Find that Rainbow's end (102,886)
by Bobby A from United States

|

Radio wouldn't play it now because it is too cheesy in 2023. MC needs to release something in the vain of Toosi's Favorite Son. The Favorite Son message is what she was conveying in the Rainbow Interlude in 1999. The gospel children's choir reminds me so much of something MC would record and release.

Release that song now. It’s about time Mariah brings back the glory of that 90’s dance house remix. Who would’ve thought that when Mariah said back in the day that one day she’s going to finish the song Rainbow interlude, the song would be a dance song.

Well I was there and what can I say? I quote my good friend Clarissa: Mariah was the best drag queen of the day. the movements, the attitudes and she sang like a drunk tourist in a karaoke bar. it was funny and sad at the same time.

That's a complete load of bull. Was she late 90s Mariah or even mid-2000s? No. But she didn't come off as drunk nor as a drag act. She was present, engaging, fun, and she sounded good singing.
I was honestly expecting something along the lines of the Lovers and Friends show in Vegas but was pleasantly surprised how different it was in tone and the health of her voice.
On the majority of the remixes, the backing track did the heavy lifting for sure. There was no hiding that. She did sing a lot of the slower songs, however. And the My All/Mi Todo moment was chef's kiss. As was the Rainbow interlude.
I could've done without the numerous backstage moments that interrupted the flow of the show, but she always does that.

That summation goes along with my sense of it just from watching most of the show on YouTube. I was not there in person. It did seem like she was a karaoke act at her own show at times and just plain out MIA at other times. If this is the new normal then yes it is extremely disappointing. I have seen her many, many times in concert and that was never her standard. I sense that someone put some time into arrangements and some choreography and background video/graphics. Though the inflatable unicorn balloon and chrysalis wings on the dancers were misses for me. "Its a Wrap" seemed her most cogent song of the set. I love the remixes used, but she didn't sing to them which undercuts her title as "Queen of the Remix" a bit. I just don't know what is really going on with her. At this point, a lot of "lost years" are starting to add up. I had hoped for maybe another album after the pandemic but vocally, of late, things make me question that. I do wonder if she had an unsuccessful procedure that is affecting her voice, like Julie Andrews. And if she ain't got the pipes no more then any kind of a "record deal" is out of the question. I guess we just wait and see. I don't know. It's becoming a long, confusing and difficult road as a lamb of over 33 years.

Apparently Mariah is dropping some surprises for Music Box's 30th anniversary (August 31st). Could it be we finally, finally get the Music Box Tour footage on DVD/Blu-ray quality and/or audio? The scrapped AYNAF video? More outtakes not included on The Rarities?
I hope it doesn't get botched like the Butterfly anniversary.

Terna I fully agree.
But let's forget about the voice for a moment. What impressed me the most and made me the happiest was seeing how comfortable she was on stage. Moving around, no awkward poses and stiff boring performances. This was the best I've seen her work a stage since Madison Square Garden in 1996. I know it's a bold statement but she seemed so at ease with whatever she was doing. And for me, after literal decades of bland and/or purely vocal performances she was a true performer again.

I beg to differ, fluidity is back, well not completely but it's much better than a year ago, her tone is warm again like there's substance there not that dry nasal sound, that annoying scratch anytime she was trying to belt is gone, resonance in her upper belts have reappeared. I hear a recovering voice and she's not trying to overdo it - she knows her voice is in repair mode. (Do you think Mariah doesn't know her voice?) This was one of the biggest complaints Whitney Houston's voice coach had that he spoke about during the aftermath of her demise. He said Whitney's voice was so resilient and repaired very quickly but at the slightest semblance of function she would relax, do shows and then it was back to square one. I get that sense Mariah has read all our posts and finally got round to seeking professional help. It's evident in her sound from the Pride concert. She sounds like '98 again minus a few bumps here and there.

Is that why the board has been so quiet about her performance? Have you noticed that her hand doesn't go up in air like her early 90's and 2000's performances? It stays very close to her waist now like to say that she is not feeling like she will be able to execute her notes successfully.

Rainbow Interlude live (102,874)

I think she was saying "we might never reach the rainbow's end, but we're trying", something like that, basically improvising on the lyrics of Rainbow.

Pride performance (102,870)
by Lady B from USA

I don't miss out on an opportunity to see Mariah live and happened to be in LA for her Pride performance. I'm here to tell you, the best part was the energy that both the crowd and she gave each other. It was truly a celebratory moment and she did so many versions of songs I had not heard before. Most of all, she and the crowd both seemed to be having the time of their lives. Didn't hurt that she looked amazing and her dancers certainly played up to the audience. Good vibes all around.

The measure of wealth (102,869)
by Andrew from the UK
| |
|
|
"Mariah Carey" is not measurable by currency. There are no figures that do her justice. Not even Billboard chart placings. She is not measurable. "Mariah Carey" is an idea.
It is not that every song was a smash (kinda was), it isn't that every song hit a stratospheric note (kinda did), it isn't that every photo captured beauty (falling in love with the Rainbow photography again).
Mariah Carey is the idea that at some point, dependent upon your vantage point, all 3 things collided. Everything collided. She wasn't an artist in a league with other artists. She was weirdly big.
"You ain't gon' believe dis." All the money in my pocket vs all the money in yours. Mariah Carey's name will be known throughout the ages whilst Beyoncé's fades to a dim, distant memory. I'd bet the farm. Be safe and be well, all.

Hopes for Mariah’s Pride performance (102,868)
by Bobby A from United States

The videos on the web are promising. She sounded better during the Pride performance than the Lovers and Friends performance. I love the Rainbow interlude dance remix with new lyrics. I am just wondering if the hold up for new music has nothing to do with vocal issues, but rather not having a record label.

Hopes for Mariah’s Pride performance (102,865)
by Brandon from USA

What are you guys hoping to see during Mariah's upcoming performance? I want to see a completely revamped set list with her performing a lot of her remixes. I don't want to see any long sequined gowns but more body suits, jump suits and short flirty dresses. I also want to see a confident, well rehearsed Mariah owning the stage. I do not want to see her in tight corsets or super tall heels that restricts her movement or singing. I don't want a bunch of lip syncing with an occasional "Aye" shout nor for her to look as though she's lost on stage and doesn't know where to go. I want her to properly warm up that golden voice and tear the house down like we know she can.

When I saw this article I had to go back and watch MC's performance with Latto. It was so sweet to see Latto give props and flowers to MC. The industry is really starting to piss me off between the Grammys and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. No MC can't win everything but give her her flowers. Before they died, I feel like Whitney, Luther, MJ and Prince were given proper tributes and accolades. Now that Celine is sick, does that mean they'll give her a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction and MC will be overlooked yet again? All we have left from our era is MC, Janet and Madonna. Give MC her flowers.

The Weekend collaboration (102,866)

I was going to post about the song yesterday, but got busy headed to the airport. It's called Popular and it is a hot summer song. It also features Playboi Cardi. I like the way Madonna swoops in for her verse like she has been singing R&B all of her life. The beat is something that The Weekend has never done before.

There was a moment in time where she was pushing that, even posting that IG story of her singing along at one of his concerts. I got the feeling that he wasn't interested, maybe thought it was beneath him to be collaborating with a "legacy" artist when he's in the prime of his career, and she felt dissed and stopped acknowledging him. Recently there was an awkward moment during one of her Twitter spaces and where she asked the fans who she should collaborate with, someone clearly said "The Weeknd" and she pretended she didn't hear and changed the subject lol. I don't see that ever happening, maybe in a few years when his career is on the decline.

It's sad we just have so few artists from the 90's still standing. Mariah definitely deserves her flowers. She not only paved the way for many, but her contribution to music has been significant. I think her diva persona has prevented some from taking her seriously though, but respect where respect is due. And yes, Latto treated Mariah with the respect and admiration that she so well deserves.
