Will from the UK / mea culpa (58,878)

I wanted apologize for going all Stan on you. Sometimes I forget he's in there when I come to MC on this board. I know it's meant to be a discussion and I should've asked what you meant before making assumptions and foaming at the mouth in my post. So much for staying above the fray. I should know better than to post things at 5 am with no sleep. That's why this one is at 4:15 am. On the bright side, rumor has it you were rolling in lols. Better than in the deep, eh? See what sleep deprivation does to me? They're not all gems. (There's a crucifixion brewing, I know it. And not the awful puns.) As far as the points you made: I totally understand what you and this_is_qhm were saying. I was just thinking that at the end of the day this is all music we love. It shouldn't be something people tear into one another over. I'm speaking to myself first. Cheers.

It'll be awesome if Mariah is asked to sing at this year's Oscars in memoriam tribute. Just saying.

I absolutely adore "The beautiful ones". I always felt there should have been a video. Mariah's rock voice sounds so fierce. She went in.

Outside. Oops forgot one, lol. I would also add Breakdown and Circles. I had recently broke up with my ex. I was at a store with my brother and his friend (the love of my life) when my ex walked in with someone new and like Mariah sang I turned my head. Saying to myself don't you let them see you cry and turned my head as the tears rolled down my eyes. I literally heard Mariah singing Circles. Her music is the soundtrack of/to my life.

Great post Anthony. I also did chock up when I first heard "Cry.". Likewise, "Butterfly" is too deep for words, so tears often ensue. And yes, "Outside" has me crying them tears even to this day (I also feel similar to your experience pertaining to this song). In general, the whole "Butterfly" album puts me in a totally different emotional state whenever I listen to it and whenever I'm invested in it fully, to the point that by the end I'm aiming for catharsis. Still, another song that has brought me vehemently to tears is "The Beautiful Ones". It takes you gradually from an inner monologue situation, to a dialogue to a lashing out thing. An unbelievably intense listening experience that one. Oh, and how could I forget? "I Wish You Well". Very "tear-able" song, hits hard. Among a few more, out of the most recent songs, the cover of "One More Try".

Bill the lines "I wish that we could spend the holidays together" is the only bit of any Mariah song that makes me well up. Gets me every time too. Think it's because it's so raw and not schmaltzy.

Adele's songs can be covered well by anyone on YouTube and sometimes surpass Adele's version. Mariah's songs are untouchable. Anyone can cover them but they would always pale in comparison with MC.

Just To Hold You Once Again, One Sweet Day, Forever, Close My Eyes, Petals, Never Too Far, My Saving Grace, We Belong Together, Fly Like A Bird, Side Effects, Languishing, Cry., and Camouflage. Mariah has a song for every emotion. When I'm mad I listen to Did I Do That, Thirsty, and You Had Your Chance.

Celine Dion's performance proved she lips which some commenters claim she doesn't. Same for Adele, she lips. Her remarkable return to the stage at the Grammy's was lipped, she had vocal issues.

Tears (58,866)

Great topic, Randy. I think the first song that ever really got me like an arrow to my heart was Butterfly. The first time I ever heard that, I was still a new Mariah fan, and became a fan because of Through The Rain (fun fact: my first MC album was Charm Bracelet, and the year I became a fan, she did a concert here in the UK, lucky guy). I bought all the albums that I could at the time from record shops, and Butterfly was one of the initial three after Charm Bracelet, the others being Glitter and Music Box. I listened to the Butterfly album first, and even as young as I was, Butterfly (the song) floored me. But the first and one of only a handful of songs that has ever made me actually bawl with tears? Outside, from that same album. Whilst Butterfly touched my heart, Outside danced with my soul. Seriously, to this day, I have never heard a song that I can relate to on such a profound level. As I get older and become more confident and accepting of myself, I'm slowly becoming different to that person, but I'll always be able to relate to that song, because I know how it feels. Special times. On a side note, I cried when I first listened to Cry, just because I thought it was so beautiful. Yes, I am an emotional wreck haha. Happy New Year guys.

I know right? I am sitting here going who cares? Artists have their ups and downs like everyone does. Imagine if the public stopped looking to celebrities and public figures to satisfy drama addiction and perfectionism? Instead of beating each other up, showing some understanding that stuff happens. It's not a big deal. Lol there are much more important things.

When I watched it, Mariah's Rockefeller incident was the first thing that ran through my mind. Celine's tone was beautiful there but her pitch overall was messy there. I thought the media actually sucked up to Celine compared to how they literally dragged Mariah on asphalt after the Rockefeller. The public on the other hand pretty much gave the same treatment to both after their not-the-best performance.

"Bye Bye" makes me bawl like a kid every time because the lyrics fit perfectly for a loved family member. Other songs would be "Looking In" especially during the part "She smiles through a thousand tears, and harbors adolescent fears. She dreams of all, that she can never be, she wades in insecurity." Others would be "Camouflage" and "Outside". I am sure there are more but these are the surefire crying moments. Wow MC makes me cry a lot haha.

OK maybe a bit exaggerating but the video is still trending on YouTube hitting the one million mark. So she did a cover of Adele's "Hello" and it wasn't her best, and she's getting roasted in the comments. It was surprising, but then kind of wasn't. Mariah and Celine are the last of the vocal trinity, I guess with age it just takes a toll.

Sometimes I pretend someone died and listen to OSD (acapella version) lmfao. I weep. It's so beautiful. Then "I Wish You Well". I picture her singing it at the Grammy's with slide shows of her struggles from Tommy and all the oppression certain people put her through since childhood (Alison, Walter, Morgan, Nick, Eminem etc). Heartbreaking. Then I pretend more people died and listen to Sunflower For Alfred Roy, Twister and Bye Bye. And of course, Close My Eyes and Outside definitely get me crying too. But I cried to Outside the most. I really relate to it and it's probably Mariah's most personal song. Yeah she's just so emotional. I feel all her pain.
