I said it before and I'm saying again, Mariah hates that Daydream era and all it stood for (ok maybe hate is too strong a word but an adjective close), it's the reason she avoids singing songs from that album like a plague. Lol. The only ray of light from that time was Jermaine Dupri, DaBrat and the creation of "Always be my baby" which she never seems to miss an opportunity to sing. (Didn't they escape "Sing Sing" for like a whole day without Tommy's looming bodyguards? And then Tommy threw a fit when they came back.) It must've been that day she decided she was leaving. Mariah was in a prison just without bars and a whole lot of comfort but even that for an adult can still feel suffocating or claustrophobic when you don't have the liberty that comes with being independent. (Dressing the way you please, going where you please, hanging out with friends etc.) Jermaine and DaBrat talked some sense into her and that's why she's still friends with those two until today. I'm actually proud of her for breaking free. We got a masterpiece - "Butterfly", she a career defining album and her magnum opus. Fact: Mariah has never (all caps) sung "Melt Away" live.

Bill I think the same. All her album titles have meanings. Wow the daydream thing with the smile is hard. I always have to think about the comment where Mariah said she was fantasizing to get kidnapped to get out of "Sing Sing". It's so ironic that during the extremely successful Daydream era she was so unhappy. I wonder how the next album would be titled.

Andrew who are you to tell her or anyone else what to experience and where to experience it? Mariah like everyone else is a human being and things are going to effect her in her personal life that may show up in her performances. That's life. Just be thankful that she even chooses to go on stage when she is going through something. Some artist will cancel the show all together. Get over yourself and give her a break. Sad when the writer of this article has more positive things to say than her [censored].

Nice to actually see a positive review, for a change. Maybe the witch hunt to bring her down is starting to end.

Just heard the new Christmas single The Star on twitter. Nothing like AIWFCIY or Oh Santa but for me a great song. Don't know if it's a hit but I think it's perfect for that movie. Tonight at midnight the worldwide release at iTunes etc. but if you want to hear it now go to this account on twitter. Thanks Danielle for sharing.

I thought that about some of her album titles. Since Butterfly, Mariah's always given a reason for the title of her albums and how she arrived at them. Prior, she gave generic answers of "it sounded cool" (Music Box) to the songs all having a dream-like vibe to them (Daydream). I think they were really deeper than that. Knowing what we know now, I think Music Box was how she saw herself. Locked away, only came out to sing pretty songs, then shut back in the box. Daydream because she later said that during that period nothing seemed real to her. The marriage, the success, the adoration. She said during the photo shoot for the album cover she was asked to smile but couldn't bring herself to do it.

I think this is just a testament to have bad things have really gotten. Since 2013 all the fans have ever done was subconsciously lower the bar she set for herself. Really. Every time she's gonna perform live through the years, our reactions went from: 1990-1996: "Whatever happens, she's gonna bring the house down." 1997-2000: "All the hardwork and her new lifestyle is taking a toll on her voice, but she's gonna pull it off." 2001-2004: "She's gonna lip some parts here and there, but she's still gonna wow people." 2005-2009: "Her voice clearly ain't what it used to be, but her newfound confidence still shines through." 2010-2012: "She's becoming a lot less consistent live, and her success on stage is getting increasingly dependent on her lifestyle." 2013-2017: "Her delivery is sounding more labored and she can barely reach the money notes without pushing for them. She has gotten even more stoic and for some reason, whatever she is comfortable doing in her concerts is absent in her TV 'performances'." Things have gotten so bad and half-assed that our brains have been rewired to praise her for the most minimal display of efforts from her regardless of actual payoff. And that is how we have become way too considerate. Because Foxwoods was a lot better that what we've seen from her lately. If she couldn't sing certain parts, then as an expert of vocal saves, it baffles me that Mariah would rather poorly depend so much on prerecorded vocals than find her way around things and switch arrangements. Even Whitney, during her last public performances, was not afraid to keep it real with the fans at the risk of disappointing them. She'd often take breaks, at times even during performances to take a sip of water. Some fans were understandably pissed, but at least she was being honest. And a lot of us would take honesty over all the fuss in the name of keeping up the rotting facade that she can still hit the soaring climaxes with such ease while struggle in the verses that are closer to her speaking voice. And consideration is fine if money isn't part of the equation. People should get at least what they pay for, especially at the price she charges. When you're Mariah Carey, you know people didn't go to your show to see you bust out some moves much less constantly feel yourself all over or awkwardly gyrate against anything vertical. People went there to see you sing, not So you should do whatever it takes to keep your calling card in the best shape possible. Tours can exist without alcohol or constant partying. Getting enough rest is a personal decision. There are real, competent managers that aren't named Stella.

Do you guys occassionally happen to use some of Mimi's catchphrases in your daily lives? I have caught myself having quite some "moments" which sometimes are "freakin' bleak-o-city". What about you?

Do you ever get the feeling that some of Mariah's songs aren't just songs about love and heartbreak but on a deeper level, something more that directly relates to her? This particular song rubs me that way. It's about something more than just a heartbreak regular theme. With lyrics like "I had all my trust in you and look what you put me through", "Somewhere down the line you gon what you deserve you f**king Jerk" and the closing line "Betcha gon know how this feels even if it's the last thing I ever do". Damn. The song is so dark.

That's because they're not happy to see her happy and in a good place but too bad for them she always proves them wrong and stays winning by default. She looks amazing and sounded better than she has this year so far.

I always wished a video had been done for Betcha. A really good, top notch quality one that followed the storyline and had no awkward body touching in it. It would've been so amazing.

Butterfly promo poster? (78,868)
by KJ from USA
| |
|
|
Hi there. I've been a decades long lurker of this website and board, but this is my first post, so I apologize in advance if my request doesn't align with board rules. I've been a longtime fan and collector since Daydream, and with the recent 20th anniversary of Butterfly, I'm somewhat nostalgic for items from that era. Does anyone know where I can purchase the doubled sided 24 x 36 Butterfly promo poster with the original Butterfly album artwork? If you know where I can find one, please send me an email at ajboogie@gmail.com. I greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

I have to agree. I never seem to think of MOAIA as an amazing album, yet songs like Inseparable and Betcha Gon Know are favourites that I keep going back to frequently. Standing O is one of those songs that I can and will start singing randomly no matter where I am. Candy Bling will forever be in my top 5. I love it so much that I can't even listen to it. It strikes a chord. I think the problem with MOAIA (for me) was the many ways in which it was trying to be Butterfly. Nothing can touch Butterfly, not even Mariah. But it's still an effing amazing album.

Betcha gon know / MOAIA (78,866)

Been listening to "MOAIA" a lot lately. Like someone said here, it's a perfect autumn album. "Betcha gon know" is such a gem. Although the mood on this album is a bit dark and I know some of you find the "producing" too much but the lyrics are so cool and for me this album is completely underrated. "Candy Bling" is simply perfection.

Forgive me, but shouldn't Mariah seem happy in all of her concerts? People are paying enormous amounts of money to go to these things. Since when does "it was bad for this reason because Mariah has personal issues" get to be an excuse? If Mariah insists on touring so much she needs to put on a show every night. Half-assed performances are an insult to her fans. Who, for some bizarre reason, make every excuse for her under the sun, while she sips Sangria in a boat off Capri while Tanaka fans her with your cash. People go to see a show, there shouldn't be any "oh her voice wasn't on point" or "oh she looked unhappy" or "oh she must be on meds because she didn't move". She's charging nigh on a fortune for a ticket. It does appear to be a last ditch money maker before retirement. Are people getting their money's worth?

None of them give any factual or useful information. They plant seeds of what they want people to know or believe, factual or not, lol. I used to follow Shawn on Twitter but stopped because I wasn't interested in his life or shallow talk in any way. Since he rarely revealed anything about Mimi or the kids, as he is not allowed, it was of no interest.
