Jimmy Fallon (86,169)
by 123 from USA

Was this all live? For once? I was for sure she'd lip the belts like the not so good performances of the song in Asia but this performance was solid. I saw her take a drink of splash that morning in a radio interview and figured she'd lip but she sounded and looked great. There is a lyric video for this song now so they might just decide to push it. It's the most mass appeal song on the album. Would also love A No No as a single as well.

Re: Caution vs MIAMTEC (86,104) (86,168)

You nailed it right on the head. MIAM had stronger songs with hit potential but it had its fair share of filler that I always skip with badly studio engineered vocals on some songs (OMT, Heavenly, etc). Each song is listenable to on Caution and has no filler. The songs are not as strong but individually and as a whole they work well and leaves you wanting more. Caution is the first album she is getting rave reviews from the critics. Even Rolling Stone gave it 4 out of 5 stars. Happy the critics are finally recognizing her pen game and I keep reading things like fresh when they describe the album. She’s finally being respected by reviewers. Even that Showbiz guy who bashes her at every turn gave a positive review.

I've heard that but doesn't the record company keep track of how many copies it ships to stores, irregardless of how they are rung up at the register? I want the cool vinyl (blue and pink) and a physical CD as I'm old school and like tanglible things. The smell of a new booklet, reading the lyrics, songwriting and production credits. So I'm waiting to get my physical copy to post my actual review. It's getting harder to understand what she is singing these days. Anyway, you can always just stream from any of the streaming formats. More cost effective if you don't have much funds and want to help with album sales. I don't care if she gets a #1 album myself but I do like all the cool versions like the cassette tape, different color vinyls, and alternate covers. They actually made it worth while and fun to buy multiple copies as you can get unique versions with this album. To each his own as long as your happy with what you spent your money on.

I started cackling when he stopped singing, but his voice was still going. If she lipped any of her parts you really couldn't tell. I hate her having to lip, but if she needs to, at least make it look convincing. Who's school of lip syncing did Live Nation make her attend? Lol.

I'm loving 8th Grade. I didn't even realize it was a Timbaland production until he talked at the end. They did a great job on that one. It's just so smooth and groovy to listen to. I'm killing everyone playing the same three songs back to back (The Distance, One Mo Gen, and 8th Grade). Like I can't just listen to these once. I have to repeat each one before I move on to the next song.

So glad there's another person out there in this world who "gets" To The Floor and what a stroke of genius it truly is. Anyway, back to One Mo' Gen.

by B from USA

|
|
Even if Caution doesn't debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 it will debut in the To 10 and at #1 on the R&B album chart. Mariah currently occupies the top four spot on Amazon's Best Sellers in Soul with 1. The Distance 2. A No No 3. With You 4. GTFO.

Caution (as objective as possible) (86,156)
by Ronnie from California
| |
|
|
1. GTFO Pros: The sassy lyrics make this one worth a listen. Mariah feels organic when she isn't taking herself too serious. The way she sings over the sample proves Mariah still has an impeccable flow. The addicting "how bout you" cat-calls draw attention to her use of melodically driven adlibs. There are some Mariah "orchestra"* moments during the main chorus which had a heavenly blend between her voice and the production (* refer to Babydoll). Cons: The lyrics can be juvenile and do not fail to have the Mariah SAT words randomly thrown in there. The Jamaican accent was too reminiscent of the island music trend. The vocals were underwhelming but they were not necessary on this song.
2. With You Pros: The climax of this song is the closest we got to a 1997-2005 Mariah climax. Everytime I hear the climax of the song I get memories of the Mariah orchestra she used on her masterpiece "Underneath the Stars". The second verse was a nice variation of the melody she uses in the first verse. Cons: The melody can be subpar during the first verse. The repetitive "with you" can sometimes feel silly. The chorus feels lackluster until we reach the climax. The vocals were good (esp for her current condition) but it took a while to get there.
3. Caution Pros: The melodic flow of this song is intriguining almost throughout the entire song. The throwback to Aaliyah 2000's R&B sounds modern and clean. The lyrics are more memorable than most of the songs on the album - I have an easier time remembering the lyrics attached to the melody during the chorus rather than just a melody. The ad libs and background vocals are almost always in the right place. We got a whistle. The track is sexy and Mariah shows why she is a melodically driven writer. Cons: The first melody is not interesting and it doesn't begin to get interesting until she starts the line "I try to resist...". Considering, that is only 10 secs, I hardly find it a con. The bridge was underwhelming. One specific upper belt belt before the bridge was noticeably sour.
4. A No No Pros: Mariah makes full use of the Lil Kim sample. This song is a playground for her melodies. The lyrics are classic post CB Mariah, oddly specific references yet somehow relatable enough to make it a universal anthem. I love that BIG was added to the song but it lingered a tad too long. When the choir comes in, I get small memories of Mariah's gospel moments. Cons: Mariah's ad libs could be silly at times "Japanese for you". It should have been sped up by about 15% and was missing clear room for harmonies. It doesn't have Mariah vocals (not entirely needed on this song but would have been nice).
5. The Distance Pros: Once the beat drops the song is secured. There were times when Mariah experimented with her flow and mimicked what is selling today. I wonder if this is Mariah showing that she can easily do what people are so impressed by. The moment where she tangles the cheer in the last chorus has traces of what makes songs like Crybaby so great. One of her better vocal moments. Cons: The song feels insecure during the more simplistic first section of the song. This makes it feel like she recieved the beat before writing the melody, making her rely on the beat more than her writing ability. The melody is relatively repetitive but it's a dynamic one.
Cutting it here for length.

Post for Mariah (86,154)
by T from USA

I hope everyone has posted a pic with their review of Caution on their Facebook/Instagram/Twitter. Mariah needs some help on the promo front. She's doing a lot on her own but if we can somehow get the word out with her it just might help sell more copies in the first week. Might help with better streaming. Now's the time to do it.

She got very emotional towards the end of the song. If you listen closely at the end, you can hear where she is about to cry. The voice will crack when you are about to cry. Portrait is one her saddest songs ever. One of my album favorites right now. It makes me wanna cry because I can understand what she feeling in the song. I walk around everyday feeling like people and family members don't like me or understand me. I can tell that I rub some of you the wrong way. I am sorry if I do, I don't mean to. I overcompensate in a lot things that I do or say to make people like me. I reflect everyday on the portrait of my life. Please don't judge me.

How cute is it. For my birthday a few weeks back I got it as a gift (I also was given a full life sized cardboard cutout of Mariah which is giving me life). Was so hard to decide on keeping the Mariah figure in its box or taking it out of it. Decided eventually to take her out and put her beside a little Christmas tree as I already put my decorations up.

First I love the song. For me it's the saddest song after "Looking in" and "Petals". I hear so much pain on it, it's almost heartbreaking. But honestly what is going on with her voice? At the end it sounds almost like it hurts to sing it that way.

Jared that sounds like such an exciting moment for you. So did your shirt light up then after she sang or what? How funny. I geeked out way worse, and it was the 90s, so all I could meander out was "Mariah I love you, you're the bomb."

If Mariah gets to number one because Caution sold 5 copies more than the number two album, then I will change my stance on people buying multiple copies. I suppose it’s your hard earned money and you can do what you wish with it, but if you want to support Mariah, maybe donate the 30 dollars to the Fresh Air Fund, or one of the other organisations she champions. But who am I.

Well, I bought a CD because I like the sound quality in my car and it didn't have Bluetooth. With Amazon they usually also autorip to my Amazon player and I can stream it there or download it, but it didn't. I just noticed her website is selling limited editions such as a cassette, picture disc vinyls, and the alternate cover with the M, and these include a download. So, I may get something like that and display it and have the download on my phone. Haven't decided yet. And I may buy a CD or vinyl for my sister as a Christmas gift. Irregardless people earn their money and are free to spend it as they please.

Why do you want to but multiple copies of the same album? So that Mariah gets even richer than she already is? Or so that she debuts higher on the Billboard Hot 100? I thought you all said you didn't care about the charts anymore.

Multiple copies / Jimmy Fallon (86,145)
by Chicago Lamb from USA
| |
|
|
Firstly, Lambs: Be reminded if you purchase multiple physical CD's, make sure they are rung up on separate receipts. Somebody I follow on Twitter said otherwise the extra copies won't count.
Secondly, Mariah was great on Jimmy Fallon but did she pull an Aretha by singing with Ty Dolla $ign on his part?
