Legal wars and MCIIY (40,076)
by Blake from USA

Ok does anyone know, I mean truly know, what is going on with Mariah and IDJ? I am wondering if this is kinda what happened with Sony in 2001, when her contract was up. She fulfilled it with a greatest hits instead of a studio album. I have heard someone on this board say that TAOLG fullfils her contract but they too could release a hits collection if Perez Hilton is right about the Kayne West rumor. This all makes sense with delaying (besides her injury) and how Mariah is singing "Looking In" as a statement. Summer 2012 was supposed to be her year and again 2013, and now 2014 is coming. There is much more going on here than we all know. I also find it odd that she is not performing any Christmas music from her second Christmas album which I know only went gold in the USA and everybody loves the first one more, but still is odd to me. Seems how IDJ makes money off that and not the first release. I just wanted to add that I love MCIIY the same as the first but I am not fond of "Here comes Santa Claus" - I think it's too ghetto sounding for her.

Rockerfeller (40,075)

I'm enjoying both of those performances for what they were; great. I don't care about the copy and pasting, if indeed it happened at all, or any dubbing. I'm sure all the celebrities performing did the same thing. It's standard these days. I was just happy to hear some gorgeous runs and Mariah's beautiful tone, which sounded clearer and thicker than she has done in recent years. Two of her best performances since she did promo for MCIIY. I loved the little high notes added in here and there. Sure, her belting wasn't there, but I think she'll never recover that part of her voice. I loved it for what it was though. I love Mariah at Christmas.

Higher notes (40,074)
by David from Australia
| |
|
|
I think the struggle in reaching high notes is the only real criticism I can find in regards to her current vocal abilities. Otherwise, her whistles, low notes and runs are almost flawless. I still don't think her current voice is better than the Rainbow era though. Also, on a random note, I'm curious whether anyone apart from me prefers her Charmbracelet vocals over post Emancipation era vocals? I especially loved the belting and whistles in that era, for example Subtle Invitation and Bringin' On The Heartbreak.

Whistle note at the end of AIWFCIY performance (40,073)
by Eternal from Italy
| |
|
|
Do you all hear that whistle note at the end of the AIWFCIY Rockefeller performance (official clip), when she sings the last line of "Christmas"? I watched several fan tapings, but this whistle note was absent. Did she do multiple takes of the same song and dubbed them together? Anyway I thought this and JTTW were very solid performances. She sounded a little less nasal compared to her summer showings, and her runs were better. I've been re-watching some of her past performances (especially the 2001 BET Christmas special) and her voice has gotten that much thinner since then. Still enchanting though.

She did an amazing job. She struggles with higher full voice notes, but this is seriously proving that she still has a voice. And have you all noticed between this performance and the Jimmy Fallon impromptu concerts that her runs are getting amazing. She is much better now live than the 1999-2000 Rainbow era.

I agree with people who are saying age is an issue. But mostly I think that is a good look on Mariah, in the sense that the popular young artists are mostly being forced into genres and showing their bodies with very little understanding of the power they power they truly have. Mariah has so much more in her life now that she can be herself and speak her mind, she was so abused and mistreated by her earlier record companies and I believe that she does have much more control and would choose that over number one hits any day. As far as her live singing, she was just such a musical freak out the gate that there is no way she can't hit that live anymore, there are either going to be changes to the music or she will lip sync I much prefer her changing chords and just gives us the voice she has which is still so compelling and lovely.

Copy and paste performance? (40,070)
by Lee from UK
| |
|
|
Correct me if I am wrong, but it appears Mariah is up to her "do it three times and copy and paste it together" trick. Here is a fan recording of Joy to the World and here is the televised version. Notice the way she is holding the mike at the end in the televised version but in the fan version the mic is clearly in its stand whilst Mariah waves both of her arms around.

Stuccato (40,069)

I love Mariah's Joy To The World, but I'm a little underwhelmed with the Rockerfeller performance. I do not enjoy it when Mariah uses stuccato instead nice smooth vocal runs. It leaves me feeling uncomfortable.

The problem (40,068)
by Danny Braden from Uk
| |
|
|
The problem I think in my mind is the fact that Mariah doesn't bring the money in anymore, hence small gigs, limited promotion and lack of a solid release for an album. It's almost gone back to the beginning of her career, but without a gimmick or element of surprise. And maybe it doesn't matter, we still love her and she still is relevant and present. But I think that's what we are seeing is lack of financial support and creative direction from the label and management and Mariah herself, it seems that her balance of family and work may sometimes come into conflict if she wants a hit album with limited promotion. Mariah will always make money and music, but I won't be surprised if she ventures into production, movies and song writing for others in the future. She can still make hits, just not sure the public buy into her image anymore.

Joy To The World was awesome (40,067)

Mariah has become such a personal part of my holiday experience over the years, and this year is no exception. Will, I so agree about "One Child". It's a stunning piece. She brought me to tears during the Christmas in Washington performance of it. There was just something so beautiful about that moment and singing the song while carrying her first babies.

She sounded amazing at Rockefeller Center. Both performances were great, but Joy To The World was phenomenal. There were even times where her vocals sounded like the original recording in that song. She looked fabulous as always.

Last year - "Christmas Time Is In The Air Again" (2012) (40,064)

How gorgeous is Mariah in this and how awesome the interpretation? If they ever do a retrospective box set of Mariah with rarities a la Barbra's "Just For The Record", they should definitely include this performance. It is so good ol' Hollywood glam classic to be enjoyed by future generations.

I actually liked the Bieber duet. I think it was cute and gives the song a whole new look. The original is definitely a classic, but I like the duet too. It's cute and festive. The climax was fun with both of them ad libbing.

Sneak preview or RFC looked amazing (40,061)
by Carol from Spain

The Rockefeller performance sounds amazing and Mariah looks stunning. I love how she's embracing the long sleeved gloves, it looks classy on her. And the red dress with the white mini coat? How stunning is it? She is also so gogeous, isn't she? I love how the two little raw videos sound, now let's hope some low life sound editor doesn't ruin the whole thing cause that happened before, as we all know. I can't wait to watch it all now.

IDJ situation (40,060)
by Monark from Australia
| |
|
|
I think it is clear there is some sort of situation at IDJ. Looking In being performed after she broke her arm, I think was very deliberate and her tearing up at "She dreams of all that she can never be" was significant for me. It just felt that there was something that wasn't typical Mariah Carey in the works and the support wasn't there nurturing her creativity. It's catch 22, you need to spend money to make money. I don't necessarily agree with IDJ's position, if it's their position not to offer marketing support, but if we look at the albums made so far, Charmbracelet, Mimi, E=MC2 and Memoirs, I think it's really unfortunate that only one went gangbusters. But it's true. Making a Mariah Carey album, before the promotion and marketing and everything else would be a pretty pricey proposition. She is after all the best, and I imagine would use the best that money could buy. I think that building on the Christmas appeal is probably a very smart move if there is not going to be that financial input to market the album. One thing that has struck me as odd is that a few people have said that she hasn't really promoted things. Fair call with Triumphant and TAOLG, but Beautiful had quite a few appearances. I hope this album is a success, for some reason the general population doesn't quite connect with her at this point. It's like the marketing machine is needed to remind people that they do. I find that quite sad, she's got so much to offer. That's my two cents anyway.

My rusty 2ยข for this month (40,058)
by Tony from US
| |

My logic tells me that MC is gonna enjoy her annual Christmas reign, and build on her holiday media presence (3 performances this week, AIWFCIY in every store and radio station, etc.) with new single/album details while she's still on people's minds and playlists. MC and JD are both veterans in the music game with legacies securely intact. I highly doubt JD would do anything to hurt her career, or that MC would sabotage herself, much less let someone else do it. Let's relax folks, and have a Merry Christmas.

Here's the thing, if there was no debate there's a problem. Debates or discussions are proof that MC's fans are passionate about her music which is her profession. Mariah has written some of the best songs of all time and she has nothing left to proof. I still believe in her talent and talent always rises to the top.

I love One Child! Probably my favorite song off MCIIY. Such a great song with wonderful lyrics, arrangement, etc. As a Christian, I love how MC has fun songs on her albums like Oh Santa or AIWFCIY, but then she'll include religious songs like One Child or JTTW to remind us why we celebrate Christmas.

TAOLG (40,053)
by Manny from U.S.
| |
|
|
As much as we want TAOLG and all her singles to become hits, there are things that out of Mariah's control. The music business is sadly primarily about the cash, not the music. Record companies are looking to be lucrative. They do what is convenient for them. I feel IDJ is not supporting Mariah as before. That means no promotion. This is reminiscent of what she went through with Sony and Virgin. I'm pretty sure Mariah will speak of this when she has no ties with IDJ.

TAOLG (40,052)
by Mimi L. from Empower Your Highlighter
| |
|
|
We should all just leave it now. It's obvious that nothing more will come out of it, so enjoy the song, and wait for next year. It's already December, so it's not to far away. I think they may have something planned for February, single or album, can't be sure. So yes let's just wait for it, and in the mean time enjoy watching Mariah perform this season. Arguing whether the single would have been a hit or not is fruitless, it's too late for that. And I am sure Mariah, JD and her team know better than us because they are the ones who are actually in the music business, not us.
