Other fav artists / latest live performance (55,403)

Savage Garden, The Corrs and Matchbox Twenty. I loved to listen to those artists (beside Mariah) when I started to listen to English songs. I loved Destiny's Child and early Beyonce, now I enjoy Alicia Keys, Bruno Mars and Adele. The last videos posted from her Vegas show are amazing. I guess that vacation was really helpful in lifting her spirits. She was just wow.

MC setlist (55,402)
by Willyc95 from United States

I love Mariah, but I hope when she goes on tour again she revamps her setlist. I love all her songs, but I must say Honey, Heartbreaker, Touch My Body, Emotions, etc. have become a little played out. They're still great songs but I'd like to see her perform some of her more lesser known songs. For example: Say somethin' Camouflage Faded Crybaby Alone in love You got me Lead the way Languishing I wish you well Underneath the stars Anytime you need a friend She has so many amazing songs, and I just wish she "refresh" her setlist more often. I feel like she sings the same ones at every appearance. What are your thoughts, and what songs would you like for her to perform in the future?

Re: vocal agility / coloratura (55,401)

Some great examples: The ending of Vanishing live rehearsal where she transitioned from a belt to a whistle note The ending of If It's Over (Grammy performance). The Scat towards the end of Anytime You Need A Friend remix (just amazing). Climax belt of Melt Away (baby iiiiiii). Climax of Hero live MSG (when her belts are even higher than the recorded version). Live 96' performances of VOL in Rotterdam and Tokyo Dome, her melisma in the word "all" in the ending climax. The Rotterdam one completely floored me. Hope this helps.

Mariah's insane vocal agility and coloratura examples (55,399)
by Tyler from USA

What do you guys think are Mariah's absolute greatest vocal performances that best showcase her vocal agility (live and studio)? You know, one's with 1) the hardest and most complex runs, riffs and melisma and vocal climaxes and 2) one's where she's just going all out and straight sangin' and/or taking it to church. I'm planning on making a showcase on YouTube for it.

I listen to a lot, but these are those who are on constant heavy rotation: Male: Stevie Wonder - genius; end of discussion Michael Jackson - no explanation needed Marvin Gaye - passion personified George Michael - most soothing breathy vocals Robin Thicke - best falsetto in the biz Michael Buble - best classical crooner of this generation John Legend - sexy rich, husky tone John Mayer - classic example of image overshadowing talent Jason Mraz - clever and stylistically complex Nathan Sykes - could be much bigger if he is only paid more attention Female: Janet Jackson - most sensual voice out there Madonna - paved the way for every imaginable current female artist Kylie Minogue - underrated albeit uber likeable Sade - most instantly recognizable unique voice Corinne Drewery (Swing Out Sister) - modern Dusty Springfield Amy Winehouse - gone way too soon Brandy - intriguing mixture of warm and cold, hard and soft Lady GaGa - electro or jazz, still a great vocalist JoJo - should be bigger than most current female stars Chrisette Michele - another great talent who's unfortunately still low profile Karen Carpenter - unmatched clear, mature tone Corinne Bailey Rae - honey-dipped voice Kimbra - creates "panoramic" sounds

The first show of the July leg in Vegas, I was fortunate enough to attend. I must say, I was deeply concerned when MC sang this song early into the show. I hesitated posting it, in fear that any hater would pick up on it that would only foster more haters to comment on it. But then I stopped today, and thought, Mariah Carey is truly one of those elite professionals who, even with this one hiccup in the first show in July, moves beyond it to sing her heart out and give what became the beginning of a great come back in this Vegas residency that does nothing but get better with time to a point where she has proven her superb ability in her vocal range and finesse that is almost untouchable by others. getting better. Way to go Mariah, I for one apeopleaud you. Here is the link.

Key of Mariah's songs (55,393)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
See what Mariah has to say about writing her songs on a higher, demanding key and you can see why this may be a trap as well. While she may have a point about songs written in this key being more exciting (meaning, they may have a more joyful feel, always keeping in mind what the mood of the song asks for), I so adore her lower register and what this may bring to songs. Maybe that's why she still feels compelled to not lower the key to some songs ("Fantasy" for instance) and tends to partially lip parts. I wish she got rid of this preconceptions because her voice is a wonder to behold in all its forms.

Thank you to all who responded to my question. It's cool to see the wide selection of music that we all like. I really was happy to see Selena Quintanilla mentioned. I will always have a special place in my heart for her. Her music is timeless and will live on forever. I already mentioned that I like Lana Del Rey. I am into everything from classic country like Dolly Parton, The Judds, George Straight, Garth Brooks and such, to heavy metal and everything in between. I like classic Metallica, Megadeth, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, I am a 90's child for sure. I miss that whole grunge era. I also love the Beastie Boys, 2 Pac, Notorious B.I.G. all the classic "real" hip-hop, Jodeci, Aaliyah, TLC, I love classic rock like ZZ Top, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin. If it's "good stuff" I like it.

MC will always be my #1, that's for sure. But I also like Whitney, Beyoncé, Bon Jovi, Janis Joplin, Tori Kelly, Brian McKnight, Pentatonix, Ariana Grande (she was better during Yours Truly era imo), Queen, The Beatles, Bastille, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Fall Out Boy, Agnez Mo (her music was better before she went international, her Indonesian songs were really good and she got that insane vocal range), and a lot more lol. I used to like Nicki Minaj before she released Pink Friday and went pop. Her mixtapes were dope but she wasted her rapping skills on pop songs. I liked her latest album though (besides a few tracks like Anaconda).

Mariah is hands down my fave. The others in the quartet de awesomeness for me are Brand New, Lady Gaga and The Killers/Brandon Flowers. I also like Lifehouse, Enrique Iglesias, Robbie Williams, Shania Twain, Green Day, Blink 182, Matchbox Twenty, No Doubt (but not Gwen's solo stuff at all strangely enough), Wynonna/The Judds, The Smiths, Queen, Nelly Furtado, Alex Ubago, Caedmon's Call, Dashboard Confessional. So it's odd that Mariah is my absolute fave as I'm mostly a rock, punk and emo kind of boy. I do like some Janet and some Whitney, but neither are my faves. (I do like "No Sleeep".) I can't stand Beyonce or Katy Perry, but if they're fans of Mariah, at least they have some good taste. I still would love a duet between Mariah and Gaga, or Mariah and Brandon Flowers (The Killers are from Vegas), or Mariah and Enrique. I just started listening to Miguel's stuff outside of #Beautiful and am enjoying his new album.

I agree with your post, however I do think the "throwback" thing was blown a little out of proportions. I mean lambs were outraged by the articles with headlines "Katy shades Mariah". But Katy could just have meant that Mariah's music kind of defined the 90s when each year she was on top of the charts and her biggest songs are from the 90s (although that's not my opinion since I do love Mariah's recent music a lot). A lot of Mariah lambs even on this board probably prefer the 90s music because they also keep asking for that. I don't know but that comment never really bothered me or gave me shade vibes. I was also referring to the "Birthday" song when I said she mentioned she has been inspired by Mariah. I didn't know she said the John Mayer duet was also a MC inspiration so thanks for that info. I like knowing about songs which were Mariah inspired. She did call herself a lamb and said "lambiliy for life" and not just a fan so since that comment came straight from her instagram and no magazine interview where things are sometimes twisted, I would like to believe that haha. I love it when big stars from the current scene gush over Mariah. Makes me proud. Anyways thanks for your post. I appreciate the way you delivered your message. Politeness is quite rare on this board.

I was never a Katy fan but I can't lie and deny that she is not a big star of the current music scene. She attracts the teenagers who are the major music consumers. So no I didn't do a sudden turn from my opinion and start loving her. I have always maintained that I detected no shade coming from Katy even when this board was going nuts on calling her out for the song "This is how we do". So I don't know where you saw me hating on her because of that too. I even mentioned the point about her saying she has been inspired by Mariah even before in my posts. My opinion remains the same, I just appreciate her taking the time out of her busy schedule to see Mariah's gig especially since she doesn't talk about her much but others who do didn't bother coming yet. When they do come, I will appreciate them too. And no, I don't care for a Mariah-Katy duet, if I did, I would have mentioned it. My posts are pretty straight forward, no one needs to waste their time reading between the lines for my posts, so if I feel like I want something, I would mention it clearly, no implications here.

I'm watching some videos from the Mariah season of AI and, apart from Burnell Taylor who I've always loved since the beginning, I've rediscovered Amber Holcomb. She has a phenomenal voice, incredible flexibility and ease in stretching out her notes, and a great range. There's a great performance of the both of them singing "Diamonds" and it shows how good they really are. Great singers.

Katy (55,380)

I don't think she was ever really intentionally shady towards M. The only thing was probably her calling M fabulous for a throwback, and it seem more like word vomit or her thinking she was being cute. Her Mariah Careyoke thing always seem like a homage to me, and the drag queen who played M was spot on. It's great to see Katy taking her time out to see M in concert, she seem to always support fellow artists with her concert goings. The person I really want to see go support M is Ariana, it would make headlines and fans would be astonished. We don't really know for sure how M feels about her. And even though lambs give her flak about it, Ariana is a lamb. I mean, can you blame the girl for loving Mariah Carey? I still have yet heard her utter anything but praises for Mariah. Still, she will never dethrone M but I would probably take more offense if they call Miley or Selena the next Mariah. Three of the Fifth Harmony girls went to see M and apparently their fans are upset because they cancelled one of their shows to attend. Let's hope more star power will go support Mariah. Maybe a Julia Roberts or a Diana Ross.

Steve Bartels interview (55,379)
by 123 from USA

His response was interesting regarding Me I am Mariah. "In 2005, we had an amazing win together with The Emancipation Of Mimi. But when she made the decision, as we did together, to move to Epic, I understood it was something she needed to do. Mariah and L.A. have a great relationship, so I think reuniting with Reid was what she was looking for at that point in time. Whenever we see each other, it's very warm. We have a great history together." This is a very interesting response as to why it failed. I remember Mariah's team leaking to the press that she would be moving back to Sony soon after Memoirs came out and had a luke warm response. I think she blamed the label so she decided to go back to Sony and to someone who would put some money machine behind her. Mariah announced prematurely that she was jumping ship, the label felt a certain way about it and decided not to make her a priority anymore. You notice with each release after E=MC2 there was less and less promo from both the label and Mariah. It gives the impression that she spit out these records to get out of the deal. He says everything is warm between him and Mariah yet her Def Jam releases are not out on display with all her Columbia releases at the gift shop in Vegas. I would love an interviewer to ask her about this.

Mimi L. And Katy Perry shade (55,376)
by LC from USA
| |
|
|
Mimi L., I don't think that the shade to which people refer is from her song reference. In fact, I think it's a nice gesture to name drop Mariah in her song. People are referring to this video in which Katy is being interviewed in Australia, and the the interviewer asks her who she thinks is the biggest female star in the world. She then says Beyoncé, but the interviewers bring up that a twitter user said Mariah Carey was the biggest female star in the world, which they doubt, and to which Katy responds "Mariah is fabulous for a throwback. Fabulous." She then goes on to say how she loves Fantasy, Honey, and One Sweet Day and how she sang Mariah's music growing up. However, the "throwback" thing was pretty uncalled for, in my opinion, as we know that the implications of that are that Mariah is only good for the past and is not relevant in the present. And that's what people see as shade. I don't blame them for it. But, she has also said Mariah was an influence of hers, and credited her with inspiring songs on her recent album. Obviously "This is How We Do" references her, but she says "Birthday" was inspired by Mariah's 90s music, and her duet with John Mayer was inspired by Mariah's laugh at the end of "Emotions". So, mixed signals, but I believe that at the end of the day, Katy respects Mariah and is a fan. I mean, she did call herself a part of the "lambily for life".
