"Without You" MSG 1995 / dubbing / Svengali figures (56,785)
by Billy from Greece
| |
|
|
Whoever (you know who) at Columbia records back in 1995 suggested that Mariah should dub the performance of "Without You" is a criminal. If you listen to the undubbed version of the performance you easily understand that this is not only one of Mariah's career best lives ever, but one of the most staggering live vocals you'll ever hear in a lifetime. Unless there were technical issues that made Mariah dub the performance over, I literally can't fathom any reasons why she should do that. Unfortunately, and to the dismay of Mr. Mottola's fans in this board, many of the "bad" routines Mariah may have retained along the years (such as dubbing already excellent performances) I believe were firstly acquired during the Mottola years. Apparently they were nitpicking every minute detail of Mariah to assure success beyond measure, which did happen, but at what cost? Thinking of similar Svengali-diva relationships, Berry Gordy also exercised tremendous control over Diana Ross and although she did branch out, it was also evident that things she learned under his guidance she would not dismiss. Clive Davis was also very hands-on when it came to Whitney's career, maybe having more input that she did at times, yet Whitney was able to "breathe", as a public personality also, something that Mariah apparently never had for the first part of her career. Again, for anyone who's unfamiliar with that live, do yourselves a favor and watch it promptly.

I think "You don't know what to do" should have been a single instead of "Meteorite". It's number one material. I also wished Mariah would haved used the original cover art for the album. It looks more better. Mariah has used the same tired standing up pose for a lot of albums. Her next needs to be fierce.

It might be too late to backtrack now. I have a reputation to uphold you know? Besides, I got an inspired title right after I posted, I'm just figuring out the format. I was always going to do this, just needed Andrew to post something like he did the other day about Petals. It's been established that he has plenty of Yes men and supporters so it's not like a David vs Goliat situation here. This stuff is fun for me. It ain't all deep cuts.

Faded is my absolute favourite from MIAMTEC and on my iTunes it's on #1 of the most listened songs. I'm happy to hear that others love it too.

It might just be like a code word or sign between her and her entourage. She has the same security for years now so they might have secret signs so that Mariah doesn't need to yell out orders in public. I doubt she would smoke knowing what it did to her previously plus didn't she stop mid concert to ask them to stop blowing smoke? So yes my bet is on it being a secret sign code.

Yes, I have enjoyed all of the songs she's done with Warren. There For Me particularly shines to me. Even though I love Mariah's Theme, and After Tonight.

I also heard that Tori Kelly is a huge fan, I didn't get to check out her songs yet. Out of all the people citing Mariah as their favorite, Justin's surprised me the most. I hope more people come out and talk about Mariah's influence. The fact that people like Beyonce and Christina said that VOL and Mariah made them decide they want to be a singer shows how much Mariah has impacted the lives of the industry's best.

I agree. I also love hearing an up and coming artists praise Mariah. I recently read an article about Tori Kelly. She cited Mariah as a major influence so I listened to her song Should've Been Us and I could hear Mariah's influence.

The idea to work with Warren was suggested by Foster, who thought that the two would be able to "hammer out one hell of a ballad" together. They hammered out three: Mariah's Theme, After Tonight, and There For Me. Those three songs are three of my favorites which is why I'm looking forward to hearing their newest collaboration.

Do you guys noticed her injured hand? I don't know if it's because I knew she injured it but it looks very awkward. In pictures it's almost like she doesn't know what to do with it or when she walks she holds it a certain way. Poor Mariah, she had such pretty hands too.

Mariah doesn't need direction. Whatever goals she has, she does it on her own accord. The issue is media has been trying to make her a villain since the turn of a century. Fans have moved on but they are still around. They have not left. Remember this Mariah could have 5,000,000+ fans but only 250,000 buy her music when new material is released. A big part is the lack of promotion. We all saw how well #Beautiful did when it had sufficent airplay. The other part is how society currently views a powerful individual held to a pedestal. They don't like talking about the same person, all the time already. Add over 20 years of inconsistent and different Mariah Carey's to the mix, watch out. I admit Mariah can be divaish and corny but that makes her real. People like her because she doesn't idolize the trends of the music industry. She isn't this poster child for LA Reid like the group TLC. She does her own thing and moves on. I like her becoming a 360 artist with touring, directing, residencies, game of war, Christmas. Music and media. I don't care if she is worth over 500 million dollars, there is nothing fake or divaish about giving fans and media something else to talk about. Music has become her house and she is expanding her brand to a mansion. Repairs and upkeep expected and needed. Difficulty not expected but if it happens, you still own the mansion.

I still get chills everytime I listen to her vocals on this song. I was listening to it tonight, and I'm always struck by how much I love it. Although included on the Never Too Far/Hero single, to me its so reminiscent of the Daydream album and has such a spiritual significance (for me anyway.) I always feel moved after hearing it. Her voice is so beautiful.

I absolutely love Mariah's collaborations with Bone Thugs N Harmony. They just go so well together. "Breakdown" is one of my favorite MC songs of all time and I absolutely adore "Li'l L.O.V.E.". That's why I was excited to hear the new collaboration that was supposedly happening between the two. Does anyone know what happened to that? The song was supposed to be on BTNH's album which was supposed to be their last album ever (?) I think.

This post of dear Andrew from February 15th of this year has 15 likes: "The media has 'turned' against Mariah." The bleatings of the lambs continue. Almost every message on this board about why things aren't going well for Mariah is about *other* people doing things *to* poor, perfect Mariah. This is delusion wrapped in a fantasy designed to profligate the idea that Mariah is a victim (cross fingers for new victim song). The media is going to vilify anyone caught out for faking, especially if it's in such a public way and especially if it's by someone who has acted like a stuck-up diva for ten years in re: attitude and tardiness. Why would they give her a break? She controls her own career, she has cast off anyone who could have provided direction over the past decade and she arrogantly thinks she can do this (which she has done several times) when she is on top as if she belongs there of her own accord, pity everyone who worked to get her there. The problem? It's not Nick, it's not Tommy, it's not Luis, it's not the media, it's not Ariana, it's not Nicki. It's Mariah. Her decisions, her attitude, her unprofessionalism, her arrogance, her amateurism. Stop blaming everyone else. NB I can predict the future, wait, hark, can you hear: "You're so mean. Why do you even come here. You're this pathetic label I'm recycling." It's the bloody truth. The media print what they think the public will buy. If it can buy Mariah being a joke it's because she acts like one. She not a star anymore. Grammy? They understandably didn't want the association." Andrew is a joke and his sycophants are obviously not here to support Mariah. Just look at his own contradictory statements: "Petals (56,727) by Andrew from UK" on September 17th. He doesn't even remember what he posts as long as it's derogatory towards Mariah or any of us LAMBS. He doesn't care to keep any continuity in his own posts. I've rarely seen such blatant and complete lack of integrity. But that's also why I hope Andrew stays for a long long long time because that would amuse me in ways I can't begin to explain. I could very easily, make this a weekly event because unlike Andrew, my memory is elephantine. Once I have a good zingy title there really won't be a reason not to. So don't anybody scare him or his friends off just yet, I need him here to provide fresh material.

MC praises (56,764)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
It's nice to see current hot artists giving shout outs to Mariah or acknowledging her influence. Within this week Katy Perry gave a very public shout out to Mariah (which was well documented) and acknowledged her influence. Then we have Justin Bieber who was asked during a radio interview about who his favourite female artist is and he said Mariah Carey (which I will admit was a bit surprising for me because I did not expect it, but I was pleasantly surprised and happy). He did say even before that growing up, Mariah's music has been a big influence. I see a lot of people take Katy's comment of "sit back and enjoy" (or something like that) as a shade and honestly I don't think it's shady at all, sometimes fans just stir up rumors. Plus I find it funny that people are pissed that Katy talked about Mariah's influence. Like why? If she felt that she needed to give a shout out to Mariah it is completely her prerogative, it doesn't matter if people think some other artist had a bigger influence, Katy isn't speaking for everyone, she is speaking for herself. Same with Justin. I saw a lot of comments about why the hell did he say Mariah and not Beyonce or Ariana and I am like what is this even about? His influence, his favorite, his choice, he can name whoever the heck he wants. I swear if these shout out were to Beyonce or Taylor or anyone apart for Mariah, they wouldn't get such hate. Anyways people can stay pissed, Mariah's impact is undeniable and she is, I think the most copied artist of all time. From the use of melisma, whistle register, cut out jeans to them blinged out microphones, MC has been an influence in everything. Haters gonna hate, but Mariah's gonna get paid.

Billboard article about Katy Perry and Mariah (56,762)
by B from USA
| |
|

I read the article and the comments. The comments are divided. Some commenters say Mariah's impact is undeniable and others say she has made no impact at all. It's 50/50. Most posters say Madonna has made more of an impact and I have to disagree. Mariah's collaboration with ODB is the blue print every Pop song featuring a rapper is based on. Madonna no, Janet influence is felt more than Madonna's. Madonna's impact was felt in the early 2000's through Britney until Britney and Justin started working with R&B and Hip-hop artists.

The singles from MIAMTEC should have been #Beautiful, Dedicated, Make It Look Good, and Meteorite. I love Faded but I think it would have performed similarly to YM(E). MIAMTEC is a musical masterpiece that deserves to be heard.
