Lip sync (37,934)
by Anonymous from

She clearly lip synced at the Beautiful song section. The rest was live. Lol. I don't understand why she did that. She probably has not had time to do another arrangement for that song. No need to though when the song is so new though and never heard by many.

#Beautiful spoof (37,933)
by nikki from usa
| |

|
It's only 20 seconds long and you have to start it at 39 seconds in, but there's a spoof of Beautiful that's really short and silly. I thought it was funny and so true. Lol. The undubbed versions are on YouTube of her live performances and it's interesting that Fox refused to comment on any possible technical difficulties from their end. Very interesting. I still say they're ticked about that 18 million. Her music video is approaching 4 million views, not bad for a week.

Most simple solution (37,932)
by Orkun from The Netherlands

How about just simply putting the raw recordings including videos, all 3 of them , on the Internet and stop the speculations? They have recorded it all. What's stopping them? They just simply should. By the way, MC did stand up for JLo. Watch closely. PS: No one on this page is a hater. No one. Just imagine we are all butterflies on a rainbow with emotions, daydreaming as our music box plays like a charm bracelet mimi'ing our ways through life unplugged, realizing we are perfect angels while being imperfect. (I would have continued my sentence but the new album title is yet to be announced.) I enjoy reading all of the messages. And our editor plays very fair. Not an easy thing to do.

J.Lo (37,931)
by Jenny from South Africa

The more annoying thing about it Lee, is that MC did actually stand up for her. That's what really bugs me here. She gave J.Lo a standing ovation and still gets accused of being rude and dissing her. She can't win. People will always make things up to attack her more. For some reason media and non-fans seem to really hate her as opposed to just not liking her music. I don't understand why people react so badly to her. Sigh. Even with how she shows a lot of skin in her videos. J.Lo, Beyonce Rihanna, the list is endless, but those people don't get attacked for their outfits the same way Mariah does. And those people all dance really sexy whereas with Mariah it's really mainly her dressing that is sexy. But anyway, I've given up trying to understand all the unfair media she gets.

You said it perfectly. Why even bother with people who will never like MC regardless. Other people's perceptions or misconceptions will never affect my feelings or opinions of Mariah. Though I do always want her to be at her best and exceed what's expected of her, my love for her will always remain unconditional and I will be eternally grateful for her efforts and everything she has already done in her career. I understand wanting her to have that respect and recognition, but at the end of the day no one can't really laugh at/or not respect someone that has already proven themselves in every way already. So I wouldn't care what people thought of my love for her. I would confidently educate them on why she's already lengendary.

Another thing irks me about this fiasco. Why is Mimi is getting grief due to appearing to not give J-Lo a standing ovation? These people should know that it is J-Lo, not Aretha or Patti LaBelle. I will never understand the hero-worship that J-Lo has gotten over the years despite underwhelming music and crappy movies. Yet if Mimi puts out a bad song or bad movie, she is exiled from showbiz.

Shade on each other (37,928)
by Gerome from Canada

AI did not put Mariah's performance before the grand reveal and Mariah did not give AI stage the honor of doing a live performance. It is really funny. The upside on this AI era is that Mariah was exposed to the general public on a bi-weekly basis, giving her enough push for the release of her #Beautiful single and LP. She will never join AI again I guess. Ever.

She did not lip sync it (37,927)
by Gerome from Canada
| |

It is hard to believe guys, but after very close listen and view, Mariah really did not lip sync at all. The performance may be edited a bit to fit the time limit, but she totally sang every word live. At first I thought that she did it at the beginning of Hero, but I was wrong. Everything was sung live. I love her more for this stellar performance. She might be laughing at the lip sync rumors right now. Hail the true queen of all divas.

Hard to believe (37,926)

A singer of her level had to cut and past together different live performances to create the perfect performance? On a singer competition show where she was herself a judge? I must be dreaming please, why do things always have to be so complicated with her?

AI performance (37,925)

I have to agree that the undubbed audio was way better. I wish they would have just used that. Nope it was not perfect 90's Mariah, but she still sounded good. All in all though, the performance was not horrible, but the editing was. Someone made a comment about how they have to defend Mariah all the time. You don't have to defend her. Stop feeling like you have to. The one thing that I have learned from being a fan for so long is that if they didn't like her in the 90's when she was at her 100% best, they aren't going to like her now. They were going to find something wrong regardless. So why bother defending her and getting yourself upset?

Sometimes I miss the days before the internet lol (37,924)
by Deedre aka MiTodoChop @HBF from Canada

I think she sounded strong, gorgeous and looked stunning in that gown. It's clear the editing was very questionable, but I truly understand why MC is such a perfectionist with the way people are so ready to pounce after every performance. Sometimes I just wish we could go back to the days where she performed and everyone was just happy to see her. Lol. Don't get me wrong, here, I fully support differing opinions, that's the reality of the internet these days and I wouldn't change or deny anyone's right to feel the way they do. More than anything, I'm just embarrassed her publicist had to make a statement she wasn't lipping. For me, that was always clear listening to it that it was done live. It wasn't until I saw the article did I realize the level to which people must have been talking about it. I really don't think it was the hairy deal some are making it out to be.

I thought the performance was gorgeous. I can't for the life of me appreciate "opinions" on this board when they seem like trash. Seriously. I have been embarassed myself of some of her previous live performances, but these past few years I feel and hear that she still has the voice I fell in love with. Her voice is shot? What the hell? Am I even on a fan board anymore? Am I even living in reality? Mariah, you're on fire, and they can't take that away.

AI performance (37,922)
by Marise from Russia
| |

To me it sounds live. I really don't think she was lip-sync, except maybe some parts in Hero. That performance was not breathtaking, but amazing nevertheless. And I do enjoy it. The problem is Mariah's voice is not so powerful now as it was in 90's, so she has to be static on the stage to hit high notes instead of moving.

She still has her voice. She's just never been comfortable performing. Her nerves get the best of her and her voice cracks. She's never been known as a live performer, she's in her element in the studio.

MC did great (37,920)
by jaker20 from US
| |
|
|
I thought she did a great job guys. Quit being so hard on MC making her work her behind for you and serve you whistles all the time. How sad are you? She did great. I have to say though that they butchered the editing, for example, she did a very good, in fact, fantastic job with My All, but they showed it with the camera overhead. WTH. All of them were live, except for Hero. But even that part was part was badly edited. If you listen to the undubbed, her vocals on that part were not perfect, but again, they butchered the editing. All in all, this is one of her best vocals guys. I've been a fan for so long, I know when's she's dubbed, lipping, or singing with a track. I'm no fool. Sorry to say, but some of you are for being swayed by negative media and haters (mostly from that other girl's camp I'd rather not name).

Daily Mail (37,919)

You know something is wrong when the Daily Mail and its readers support Mariah (the majority of them anyway) and lambs don't. I'm still not getting why some people thought that the performance was bad? As I said before: the vocals were on point and the editing wasn't. It is as simple as that.

Undubbed (37,918)
by Lee from UK
| |
|
|
I've just listened to the undubbed fan recording of the American Idol Medley. Sure it wasn't perfect, but it wasn't awful either. Why on earth she chose to edit together a mash up of different recordings to create this fake product is beyond me. She should have just chose the best out of the 3 and put that one out for all to hear. I don't think anybody was fooled by the production trickery.

So... (37,917)
by Jamie from UK
| |

Mariah set the bar so incredibly high for herself in the 90s that even now that her voice is shot she feels obliged to live up to that expectation to avoid severe criticism. She can't afford to mess up and especially not on American Idol. I don't believe the Idol performance was lipped, but say it was, people would be more willing to forgive that than an awful performance. Personally I think she did a great job. In fact I think she should start doing medleys in her concerts to spice it up a little.

Solution (37,916)
by Orkun from The Netherlands
| |
|
|
Even the fans who did like the Idol taping are referring to the so called live and raw recording and calling it better, which I agree. Still, parts were playback (Hero). The problem: Being diva-ish and working the image is totally fine with me. But not if this is the only thing she's doing on stage. The solution: Read between the lines dear Mariah. No matter what we all think of the taping, we all refer to the raw audio. The part where she salutes Randy on stage is the raw Mariah. So intimate and gracefull. That's why Jimmy Fellon performance was a success too. Deserved succes. Precious movie? Same succes for the same reason. She said during her Billboard Artist Of The Decade Award: "Forget the image, forget the ensamble, forget the big hair, forget the rumors." Well, I'm trying.

Disgusted (37,915)

That's how I feel with a lot of comments here. In my opinion Mariah sang amazing. And I'm not a fairweather friend, I'm a huge fan of over 12 years and I've seen her many incredible live performances. I've actually seen her live in concert. It was amazing. And for me, the Idol show was brilliant. If you have watched these performances as much as me, you can tell when she lipped. I'm confident she didn't. Can I please congratulate her on a bloody brilliant show and her new song. Call this fan blind if you want, but that was beautiful.

Vocal changes (37,913)
by Chase from USA
| |
|
|
In the first years of Mariah's career, she discussed spacing live performances apart to keep her voice strong and healthy, although many legendary vocalists perform night after night and are no worse for the wear. I think her singing style, which requires incredible stress and strain, began to damage her vocal cords early on. That damage became particularly apparent during the Butterfly era and significantly more so in the following decade. Perhaps the lifestyle changes that followed her separation from Tommy added to this. She was liberated from a heavily-moderated and otherwise unhealthy lifestyle that probably helped to preserve her voice. I am only speculating. I'm sure Mariah knows the truth and is very much aware of these vocal changes, which have likely troubled her greatly. I am grateful that she is still doing her thing at 43, after spending over half of her life performing on stage and recording in the studio.

Medley served its purpose (37,912)
by Chase from USA
| |

|
As others have mentioned, the live medley bumped #Beautiful back to the iTunes top 10, keeping the song alive longer, after it had begun to slip down the iTunes chart. As we (myself included) speculate about lip syncing, vocal issues, etc., let's keep in mind that this performance served its purpose and was a success.

Production (37,911)
by nikki from usa
| |

How quickly they all forget. It's amazing when someone else makes the bed, everyone blames you for the sheets. When Mariah did Triumphant live and the medly, she had so many problems with her ear peice and couldn't hear herself. The sound glitches kept cutting in and out when she sang live. She got so much flack for it too. It makes since this time around for: reason 1. To avoid another "sound glitch" during a live show, instead have 3 live versions to ensure a great deal of awesome material that will be cut and pasted together later for quality. Not suspecting AI would be so shoddy at production. (I have to say in this day and age, if someone were to lip, they would've taken care of the sound problems in production. There's no way it would be that obvious and that bad. The fact that it was makes me think AI is ticked about that 18m.) 2. Mariah is a diva and AI has a time slot. For those who were there, she did the songs 3 times, talked to the fans in between, and sang other songs at random "for the nastalgia". You're not going to get a medly from Mariah Carey that's under an hour. So, they're going to want to pick and choose "moments" and be able to cut for time if necessary. That's production.

Oh and BTW (37,909)

There is an undubbed audio of her performance on Idol on YouTube and it sounds just as good of not better than the dubbed version. She just sung a with a backing track on #Beautiful to harmonize with the whistles at the end. So in reality her voice is improving a great deal.
