest regret in life?

Re: When You Don't Believe (89,265) (89,283) by Morgan from United States
Just here to say that when Dreamworks auctioned off the rights to "When You Believe", Columbia won out, not Arista. That's why it wasn't included on her Whitney's Greatest Hits. She couldn't legally include it on her album.

That was also a pretty shitty post. If Whitney was a bitch, then Mariah is the Regina George of bitches. Whitney just said hers outright while Mariah uses expert shade and holds onto her feuds, even fueling them at times. Whitney did more collaborations with females than any other 90's divas (Mariah, Deborah Cox, Faith Evans, Kelly Price, Aretha Franklin, Brandy, CeCe Winans, giving Monica the mic during Classic Whitney, bringing out Angie Stone, Monica, etc at the Arista anniversary, bringing Mary J. Blige as her guest to Divas 99) so she wasn't in doubt of her talent or insecure about others. Remember that video of her cheering on Madonna's Super Bowl performance from a restaurant? Or even complimenting Christina Aguilera's horrible "Run to You" rendition. This is not somebody who didn't give props when they were due or give support when she felt the need. She was revered but was also down-to-earth and well liked by other artists. So that whole posts just came across as an unnecessary rant that was based off your personal feelings while not considering the reality of things.

Re: Mariah's memoir (89,278) (89,282) by Bill from the UK
I'm not holding out much hope for anything about her personal relationships she's had, and to be frank I'd rather than stay between her and her partners rather than her airing her dirty laundry in public. Plus, she's got so many NDAs flying around she can't say anything beyond the vague answers she's already given.

My hope for the memoirs is that they are about the early days pre-fame, and her songwriting and musicianship when crafting her songs. The stories behind them, what they meant to her, how they came about, (caps) why Slipping Away wasn't on Daydream (end caps) and tidbits and nuggets along those lines.

Plus it'll be great to have her confirm in writing that Thirsty is about Damizza and not Nick.

Mariah's memoir (89,278) by Marissa from USA
I was just thinking the other day that I am so excited for her memoir to come out. I'm still surprised that she's even doing this because she can be very vague and elusive about her life, so this should be interesting. I want to hear her side of the story regarding her marriage and divorce from Nick and what she learned from that relationship. I also want to know how she felt about the nightmare era and what her mindset was for her to allow herself to get tangled up into such a situation. What stories do you all either want her to tell for the first time, or what stories that she's already told are you hoping that she will expand on in the book?

Every track is a winner. Giving Me Life, One Mo Gen and The Distance are my top 3. I hope Mariah's next album continues the trend of being short, punchy and concise with no filler (sideways glance at Charmbracelet).
