Re: Mariah: queen of the redo (84,808) (84,841)

Randster, I've seen Whitney live and whilst she was obviously vocally a powerhouse I found her singing as obnoxious as her interviews sometimes (on which she had two emotions: stare and talk quietly like she was on a comedown and going to kill someone or feign complete over the top faux happiness like she'd just come up). Not everything had to be a competition or a display of volume. I Will Always Love You moves from easy listening to something quite stressful to hear, for example. But the volume she projected over Mariah at the Academy Awards was, arguably, quite rude. Mariah didn't shoot her a look for nothin'. Rude was something Whitney did well. I saw her live on the My Love Is Your Love tour and she made sarcastic comments to the crowd for not knowing her more obscure songs that well. It was quite very uncomfortable. But she could sing, and some of her songs are amazing (All The Man That I Need, I Believe In You And Me, I Look To You, and so on). She was unique. Even if a bit too shouty.

I can't lie (84,839)
by george golden from uk

Only Mariah Carey would release a great upbeat song with a boring video and boring song with a great video. Why are these last ten years full of flops? Does she also want to hold the record for most flops? Why can't she get it right anymore? I love Mariah but it's just sad where we are now. Sorry I can't lie and say everything is great because it really is not.

So if it's the weakest song why release it as a lead single? I have been a fan since 1992 and it's very disappointing where Mariah is creatively. Sloppy and lazy decisions. Alcohol and lingerie have taken center stage. Pure trash.

I feel you on this one. Why did she need him in the writing session? Sometimes MC makes me pull out what little hair that I have left with these unknown songwriters and rookie rappers. I have never heard of him before. I guess he will get his $3,000 dollar check deposited in his account by March. Maybe one day JD should sneak Walter Afanasieff into the studio and leave them there to hash out their differences and resume making magic again. Before JD leaves, he should tell Mariah that she is in excellent hands and say forgive him. But I know I am dreaming. Hell will freeze over before that ever happens. Lol. We need beautiful magic for MC15 and not fluffy weak album tracks with a JD protegee.

The Walter saga continues (84,836)

I can definitely say that M and Walter made timeless songs but I also understand why M has decided to move on from that situation as well and as fans we should at least do our best to respect it. With Walter she lost not only a collaborator but someone who she really thought was a friend and someone that she could trust and obviously for him it was about business which I am ok with that too. To be honest who is to say what chemistry they would have if they worked together today no one really knows and for me I would rather M work with people who she is comfortable with and trust at this point over anything else because she seems to be a great place and that is that we have all missed for her, for quite some time. I truly believe that we are in for a musical treat with this new album I believe that it will satisfy every single one of us different levels but we just have to wait and see.

Really strange. I don't like that this guy brings alcohol to the studio. After a recording session (if everything is done), I don't mind if the artist will have a drink because the "project" is done and to celebrate it. But to drink cognac or whisky shots for a singer like Mariah just no. I mean she's not a Rock singer. That's pure poison for the voice. Even wine wouldn't be helpful. I can't understand that a professional is allowing this. A rapper or a producer might get no problems by taking some shots but a singer? It's just not good at all to be honest.

I reckoned that too, Mariah used to make humming birds flapping their wings look like kiwi birds. What happened with that energy, I don't know. I think she just changed her style. In the beginning she used to have that "washing the windows" style, she called it like that haha. At first I attributed it to her shoulder problem but then again she still has her other arm. She seems quite robotic lately. I want to think and believe that her "With You" performance was live, as it does sound different from the original track, and that's the reason she played it safe.

I believe it comes from Mariah tendency to perfectionism which can have a high price to pay as it makes the person become obsessive and compulsive. She said at times she wasn't happy with her first album and she would wanted to change things over and over. She said once she hated some of her lives because she thinks after them "I could have done this different". Probably one of the reasons her early tour videos are dubbed.

Maybe that's a good thing. Maybe she'll finally get her surprise release. Right after the AMAs was a good time to do it but then she didn't. I'd rather have her drop the album out of nowhere to prevent leaks that may happen if she were to stick to a release date. I remember how MIAMTEC came out as a torrent more than 24 hours before its official release. When you don't sell as much as you used to, piracy becomes an even bigger issue for you. Announcing an album title or date of release gives enough hackers information to search for possible weaknesses in the record company's release strategy and intercept it. Still, Mariah should release it before the holidays officially kick in as that period isn't exactly favorable for most albums.

Outstanding post and analogy. Couldn't agree more. Not to mention the fact that Mariah could belt as good as most back in the day too. She was angelic on one hand and a beast when she needed to be on the other. There's never been a singer like 90s Mariah and there never will be. Yes, we'll have people influenced by her or who can do things similar to or like she has done, but they can never, nor will ever be able to have the repertoire, skill, or talent of Mariah. There's only one Mariah Carey. Don't ever get it twisted. Whitney could blow. So can Chaka, Aretha, J Hud, Patti etc. They are all amazing singers, but Mariah at her best is in a league of her own.

A new era, a new Mariah (84,826)
by Tijl from Belgium

The more I listen to "With You", the more it grows on me. This happened many times before with every new Mariah single. The woman knows what she is doing. The layering of her voice and the sophistication of her songwriting and use of vocabulary is simply lost in the contemporary musical landscape. I stop comparing with her previous work and just enjoy what she is currently creating. The video is just beautiful. The Mariah I see is the woman I fell in love with years ago. A far cry from the empty eyed zombie during the reign of Stella. She is glowing and radiates a joy for life. As my BFF mentioned she oozes old Hollywood glamour with serious Marilyn Monroe vibes. She is still here and she gets noticed 28 years in her career. I don't think we'll know about Taylor Swift or Rihanna in 20 years.

There's a massive, noticeable difference in the quality of vocals of When You Believe when compared against Sweetheart, I Still Believe and DYKWYGT - all recorded during the same period. That's all I'm saying.

At least he is loyal unlike Walter, and his career is only going stronger unlike Walter who hasn't had a hit since the 90s. Walter needs Mariah, Mariah doesn't need Walter. Thank you for this amazing song Mariah, ugh can't wait for the rest, I believe a remix is also coming out soon, let's not forget that Fresco posted a pic a while ago, and they even tagged Ty Dolla sign.

The video didn't gather 1 million views in 2 days. Interestingly, her AMAs video performance has more views than the regular video, and if you add them up you get to the 1 million. She should've released it just before the AMAs.

Mariah was having her period. It is very well known among classical female singers to schedule important performances around it if possible. I used to study classical singing and my teacher also told me this. It can change your voice to be weaker, hoarser and less easily controlled. It does not always happen to a great degree and people and their bodies are all different, but it is a real thing.

He couldn't afford a plane ticket, but he could afford to bring Hennessy to the studio and it ends up being written about in the song. This is who she trades in Walter Afanasieff for? Trash like this?

I also remember how upset Mariah was when the "wrong" version of TAOLG was uploaded on Facebook. For most of the people, there was no difference between the two versions but she was not happy with that fact. She's an obsessive perfectionist. Just like many other artists, e.g. Michael Jackson or Prince who were working on their material for years and were never 100% satisfied. I don't mean it is wrong, but this obsession with perfection makes her creative process difficult, she definitely needs some kind of advisor, like Tommy, to tell her when it's good enough.
