I wish she would check closer to me/us in Europe (103,659) by Zachariah from Croatia
I never experienced a Christmas show by her and I would really like to. I wish she would come closer. But nevertheless, I am happy that her Christmas music will be playing everywhere (stores, squares, shops). I love it. It really brings me a lot of joy.

Mariah isn't defrosting, she has never been frozen (103,658) by MusicfanJ from Germany
Yes, she always had a great sense of humour. I always loved her humour from the beginning. She's such a funny one. With the "defrosting" it's hilarious. Bravo Mariah.

I bought her best of album because of "Rockin' around the Christmas tree". I love this Christmas song. Brenda Lee is a real Rock & Roll lady. Brenda, Wham and Mariah are just perfect for Christmas and always will. Good music will never be outdated, classics will be loved forever.

She's checking her list - she's checking it twice? (103,656) by Andrew from the UK
Mariah ought to strongly consider shaking up her Christmas tour set-list by interspersing the Christmas songs with non-Christmas songs,

When she played "Yo New York in the house" at the London O2, 20,000 people went crazy only to fall to awkward silence when it cut short only for Mariah to joke "Nooo, that's a whole other show." Why does it have to be? You would be hard pressed to go to any pubs, restaurants, malls, etc., in December where they only played Christmas music. Too much Christmas irritates people.

I found that the Christmas set-list dragged a bit and would have been much better alternating between Christmas and non-Christmas songs. It would also have the effect of opening up her regular catalogue to a Christmas audience which is never a bad thing.

Reflections of my expectations have come to wither (103,655) by Jamie from UK
Mariah is a cultural and music icon, she's known around the world and continues to be known. She might not be as popular as she was in her hey day but neither have any of the other legacy music icons. There comes a time when they are no longer as popular but it doesn't mean they are no longer liked and respected for their work. Even Madonna who I loved in the early days is making a bit of a fool of herself these days but the legacy is still there. God forbid anything was to happy to her or even Mariah at some point people will remember them for the successes they had in their prime and those that have stayed loyal fans will remember everything. You can't undo history, Mariah was an absolutely huge artist for a long time and no one will forget that. And she's still present today not many can say that. I use to worry if she wasn't popular anymore but I've come to the realization that we can't control time and every artist has their mainstream time. I'm now just happy to have appreciated her music and continue to listen to it, both in anticipation and in reflection.

Totally off the mark Mariah has delivered this year alone with Music Box 30, news of a new album next year and the Rarities a couple years back. Mariah is defo in on the whole defrosting thing and why shouldn't she, a fantastic song that everyone loves and now a mini tour to go with it for the USA lambs. Just because she's huge at Christmas time does not make any of her other music and less important. Christmas time is one if not the biggest times of the year, she's always loved Christmas why should now be any different.

Christmas shows (103,653) by Bobby A from United States

"What other female artist has a Christmas classic that will be her biggest income booster for years to come?"

Brenda Lee with Rockin' Round the Christmas Tree. I don't know any other song of hers. Never have, never will. I'm sure she's made loads of albums and recorded hundreds of songs, but this is her legacy. It's an absolutely sensational song though, so well done to her.

It's called business. An ATM with a wig on would be if she were being taken advantage of without getting anything in return. It's just the way things are, no one stays at the top forever. Let's be grateful that when she was at the top, she was tour de force. Often imitated, never duplicated.

In other words: she has taken something used in a meme to mock her and, in one fell swoop, owns it. Cannot even believe the self-depricating humour she has shown is the source of criticism. It's like moaning about her having lost weight: give her credit where it's due.

Mariah isn't defrosting, and that Mariah her self sees the irony in this is the reason she can say that about herself. I regulary check how many monthly listeners the biggest artists from the 80's and 90's have on Spotify. I know Spotify is not the best streaming service to use to asess how popular an artist is, cause there are large differences between countries in how widespread the service is being used, mostly Scandinavian, European and Western countries use it. But at the moment Mariah has almost 25 million monthly listeners, 176th place in the world. For an artist who started in 1990, that is not a bad number.

Just a few months ago, Madonna had almost as many listeners, but she has seen a ressurgance in listeners the last few months, and now is up to almost 40 million monthly listeners. But Mariah is way ahead of Celine Dion, Kylie Minogue (even though she has a new album out), Cher, David Bowie, Prince, George Michael and many of the greats from the last decades. She is ahead of Whitney Houston as well. The current artists Mariah can't compeet with, but my point is, Mariah isn't defrosting before Christmas, that is just how she is talked about in our culture right now, how people on social media use humor, make memes, cause she is like this wave, a tsunami, you can't escape between 1st of November and 31st of December, everyone knows it, and everyone is inn with the joke.

Truth is, Mariah is one of the most listened to artists from the last four decades all through the year. So, people on this board, don't get fooled by the memes and the gimmicks surounding Mariah from now on and untill Christmas, she is not defrosting, cause she has never been frozen, non pun intended, Madonna

Firstly, I want to thank everyone for being respectful in their replies. I think the problem is me. I love and believe in MCs artistry so much I want her to be a cultural and music icon. Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder. The amount of respect and weight those names carry is what I wanted for MC. Anything that feels cheap, exploitive, desperate, or narrowing, grates my nerves. I want MC to be a cultural and musical icon. And listen, I'm hard on Madonna for the same reason, popping out her nipple, fillers and dating 28 year olds while 60 is destroying her legacy. I probably need a break from the board. I'm getting too invested again. Once again, for me the house is on fire and no one in the party smells smoke. I'll go enjoy the music in the way it always has brought me comfort, nostalgia and distant fellowship. Have I mentioned I'm bipolar?

The sad truth is that no recordlabel wants to work with her except at Christmas. Mariah becomes an ATM with a wig on it every Christmas. That's all she can do.

"They are for us, the diehard fans. I'll gladly take these gifts. I can't wait for #Daydream30." Oh yes, absolutely. I'm so thankful that she did a Christmas tour in Europe and I could see her in Germany again. It was the best, pure joy and fun. I love the Christmas time. I love Mariah, so I'm fine with it. That she is doing Christmas concerts this year is fantastic for the "US Lambs". I'm sure it will be wonderful.

Without the resurgence of AIWFCIY in 2018, so many young people would have never known this Christmas classic. What other female artist has a Christmas classic that will be her biggest income booster for years to come? If only we could get an official duet between MC and Michael Buble. I feel another huge Christmas announcement is coming soon in regarding AIWFCIY.

I honestly don't care if this is what MC has become. Sometimes we all have to be comfortable and confident in our accomplishments. MC can be proud of her career. These Christmas concerts, anniversary releases aren't for the general public. They are for us, the diehard fans. I'll gladly take these gifts. I can't wait for #Daydream30.

Randy, she shouldn't argue for her legacy, her legacy speaks for itself and it does it very well. Her legacy is there for us to enjoy and for others to discover. All of us got hooked with her music because of some performance on TV or some song on the radio and we went from there. Millions have the chance to do the same every year with "AIWFCIY". I discovered "Eva Cassidy" ten years after she was gone while watching Michelle Kwan ice skate to "Fields of Gold". If the legacy is good, it doesn't need promoting.

I wouldn't take it so seriously. She's in on the joke, and fully aware of the videos that have been going around for the past couple of months, like she was with the McDonald's ad of her standing in the ocean. We've already had this discussion of her slowing down and taking more time for herself and her family, and if she is lucky enough to only have to work 2 months of a year, make that money during a period of time that she loves to celebrate, then let her. Lord knows I would love to. Whether you like it or not, Mariah is now synonymous with Christmas, and not evey artist can do that (associate themselves specifically with a popular holiday period), I think the only other one could be MJ with Thriller but that's the one song. Brands would kill to own a verb (googling, tweeting etc.); Mariah Carey owns an entire holiday period.

How did you do? I love me some Randy - but you did badly, bro. Mariah has hardly offered up nothing of her back catalogue in the last three years. (The Rarities 3 years ago today, no?) You are way off the mark here. That Mariah can see actually irony means she has her eyes wide open.

She said it herself on her Facebook concert promo. "Yes, the actual defrosting has begun." If she's fine with being frozen from January 2 - October 31 each year, why am I arguing for her legacy. I'll join the lambs. Yaaassss Mariah. Hit number one again. AIWFCIY is the best thing you've ever done. It's your signature song. It's the only part of your catalogue that matters. My queens slays 9 weeks every year. AIWFCIY has won 28 Grammys, gotten you into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and won you a video vanguard. Your legacy just like your voice is completely intact. How did I do?
