It's hard to be the bearer of bad news. It's easy for posters on the internet to post whatever because we're anonymous. He actually put his face and name out there and risked the wrath of the lambs. Regardless of everything, everybody still loves Mariah Carey. I'm sure he knew what was coming when he posted it. I think it's brave. He is not exposing anything to the world that we don't already know. He isn't mocking her or trying to humiliate her, TMZ style. He was direct but kind. To me it seems like he's trying to wake her up and help her, because he knows what she can be, and she's so close to being that again. It's hard to be that friend, especially if you like and respect the person. I do wonder why he didn't reach out to her privately, but maybe it wouldn't have had as much of an impact. Thank you Nathan, for trying to wake up our girl. We love you Mariah, and still believe in you. Side note: We don't know what's going on. Shania Twain said on Oprah that she wasn't able to sing after her divorce. If the problem can be addressed, it should be.

Will (49,816) I think she has said Glitter was a mistake. She also said she's grown to accept it with time as it has become a cult classic. I can't find the clip now. Personally, I'm glad Glitter exists.

Mariah's voice vs. everyone elses (49,820)

Mariah's voice is fragile. I do agree that she needs to excerise her voice more often and maybe start seeing a vocal coach. I'm still going to Vegas to see Mariah.

It's one thing when random people off the street have an opinion on Mariah's singing and all the unsolicited, presumptuous advice that go along with that. It's another when someone who claims to be a fan either wants her to undergo surgery and risk losing her voice like Julie Andrews did. Or the ones who spread malicious rumours of addiction to substances as the culprit to any hiccups Mariah has, privately or publicly. Then you have the ones who want her to retire all together. Which category Nate falls into is debatable but like 99% of all the people who comment on Mariah Carey, Nate actually has/had access to her, and until this very moment I assumed they were more friends than just former collaborators. Why would he try and sabotage her Vegas gigs like this? It's actually very slanderous because he's giving the public the impression that he has insider knowledge when he obviously doesn't. Someone with access to Mariah doesn't make thiat kind of underhanded statement that is designed to make fans hesitate on going to Mariah's #1's show. This is not just someone having an opinion, this is a competitor attacking Mariah Carey The Corporation. I don't even understand how anyone can deny that there is an obvious agenda in the industry to dethrone Mariah. Boyz II Men and Mariah have the longest running #1 song in Billboard history and now any possible live duets of One Sweet Day etc. are in jeopardy? Thanks a lot Nate, OAN Mariah, you need to sue for slander and defamation.

They had plenty of hits without Mariah. Everyone is "offended" by the truth when they should be offended by Mariah's disrespect towards her loyal fans by giving one crappy performance after another. Deflecting and misplaced anger isn't going to fix the real problems.

I can't even believe some fans have the urge to disagree with Nathan. "Real" friends tell it how it is. "Real" friends don't play games. "Real" friends will not say what you want to hear, rather tell you what you need to work on. "Real" friends will go there just to help you and wake you up. "Real" friends will keep it real. And that's exactly what he did. I applaud him for that. He's probably the only artist in the industry that really took the time to keep it real for Mariah, just so she gets out of this horrendous habit. Thank you Nathan. As a musician himself and of course, he's closer to Mariah than any of us. This is really amazing to read. Everyone tweet the link to Mariah. She needs to read it. Mariah knows his credibility, after all it might just be the only thing that can help save her.

I 100% agree with what he said. Mariah has to choose to be Mariah Carey again. It's up to her on whether or not she can bring it all back together, and show the world how wrong they are about her. Mariah saved my life with her music, and all I want for her is to rise up again and fight back. But we must also remember that she would have to first admit that something is wrong. The last time that happened, it was during Glitter. And for her to openly say that something is wrong, I'd imagine that is something very difficult for her to do. I don't think she has ever once said "Ok, that was a mistake" except for marrying Tommy. She has (reluctantly) said that Sony did right when they focused the public's attention on her voice, and not her image. Even with Glitter, she didn't say outright it was a mistake to do (I don't think). She is a very strong, independent woman who has a history of disliking of being told what to do, and what not to do regardless of whether it benefits her. She didn't want to put LTT on her first album. Hell, she didn't even want to record new songs for TEOM (ILT and WBT) and look at the result when she did. But she gave in because she was so young at the time and it was her first album. Now though, she's in her 40s, had a successful career with all the awards to boot, I think it will be very difficult for her to hear. This isn't a diva thing, it's a human with insecurities thing.

That was spot on. Until Mariah faces the 100% truth she will continue to give bad performances. Things cannot get better or change until we face the sometimes ugly truth. Hopefully Mariah will see his comments and they will be a catalyst for a phenomenal change. If not, Vegas is going to be a mess.

Nathan Morris (Boyz II Men) comments on bad performance (49,813)
by Martyn from England, UK

Has anybody seen that Nathan Morris has addressed Mariah's poor vocal on his Facebook page? Very brave of him to be so honest. I wonder what Mariah would think if she saw it? He said the following: We as artists should never lose sight or take for granted our gift. The older we get the harder it gets to maintain it, it just doesn't come as easy anymore. But maintaining it can be done. Many artist have done it for years. Usually the more you work-out the stronger your body gets. The more we read the better we get at reading. Exercising and maintaining the quality of your voice is no different. We all have (as artists) had bad performances in our careers that's normal, no one is perfect. And some may have even stuck in a backing vocal or two on those bad vocal days. But when performances like this happen on a consistent basis they are no longer considered mistakes or accidents, they are now habits. We as artists at some point must take the blame when we put ourselves in uncompromising positions such as this. I feel bad for her because I know what she can be, but she has to want to be that again. Being relevant just doesn't do it. I'm sure one of our teachers at some point in our lives told us that if we continue to cheat we would get caught. I know she is coming to Vegas for a residency soon and I pray all goes well for her. Trust me, Vegas is no cake walk.

They mobile uploaded an official Epic Records document that details Mariah Carey's new #1s album, release date, and tracklisting. It includes copyright and official Epic Records/Maroon Entertainment logos. This reminds me of when Beyonces deluxe album details leaked late last summer. Her document showed the remixed tracklisting, new songs, and the official release date. Beyonce later confirmed it as well as her label. If this document is legit for Mariah, I am happy to see her finally go back to Sony and get to hear Hope Street for the first rime.

I think that is a great option for Mariah. She is such a talented songwriter. I know she has done this for a few people before. Someone like Sia comes to mind. She has written some of today's biggest hits, but I can definitely see MC doing the same if she was willing to part with her talent. It could be something she could do behind the scenes if she wanted to slow down in the future. On a side note, it's been very interesting reading everyone's thoughts lately. Nice to see how everyone really all in all want nothing but the best for our Mariah.

I think Mariah is going to be just fine. It's a good thing that people's attention span these days is so ephemeral that they move to the next subject rather quickly. Mariah has gotten her wake-up call, I hope she uses this public outcry to bring about some positive and necessary changes. Sometimes we need to humble ourselves a little to understand all the blessings in our lives. I hope she realizes that she's a megastar because of the support of hers fans, that we shouldn't be taken for granted with subpar performances. Many have jumped ship, but many of us are still here rooting for her, some with tough love, some with constructive criticism, and others with unconditional love, but always here through thick and thin.

"Shame since she is absolutely beautiful in and out and exceptionally talented." That sentence really got to me. It is incredible how one can have so much and still feel so small. Hopefully she can work that out with help from someone, not a husband that can leave at any moment, but a professional that can show her that that woman-child belongs to the past and she has no reason to feel insecure. She has achieved more than ever imaginable. Maybe this divorce is bringing all sorts of feelings of abandonment from her childhood but she has million reasons to feel comfortable with what she made of herself. So many people love her beyond her voice. I've been harsh on her on the business side of things but that doesn't mean I don't understand the emotional side.

Songwriting (49,804)
by Marissa from USA
| |
|

I think Mariah needs to start writing music for other artists. That is the one aspect of her talent that's never wavered. Mariah's songwriting ability is unparalleled. I think she should capitalize on that and stop hoarding all of that greatness for herself. Mariah knows how to write both deep love songs and catchy songs like TMB and ILT, so she could write for big vocalists like Adele or trendy artists of the moment. Can you imagine all of the good publicity she would get if Rihanna or Adele's hottest new song was written by MC? And who in their right mind would turn down a song written by someone of MC's caliber? People who work behind the scenes seem to get much more respect than the ones who are in the forefront. They also aren't under as much scrutiny. I'm not saying MC should stop doing music, I just think that this is a brilliant avenue to explore to ensure that her name is never completely tarnished. If she ever hits a rough patch emotionally, I think it would be better if she just shifted to working behind the scenes rather than retiring altogether.

I love Mariah (49,803)
by Otti from Belgium
| |
|
|
Mariah Carey is more than just a singer. She is this artist, who writes her own songs, likes to sing backing vocals on her own songs, she loves hip hop, she is biracial. Her albums are personal, like a dairy. I remember when Rainbow came out, I was thinking, how every album since Emotions has a one word title. Music Box, Daydream, Butterfly, Rainbow, even Glitter, Charmbracelet. Every title is so girly and at the same time meaningful. Butterfly is like freedom, Rainbow is like about tolerance but also about "after every storm there's a rainbow". Daydream about escaping from daily life. All these reasons makes us fans or lambs. Mariah is not Whitney (rip), Celine. If Mariah stands there singing a little song, she stands there so vulnerable, like she is saying come and safe me. Like a member of Westlife said, when he saw Mariah's clip of Without You.

My take on Mariah, the voice, and alcohol (49,802)
by Michael from USA
| |
|
|
For what its worth: I've been a huge fan since 1990. It's been clear for some time that she mimes parts of songs. Since the Rainbow era (even parts of Butterly) her voice has been thinner when singing live. Alcohol does affect your voice. She has addiction issues in her family. She admits over and over how insecure she is. She has been kind of sloppy and drunk at awards shows (eg with Lee Daniels). She has been accused of having issues with drinking with Eminem, not the most trustworthy person, but I don't think he just made it up out of thin air. IMO, the best recent live vocals were actually from when she was pregnant (I doubt she drank while pregnant). I can't think of any people of her fame starting at her age that haven't had more severe issues than drinking so I believe there is hope. I don't think there is permanent damage, I just think she needs to get some help. Maybe not for alcoholism but atleast for her insecurity and self esteem. Shame since she is absolutely beautiful in and out and exceptionally talented. I truly believe she will rise to the top once again, but not until she does some real work on herself.

Jazz and Blues thoughts (49,799)
by Bill from the UK

So I've watched some clips other than Fantasy. ABMB was great. Her voice sounded rich and her ad libs were beautiful. The only lipped part seems to be the climax after "only a matter of time" which she always lips. The rest seemed great to my ears. I do think the reaction to Fantasy has been a bit extreme, and we're not giving Mariah the credit she deserves. Mariah has been performing for 25 years. She has performed Fantasy many times, and she wrote the song. I sincerely doubt that she would be unable to convincingly lip sync a song that a) is one of her biggest hits and one she has sung countless times and b) has lipped many times in the past successfully. There was (caps) obviously (end caps) some fault which meant she couldn't hear the music or the backing track. This is probably why she was singing some parts live over the backing track. The same goes for her messing up the ABMB lip (she missed her cue) and the end to WBT. All lipped sections, it seems as thought she couldn't hear. I'm not making excuses because I am always disappointed when she lip syncs, but honestly, people are making out like she's some washed up alcoholic has been, staggering around the stage unable to even remember her own songs, and that's just not the case. Mariah, as the opening of Heavenly says, you don't have to speak up for yourself. Be still, and let God fight your battles. Hey to Shelly.
