I am trying my best to relive those first two years of being in awe with an artist like I was with MC. I still remember the record store where I bought her debut. I remember hearing Emotions on the radio headed to the mall. I am hoping Saint Harison is that artist.

Sorry, I couldn't make it beyond 30 seconds. I prefer male singers that have stronger, lower voices. Male falsetto just doesn't sound good to my ears.

Did you check out his brillant performance of Ego Talkin on Jimmy Kimmel this week? You got to YouTube his performance. Somebody has been truly studying Mariah Carey. I am not making it up either, Andy. He said it in his Apple Music interview discussing his EP Lost A Friend. His vocal technique and phrasing is just like MC. Also, Daley is back on tour in January.

Andrew, I totally agree with [you]. You aren't being negative but just keeping it real. Some of us fans don't believe that Mariah is untouchable and can't be criticized. Anyone who has had the same job for 30 years should be an expert at that job, not still looking like a deer in headlights when on stage, which Mariah does in her live shows a lot. We are just asking her to put more effort into rehearsing for her shows, practicing singing her songs in her current range, put together a great entertaining show, and taking care of her voice for preservation. Isn't that what we all want? We aren't asking her to perform brain surgery or something that she isn't capable of. All of these things are within her control. She just doesn't seem that interested.

I don't know how much money Mariah makes from royalties each year but it's surely got to be around the US$50m mark? I can appreciate the "rug pulled from under you" theory - but it's so unlikely as to be an impossibility.
I cannot now see, at this age, and with the experience she has, why Mariah cannot lower the keys of the songs, sing them, and move around the stage once more. Madonna is ten years older than Mariah, recently got out of hospital, clearly still has an injury to her leg, and still is still delivering a reasonable energised and effective show (although there's a lot of criticism of a different nature that can be levelled at that artist).
I have always said that I think Mariah's weight, and ever expanding breasts, have negatively impacted her movement and her singing - if she cared about her fans she would do something about it. She would lower the keys of her songs, put on a pair of pants, move about the stage again and have actual fun rather than looking like a (rein)deer in headlights. And we would have a lot more fun with it.
For the love of all that is holy, Mariah: go back to the way you were.

Oh please. You sound like one of those anti-sjws that whine about minorities, women and the LGBTQ+ communities being in mainstream media. I doubt Mariah gives a damn about disgruntled pseudo fans ranting about her versus the millions who still love her.

Fantasy (104,003)
by Joachim Agerup Løkkevik from Norway

I think it suits the staus quo of Mariah's career that the song that might stand out as her legacy besides AIWFCIY is Fantasy, and how telling that is for what Mariah has become.
If I try to understand what is going on in Mariah World, is that she is now just a fantasy, and that is what she is selling us with new releases, concerts and "live" performances from her home. She has had a splendid career, nobody can take away her success, especially during the 90's, she will for ever be mentioned when people talk about the best singers in history. Nobody will deny that she had one of the biggest voices the world has gotten to know.
I don't think the general public really knows about the condition of Mariah's voice at the moment, and I don't think they care. The Lambily knows, and we are frustrated. But I think if we still want to enjoy the rest of her career, and I don't think she will retire anytime soon, we have to embrace the idea that she is now a fantasy, a relic of what once was. At her show it is Mariah who is singing, but the voice might be from years ago, and between all the pre-reccorded tracks, she somtimes sings a word or a sentence with her current voice. We just have to believe in her like a child believes in Santa Clause. Mariah is now both real and not real at the same time.
Mariah has become a fantasy you can chose to believe, and even if you don't believe, you can still enjoy the charade, because it induces positive feelings if you just go with the flow.
It's almost Christmas season, and I'm going to enjoy Mariah, her old music, new music, YouTube videos from her Christmas shows, really get into the Christmas and Mariah spirit, and just pretend that it's real, much like Christmas itself.

I literally share the same views. I miss Madison Square Garden 1995 Mariah where she run across the stage and actually moved. I am not a Madonna fan but I have a huge respect for her work and her stage presence. She moves. She puts an afford.
And I hate my brain sometimes because I would still rather pay to see Mariah, standing and singing party live, party not, instead seeing Madonna who is doing her maximum.
But as a Mariah fan since day one back in 1990 - it is what is is. My heart can't go otherwise. You support and pray for the best.

Your comparisons are quite correct: nobody would expect any professional at the top of their game to return to the field in which they dominated after sustaining an injury. I also agree that Mariah should not talk about her voice in public, and she knows it. Maybe in a few years time, if she dains to produce a second book, she may talk about it then, but until that time, she will remain tight lipped. And speaking of which, she is far too reliant on her auto-cue to move her along in the script of the show, to know the next line of the song, and still she can get caught out. I agree also that her desire to perform has greatly deminished, and I think at this point, that is to be expected. But then again, I think she's in a very odd positioning that few of her peers can relate to. She isn't Beyonce, Gaga or Madonna - who rely on the theatrics of the stage. She isn't having the hits that she once had, so she can't rely on that aspect of the business. There isn't much money in the music industry unless you have an AIWFC type of song, or are Taylor Swift, so she can't rely solely on music for her main income (which is why she has all the deals at Christmas), and she's beyond the point of where she could easily pivot and do what Rihanna, Kelly and J. Hud have done, which is to fully diversify and fully go into other opportunites outside of music for their coin. Who else in her peer group can relate to this state of career limbo? I think her continuing to put on shows, does stem from the deep seeded fear she once spoke of, of having the rug pulled from underneath you. She and her family live and extravegant lifestyle and all her income comes solely from music, which I've already said doesn't pay much anymore. So I think that she feels she has to continue on putting on shows to still bring in the money, and why not when it's such an easy goldmine to delve into until people are tired of it. It doesn't matter how much she is worth, that feeling doesn't fully ever subside or go away.

Andrew, your schtick has become tiresome. I'm objective too, and I hold musicians to a high standard, but you're the pits bro. And I know you'll reply to this with a well thought out response. Reading and listening to respond is what you do, it's what defines you. Do you ever get tired of this though? Webmaster you can delete and block me after this if you need to, I'll accept, but after reading this guys messages for over a decade, I have to suggest that he sits on a "duck". If "anal" had any other name, it would be Andrew. I'm sorry if offend here, but this is the most pleasant words I could find to sum up this person.

It's hard to find a comparator for a singer but when a tennis player has an injury they do not sign up for a circuit of Grand Slams and tournaments. When a rugby player has a pulled hamstring, they are taken out of the season. If you can't sing, don't get on stage - and charge money for it?
This sounds mean, maybe it is. And I think if people know what's going to happen and they buy tickets to it, then I'm all for that. But very majorly supportive of people like Adam who chooses not to buy high-price tickets to something very average. The Caution tour was Mariah's first tour in the UK I didn't attend since the Rainbow tour. Because I, likewise, didn't see the point. I'd rather spend the money on a vacation - which is what it costs now.
However, I think you're missing the crux. It isn't that Mariah isn't signing so much, it's that she doesn't move, she doesn't banter much, she doesn't do much of anything. I remember attending the Christmas show at the O2 not far from me: I could see she was reading an autocue of what to say. "I have my own reindeeeeer." That isn't just a loss of confidence, that's a loss of dignity, wouldn't you say?
When someone is asking Mariah to be prepared, it's a grave, grave state of affairs that this needs to be requested. But, I do hope she puts on a good show and doesn't fill YouTube with yet more toss.

Again I absolutely agree with Andrew on the confidence topic. Mariah was confident during those years. One can watch all her great performances online. She was the queen of Pop and RnB and her performances were great and often outstanding. Yes, she was never an "entertainer" but I never needed a circus number from a singer. I loved her magic, sweet aura on stage. Even in 2003 during Charmbracelet tour, she was very confident. A real diva and even entertaining. (Piano performance like a Marilyn Monroe.) She had so much energy and a "having fun" vibe. Superstar power all over. Haha isn't there a rumour with the aliens who kidnapped the real Mariah in 96? But seriously, Mariah can be fantastic on stage. She has it all. The confidence thing is not the problem.

I don't understand from where this idea of Mariah being an "unconfident" performer still permeates? She was unrefined during the debut performances into Emotions perhaps, but 1993 - 2008 oozed confidence - granted: sometimes ebbing, sometimes flowing, but confident she was. It is only since Memoirs did Mariah have a personality transplant. I'm swaying to the idea that she was beamed up to the mothership and replaced with a somewhat imperfect and faulty replica.

I could not disagree more. If Mariah starts talking about her inability to sing - it is all anyone will talk about when referencing her, it will added on to every story written about her where is has no revelance and it will be the overriding, overarching narrative to her life. Mariah does not need to talk about the voice.
What Mariah does need to do is stop being - let's see if this gets through - fat lazy lipsync artist. It's boring. There is nothing stopping Mariah being fit, healthy, engaging, and singing more of her catalogue live than she does. She just doesn't want to. What she wants is for the sheep to blindly keep handing over money for crap she lazily puts out.
Mariah does not lack confidence in herself. Mariah just doesn't give a smurf about your confidence in her. She doesn't care about her fans, despite the lip-service she pays us. She cares about money coming in and people around her telling her she's amazing. And not fat. And not lazy. And not ripping people off.
MC30's are great. MC54 is blah.

Will - your recap and detailed memory are amazing. I just wish that Mariah would be transparent about her vocal issues while she's alive to tell it the right way. It's really disappointing to see many of her peers like Barbra Streisand and Bruce Springsteen still thriving in their older years and being able to tell their story the way it should be told. Mariah continues to be deceitful with the smoke and mirrors and lack of energy and effort when it comes to her preparedness. It's clear it's a money grab for her every holiday season. She is obsessed with her image and not with her vocal training or preparedness. I stress that I wish she would tell her own story because the reality is, when she's gone I bet you there will be hundreds of stories from fellow musicians, background workers in film and music, personal assistants, glam team, etc that will start revealing all the details that Mariah would do to conceal or distort her failing instrument. It's going to be really messy so why not just be forward and tell the story yourself in the way it should be told. This is coming from a place of love with me. I'm not being critical for the sake of being a troll or click bait, it's out of love and respect for my favorite artist in my lifetime. I realize she's human and has flaws like all of us. However, she has a platform that most people can only dream of, so I wish she'd use her privilege in a more useful way while she's still alive with all of us.

It's very true that from 1990 to 2008, she was very confident on stage and quite rightly so. Her voice was in control, she could do anything she wanted with it and it would be there. 2009 onwards, she has suffered from persistent public vocal mishaps:
1 - Michael Jackson's funeral: Her first mishap where her voice cracked and it was talked about in public. However, she had many strong performances after this.
2 - Rockerfeller mic leak: Her first major public scandal on her voice, which saw her pull back from performing on the show after 3-4 fantastic annual performances. I believe this is where the majority of her fears of performing started in earnest, and for her to never have a something like this happen again, relying more on playback for her harder songs later on.
3 - Good Morning America: Now it's difficult to pinpoint what the problem was here, whether it was the sound mix, playback failure or something else, but again, her performance of Beautiful got mixed responses.
4 - MIAM tour: The early stages of the tour were upstaged by her bronchitis and it took her a while to recover. But once she did, she had some great vocal moments again.
5 - NYE: We don't need to rehash this one.
Given that Mariah is someone that has always prided on her image, how she is perceived, and the one thing she prided on was her voice, to be able to have it perform flawlessly that would bring people to their feet in admiration and applause. Now, it is unreliable, inconsistent and does not do what she wishes for it to do. It has reduced itself down, giving her more heavier bass notes rather than the high notes she used to sail into with an ease. She doesn't know what it's going to do next, whether she can rely on it in public. So, taking all that into account, and the vitriol she has had from the public (need I remind you that even during the press conference for #1 to Infinity, she was asked whether there were gonna be many pre-recorded vocals), with the knowledge that she knows she is going to be filmed and have it analysed note for note, why are you surprised she has become less of a confident performer?

MC doesn't have that energy like she had before Memoirs. Her total artist package diminished after E=MC2. After Memoirs, MC became dillushioned with the music industry. Every album after 2008 failed to reach the masses. Every single tanked at on charts. Her vocal ability was being questioned by everyone. The focused and driven MC checked out years ago.

I just hope she learned from last year. The first show is supposed to be an indication of what's to come, it should be just great. Artists tend to do well on the first few dates of their tours. Some of them sometimes get sick along the way, but everybody understands that.

It irritates me when she just wings it because it's so evident. Some people who are natural and confident performers (Celine, Whitney, Fantasia, etc.) could get away with it but performing in front of people is just not where MC is strong. She has even referred to herself as a studio artist in interviews. However, with constant practice and working with seasoned professionals, she could get there. I've never understood why she hasn't called Frank Gatson who has helped Beyoncé become the performer that she is today. For some reason, it comes off that she is only concerned with the glam aspect but doesn't really care about actually performing and giving people an experience at her shows. It feels lazy. I feel like she thinks "I'll just stand here, sing (lip sync) these songs right quick, collect my check and go lay back down and be pampered." If she won't practice and rehearse, she could at least properly warm up her voice. I'm going on a rant. Let me stop lol.
