Proud, bi-polar openness (81,769) by Matty from Vancouver Canada
So proud of Miss Mimi for opening up about her long battle with bi-polar. Good for her. She's struggled privately out in the complete open for years, I am so happy that our emancipated butterfly can now live publicly in her true reality.

Next step (81,768) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
Since Mariah is now so vocal about personal issues, maybe she can next address her voice issues so that people lay off her a bit. Just admit that the voice has changed, which is normal especially since her songs that she is singing for years put so much on her voice. I wouldn't be surprised if that comes next and it'll make me more proud. People need to see her as just a normal human being who achieved fame and success through her immense talent and hard work, not a ditzy diva who is full of herself. Here's to a new beginning and a new, more open Mariah Carey.

Mariah - first off, we are all so very proud of you. What a courageous thing to do at this stage. You must feel liberated and that a big weight has finally been lifted off you. To be carrying that around all those years in secret, especially being too afraid to address it fearing being outed must have been so isolating. You are such a strong woman and any kind of mental illness, depression or anything for that matter is nothing to be ashamed of and can happen to anyone. Mental illness knows no class, race, sexual preference or whatever. Us fans who know you best always knew when you were going through something and we prayed for your health and well being all the time. I do think her breaking ties with the Russian clan has made her feel very vulnerable to a headline and she took this issue into her own hands on her time in her way. We are so proud of you Mariah and hope you pour it all into your next album. Make it therapeutic to you. Watching the performances of Hero wiping tears numerous times has totally taken on a new meaning.

Re: (81,759) (81,766) by Lila from United States
I'm glad you got help. I also struggle with anxiety and depression and have a habit of bottling it up. I had to go to therapy and work through it but I kept everything bottled up for so long because it can be so awkward talking to people, at least for me, but I had to do what I had to do. I couldn't put it off any longer. Bottling it up was making everything way worse; I was cracking under the pressure.

I agree and good for you too. I have been hoping Mimi would reflect and even better with the therapy to help guide her along.

Re: Stella (old team) - bi-polar announcement (81,754) (81,764) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Tyler I think the same like you. Mariah was hiding it for so long, why is she telling now? I have a feeling that her old team was preparing something against her. The witch and her circus. Like you said they were with her 24/7. So Mariah decided to speak openly to end the plans of Crustella. I hope they will keep quiet and never be heard again. Her image is still not recovered because of her "old team".

Re: Mental health (81,746) (81,763) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Since when is Mariah struggling from it? The article says 2001 where she had the breakdown. I wonder if something caused the mental disorder at this time? (Pressure, stress, the divorce with the "side effects" and so on.) I mean before 2001 Mariah seemed confident, so humble, a sensitive woman with a healthy inner middle. To think she has such problems since so long, is really heartbreaking. But that she feels better now is of course great. I think she'll have another "Butterfly" moment soon. to MC.

Mental health and current team (81,762) by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
First of all, I have got to give Mariah credit for opening about her disorder. Mental health issues are unfortunately still a stigma and powerful successful women like Mariah speaking about their issues will pave the way for it to be more normalized and help a lot of people suffering from it get some confidence and comfort. I'm sure on Mariah's part it wasn't easy either since she always wants to maintain this untouchable, perfect, goddess diva image, and now to suddenly talk about her vulnerability and perhaps one of her biggest secrets so openly, it's not easy. So I'm happy to see this. Not only will this help create awareness and help people see Mariah in a different light, it will also allows her to take the narrative of her disorder in her own hands instead of leeches around her, like her brother and possibly Stella trying to make a quick buck off selling this story to the tabloids by sensationalizing it. For this I give props to her current team. Her previous teams along with Mariah herself had always maintained that untouchable image (which has started to turn the general public off) while her new team is making her look more like a person you can relate to by getting her to open up about her insecurities and actively participate in social agendas like the "Me Too" movement and other things. Mariah herself will feel liberated by letting go of her previous "perfect" image (which must be frustrating to maintain) and embracing the current, more vocal, more relatable Mariah. It's a win win. Go Mariah, Go Team MC. In the famous words of Kris Jenner "You are doing amazing sweetie."

Bi polar (81,761) by Terna from Nigeria
I'm so so proud of Mariah. This is a major step for her and to think she suffered in silence alone for so long. Wow. For someone of her caliber this is a big step she's taken. She's truly in a good place right now and her healing has begun. I'm so glad her true Lambily showed her love through her darkest times and continues to today. It must have been what kept her going. Much love Mariah.

Yes, agreed. People can live "normal lives" despite the diagnosis/diagnoses. With everything that you have experienced and what you are achieving, you seem pretty inspiring as well.

As someone who has also battled mental illness, I completely understand. I'm proud of Mariah to admit this condition is a part of who she is. I kept my battles with anxiety and depression hidden. I was afraid to open up for fear of rejection and/or being vulnerable. When I finally opened up to my parents because I couldn't keep it hidden any longer, the weight lifted off my shoulders was huge. I got the help I needed and am doing fine today. I'm happy for Mariah. She'll get the help she needs and come back stronger than ever. She's got a great support system in Nick and her kids, even if she's not married to him anymore. You know he's got her back. Proud of you, Mariah. You've got this.

Re: Bi Polar 2 (81,749) (81,756) by Anonymous from
Yes I agree, it's not deemed as "severe" however each diagnosis has a spectrum with varying degrees from mild to extreme. The likes of depression is considered not as "severe" when compared to schizophrenia however it can be just as destructive. Serve conditions are considered harder to treat, and recovery where possible is longer. The impact that mental illness can have varies from one person to another, it can not be measured nor discounted no matter what the diagnosis is. Everyone is different.

Re: Bipolar (81,753) (81,755) by MusicfanJ from Germany
I am watching the news on tv, and even there it is a "headline". I couldn't believe my eyes while reading it. As most of you I thought something is "wrong" during the last two years. It was so obvious. But that she shares this with the public is really a step I wouldn't thought of. How brave to share such a private thing. I really hope the people will understand her a little more and won't judge her for it. Mental things are still some kind of a taboo. If your arm is broken, everybody will feel sorry for you, but if there's a mental thing a lot of people just don't understand it. Anyway I wish her the best, that she can feel happy again and that the new people take care of her and she for herself. We you Mariah. The lambily is so proud of you.

Stella (old team) - bi-polar announcement (81,754) by Tyler from USA
I never wanted to mention her name again but I am confident Stella and the old team were going to use the whole bi-polar thing as blackmail. Stella and her family were around her 24/7 and I am sure they had pictures of medication, videos or other things they were going to use. I can only imagine the burden of waking up each day not knowing if today was the day you were going to be exposed. This is so freeing on so many levels. The line in IWYW "But you can't manipulate me like before" has a whole new meaning. Sidenote - I wonder if James Packer going into a mental facility had anything to do with Mariah coming out around the issue. He may have given her the courage to do so.

Bipolar (81,753) by Bill from the UK
Like you all, I am so proud of Mariah for opening up about her struggles. The fact she has kept this hidden for years and has no doubt struggled without our support for so long breaks my heart. I am so glad that she has shared this, but I wish so much that she had done so back in 2001, so that she could have seen straight away that, for us at least, it matters not. We will always love her and always cherish what she has given us, and nothing will ever change that. Well done Mariah. I am so hopeful and optimistic for the future.

Mental health (81,752) by Tameka walker from United states
I am glad she is opening up about her mental illness. I am a big Mariah fan and I love her no matter what. Just by her coming out I feel like I can come to every one here. Just because she has a mental illness that doesn't define her. I also would like to say that I personally have been battling mental illness. I have scizoaffective disorder. That is when you suffer from depression and be hearing voices in your head and seeing faces. Plus I also suffer from obsessive compulsion disorder. Mental illness runs in my family. I have always been a fan of Mariah because she has one of the best voices in the known world plus I love her songwriting game. She is simply the best at what she does. Getting back to the mental illness I struggled with that for years I felt so ashamed of having a mental illness. I tried to hide it. Seeing that my favorite singer have mental illness shows that it can happen to anyone. I am in treatment and I take medication. For my illness I am a college graduate and I am looking for a job. People who suffer with mental illness can live normal lives

Bipolar disorder (81,751) by Tiina from Finland
What a brave human being she is. I am so proud of her for telling her story and so happy that she is advocating mental health care. I remember back when we discussed whether Mariah was bipolar on this messageboard a few years ago. I didn't believe it back then. I thought that she just lived a life of extremes because of the nature of her profession. I am bipolar type 1 myself, diagnosed at 18. Her music was a source of light and hope during the roughest years of my life when I too felt isolated and ashamed. In interviews and through her music she always kept saying believe in yourself, which meant the world to me. I loved her like the big sister I never had and identified with her, which was comforting. The fact that Mariah is coming out as bipolar feels so personal to me. It shocked me because it actually made me take a step back and look at myself in a new light because this person that I've admired and idolized for so long who is also bipolar but who is incredibly talented and successful. This is incredible, she is going to reach so many people who are suffering alone and she will inspire them to get help and to commit to taking care of themselves.

Sucks that she hid it for so long, but I'm so glad she's finally in a good place where she can admit it and that she's working to get better.

Bi Polar 2 (81,749) by Chicago Lamb from USA
Bi Polar 2 is not as severe as the "Bi-Polar" (Bi-Polar 1) and its accompanying stigma. Google it. An album must be near, as we have to assume her team has her in the news for a good reason. I'm glad she's come public with such a personal reveal. Reminds us once again, she's only human.

Re: Bipolar (81,744) (81,748) by Anonymous from
This explains so much. One of the bravest things you can do in life is admitting to having issues, especially when in relation to mental health. To live with the prejudice and stigma associated with it, never mind trying to find the right balance of medication and therapy, whilst the world anticipates a fall must have been hard. The weight of carrying this in secrecy for years is colossal and damaging.
It's a horrible feeling knowing that something so personal and painful could potentially be used against you, I'm so proud that Mariah has taken ownership. She is just like the rest of us, we are all susceptible to mental illness. Easily one of my proudest moments of hers.

Mental health (81,746) by CMC from NY,NY
I'm beyond proud of Mariah. I thought I could not love her more but I do. The courage it takes to share something like that is astounding and she is only going to flourish and blossom more. I've alwsys had the speculation there, her brother in recent years has said she has been taking bipolar meds since 2001. Having experience with the disorder in my family, seeing Mariah through the years, it explains so much of her behavior. I'm still a little shocked that she's chosen to share it, this is a whole new Mariah and I would hope the public would have nothing but acceptance and suppport for her sharing such a deep part of her self that has such a stigma around it. I love you Mariah.

Bipolar disorder (81,745) by Gee from U.S.A. (New York City)
Let me start off by saying I personally do not have bipolar disorder myself but I know people that suffer from it. As a society we tend to make fun of mental health and this is why many people suffering, suffer through it in silence. I am glad that MC is now strong enough to deal with her diagnosis head she is getting the treatment she needs. It would not surprise if her old team did not try and blackmail her by trying to sell a story. More importantly I believe her children have helped her come to terms with things as well because she wants to be the best support system and mother she can be. I just happy that she is getting the proper care and doing productive things to keep her on track. Bravo MC for standing up for yourself and others who maybe going through this and are suffering in silence. But once again you have proven yourself to be an inspiration to many.
