Obsessed in the UK (104,594) by Stacey from USA
Don't need to ask myself, lol. I am glad SS wasn't the lead single. That's what my last post was trying to say. While I didn't connect with ILT at first, hindsight is 20/20. MC was wise to get everyone excited with a bouncy song than blow us away with what made her so successful to begin with.

Numbers (104,593) by Andrew from the UK
Mariah has now spent a total of 92 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, and there have been a total of 1753 weeks since "Vision of Love" was released on May 15 1990. In total, Mariah has spent 5.25% of her professional recording career at No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. On average, for every 19 days that has passed since May 15 1990, Mariah Carey was at No.1 for 1 of them. That's genuinely incredible.

The first-half of The Emancipation of Mimi is class. The second-half? Meh.

All I want for Christmas is truth (104,591) by Andrew from the UK
YouTube: "It's the first Christmas song that I wrote."

Wikipedia: "By early August, Carey already had two original songs written alongside Afanasieff including the 'sad and ballad-y' 'Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)' and the 'Gospel-tinged and religious' 'Jesus Born on This Day'. The third and final original song the pair planned to write was to be centered and inspired and in the vein of a 'Phil Spector, old rock 'n roll, sixties-sounding Christmas song'."

So, which is it?

It's not the first time I have heard Mariah claim AIWFCIY to be the first Christmas song she ever wrote - but I have read/heard on several occasions over the years that the other originals came first. Alas, there are seemingly a lot of dubious truths surrounding this song on Mariah's part.

On the balance of probabilities, I cannot help but find Mariah's claims that she wrote this song on a Casio keyboard and took it to Walter oven-ready, less likely than Walter's rather more detailed and nuanced explanation that the two of them developed it together, passing it back and forth.

Stacey, just ask yourself if Say Somethin' could have paved the way for WBT in the same way? ILT was the party record that TEOM needed as the lead single. It said that Mariah Carey was back. A January release date and a delayed video caused it to stall at number 16.

I had the same issue with ILT. The whole concept of the song didn't make sense to me. That is until WBT was released. Here we go now. Let's go now. Silence. Then WBT started and the rest is history.

I adore [It's like that]. I think it should go at number one and I think it is a typical Mariah upbeat song as a first single of an album, like Honey for Butterfly, like Heartbreaker for Rainbow.

I agree. The voice came out effortlessly and clean. I hope she delivers some good vocals on her next album.

That could be one reason. Plus "Obsessed" is so untypical for a Mariah single. I remember when "It's like that" came out, a lot of friends told me it didn't sound like a Mariah song. With "We belong together" they were fine.

Alcohol (104,582) by TheWind from England
Mariah's vocals are much improved in my opinion. Whilst she seems a little sad, she does seem very together in interviews, for want of a better word. I haven't seen and "splashes" or alcohol in sight recently. I wonder if she's given up. Her voice hasn't sounded this fluid or agile in a long time. Not saying she's at her 90s peak, but she is definitely much improved. Whatever she is doing, I hope she keeps it up. Well done, Mariah.

My All (Kanye's arrangement) (104,581) by Jamie from UK
The bit where she sings in the interview setting, she sounds great like she used to in interviews and also very composed and not saying "dahling" every two seconds. I approve.

Not too sure as I loved how she looked in that video. I'm guessing the Eminem rumours didn't help as he's quite popular in the UK. That's all I can think of really.

I think Mariah caving to the auto tune trend and also a vocalist singing "sexing me" was a bit hard for the radio audience to digest. The Jump Smokers remix is the best version, the OG isn't a fast song or a slow song, it's a challenge to know where it fits. However, The music video and response to Eminem's harassment is legendary.

Article: Mariah Carey stops by Library of Congress (104,578) by Stacey from USA
No teacher of mine in the 1990s wore that. I'm a teacher now and I don't wear that, lol. I should clarify my post. MC looked beautiful and covered up. Just proves she can wear age appropriate clothing and still look stunning.

I think usage of auto tune throw people away from loving it to the fullest. Plus the remix with Gucci Mane was just the same song with extra male verse.

My All (Kanye's arrangement) (104,576) by Dennis from Miami, FL
I just watched. There is a snippet of new version of My All. I have listened again to Kanye's version - the lyrics and arrangements are the same. A few years ago Mariah said that she liked Kanye's version of My All and would like to perform it. Then for few years there was nothing. Now it is part of her Christmas show. I like his version, but I like the original more. The new version is called "Christmas Gospel Version".

Lol I didn't think of it that way. But when I was in the first grade in 91 my teacher had the mentioned ensemble. She was the principal and even as a kid I always noticed her elegant outfit. Anyway the ensemble really suits Mariah. MC the principal.

I can't fully appreciate how and why Obsessed tanked so badly here. The song was liked far and wide, the video was constantly appearing on television for obvious reasons, and whenever I heard or hear it, people sing along with the chorus for they know it and like it. It's baffling. Any ideas?

I'm not surprised. RATCT is at no. 25 on Canadian iTunes atm. Ahead of Brenda is MC, Sia (Snowman) and Kelly Clarkson (Underneath the Tree) Christmas tunes.
