What's an old fan vs. new fan

Well said. Totally agree with you.

Lashonda (36,118) by RadChad from United States
I couldn't agree more. It's almost like it isn't a fan site anymore, but more of a bash site. It's a lil disheartening to come here and see Mariah getting dragged by her own fans, while the public does the same. I actually like the new song now as well, after just listening and giving it a fair unbiased chance. I understand that we all aren't going like every Mariah song the same, but I do believe as fans we shouldn't be so quick to count her out/give up on her, but go that extra mile to give where she is musically a fair chance. If we love and respect her as an artist and she wants to make a song about being triumphant, then why can't we put our bias opinions about what we want her to do musically aside and try to understand why she felt the need to release this song. As long as the music is honest, then people or self proclaimed fans shouldn't unapologetically drag her through the mud and prophecy doom on her career.

Charts (36,117) by Jenny from South Africa
Hey guys. RibbonB, I always agree with your opinions. I love how positive you are. You always make me feel proud to be a Mariah fan and you make me smile. Anyway, I just wanted to point out that even though whenever MC hits number 1 I am insanely happy for her, I really don't think chart positions are the be-all and end-all at this point in her career. She's already had more number 1's that any other solo artist and she's broken plenty of records in her heyday. I really don't think she has anything to prove any more and I think she feels like that too. I'm glad she is making music that she loves and is proud of. She used to always bend over backwards trying to please everyone, which led to her exhaustion in 2001 and I'm glad she's putting herself first now. As a fellow people-pleaser, I have to say it's stressful and tiring. Not everyone is going to love all her songs. Everyone has unique tastes. And radio does prefer to play the younger artists like Rihanna and Katy Perry. And there are still fans out there who love her new music. Just check her twitter mentions.

Get em (36,116) by lashonda collins from usa
It's really discouraging to see so many people, even lambs, hate on the new single. What in the ham sandwhich is wrong with people? Give Mimi a break. The song is hot tamale, I've been waiting a long time now to hear a song from her about making things happen. This song was released when I needed Mariah to inspire me to get off the ropes. And she did. Is the song that terrible? Come on.

Triumphant (Get 'Em) airplay update (36,115) by Rod from Philippines
Triumphant (Get 'Em)'s airplay just crossed the 5 million mark today on MediaBase. It's currently at 5.216 million. It gained a 0.251 million impressions from yesterday's airplay. A big chunk (about 65%) of the total is from Urban and the rest is Rhythmic (about 34%) and others (1%). I hope airplay continues to increase and that the dance remixes be sent and added to Pop.

Re: Flaws/perception (36,114) by Rod from Philippines
You hit the nail right on the head, RibbonB, with your half empty glass analogy. Most fans (self-proclaimed die hards or not) live inside this Mariah #1 bubble. That if a Mariah song, once it's released, doesn't go to number #1 instantly or if it struggles to debut on or even move its way up the charts given the circumstances at hand or the factors that come into play (which most, if not all, self-proclaimed die hard fans STILL, up to this day, have absolutely no idea of), they are the first ones to call it a flop and to ask for the next single to be released. What I find more disturbing though is that their liking for a Mariah song depends on its chart position or the absence of which. Another thing about these so called "die hard Mariah fans" that never fails to wrinkle my brow is that eventhough they have been Mariah fans for so long, have listened to her CDs, have watched her music videos, performances and interviews and have heard/seen her sing/perform live countless of times (and maybe have interacted with Mariah in person), they still can't seem to get into Mariah's head (and heart) after all these years. They are oblivious when Mariah is being serious or just having fun or even making fun of herself by poking fun at her flaws or insecurities. I guess it just really takes a "crazy" person to know one.

Stacey (36,113) by TJ from Norway
I couldn't agree more. It's like that in her live performances as well. I was watching the good old "Here is Mariah Carey" when she sang Without You. She even carried her own microphone stand on stage. She didn't care if she made facial expressions while singing at that point of her career. She walked (stairs ), sang and was more natural on the stage. Today she is always on these high heals and need help to get around. I do love her music, and I always defend her in discussions with friends, but sometimes it's hard to defend her choice to look like a Barbie doll.

Mariah's too humble (36,112) by darnell from United States
I think Mariah's problem is she's too humble. For some reason she doesn't realize who she is. I don't think she realizes that she's on MJ's level as far as icon status and people expect certain things from her. Or maybe she doesn't care. I don't hate Triumphant but it definitely shouldn't have been a lead single. It's more than likely a buzz single. I just think Mariah should take herself and her career more seriously.

Flaws/perception (36,111) by RibbonB from USA
Lol the video flaws were intentional and tongue in cheek. That's how I read it and why I find the video so intriguing. All of Mariah's incarnations in the video are exaggerated and over posed and I love the off beat stomp at the end and the weak jab makes me laugh. Mariah is a good acctress, so when she exaggerates her diva pose walking into the ring I just laugh and cheer. The video is fun and happily number three most viewed on Vevo for the past couple days. Geezy, you can see this as a disaster if you will, but so many fans do not. It's always sad when some see the glass half empty and others see it half full, but worse when some want to just empty the glass and start over. It's Mariahs proverbial glass and she's staying on her toes.

I think Perez has been pretty nice to MC lately and Stacey, you are so right, Triumphant just feels so flat and uninspired.

Looking forward (36,109) by Geezy from USA by way of NYC
I feel like we can officially call Triumphant a major disappointment and disaster from looks of the charts and the majority of the reviews. Now looking forward, I can hope that Mimi and her team are putting the proper game plan in place. Also in order for this new era to be a success, Mariah must deliver better quality songs, videos, and performances. She must realize that she is cut from a different cloth compared to today's female pop stars and even though it's not fair, she has set a bar so high that when an album or song doesn't match or out perform the previous effort, it will always be deemed a flop or failure. That's just how things go in the music world and the world of Mariah Carey.

Interesting thought, Triumphant video (36,108) by Stacey from USA
I got this from another die-hard MC fan on another fan site. I think it's a deep interpretation of how a lot of us feel about the video: "Oh dear, she's like a mannequin. Honestly the more she tries to pose exactly right to cover any 'flaws', the more it looks like she has a zillion flaws to cover, when in reality she's a gorgeous woman. I wish she'd realize it and stop being afraid of imperfection." Amen.

Nattalie, Geezy (36,107) by Stacey from USA
See and Nattalie, TEOM is a perfect example of how talented MC is. That album is proof she is so talented, better than what she's done with Triumphant, IMO. I loved TEOM from first listen. I was estactic. TEOM reminded me of my favorite MC album: Daydream. My point wasn't to start a discussion of new vs old fans. We are all fans of MC. The past couple of weeks, I've been listening to MC's songs, putting togther mixes of her remixes and songs on mix CDs while I work out. This current effort falls flat for me because of what I know she is capable of producing. Even her more well known rap collabos of the past (Heartbreaker, ABMB, Crybaby, My All/Stay Awhile, etc) have that certain edge, magical quality to them that this song just lacks, IMO. It's not about me loving her older stuff vs more recent material. In each of her recent albums, I've found songs I absolutely love. In listening to her catalog as a whole of late, I know she is better than this. It's just more of the same for me, and it's not good.

Here comes Perez Hilton (36,106) by Lee from USA
I mean, this guy is an idiot. When things are going wrong for Mimi, he would not hesitate to trash her. When things are going right, either he makes snarky comments or does not care. Another thing that irks me is this notion that Mimi has to be #1 all of the time. There are tons of artists that are her age or older who struggled to break into the Top 40, and they don't catch hell over it. Hell, MDNA is struggling on the album charts, but he won't write about that.

Grumpy Goats (36,105) by RibbonB from USA
LMAO. Mariah is Hilarious. I just checked Twitter and she tweeted where my lambs at. I'm playing Grumpy Goats (some kind of actual game video game). That's just too funny.

Special K/Triumphant (36,104) by John from USA
I agree, "Triumphant" really isn't doing much at all, aside from upsetting many of her fans. Maybe, as others have said, she just put the single out because the song is important to her. Or, perhaps she's testing the waters before dropping/finishing the new album (which would be wise, I think)? I mean, let's face it, the main version of the song sucks, she's barely on it. And I have nothing against rap. I don't care what Randy Jackson (who I'm starting to hate for slowly killing Mariah's career) says "oh, when you're in the studio, you have to do what the song calls for, bla bla bla." Bullsh#%t. If you are Mariah freaking Carey, you are NOT to be featured on your own song lol. But anywho, I digress. I hope Mariah is wise and listens to her fans and makes smart choices on this upcoming album. You can only withstand so many flops (remember Janet?)... and even though we all know her albums are always filled with gems at the very least, the general public can be very fickle and unfairly harsh towards her.

Courtney (36,103) by RibbonB from USA
I agree with you and the single is generating lots of buzz in Asia and the UK and slowly in the US charts. It's nice to see the video at around 9 on iTunes charts, at least that's what I read and it's also building on rhythmic stations. I mentioned the great song Adorn by Miguel which has actually been out for months buzzing along, but it may never cross over or even hit number one on R&B charts, but I bet it's a Grammy winner next year. The charts and great or even good songs don't always align, but Mariah is doing some good things right now in anticipationn of her new CD.

The purpose of a buzz single is to create a buzz right? Well if the single has no "buzz", then it isn't serving it's purpose.

Wojtek (36,100) by Nattalie from USA
Your Mariah Carey collection is awesome. Just thought I'd let you know. Since I'm so young, I've never seen those single covers before, so it's nice to see what was back then. And the cassest tape you had of Music Box was crazy. I can't believe people used to fast forward and rewind a whole entire tape like that. I probably would have never listened to music back then if that was the case. I understand rewinding movies, but a music tape? Please.

Message board/Triumphant/music video (36,099) by Will from England
Firsf of all, love the new layout! Nice to see faces with names now (will get a picture up ASAP). Had some time to think about the song over the past couple of weeks and (someone mentioned it below I think) I think she released it, just because she wanted people to hear it, not to get a hit with it. Her history shows that all the songs that mean something to her (ie very close, personal lyrics) don't do well on the charts. They never have. Triumphant is a song that she more or less dedicated to Nick when he was ill and further dedicated the video to him (since he boxes). If you guys remember her GMA interview, she hinted that she was planning to release something special. Whether this song was what she was talking about I don't know, but I think she wanted to release it for some special reason. There is no logic in releasing a song, when the album is half a year away. Which makes me think that she isn't looking for a hit, she's looking to hep inspire someone who may be feeling down in the dumps. So ease off the song and see what it's really about.

Drama queens (36,098) by Courtney from USA
Some of you are making a big deal over nothing with Triumphant. It's only a buzz single. The album isn't out for another 6-7 months depending on when in March the album is scheduled for release and if it doesn't get pushed back again. Some of you are also forgetting that radio has a major disrespect for artists after they hit age 40, especially women. If Mariah wasn't a smart business woman, she wouldn't still be in the business now.

Stacey new fan/old fan (36,097) by Nattalie from USA
I wouldn't say that Stacey. I think it's all about your personal taste. Remember, I didn't care for Mariah when I first heard her. It was The Emancipation Of Mimi CD. Funny thing is, I actually used to love The Emancipation Of Mimi until I realized her true abilities. I used to listen to that album over and over again untill one day I decided to burn one of her old albums because I had low expectations for it. It was her Daydream album. After I heard the album straight through for the first time, I litterally cried. That was the day I became a fan. I threw the illegal copy away and bought her very first album and worked my way up. So no, I wouldn't say that. I love and understand rap though.

Triumphant video (36,096) by JfromUSA from USA
That part towards the end when Mariah starts throwing punches cracks me up. The video is alright. I didn't see anything wrong with it and I honestly don't feel like Meek is the star of the video. If Mariah would have been the boxer with diamond encrusted pink gloves and barely there short shorts (this is Mariah we're talking about) people would've ridiculed her. I think her role was good and she looked extremely hot. I swear this woman does not age. Blasting Triumphant as I type this. I still don't get why such a good song has fans so polarized.
